Review: More than just a school concert, 1975's Rocking Grass was a sensation. On one fine estival day, The College Andre-Grasset auditorium overflowed, leaving hundreds spellbound. Registering its impact, Jean-Yves Quesnel and colleagues immortalised the show into a recording, transforming Rocking Grass into Phono Grass.Sessions at College Edouard-Montpetit's studio captured the energy of a shifting musical landscape in Quebec; and pianist Benoit Sarrazin, unknowingly recorded mid-performance, later became a professional musician. The album's original songs, 'Le Roi Muffe' and 'Bright Moments', embodied the era's creative freedom, with the latter later sampled by DJs and featured on Canadian Racer. Originally pressed on a 500-copy run, 1001 est Cremazie become a prized collectible; now it's much more readily available.

Review: February 2024 saw two levee-breaking live moments by The 1975: here the indie band would return to Manchester for two massive AO Arena dates on 17 and 18 February, riding the rips of their biggest world tour yet. While technically from Wilmslow, the band cut their teeth in Greater Manchester's storied live scene and have always claimed the city as their unofficial hometown. Despite turning the leaf on a string of controversies centred on frontman Matty Healy, that didn't stop them from operating Still At Their Very Best, promising the kind of raucous, genre-blending performance fans expect a decade into their career. Support comes from labelmates The Japanese House, and Healy would later duet with Amber Bain on cult single 'Sunshine Baby.' This LP recording of the live spate distils a thirty-track stack of pristine live redeliveries, and with a monomaniacal arena's roar throughout, we hear a larger-than-life return home for the band.

Review: 20/20 Soundsystem were a four piece live band fronted by 20/20 Vision boss Ralph Lawson, leaving their stamp on events Sonar Barcelona, Glastonbury, Space Ibiza, EXIT, Love International, Creamfields Argentina, fabric London and Manchester WHP. They released two studio albums, the latter, 2008's Falling, lending its title track to a clutch of new mixes here courtesy of Random Factor and Fernando. The new versions bring a modern touch and fresh dancefloor-ready energy while never forgoing the spirit of the original. Random Factor's offering is a gritty and dubby electro version and Fernando offers a cosmic chugger with plenty of sci-fi sounds and wispy acid details. Sound.

Review: Dr. Dre's The Chronic gave rise to such heavy-hitters as 'Nuthin' But A 'G' Thang' and 'Let Me Ride', but what about its many "reimaginings" over the years? With The Ghronic, released in 2023, West Coast rappers 38 Spesh and Conway The Machine can't be said to have laid down their own version more so than they did treat the Dre touchstone as a starting point, dropping a nine-track array of similar G-funk whistling lowrider bumps, readapted for the contemporary New Yorker, and yet with fresh lyrical themes and subject matters. Reissued two years later on green vinyl, after an initially white-sleeved run, the productions are ever clean and the flows lackadaisical. Features from Lloyd Banks, Che Noir, Benny The Butcher and Elcamino cement the bluffing rep of a brag-heavy machine duopoly.

Review: Originally formed in 1980 in Reno, Nevada, 7 Seconds are often credited as one of the most vital and criminally overlooked pioneering hardcore punk acts. Following on from their much-adored 1985 EP-cum-LP Walk Together, Rock Together, their 1986 follow up New Wind featured slower tempos and a notable imbuing of melody, with the project going on to be credited as an integral blueprint for the hardcore scene's eventual embracing and transition into pop-punk and indie rock. This long overdue reissue from Trust Records arrives complete with the complimentary Change In My Head, which is a totally new take on the classic album featuring tracks remixed in their entirety by Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) alongside Inner Ear Studios' Don Zientara. Restoring and reimagining unreleased cuts from the original LP such as 'Change In My Head' and 'Compro', these bonus tracks offer a fresh snapshot of 7 Seconds in transition, but still very much firmly rooted in their hardcore ethos (before literal U2 comparisons would arise with later output). This limited double LP also comes with a 24-page oral history featuring unseen photographs, flyers, and memorabilia.

Review: On the long-serving deep house label's latest reissue, Large Music takes us back to 1997 and one of the most beloved (and these days, hard to find) EPs by Washington, D.C duo 95 North (AKA Doug Smith and Richard Payton). As it did first time around, the EP contains four contrasting versions of 'Jazz Ascension'. The EP-opening 'Red Soul Mix' lives up to its name by wrapping breezy flutes, syynths, pianos and spoken word samples around a bumpin' bassline and classic-sounding US deep house beats, whilst the 'Red Dub' delivers a stripped-back and groove-focused take on the same musically expansive mix. Over on side two, the slightly darker and more bass-heavy 'Hard Dub' compares favourably to the then contemporaneous work of fellow Washington, D.C-duo Deep Dish. A handy, spoken word 'Washapella' rounds of an essential reissue.

Review: Bristol genre-blurrer A Sagittariun reemerges with 'The 23 Enigma', a three-track implied "conceptechno" EP, and his first new material since 2022's 'Strange Brew' on Rekids. Having already conquered Hypercolour, Running Back, Craigie Knowes and Secretsundaze, he's now spent close to fifteen years weaving strands of techno, ambient dub, breakbeat, and deeper electronics, lacing each with a heavy psychedelic dosage just shy of overdose. The latest hears 'Fountainhead' and 'Mind Games' offer a percussive jolt through rugged high-impact tools, set aside for dirtier floor works. The title track is the only one to trade the club's rough pulse for a subtler, high crown cognition, riding warped, muscular electronics till we reach an unbidden cavernous zone. A Sagittariun continues to operate outside the grid, where cosmic intent meets merciless studio power.

