Expansions (feat Shniece) (4:06)
Expansions (dub) (4:13)
Review: Prince Fatty's new independent record label Lovedub Limited kicks off with a super 7" from the man himself. It is in fact something of an homage to the 1970s jazz-funk of Lonnie Liston Smith but with some hefty dub and reggae treatment. Shniece Mcmenamin stars on vocals and brings plenty of summer soul to the groove which is also lit up with free-flying flute lines over steady reggae rhythms that will sink you in deep to Winston "Horseman" Williams and Carlton "Bubblers" Ogilvie's drums, organ and piano. On the flip is the dub with the iconic Liston-Smith melody leading you through a lazy afternoon in style.

Review: The word on the street is that treasured oddball label and erstwhile record shop Low Company is calling time on its operations with this typically introverted, misfit album from Static Cleaner Lost Reward. The label's astute curation has led unsuspecting listeners to incredible music which doesn't seem to make sense anywhere else, and so it goes with this outstanding final record from Melbroune/Naarm oddity Tarquin Manek. Low Company spell out the vibe of the record best - "echo-distressed, loop-me-crazy song-forms, zonked exotica, slacker-techno and crudely soldered, seasick cyberpunk." If that doesn't spark your interest, then what will?

Review: Fans rejoice - Lord Echo's limited vinyl-only singles is available digitally worldwide at last, as well as compiled on a vinyl album presented in an embossed Japanese printed sleeve and obi strip. Not one to succumb to the pressures of our capitalist overlords, the enigmatic producer continues to tinker away on various projects, including the hefty task of renovating an abandoned Masonic lodge into a recording studio in rural New Zealand. While we patiently await new music, we can revel in versions that escaped the typical overthinking that occurs during the album process, instead reflecting the spontaneity and freedom of a touring artist. All tracks here bar one ('Thinking of Dub') were initially released on short-run 7" singles for Echo's early Japan tours, made only available to dedicated fans who attended the live shows. Without further ado, Soundway presents Lord Echo's 'Rarities', a collection of sought-after singles now made very much accessible to you the people.

Review: The Emotional Rescue label has done a superb job of shining a light on the British post punk scene over the last decade or so. It now does so once more in fantastic fashion with a compilation of tunes from Bristol's short lived but much loved Recreational Records. The 10 tunes have been remastered and recut and they all sound as good now as ever. Highlights include X-Certs - 'Untogether' and Electric Guitar's 'Don't Wake The Baby' which sum up the collection perfect with their jangling dub rhythms, heavily treated vocals and oodles of delay all twisting your melon. This releases was included in Bandcamp's Essential Releases 2022.

Review: It's time to touch base with Errol and Alex Rita's Touching Bass here as the small but already great-sounding label hits release number eight with this fine Babylon Shuffle release. All six tracks from Last Nubian and Geneva's Sweet Fruity Brunch blend the sounds of inner city London with deep house and broken beats, starting with the party vibes of 'Call Yu Out'. 'In Da Morning/Shaka' (feat Achante) then has lithe and wispy synths shimmering over metallic broken beats with great vocals adding soul and 'Mango In Da Parish' is a b-side highlight with its beautifully delicate house drums keeping the dancefloor afloat next to jazzy flutes.

Gradually (version) (4:06)
Review: After a string of singles on his own Breadminster County Council label and a standout 10" for Accidental Meetings last year, Elijah Minnelli slides over to ZamZam for an excursion into his particular vision of dub shot through with cumbia and calyspo. The OG version of 'Gradually' has a weighty melancholy thanks to the low-pitched vocal coursing through the track, with languid brass pealing out up top. The Version on the flip naturally boils the stock down and makes a strong, dubwise stew with the attention to quality we take as a given when ZamZam are involved.

Sweet Dub (4:16)
Review: Isle Of Jura always deals in left-of-centre sounds from the vast dub universe. This drop from Sonia Whittingham originally came back in 1988 and is a real clean lovers rock gem. Because of that, it's a much sought-after 12" that is often listed for over 100 quid on second-hand sites. This reissue allows you to swerve all that and as well as the original, with its sweet-as-you-like vocal and clean digital synths. Flip it over for the Love Dub Band's more heady and stoner-style 'Sweet Dub.'

