Review: Originally released at a time when Kruder & Dorfmeister reigned supreme and Germany and Austria boasted some of the finest dub-fired downtempo producers around, Bozoo Bajou's debut album, Satta, was something a sleeper hit. As this 25th anniversary reissue proves, it remains a deliciously languid, laidback and glassy-eyed affair that mixes subtly jazzy instrumentation (Rhodes, jazz guitar etc), dubby bass and luscious string arrangements with slow-motion trip-hop beats and dusty samples. The plentiful highlights include 'Night Over Manaus', a samba-soaked shuffler, luscious opener 'YMA', jazzy head-nodder 'Under Mi Sensi' and the exotic, G-Stone style stoned haziness of 'Bakar'.

Review: The iconic Late Night Tales series scored a real doozy when they managed to lock in Don Letts for for his instalment. The British film director, DJ and musician is a vital part of the UK's musical fabric from his days making videos for The Clash and Elvis Costello to his work with the Big Audio Dynamite band he co-founded. All that history is distilled into this sublime selection of sounds across four vital sounds fo wax. There's reggae, dub, ska, a cover of Joy Division, head twisting goodness from Gentleman's Dub Club and plenty of exclusives. It's an essential listen, basically.

Dubplate #1: Space Within Art
Cat: MYD 001. Rel: 22 Nov 21
  1. Dunya 2 (extended mix) (5:24)
  2. D Dub Retwist (4:27)
  3. Space Within Art (Dubplate mix) (3:55)
  4. Jacob Dub (4:14)
  5. Augustus (2:40)
Review: Persian's close working relationship with the Mysticisms label continues apace with this new release. Titled Dubplate #1: Space Within Art, this latest 10" features more of the artful, mixed up ravey dubbings Persian has scattered throughout his long and winding career. 'Dunya 2' is a potent club stepper rolling at 150 with plenty of system pressure folded into its bones, while 'D Dub Retwist' drops down into a rolling breakbeat skunk-out peppered with sample snatches and a hefty sub line. 'Space Within Art (Dubplate Mix)' takes on a more worldly, wiggy stance dripping in 90s pop-dance magic. 'Jacob Dub' gets into a positive skank and 'Augustus' cools things down with a more roots-minded excursion clearly doffing its cap to one Mr Pablo.

Summer Madness (reissue)
Cat: STIX 054. Rel: 06 Sep 21
  1. Summer Madness (3:19)
  2. Use Me (3:39)
Review: Stix Records is the sub-label of superb French outlet Favorite Recordings, and it is reserved for heavy dub cuts. This one finds label regular Mato reworking a classic reggae roller first written by Kool & The Gang. His gorgeous version is perfect for hot summer nights with its languid Fender Rhodes leads and sun kissed beats. It's loved up and perfectly, frankly. On the flip is a reggae rework of Bill Withers', who is sadly no long with us, 'Use Me,' repackaged with a playful harmonica lead and more grinding chords over the gently tumbling beats.

Look No Further
Cat: AJX 601S. Rel: 02 Nov 21
  1. Look No Further (3:49)
  2. Further (dub) (3:47)
Review: Acid Jazz's latest 7" is a particularly lovely one from the Soul Revivers. But alongside original members reggae veteran Nick Manasseh and David Hill formerly of the Ballistic Brothers, they have enlisted the next level trumpet talents of Ms Maurice, who is the bandleader of excellent Afro-jazz ensemble Kokoroko and also a member of jazz septet Nerija. Their 'Look No Further' is full of nostalgic dub sounds but also a serene sense of soul. A flipside live-on-the-mixing-board dub from Soul Revivers' Nick Manasseh pairs things back to an even more immersive and pillowy groove.

Cat: HR 7S222. Rel: 22 Nov 21
  1. Still Water (3:47)
  2. Depth Charge (2:45)
Review: The superb 'Still Water' by the dark prince of reggae Keith Hudson is a brilliantly psychedelic and soul-tinged classic. The legendary producer put it out in 1964 and it now gets its first ever standalone release. The flip side dub 'Depth Charge' comes from the same sessions and same album, Pick A Dub. The rhythms were crafted by Lee Scratch Perry's band The Upsetters as well as the Wailers rhythm section, Barrett Brothers, Augustus Pablo and Earl Chinn Smith and make for a fine take on the original by the Four Tops.

  4. The Morning Show (instrumental) (3:56)
  5. Haly Gully (unreleased version) (4:29)
Review: The hard-digging record fiends at Kalita are back with more brilliance. This one is the first-ever retrospective of work by Jamaican-born artist Desmond Chambers. The first tine is a proudly politically aware tune previously only avialbel on his 1987 album Tiger Born, while the single 'The Morning Show' has before now only been available as the B side of little known single 'I Have Seen Love In Your Eyes.' The two other tracks are mega cult, hugely loved acid-infused dub snakers with boogie-infused rhythms. Original copies will cost you a huge amount so make sure you snap this one up asap.