Review: A&A aka Anton Kubikov and Artem Rudakov, share a groovy, Detroit-influenced casualiser of an EP, bouncing between slipstreams of rubbery bass and slick, soulful chord voicings. Whatever said "blue transfer box" is, we're unsure whether it's wise to ask what exactly said box is transferring, or simply leave the mystery be. After all, it sounds great. And besides, we've also a 'Slow Disco Smoke Machine' to marvel at, one which wafts effortlessly between dreamboats of blue pad smoke and acidic stabs, facilitating the necessary headspace for 'Deep Thought'.

Review: Planet Orange Records' fifth release is a four-tracker from the legendary minds behind Alien Recordings, aka A2 and Stopouts, who take one side each. From the opening moments, the Beyonders EP weaves a thread between the halcyon days of tech and minimal from the 90s but with forward-thinking energy. A²'s 'Glider' is a happy, piano-laced celebration to start with ,then 'Let's Get It Together' cuts loose with lithe pads and more mid-tempo drums. Stopouts steep up for the flip and soon melts the mind with some tightly woven acid and cosmic tech on 'Sin City' and 'Kartwheel' then brings a more freewheeling and loopy groove with some neon colours dripping down its face.

'After The Disco' (Submariner edit) sinks back into smooth grooves with light sprinklings of percussion and nimble drums and last of all 'Take A Trip' (feat Keitajuma) closes out with ambient laced and late night sounds.

After the success of their last release together, 'Mirazh', Thomas Schumacher and A.D.H.S. reunite for a potent follow-up, both bottling and jarring the essence of Berlin techno. Simplicity abounds on 'Ex Machina' - perhaps alluding to the portentous Alex Garland film of the same name whose artificially intelligent omens will never leave us - as repetitious carnival drums blend madly with a semaphoric, high-octave melody. Review: London's seasoned producer ADMNTi with four tracks that distil years of immersion in tech-house, jungle and grime into sharp, percussive club tools with distinct UK flair. 'Second Hand Sushi' drives the point home with its snapping drums, snarling basslines and wiry synth stabsibig-room energy and definitely no excess fat. 'Lost Fruits' stays steppy, leaning into sub pressure and pirate radio textures, soundbites crackling like a tape pack rewind. Review: It would be fair to say that great Italo-disco albums are few and far between. Ago's 1982 debut album, "For You", is undoubtedly one of the rare examples of an Italo-disco artist getting it right across an entire LP. As this timely reissue proves, the artist (and his production team) was more heavily influenced by U.S disco, boogie and early electrofunk than many of his synth-pop and new wave-loving peers, giving the set an authenticity and warm instrumental feel often lacking in similar Italian exercises. You may find the accented vocals a touch tongue-in-cheek, but the choruses are great, the instrumentation brilliant and the production spot on.

AJH Synth put a lot of thought into the ergonomics and how to select the individual filter type. Filter type can be changed either with the front panel Mode knob, or by using a control voltage patched to the MODE CV input. The selected filter mode is displayed by the LED next to the filter in use. This is also very helpful when using a step sequencer to change filter mode as it gives a real time display of the filter chosen as you take the step CV voltage up or down, while setting up each individual step.
Lastly, AJH Synth have also included a VCA hard-wired to the output - simply patch an envelope or an LFO to the VCA input, connect a VCO to the audio input and you have a synth voice (with a choice from 32 different filters!) using only three modules!
Thirty two Eurorack VCF's and a VCA would most certainly take up a lot of rack space - AJH Synth have got all of this into 14hp and managed to have a really finger-friendly user interface, without it feeling cramped.

This magical switch completely transforms the resonance of the filter core by overdriving it in a similar fashion to the filter from the Soviet Polivoks synthesiser, which was renowned for it's powerful, aggressive character.
In common with the Oberheim Matrix 12 VCF, some of the sixteen filter types will not normally go into self-oscillation, however when you switch on P-Vox mode all sixteen filter types can be forced into self-oscillation at higher resonance settings. But that isn't the only change, the self-oscillation waveform is not the usual sine waveform, it is a rather more interesting and harmonically rich waveform that varies according to the filter type chosen - generally Low Pass modes produce the nearest to regular sine waves, whereas other filter types can produce very much more complex waveforms as can be seen in the diagrams below. It does not require any audio input for this, it can be a stand alone oscillator. Most of the filter types will track 1V/Oct reasonably well over a three to five octave range, so it can be used as a VCO with a few interesting waveshapes!
Of course, P-Vox mode isn't just useful for self-oscillation, it adds lots of character to any audio signal as P-Vox resonance is switched in.