Dub It Naturally
Percussion Dub
Review: French electro dub investigators Froid Dub made quite the splash with their debut release An Iceberg Cruising The Jamaican Coastline. They took some time to deliver a follow-up, this year's Deep Blue Bass, but now they're back in quick fashion with a further mini-LP of head-nodding meditations. As ever, the magic lies in their fusion of DIY synth explorations with the time-honoured processing of true dub music, and the duo's earnest appreciation for the roots of the sound shine through in their approach. 'Treasure' has a rawness to it which chimes with some of the early crossovers between UK soundsystem styles with techno, such as those achieved by Iration Steppas. There's a more obvious backroom slant to the placid pace of 'Dub It Naturally', but as ever there's a spiciness to the synth work which puts it in a different zone to straight up dub. If you value dubwise abstractions, this record is a must-check.

Review: When it comes to digging deep into the vast reserves of dub and reggae the world has amassed since the 60s and 70s, few labels do it with a more knowing and cultured ear than Original Gravity. This time they look to The Pioneers and Prince Deadly for another crucial pair of riddims. There is a ska twist to The Pioneers' original 'Jump Up!' thanks to its bold brass, woody back beats and plucked guitar riffs, all topped off with a loved up vocal. Deadly steps up on the backside to dub things out to perfection.

Love & Unity - "I Just Don't Care" (7:41)
Seargent Pepper - "Cut From Master Tape" (8:15)
Review: Part of a fresh string of reissues of Love & Unity 12"s - one of many star aliases to grace the annals of South London reggae label Studio 16 - comes this headfirst collision between L&U and Seargent Pepper. Sharing similar instrumentals, 'I Just Don't Care' hears a blissful femme soprano glide elegantly across its bubblings - the instrumental is super well-rounded, sawn-off. On the B-side, meanwhile, there's Pepper's 'Cut From Master Tape', which hears Pepper toast the rhythm lackadaisically, as endlessly hazy dub effects resound and a janky double-time kick propels it all forward.

Review: Alpha Steppa love putting out great albums - there have been several over the years and most of them on this label. Some have been solo, some alongside the likes of Ata Fall, while this one is a hook up with Welleie Seyon across a limited edition double 12". As always it showcases plenty of versatile production styles unified by some serious low end dub. All 12 tracks are as captivating as the next with Wellette's distinctive voice and unique sense of lyrical wit and flow making a perfect complement to Alpha Steppa's unmistakably weighty sound designs.

Having dabbled with minimal on Kompakt, Thomas Fehlmann took a step back and Alex Paterson linked up with Youth and Dreadzone's Tim Bran to make an expansive work now considered amongst their finest. Dr Paterson even posited its role as a natural successor to all-time classic UFOrb. Now it's been remastered and pressed up on vinyl for the very first time, which means the legions of die-hard Orb fans will be all over this one.

Illusion (DJ Duckcomb Discomix) (7:38)
Review: Noted reggae vocalist Barry Biggs comes under the Emotional Rescue microscope here with celebrated LA digger Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb remixing one of his cuts. First up is the original version of 'Illusion' which has big pianos over the clean digital dub. The soaring vocal is obscured by plenty of lush effects and melodies. After a version twists and contorts the original, the DJ Duckcomb Discomix slows things down and ups the dazzling disco vibes but keeps the dub dubby bottom end to ensure plenty of dance floor impact. This is a classy one as ever from this label.

True Love
Review: Released in 1984 on Bebop's, Clarence Park's 'I'll Be There' and 'True Love' is a classic reggae cut that's become hard to find, hugely sought after and even more expensive if you do. It is currently listed at well over 300 quid to this new label has been launched to make it more widely available. The passionate vocals are a plea for love over timeless reggae riddims on the a-side 'I'll Be There' while on the back is the more slow and steady, deep cut and sunny 'I'll Be There.' It's a beauty for some lovely hazy sessions.

Review: Mellow Rose and Seargent Pepper's 'Imitation Love' proved a big-hitting reggae 45rpm when it first dropped and so now it has been reissued on this sweet, limited edition red vinyl 12". It first came on Studio 16 back in August of last year and is already worth a pretty penny on second hand markets. The A-side is a super sweet lover's rock sound with falsetto vocals up top, acoustic guitars and fleshy low ends sinking you into a romantic rhythm. On the flip, Seargent Pepper gets to work on 'Dub And Rub Ina Imitation Way' which is more sci-fi and futuristic in its sound designs, all with a hazy and stoner edge.