Review: Jamaican reggae harmony group The Silvertones were formed in 1964. The band was founded by Gilmore Grand and Keith Coley with the addition of Delroy Denton completing the lineup. It wasn't until 1973 that they recorded their debut album, Silver Bullets, with production taken care of by the late great Lee Scratch Perry. It was actually the first ever album tone produced in Perry's iconic Black Arc Studio and came on Trojan Records with single like 'I'll Take You Home' and 'Rejoice Jah Jah Children.' It is packed with laid back island sounds and beautiful vocals and has been pressed here on nice heavy vinyl for a warm and fulsome feel.

Review: On the latest volume in the Late Night Tales series, Don Letts has dug deep into his crates to present a selection of some of his favourite dubbed-out reggae cover versions, alongside dub style remixes of more contemporary covers. It's a simple concept, brilliantly executed, with Letts offering up some exclusive, dubplate style remixes amongst the classic cuts and recent gems. Highlights include, but are in no way limited to, the full vocal dub of Capitol 1212's take on Joy Dvision's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', Mad Professor's insanely weighty 2021 dub of John Holt classic 'You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine', Blackbox Recorder's oddball reggae-soul version of 'Uptown Top Rankin' and Easy Stars All Stars' deliciously mystical interpretation of The Beatles' 'Within You Without You'.

Review: First released in the UK by Tottenham-based Atra Records in 1974, The Black Breast Has Produced Her Best Flesh of My Skin Blood By Blood has long been considered one of the edgiest roots albums of the period and a must-have for serious reggae collectors. The album resulted in its creator, the sadly departed Keith Hudson, being dubbed "the dark prince of reggae". Listening back to this welcome reissue, it's easy to see why. For starters, the lyrical content is highly politically charged and righteous, while Hudson's weighty musical arrangements are far more trippy, hazy and dimly lit than those found on most roots reggae records of the period. This edition also includes three additional tracks not found on the original release, plus exhaustive sleeve notes from Hudson biographer Vincent Ellis.

  2. Natty Roots (Paolo Baldini remix - version 1) (4:18)
  3. Natty Roots (Paolo Baldini remix - version 2) (4:15)
Review: Pressure Sounds come through with a super 10" here with Natty Roots Controller mixed three different ways by Paolo Baldini. It is a Barry Brown original and the first remix is one with models of echo and reverb, plenty of knob twisting and heavily affected hi-hats and a rolling rhythm. Version 1 of the remix is heavier and more upright, with just as much bass weight, then the second version is lit up with some sci-fi effects. All three are delicious dubs for those who like it heady.

Review: Wairunga is a Kiwi beauty spot that's long been one of the favoured locations for Fat Freddy's Drop to kick back between tours and recording sessions. It's fitting then that the long-serving New Zealand collective have named their new album in its honour. The set itself showcases the band at their very best, delivering their usual attractive fusions of dub, reggae and soul, in which Joe Dukie's effortlessly soulful vocals rise above warming bass, heady electronics, crisp guitars and hazy horns. It's diverse enough to fend off any accusations that they're resting on their laurels, but also familiar enough to please the band's vast army of fans. In other words, it's a Fat Freddy's Drop album, and a rather good one at that.

Review: For their first-ever full-length project, Lion Charge has coaxed a fantastic debut album out of Dublin native Sabab. The dub master serves up plenty of irresistible contemporary joints that showcase his studio trickery and penchant for spaced-out sounds. It comes on suitably fat 180-gram vinyl and showcases the sounds of the OG 70s era while also adding to a nice musical journey overall. The flabby bass, the off-balance rhythms, the hissing hi-hats that take off into space - it's all here and its all beautifully nostalgic as well as being stylishly finished with a modern touch.

Review: The good folks at Happy People are busy this month with a couple of super limited and hand stamped, hand numbered 7's. This one features some beautifully tripped out and experimental dub sounds from the angelic voice of Sarah Gleeson. Produced by Dan Taliras, 'Everything' has an icy sound with clean digit-chords and Gleeson's emotive vocals having in the air up top. After the opening dub, you can flip it over for a rework that goes heavy on the reverb, with long tailed pads and hits that ricochet around the mix.

Review: Since the release of the dub techno-fired Perspectives album in May 2020, Konstantinos Soublis AKA Fkuxion has concentrated on creating "more intimate work" that draws more heavily on his own emotional state of mind during the production process. As a result, Parallel Moves is even more atmospheric than his previous output - and that's saying something - with subtle shifts in style and tone throughout. Sure, it's still rooted in dub techno and ambient dub, but also utilises modified and manipulated jazz instrumentation, deep post-dubstep rhythms, synth-sporting deep techno and deep house grooves, and pitched-down beatdown style beats laden with classic downtempo sounds. As musical evolutions go, it's undeniably impressive.

Review: It may have taken 42 years, but the Pop Group have finally delivered a dub-wise interpretation of their incredible debut album Y, a 1979 post-punk masterpiece that remains one of the finest dub-influenced, avant-garde rock sets of the period. Fittingly, original producer - and UK dub legend - Dennis Bovell MBE is once again behind the desk, delivering weighty, skeletal and breath-taking interpretations that retain the freewheeling attitude and sonic intensity of the Bristol band's 1979 versions/Skeletal, echo-laden, bass-heavy and impressively stripped back, Bovell's new dub mixes are uniformly brilliant, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the sludgy, slow-motion take on 'Blood Money', the experimental ambient dub treatment of 'Savage Sea', the dancefloor-ready revision of 'We Are The Fire' and the trippy dub-jazz mix of 'Don't Call Me Pain'.