Review: Originally formed in 1983 in Los Angeles, Alcatrazz are one of the pioneering metallic-tinged hard rock acts of the decade of change and cheese. Often noted for once being the musical home of an at-the-time unknown Yngwie Malmsteen who served as lead guitarist for a year, before being replaced by Steve Vai, in the later years, the band have become somewhat comically known for their splitting off into separate factions of the same group, both performing under identical monikers since the release of 2020's Born Innocent with lead vocalist Graham Bonnet embarking on his own version of the band complete with Nevermore mastermind Jeff Loomis, while guitarist Joe Stump, Jimmy Waldo on keys, Gary Shea on bass, and Mark Benquechea on drums have remained united. Released as part of Record Store Day 2025, All Night Long In Japan 2019 originally arrived a year prior to all of this internal conflict, showcasing a series of shows unlike the band had ever done before, featuring two sold out nights at TSUTAYA O-EAST in Tokyo on 28th & 31st May 2019, with night one including their classic debut album No Parole From Rock 'N' Roll performed in its entirety in the intended track sequence the band originally wanted to be released back in 1983, while night two would include Graham Bonnet's Rainbow era 1979 album Down To Earth performed in full by Alcatrazz.

Opener 'Language' sets the tone with sharp stabs and a moody tension that gets the space-trip underway. Review: Lempuyang is a label you will know and respect for its high quality stream of immersive dub techno and now the man behind it, Alastair Kelly, debuts a new label with none other than revered UK techno mainstay Ibrahim Alfa Jnr. He opens up with 'Component A' which is a moody melange of slow, broken dub beats and fizzing synths. There is further experimentation on 'Untitled B2 1' which pairs a churning dub rhythm with naive and innocent melodies and lots of li-fi static. Review: Superfriends is a new label project from German tech house duo Andhim. They take care of the first release and export outside the usual realms on opener 'Tosch (feat Piper Davis).' It has an air of DJ Koze's hazy nostalgia to it with gentle tumbling drums, broad bass notes and plenty of lo-fi texture. 'German Winter' is not as harsh and cold as the season it is named after, instead layering up subtly hopeful, sustained chords over a groove that's not too heavy, not too airy. 'Mond' brings smeared and smudged melodies, flutes and pianos together over a dubby, delightfully deep house low end. 'Horse Society' closes with the distant sound or bird tweets, a hooky percussive lead and plodding kicks for day-time open-air dancing.

Review: Cititrax proudly presents the debut LP from Another Body Found here, which is the latest moniker of A// who is well known for his pioneering work as Le Syndicat Electronique. Emerging from the French underground with a dark electro, industrial, minimal synth and wave style, he has a stark and visceral take on raw energy and haunting atmospheres. There are plenty of mechanical, hypnotic beats here with heft bass and hints of dystopian fears. The title track reimagines Bronski Beat's 'Smalltown Boy' and strips it to its emotional core, 'Lost In The Northern Lights' has a cold, urgent sound and 'Murderous Earth' is brilliantly unsettling and melancholic.

Here the pair steer the brazy train through heady style-blends over four shapeshifter tracks; 'So Wrong' sallies forth with snarling synths and rigid drum patterns before a ghostly vocal twist pulls the whole thing into a haunting Italo dreamscape. The mood lifts with 'LuvLuvLuv', where slo-mo soul meets glistering psychedelia - equal parts groove and wooze, the track's as suited to sunrises as slow dances. Flip over to 'E-Killa' for an inflammable powder trail of Afro-disco and fizzing tropicalia, built to move a room from the waist down. Fade cut 'Lou Cee', finally, is a heartfelt Balearic blear; a finale that's as sentimental as it is stylish.

Review: Smiling Phases returns with its second outing and hands it over to Parisian producer Arve, who clearly has a deep understanding of many different genres as the two tunes he serves up go way beyond the predictable. Opener 'Pyroclast' is a fast and physical one that blends radiant house grooves with deep, disruptive rhythms and myriad cosmic synth lines that swirl around the mix. 'Tephra' is another busy workout with pumping drums and an array of different synth textures spraying around the groove. On the B-side, 'Pyroclast' gets a remix by Belgian producer DC Salas, who takes it into retro-future 90s trance-techno territory and Italy's Paolo Mosca, who injects warmth and depth as well as a little cosmic mystery.

He is a master of musical tension and abstraction and shows that with four tracks that build up the pressure and never let it go. 'Calm Under Pressure' is soothing up top with its smeared, spectral pads, but there's pent-up tension in the low end that keeps you on edge. 'Dark Arches' soundtracks an underground cavern with haunting pads and icy, watery droplets and 'Maelstrom' gets more direct with jostling broken beats, hissing trails and unsettling deep space mystery. 'Torsion' is the most maximal of the lot - an in-your-face collage of loopy, snappy drums and sordid synth sludge.

Review: Part of the wider Megami Tensei video game franchise, Persona 4 is a 2008 role playing title that hit Japan, and made a huge impact, in 2008. Set in a fictional version of the Land of the Rising Sun's countryside, players adopt the character of a high school student who moves to the small town of Inaba from the city to experience rural living for 12 months. Mysterious murders ensue, and it's up to you - or whoever's got the PS2 controller - to work out what's happening. It's typically deep dive stuff for a country that has always had a very unique relationship with video games. Atlus, the developer, already had a reputation for making beloved scores for its titles, and this one is no exception, although broke the mould compared with preceding instalments in the saga. Way more upbeat, it's a mixture of bubblegum dance pop, chip music, high intensity synth rock, urban-hued J-pop, and 'toon jazz.