Review: Dub innovator, celebrated smoker of the herb and much-loved nutter Lee Scratch Perry has been gone a while now but his musical legacy will never fade. Partly, of course, because he made so damn much of it during a prolific career, most of it at his own iconic Black Arc studios. Not so much of it was solo work but Heaven is, and is also the final album he wrote before passing in late 2021. His contribution to Jamaican music knows no bounds and took the form of him being producer, arranger, writer and artist. His unique take on the island's signature sound is present and correct here.

Review: The Vivian Jackson label has locked in this crucial reissue of a roots classic from Yabby U, a late Jamaican artist and producer who released it originally back in 1977. 'Chant Down Babylon' is a warm one with lazy and rolling drums and natty acoustic guitar riffs with Jah worshiping vocals and Babylon yearnings that unfurl up top with a real smoothness. On the flip, you will find the 'Chant Dub Mix' which removes the vocal chantings and allows the hats to hiss and the snares to take off like UFOs while the fleshy low end is couched in oodles of reverb.

Review: There are seemingly no limits to the music Emotional Rescue will put out. This time they look back to the post punk scene of Bristol in the early 80s. Mouth was a short-lived outfit that put out just a couple of releases, but each one blazed a trail though leftfield percussive sounds, wave, weird jazz and electronics. Andy Guy and Rob Merrill were the main members with the likes of Nellie Hooper also in the band's orbit. This record is packed with tribal drumming and floating horns, broken dubs and avant-jazz but all with a proudly DIY attitude. It's packed with heady moments and wild steppers that havent aged a bit and still sound future.

Of all the near-infinite reams of experimental dub production orbiting Sherwood's On-U Sound label, African Head Charge is surely one of the greatest and most revered projects and now after a pause since 2011's Voodoo of The Godsent their partnership is back on. A Trip To Bolgatanga takes us on a psychoactive journey to Noah's hometown in North Ghana, guided by his trademark, fiercely expressive percussion and Sherwood's mixing desk acrobatics, weighing in heavy and loaded with disorienting potential, which is just how we like it.

For The Love Of Money (disco dub) (4:14)
Review: Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", a one-off collaboration between producer Davitt Sigerson and reggae musician Mike Dorane, has long been considered something of a classic by those who like their disco to come with a big dose of dub-wise flavour. Here the instrumental O'Jays cover, which originally appeared on the Movers label in 1976, is given the remix treatment by long-time fans Mr Bongo. The superb A-side, in which Dorane's instrumental talents take centre stage, naturally comes accompanied by the frequently played Dub interpretation, a typically wild and bass-heavy affair that sounds like it was mixed "live" in one take in true Lee Perry/King Tubby style. If it's not already in your collection, it should be.

No In Between (4:47)
Review: With a catalogue that contains a mixture of mind-altering chuggers, deep house, disco and Balearic beats, second-guessing what Craig Bratley will release next has always been a tricky proposition. Even so, joining forces with Brooklyn maverick - and honey-voiced singer - Amy Douglas for a spot of bleeping revivalist synth soul was one of them. Douglas is at her emotive best on the B-side original mix, singing sweetly about complicated relationships over a thrillingly lo-fi low-tempo groove rich in squelchy bass and 8-bit lead lines. The A-side 'Ashigaru Dub' is arguably even better, brilliantly re-framing the track as a heady, intoxicating and sub-heavy dub workout of the sort that Mad Professor probably knocks out in his sleep. In a word: inspired!

The visionary artist is one of the most crucial in the reggae game over the years and is the man who is most often credited with having popularised the use of the melodica in reggae. His most fertile and influential period was the 1970s and tunes made them helped to take the sound global. This vinyl collection mixes up rare dubs and out-of-print tracks with tunes from all across his long and successful career.

Top Of My List (dub) (4:12)
Review: Soul Sugar's signature, fruitful blend of reggae and soul once more oozes forth with 'Top Of My List'. Featuring the vocals of Shniece McMenamin, the track is a liquefyingly dreamy song, unhesitatingly letting in the sunny rays of rocksteady through the Venetians. But in contrast to the mood, it also tells the dubious story of our protagonist placing their self-respect and self-love in the hands of a former lover, with social-fabric-tearing consequences, a funk from which McMenamin sings to help pick up the pieces. The dub version helps; it's a refractive and soft version, emphasising more atmosphere than hardness or forward propulsion.