Th pioneering studio technician lay it down in 1983 for Jet Star with acclaimed session musicians such as Sly & Robbie, Noel 'Skully' Simms, Uziah 'Sticky' Thompson, Earl 'Chinna' Smith and Willie Lindo. Packed with spaceship sounds, popping hits and oodles of echo and fever it is an earthy dub collection with lo-fi guitars and heady leads that sound track any smoke session to perfection. Original copies are pricey on second hand markets so don't sleep on this vital reissue.

This new hook up is a winding journey that opens with some truly mind bending and psyched out 60s sounds riding on a trippy dub, and littered with samples from a public service broadcast on drugs. It's somehow a dark yet euphoric dub with a killer backbeat and futuristic edge A dub version peels things back to the drum work and lets the magic of this fine partnership shine.

Review: We might out of summer and into darker nights and colder days but you can warm yourself to your core with this new 12" of crystal clean digital steppers from LoDubs. Dandelion kicks off with the easy going vibes and subtle warrior leads of 'Time For The Rebel' then Bukkha meets Sarah Tobias on 'Inna Rubadub' which has some beautifully sunny flutes and tasing sax riffs. 'End of the Line' is a nice rhythm from Jane Bee & Roger Robinson before Bukkha's 'Inna Rubadub' gets a twisted sci-fi rework.

  4. Too Dub (Only A Few Do That) (5:08)
Review: Henry & Louis hooked up with Prince Green for this one way back in 1995. It has been a cult underground favourite ever since and finally it gets a long awaited reissue which will save you having to fork out three figures-plus for an original copy. 'Too Late' is polished electronic dub with impassioned vocals praising jah. 'Too Dub When Rastafari Dubs' strips out much of the word play and ups the studio trickery, then two further dubs take up the b-side. 'Too Dub (Will Be Their Cry)' then ups the drums with a more muscular feel, and last of all comes a version laden with echo and reverb.

  7. Wire (Leaping dub) (5:16)
  8. Group Four (Security Forces dub) (8:07)
Review: Way back in 1998 when Massive Attack's career-defining "Mezzanine" was first released, legendary dub technician Mad Professor cooked up some radical reworking. They now get their first official release alongside dubs of two tracks that never actually made it onto the album - Metal Banshee: a dub version of "Superpredators" which was a cover of Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Metal Postcard", and "Wire", which was actually recorded for the film "Welcome to Sarajevo". Wild effects, plenty of knob twiddling and oodles of reverb define this freaky late night collection and mark another essential release in the catalogue of the already legendary Mad Professor.

  11. Soldier & Police War (4:01)
Review: First released way back in 1976 and here appearing on wax for the first time in decades, Colombia Colly is the single greatest work of Jamaican toaster Pat Francis AKA Jah Lion. Francis was a talented mic man with a distinctive vocal style - a mix of gruff, patois-heavy proto-raps and scat style improvisations - but his recorded performances were rarely as incendiary as his performances at dances. It took producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry to get the best out of him, which he did and then some on Colombia Colly. The dub style backing tracks provided by Perry were amongst the best of his Black Ark period and made extensive use of re-played and re-framed riddims previously heard on his productions for the likes of Max Romeo, the Heptones and Junior Murvin.

  4. No Age (dub) (9:55)
Review: Is there a more famous nutcase in music than Lee Scratch Perry? The legendary producer is still very much on the musical money, though, no matter how weird he gets in person. This record for Stones Throw finds him working with Peaking Lights' Aaron Coyes and Argentinian dubber Ivan Diaz Mathe on a series of heavyweight tunes that are brilliantly psychedelic. The title track is a cosmic stepper then "No Age" is a wandering dub with oodles of trippy effects and stoner leads that make way for some of his textbook vocal musings on "Magik." After immersive closer "No Age" you'll be keen to do it all again.

Viaje En Dub
Cat: JMANSP 001. Rel: 30 Sep 21
  1. Viaje En Dub (4:20)
  2. Viaje En Dub (instrumental) (4:15)
Review: For the latest volume in their Special Products series, Jazzman has decided to deliver a first ever vinyl pressing of Danay Suarez's 'Viaje En Dub', a 2019 cut best known for featuring on the soundtrack to the Need For Speed: Heat video game. Making it available to vinyl overs is a great idea because it's undoubtedly one of the Cuban singer's most evocative and alluring cuts to date. Suarez is naturally the headline attraction, delivering a sweet and sultry Spanish lead vocal (and, seemingly, the backing vocals too) whose delay-laden production is a neat fit for the languid, dub-wise digital reggae backing that sits beneath. There's also a chance to enjoy the track without her vocals on the flip, via an even more dub-fired Instrumental Mix that has previously never been released.