Review: After a five-year split, Atomic Rooster returned with renewed force on their sixth studio album, Atomic Rooster, pushing into heavier territory sligning au naturel with the emerging new wave of British heavy metal. Released in 1980, the album marked a sharp turn from their earlier, more progressive leanings, favouring a nude, aggressor rock sound. Guitarist and vocalist John Du Cann reworked two tracks, 'She's My Woman' and 'Where's the Show?', from his unreleased 1977 solo work The World's Not Big Enough, breathing into them second life within the Rooster framework. Though the 2005 CD reissue stirred interest with rare demos and extensive sleevenotes, it remains an "unofficial" release due to copyright issues with EMI. 'Do You Know Who's Looking for You?' later found new life via a Finnish-language cover by rock band YUP.

Review: This new 12" from Glaswegian producer Harvey McKay sees him reworking Daniel Avery's 'Drone Logic' into a driving, big-room missile i and it absolutely slaps. Upping the tempo and leaning into a more percussive framework, McKay doesn't just touch up the original's swirling psychedelia, he rebuilds it for peak-time pressure. The acid line is still there, twisted and stretched, but now it rides atop galloping drums, shimmering hi-hats and the kind of pneumatic swing that's become McKay's signature. It's a brand new release on Phantasy, pressed in a limited run of 500 and already a fixture in the sets of Avery, McKay and Erol Alkan. The sound is somewhere between soulful techno and heads-down warehouse hypnosis i powerful without being punishing. What's clever is how it stays true to the hazy mood of the source, but flips it into something entirely more immediate. As a one-sided 12" it's a bold statement, but one that's easy to understand: it only needs one track when it hits this hard. Built for high ceilings, smoke machines and stretched-out moments mid-set, this is an edit that earns its hype. A slow-burn classic reborn as a proper dancefloor weapon.

Review: Mansfield new wave band B Movie unearth their long-lost 1982 album Hidden Treasures, more than forty years after they first recorded it for Phonogram, an imprint of Universal. The band were on the same management and signed to the same label as Soft Cell, but their career turned out to be a damp squib by comparison and they split up in the mid-eighties, without ever releasing this great album of synth pop for goths. Review: The latest release by Newdubhall is yet another emission of furrowed J-dub: in light of a recent five-year hiatus despite an esteemable career so far, Babe Roots has once again been hailed an icon of modern dub production here. Review: Scruniversal's sub label Tunes Delivery invites Moscow scene veteran Leonid Lipelis to don his Beard In Dust moniker for their third instalment, one which dips into various different eras of dance history for inspiration. There's a distinctly late 80s feel to opening tune 'Music of the U', complete with sampled bell stabs and the kind of beats that wouldn't be out of place on an S'Express or early Coldcut house affair. 'The Armenian Break' and 'City of Love' look back even further, back to the female-fronted disco efforts of the 70s, the latter adding a touch of Balearic flourishes. 'Abstractish P' circles around some serene arpeggios, with rave whistles and, as it progresses, twisting guitar notes, lending it an individual air, while closer 'RoRyaRe' nods to ExCel-era 808 State with some nice bleepery before settling into more progressive headnodding territory and some distinctive synth play.

The producer makes a knowing nod to dubstep's golden era on this debut with the first version of 'Magic.' It is built on steppy rhythms with seriously wobbling basslines that are all-consuming. Glitchy effects and shimmering synths finish it in style and leave you dreaming of dubstep dances gone by. The B-side is a Techno Mix that reimagines the original with a driving four-on-the-floor rhythm and plenty of richly atmospheric pads.

Review: This is The National's Matt Berninger's second solo album and treads a sonically similar path to the Cincinnati band, with some forlorn lyrics and gloomy delivery. Berninger is clearly a fan of plumbing the depths of his heart and fortunately has the talent to be considered one of the top merchants of emotion around these days. Of the tracks here, 'Breaking Into Acting' is a beautiful slice of stately Americana and his vocals interlock beautifully with Meg Duffy, aka Hand Habits. For something more energetic try 'Bonnet Of Pins' as it's a pulsating chamber pop cut with thumping rhythms and a tear-jerking yet rabble rousing atmosphere. Live, this one will ultimately go down a treat.

Review: With a title inspired by the utterances of The Oracle of Delphi, a cult of female priestesses who reportedly "changed the course of civilisation" by inhaling volcanic vapours, it's clear that Lee Burtucci and Olivia Block's first collaborative album is rooted in paganistic visions and experimental mysticism. It's comprised of two lengthy tracks, each accompanied by edited 'excerpts', and combines Burtucci's experimental synth sounds and tape loops with Block's processed vocalisations and hazy field recordings. Dark and suspenseful, with each extended composition delivering a mixture of mind-mangling electronics, creepy ambience and musical elements doused in trippy effects, it sits somewhere between the charred "illbient" of DJ Spooky and the deep space soundscapes of the late Pete Namlook.