The original is a full-flavoured rhythm with nice wooden hits and brassy horns accompanying the fat-bottomed low end while the vocal is smooth up top. A dub mix and then a super dub adds even more weight to the low end and on the flipside is another roots icon in the form of Prince Alla who adds fresh lyrics to 'Man On Board'. The various overdubs and vocals were recorded in Jamaica with mixdowns taken care of by the legendary Caveman.

Shocking Skank (mix 2) (4:05)
Review: Hardcore dub heads will know that Mafia & Fluxy's 'Shocking Skank' was first dropped back in 2020 on this River Bank Records label. It's a popular cut from the label heads aka the prolific production duo of drummer Dave and keyboard player Leroy. They work in Jamaica and the UK and have put out a rather mad 27 albums up to now. This gem has warrior leads and wobbling low ends with some bright, light-emitting chords that get you standing tall. Mix 2 on the flip is a subtle tweak.

Review: Blind Prophet comes springing into ear shot following recent heavyweight turns on ZamZam and Green King Cuts to lay down the soundsystem gospel for US torch bearers Dub Stuy. 'Good Morning Zion' rides on a tough, swung beat with Daweh Congo on mic duties, cut with the attendant dub on the same side for the disco mix experience should the dance require it. On the flip there are further version excursions taking the track in different directions, with the 'Dubplate' mix going in especially hard on the FX sends, which is just how we like it.

Review: Following on from the CD version of this reissue, 17 North Prada now follow it up with a welcome vinyl edition. Prince Far I worked with Joe Gibbs's house band The Professionals on Under Heavy Manners, his 1976 full-length recorded at Gibbs's studio in Kingston, Jamaica. His messages throughout his career were always focussed on social and political issues and lend this album its extra lyrical edge on top of the killer rhythms. Gibbs composed all of the tracks bar one from Errol Thompson and it is generally considered one of his finer works. Snap this one up now because it will soon disappear again.

Review: After Prince Lincoln Thompson and the Royal Rasses Band recorded the Experience album in 1979, they did the honourable thing and followed up with its dub counterpart, Harder Na Rass. Originally released on Warrior Records in the UK, it's everything you want from a roots-adjacent dub album, mixed by none other than Prince Jammy in the mighty King Tubby's studio. The sound is outstanding, with the percussion especially cutting through the mix and the musicality remaining intact despite the focus on dubwise versioning. Dub devotees take heed, this album has got everything you want, freshly remastered and cut nice and loud.

Review: Heavenly Recordings' ongoing rifle through their vaults of remixes - a bulging one, since they've been going since the turn of the 90s - has reached volumes seven and eight, which are presented on one double-disc set. It's naturally a varied and high-quality collection, with the myriad highlights including Hardway Brothers' throbbing, acid-flecked 'Live at the SSL Dub' of David Holmes and Raven Violet's 'It's Over if We've Run Out of Love', Bruise's shimmering, garage-flecked revision of Audiobooks' 'The Doll', Forgemasters' moody Steel City house take on Working Men's Club, Space Afrika's decidedly intergalactic (and genuinely brilliant) re-imagining of The Orielles''Beams', Pilooski's analogue-rich rub of 'Miami' by Baxter Drury, and Black Science Orchestra's vintage dancefloor dub of Unloved's 'Number in My Phone'.

Review: The last album the mighty Lee Scratch Perry recorded before he died was Heaven, freshly released on Burning Sounds and leaving us with a lasting memory of his indelible influence on modern music. To accompany the full-length, the label have picked the versions of two album tracks and given them an airing on a standalone 12", cut nice and loud for the dance. 'Shining Dub' takes up the A side, and 'Shut Up Dub' takes the flip, and both dive deep into the echo chamber style Perry himself helped pioneer so many decades prior.

Marcia Griffiths - "Feel Like Jumping" (3:36)
Dub Specialist - "Feel Like Jumping" (part 2) (3:45)
Review: Stone cold classic alert! First released on Studio One back in the late 1970s and a guaranteed reggae floor-filler ever since, 'Feel Like Jumping' is not only one of Coxsone Dodd's most potent productions, but also one of Marcia Griffiths' greatest moments. Now available again on a heavyweight vinyl pressing with extra bass-weight, the track us built around an infectious rhythm, dancing horn riffs, sweet backing vocals and a life-affirming lead vocal from Griffiths' celebrating the sheer joy of dancing. The flipside Dub Specialist revision is superb too - a genuinely bone-shaking, sub-heavy dancefloor dub that places echoing snippets of Griffiths' lead vocal and reverberating horns at the heart of the action.