Review: The New Jersey-born pianist returns to the studio here for the first time since the sudden loss of bassist Scott LaFaro, whose death in 1961 marked a devastating rupture for one of jazz's most intuitive trios. Now joined by Chuck Israels on bass, Evans leads with a newfound clarityiless conversational, more contemplative. Recorded in 1962, this was the group's first step into a quieter but no less daring phase. 'Re: Person I Knew' (an anagram of producer Orrin Keepnews) sets the tone: ghostly, elliptical, and harmonically dense. 'I Fall in Love Too Easily' and 'Polka Dots and Moonbeams' drift by in breathy half-light, while 'Very Early', a waltz penned by Evans, closes the set with delicate finality. In the absence of LaFaro's dancing counterlines, Evans doesn't fill the space, but lets it speak. The result is a study in restraint: American post-bop pared down to its emotional core. Not a debut, nor a reinvention, this is a quiet reckoning and a beautifully unresolved response to loss.

Drawing on over a decade of production, he moves beyond club tools to something more personal and musical, with guest appearances from Harvey Sutherland, Byron the Aquarius and Marlena Dae. Rooted in funk, soul and 90s grooves, these are rich, warm tracks with fully authentic swing i with much of the percussion played live by the artist himself. Marlena Dae adds her touch to several standouts, including the disco-leaning 'Electrical' and hazy deep house of 'Pleasure Ride'. Review: Scrapper Blackwell's final recordings, laid down in Indianapolis in 1961, marked the return of a blues guitarist and singer who had been silent since the mid-30s. Mr. Scrapper's Blues was released posthumously in 1962, just after Blackwell was shot and killed - a stark coda to a career shaped by both brilliance and misfortune. First out on Prestige's Bluesville sublabel, this stark, unclipped LP finds Blackwell alone at the mic, handling guitar, piano and vocals himself. The South Carolina-born, Indiana-raised musician earned early fame through his trailblazing partnership with Leroy Carr in the late 1920s and 30s, before vanishing from music entirely following Carr's death. This 180-gram reissue from Craft revives that late-career spark via an all-analogue mastering by Matthew Lutthan.

Review: A neat selection jungle and drum & bass gems by Fuze, also known as Dave Ivy i one half of Blinded By Science alongside Rob Pearson. It's the first time these DAT-sourced tracks have seen the light of day since their early 90s conception, and the result is a razor-sharp, brilliantly preserved insight into the raw energy of the era. Based in the US but with deep ties to the UK scene, 8205 specialises in archival material, and this one lands fully intact: 'The Alpha Omega' and 'Like The Thunder' are tough, rolling and atmospherically heavy, all punchy breaks and moody subs. 'Substrata Phase' feels slower-burning and eerie, while the Dev/Null remix flips it into something far more breakneck and manic. '6am' and 'So Damn Fresh' capture the looser, rave-adjacent side of early jungle, full of snap and character, and Tim Reaper's closing remix of 'The Alpha Omega' is the final blow i tight edits, deep pads, and that unmistakable future-facing precision. Review: The original album artwork, designed by Tony Hung, features an ice cream in neon lights against a black background. For this special edition, Hung has reimagined the design, adding gold foil and embossed details. It's a beautiful reworking that goes well with the gold disc and shows a deeper connection to the music. The audio has been spruced up using a technique that is the holy grail of vinyl cutting. And in terms of the music, you might consider the tracks more deep cuts as they don't tend to decorate their live sets. But that ought to change as there's moments of pure genius. To name a couple: 'Lonesome Street' could have made any of Bowie's albums. And 'There Are Too Many of Us' sees Albarn dabble in Roger Waters-esque observations beautifully. Time has been very kind to The Magic Whip as it's aging really well.

Review: Last year, regular collaborators Ian Boddy (a Sunderland-based electronics wizard who founded the ambient-focused DiN imprint years ago) and Erik Wallo (a long-serving Norwegian guitarist primiarly known for his experimental and ambient releases) performed their first joint concert for a decade. It's that performance, where they jammed out extended and much-changed versions of tracks featured on some of their prior studio sets, which forms the basis of their latest full-length, Transmissions. As you'd expect, it's a wonderfully atmospheric and evocative affair that gets the most out of both artists, with highlights including the wonderfully creepy 'Uncharted', the krautrock-style hypnotism of 'Aboena', the icy and ethereal 'Ice Station' and the slow-burn bliss of 'Salvage'.

Repurposing the unmistakable hookline from Donna Allen's g-funk jacker 'Serious' from 1986 into a fully re-recorded sample all their own, 'Make Me' set alight the feet of the breaksy raver, striking serious gold in the classic formula of easily-recognised old-school-soul vocals and sculpted tearout heft. As anthemic as its original B-side, 'No Good', the original latter half of the record now comes substituted by Big Ang's Rave To The Grave mix, whose blooping trooper sound design and mains-hum Reeses provide an ecstatic alter. Review: Originally released on cassette in 1984, Borghesia's Clones album now resurfaces on vinyl courtesy of the dons at Dark Entries. It's a fine glimpse into early electronic experimentation from 1980s Ljubljana, all created using borrowed gear and recorded live without overdubs. The results are an album of hypnotic proto-techno and acid-inflected instrumentals intended for video installations and performances, all of which speak to the raw, pioneering spirit of the scene in Yugoslavia at the time. The A-side has driving club energy, while the flip drifts into more immersive ambient territory. It might be four decades old, but this album still has a visceral impact on mind and body.

Review: Recorded at the BBC Paris cinema in Regent Street in 1970, which was the beginning of Bowie's defining decade. The performance tapes were lost by the BBC so if it wasn't for someone with the legendary foresight to make a cassette tape recording we wouldn't have this collection. Whilst Bowie is known for big, complex arrangements, the set here offers something stripped back and much more 60s sounding. You could imagine Bowie humming 'Amsterdam' around a campfire in Glastonbury, 'The Prettiest Star' shows the immense sustain of Bowie's voice and 'London By Ta-Ta' shows a more playful psychedelic side. Having taken this showcase opportunity with John Peel in his stride so well, it's his energy to play every show as if it was his last that is admirable and a key reason he managed to climb the ladder from here.

The first book detailing the history of influential indie label El records
Notes: Existing for a few short years (1984 - 1988), El records was perhaps the most 'cult' of the UK so-called 'indie' labels. El records was created in 1984 by Mike Alway. Alway was A&R man for Cherry Red, signing artists such as Everything But the Girl, The Monochrome Set and Felt. Alway left Cherry Red to help run Blanco Y Negro (an offshoot of WEA) but soon felt constrained by the conservativism of the commercial music sector and left to set up his own label. El was once described as 'the most innately English record label there has ever been' and yet had a global appeal. Alway must be the only record label boss to have had four songs written about him.
Alway's mercurial approach was to take complete control of the repertoire, the philosophy of the label's releases and even the titles of songs in the manner of pop impresarios of the past. Alway became a curator, selecting, shaping and overseeing the records issued on El. He employed songwriters proficient in classical pop techniques such as Nicholas Currie (AKA Momus) and Philippe Auclair (AKA Louis Philippe) who in addition to issuing their own records wrote, arranged and performed for other el artistes and used creative talentssuch as photographer Nick Wesolowski and designer Jim Phelan to create the El "look".
El had a unique flavour eschewing the traditions of rock and indie music of the mid 1980s, exhibiting instead a taste for 1960s bubblegum and chamber pop, the European chanson tradition, Latin rhythms and film scores (one of El's key players was child prodigy Simon Turner who wrote music for the films of Derek Jarman).
The ethos of the label was decidedly un-macho and many of El's key artists were female. El's first single "I, Bloodbrother Be" by Shock Headed Peters was an uncompromising gay anthem. Alway saw El as a celebration of elegance and beauty, in his own words, "a pop world beyond leather jackets and jeans". While record sales were disappointing, this unique blend was critically acclaimed in the UK and popular in America and mainland Europe while in Japan El had a profound effect, directly influencing the Shibuya-kei phenomenon that included Pizzicato Five, Cornelius and Kahimi Karie.
Bright Young Things is the first book to tell the fascinating story of El, one of the most influential indie labels of all time.

Alway became a curator, selecting, shaping and overseeing the records issued on El. He employed songwriters proficient in classical pop techniques such as Nicholas Currie (AKA Momus) and Philippe Auclair (AKA Louis Philippe) who in addition to issuing their own records wrote, arranged and performed for other el artistes and used creative talentssuch as photographer Nick Wesolowski and designer Jim Phelan to create the El "look".
El had a unique flavour eschewing the traditions of rock and indie music of the mid 1980s, exhibiting instead a taste for 1960s bubblegum and chamber pop, the European chanson tradition, Latin rhythms and film scores (one of El's key players was child prodigy Simon Turner who wrote music for the films of Derek Jarman).
The ethos of the label was decidedly un-macho and many of El's key artists were female. El's first single "I, Bloodbrother Be" by Shock Headed Peters was an uncompromising gay anthem. Alway saw El as a celebration of elegance and beauty, in his own words, "a pop world beyond leather jackets and jeans". While record sales were disappointing, this unique blend was critically acclaimed in the UK and popular in America and mainland Europe while in Japan El had a profound effect, directly influencing the Shibuya-kei phenomenon that included Pizzicato Five, Cornelius and Kahimi Karie.

Review: In the mid-70s, reggae great Dennis Brown was on a creative high with producer Niney propelling him to stardom. However, around this time, he was transitioning back to working with Joe Gibbs, another masterful studio hand who would later cement Brown's superstar status. Gibbs had previously worked with him on the acclaimed Visions album, and this particular track was likely recorded during that era or slightly earlier. Despite its quality, the tune didn't reach the audience it deserved, largely due to Gibbs' lack of UK distribution at the time. For much of the seventies, Joe Gibbs remained sidelined in England, limiting the global impact of his exceptional productions, but reissues like this do a fine job of underlining his importance.

Review: In Sommerhausen is a historical live recording from the Bavarian State Conservatory of Music in Wuerzburg, Germany, made on May 17 back in 1969. It has the talented Gunter Hampel on vibraphone, bass clarinet and percussion and is a session that also highlights the work of alto saxophonist Marion Brown, an unsung hero of the jazz avant-garde. Brown's lyrical, improvisational style is evident all across these tunes, and he is backed expertly by Hampel's rich instrumentation. Both of the deeply expressive musicians speak from the soul here while tracks like 'Malipieros Midnight Theatre' are laden with found sounds and percussion that may remind of the great Don Cherry.

'Belly (Two Mississippi)' has hurried drum loops that flap and underlap beneath tortured pads, shrieking elephant trumpets and ghoulish vocals that really are unsettling. Review: After a wild shelf-clearer came by way of a reissue of 'Ordinary Joe' earlier this year, we've now a second Outta Sight reissue of yet another gladly intoned Terry Callier deep cut on our hands. Born and raised in Chicago's Cabrini-Green, Callier came up alongside a generation of soul and jazz innovators but always stood apart. After his debut LP The New Folk Sound fell into obscurity, and his 1968 Cadet single 'Look At Me Now' slipped past unnoticed, he was brought into his mentor Jerry Butler's Songwriters Workshop, a game-changing move. This stirring early statement works in much inner commentary on manhood, stage fright and vital moment seizure - "now my people think I just fake it / I know I do things they don't understand / so I've got to show them I can take it / I've got to show 'em I can be a man" - aches with the strain of double consciousness in a performance society.

Wilt's 'Beoyon' has lovely gloppy drums and bass looping under harmonic chords - it's simple but effective. Hermit gets more full-bodied with his textured 'Who Dunnit' and DOTT strips it back to bumping drum track workouts on 'Twitching Softly.' Review: Brazilian talent Rafael Cancian has grown in stature thanks to solid outings on the tasteful likes of Razor-N-Tape and Hot Pot Records. Now with that profile established, he heads out with a new label of his own in the form of About Disco. He inaugurates it with a quartet of edits that he has already been deploying to great effect on various dancefloors around the world. 'Sounds Chicago' does indeed with raw drums and great keys dancing over the beats. Review: Longtime Matador records signee and frontman with Leesburg, Virginia's Car Seat Headrest outfit, Will Toldedo is fortunate to have spent the bulk of his adult life releasing records and is a true artist and craftsman. The lead single 'The Catastrophe' is a massive sounding indie number that nods to the adrenaline of noughties indie and the intensity of prog and punk. 'CCF (I'm Gonna Stay With You)' shows a more experimental side with the bonkers first part giving way to heartland rock that Bruce Springsteen would be proud to call his own. This is - remarkably - the 13th studio album by this band, which make it close to an album a year since their formation. The wind is truly in their sails here and the chances of their prolific output slowing anytime soon are thankfully very slim.

Review: Car Seat Headrest's approach to releasing records evokes a bygone era in the late 60s and 70s when it was really common to bash out an album every few months. Despite having only formed in 2010, the Virginia, US indie sorts now have 13 studio albums to their name. The band's singer and songwriter Will Toledo is prolific in releasing solo recordings on top of that, so hats off to them, really. It's not filler either. With the opening number 'CCF (I'm Gonna Stay With You)', they have one of the most anthemic rock tracks of the year so far (it takes a while to warm up but the pay off is huge) it's the sound of a group more confident in their ability than ever. Elsewhere, 'Reality' sees them shift gears into more of a ballad, but with so many twists and turns. That you don't quite know what's coming next is a welcome respite from formulaic rock and pop. Not everyone can pull it off but Toldeo and co. have earned the right to tear up the rulebook because they are operating on another level.

Review: Mariah Carey's tenth studio album stages a triumphant reclamation, not just of her voice but her autonomyicreatively, emotionally, and professionally. Rooted in Atlanta's crunk renaissance and steeped in New York r&b melodrama, it cuts through the excess of early-2000s pop with a steely sense of control. Freed from industry baggage and tabloid distortion, Carey reasserts herself with quiet mastery, sounding not just back but unbothered, undefeated and utterly in control.

Now reissued, it finally gets a second life and the wider attention it deserves. The producer, a longtime figure in the scene with more than twenty releases under different monikers, brings a depth and precision that only comes with years behind the boards. 'Fathom' opens with a fast broken beat that feels equal parts urgent and submerged. The textures are mechanical and murky, like a deep techno transmission beamed up from under the floor. Review: Sarah Mary Chadwick's ninth album drifts in on the smoke and hush of a late-night confessional. Half jukebox heartbreak, half art-song seance, we find a multi-talented but downcast musician tiptoeing the edge of a major life shift, as Chadwick sings of the moments before a commitment to sobriety. Hers is the kind of detoxified clarity that only hindsight allows; tremulous voices sing with candid exposure on 'I'm Not Clinging To Life' through subjects of age and lost time, backlaid by piano pitched so high we can feel vicariously the artist's vertigo. The New Zealand-born Melbourner recorded the album with Chris Townend, who reamped the full mix through a piano held open by a sandbag to create its strange, aspirant reverb effect heard throughout. The result is a record attenuated by granular bulks of memory and detachment; devastation, reframed with restraint.

Review: Remarkable future deep house from an artist whose reputation speaks for itself, nonetheless through the wing-flapped wings and freedom trills of the past. As he came of age in New Jersey in the mid 1980s, Kerri Chandler's groove-driven productions and rapt DJ sets could easily be said to have "evangelised" the dancefloor, with the deep and soul-bearing tilt of his sound seeming to promise salvation. Undoing and atonement come to those who shrive not in speech, but by moving their feet. 'Caged Bird' first came in 2020 - well past Chandler's 90s purple patch - but nonetheless contained as ever the slickly sophisticated jazz and vocal reflections likely inherited from Chandler's father, the late great jazzer DJ Joseph Chandler. Nae sings on the track, and her lyrics name-check Maya Angelou, who adapted the infamous poem 'Sympathy' by Paul Laurence Dunbar under the name 'Caged Bird'.

Review: Fraternal duo Chaos In The CBD open the latest chapter on a roundly impressive musical career, calling on an ensemble cast of creative collaborators to contribute to their debut long-player, 'A Deeper Life'. Louis and Ben 'Beans' Helliker-Hales have been on a non-stop roll since they began releasing music under the Chaos In The CBD moniker just over a decade ago. Recently adding a Fabric Presents compilation to their hefty singles catalogue, the siblings step up with arguably their most outstanding work to date. The likes of Blaze's Josh Milan, saxophonist Nathan Haines, longtime collaborator Isaac Aesili, and UK grime MC Novelist are just some of those drafted to embellish productions that range from head-nodding Balearic to the duo's more familiar dusty house thrust. Vast in scope, the collection drifts through all manner of sounds and styles, held together by a coherent production aesthetic and a gorgeously limber live musicality on display throughout. Highlights include the street soul swagger of 'Tears' (featuring Beantown disco queen, Saucy Lady), the searing soul of 'Wanna Tell Somebody', and the bittersweet deep house magnetism of 'Otaki'. All told, this is nothing short of brilliant work, arguably representing a coming of age as Chaos In The CBD simultaneously pay homage to their eclectic roots and transcend the floor-focused nature of the bulk of their previous output. Highly recommended.

Review: It's no wonder there's a nu-gaze movement bubbling up at the moment and showing no sign of dying down - the quality of the godfathers of the genre is just staggering. And you can count Chapterhouse as a key component of the transcendental and viscerally thrilling first wave of shoegaze. This collection features four songs that the Reading-based band recorded in January 1989 - including one that has never been released before. The track in question, 'See That Girl', is as good as any of the more direct songs that bands in their scene released in the 90s. It's their equivalent of Ride's 'Vapour Trail' and strong enough in and of itself to warrant getting the whole EP.

Review: Tanika Charles has long paired throwback soul with incisive songwriting, but this latest release feels especially raw. Now four albums deep, the Toronto-based artist pivots inwarditrading the usual tales of romance and heartbreak for something more fragile: the fallout of early family trauma. 'Don't Like You Anymore' and 'No More' snap with funk-driven defiance, but it's the quieter moments that linger. 'The Lament' and 'Talk To Me Nice' lean into vulnerability, while 'Win', a duet with Quebec's Clerel, glows with understated uplift. Charles leads a tight teamiScott McCannell, Kyla Charter, and Chino de Villa shape the grooves; Monophonics' Kelly Finnigan adds the rougher edgeibut the clarity here is hers. Her voice, resolute yet tender, is unafraid to ask difficult questions and even braver in leaving them unanswered. There's growth in every chord, as the arrangements span lilting r&b, classic soul, and easy-stepping slow jams. Review: It sometimes only takes one great song to gatecrash your way to prominence and Australian modern punk greats The Chats managed that with the opening cut here, 'Smoko', which is an ode to the joys of the fag break: "Leave me alone / I'm on Smoko". This reissue is of their second EP that was released by Sunshine Coast label Bargain Bin records. With the first pressing going for big money, it's a welcome chance to get your hands on this classic. Despite 'Smoko' being the biggest song, it's loaded with bangers and a stroke of genius that they realised that a song about struggling to afford bus money would connect on such a wide level.

Review: The Swiss producer and mastering engineer, now rooted in Lisbon, Chlar returns with an evocative slab of techno that feels both ancient and forward facing. With over a dozen EPs under their belt, this latest four-tracker solidifies his mastery of atmospheric, rhythm-heavy sound design. Side-A opens with 'Altitude', a primal and hedonistic tribal techno cut that recalls the spirit of Blueprint Records or early James Ruskin. It's a raw, driving rhythm that feels carved out of stone, a cavernous groove echoing through the walls of a rhythm cave. 'Serac' follows with a deep bassline and a futuristic, yet organic pulse that balances modern machine funk with a ceremonial, ritualistic undertone. There's a timeless quality to the way it moves. Side-B begins with 'Lamin', perhaps the EP's most cinematic piece. It's clean and spacious, yet cloaked in tension, like an alien landscape where mystery simmers beneath the surface. The vinyl itself is a visual treat, featuring a striking blue, white, dark green, sky blue, and black marbled design. This soundtrack is housed in a beautifully crafted gatefold sleeve with artwork by Daniele Giardini. Christodoulou's compositions delve into new, unexplored territories with a blend of intense and emotive pieces. The use of a seven-string guitar adds a new layer of depth to the music, delivering some of the most elaborate and heavy tracks ever written for the series. Review: Cinthie returns to Heist with another stormer of an EP, packed with peak-time tackle and knowing nods to her rave roots. Following the titanic success of 2023's 'Piano Heaven' i also on Heist i the Berlin-based maverick had plenty to live up to on 'Get Up', and she certainly doesn't disappoint. 'Deep Inside Love' is a euphoric house pumper with uplifting keys and big room swagger, while 'Higher' leans into the rave nostalgia that typifies much of today's underground club milieu i all stabs, vocals and hands-in-the-air intention. 'Get Up' drops the tempo just a touch, offering a warm, dubby breather laced with classic house moods. Rounding it off is a slick remix from Demi Riquisimo, who gives 'Higher' a semi-retro twist. As ever with Cinthie, this is club music with heart, soul and a large dose of fun.
