Review: SATZ is a brand new label out of Georgia which is set to shine a light on the local scene and a wealth of its most impressive minimal and tech explorers. It is the already celebrated Z@P who opens up with a future sound full of sci-fi motifs and sleek synths over hard edge drums. Gio Shengelia & Toke then join forces for the stiff tech and industrial tinged groove of 'Supermarket on Mars' while Do Or Die spin out of the cosmos and into a turbulent universe of angsty synths, twitching modulations and wild acid. Closer 'Manmachine' is a firmly rooted and motorik groove to drive you late into the night.

Review: 25yrs after the emergence of Steve O'Sullivan's dub moniker, Lempuyang has the honour of presenting the first full length album of all-new material.

Over the span of 9 tracks, Steve takes us on a version excursion, exploring a mixture of dub rhythms alongside a healthy dose of wizardry to work the floor.

Also featuring collaborations from Hidden Sequence, Another Channel, and vocals from Prince Morella.

Strictly for connoisseurs & utterly essential!

Review: Dance music stars don't come much bigger or more iconic than Carl Cox. The big man with the big smile and famous gap in his teeth has been at the cutting edge for decades. He plays all across the spectrum with high energy and a really infectious style. Now the legend returns with his first album in over a decade and it comes on BMG. It was written over the last two years at his home studio in Melbourne and takes his sound to a whole new level. It is also being played live by Carl on the road right now.

Review: Echocord is one of the strongest forces in the dub techno scene, and in 20 years they've remained true to their creative vision. As with all the best of the genre, there's a timeless quality to this 20th anniversary release, which brings in some of the label's most trusted hands to fashion a compilation which speaks to the evergreen quality of the dub techno scene. There are some fresher turns from Babe Roots & Another Channel, while Mathias Kaden dons his Mathimidori alias, but diehard label fans will be looking to the likes of Deadbeat, Mikkel Metal and Quantec for that sublime, immersive Echocord experience.

Review: A welcome return from Deepchord, who shows the newset of dub techno players how, exactly, it is done. After 5 years, he returns to Soma Records with 'Functional Extraits 1' here, charting shuffly and subtle trips through echoic hallways ('Mapping') and rain-pattered biomech rainforests ('Shale'), and scanning the post-Earth wasteland for any semblance of a real reggae chord. With the final track almost entirely consisting of texture and bass, we can happily declare this to be next-level dub techno.

  3. The Embrace
Review: The Stars sound is all about cosmic techno visions and that is proven here from the first moment of 'Of All The Worlds.' It's got its head up above the stars with cracking perc and beats all overlaid with supple synths. 'The Embrace' is more punchy but just as sonorous and a Nuron remix goes deep. The extra background details of this are worth noting too for real purists - the vinyl version comes with superb sleeve and label artwork by Abdul Haqq and the tunes were mastered by the one and only Matt Colton at Metropolis, then cut to 180g heavyweight vinyl.

Review: Last year Woody McBride's Minnesota label Sounds. reissued the Lovers EP, a 12" he originally released back in 1996 under his Modal alias. Now that release gets a bumper double pack of remixes, leading in with some Mariana trench depth charge gear from Roy Davis and DJ Skull. The Terry Mullan mix is a springy, 909 techno workout, while the Boom Box mix takes a lighter, drum machine jazz approach. There are so many old-school heroes involved here - Hyperactive, DJ Slip, Mystic Bill - but then what else would you expect from someone as invested in the scene and community as Woody McBride?

Like desperately scrambling around for your glasses after having them nudged off by a boorish raver in the dance, this EP perfectly captures the sensation of smudged vision and drug-fuelled wonkiness via the neighboring modes of acid, trance and house. Choice cuts include 'Distant', with its dreamy synth washes, and 'Blurry Vision', a mid-set mood-locker.

Review: Back in 2020, hip-hop, breaks and electro stalwart Freddy Fresh decided to turn his hand to vintage-sounding house and techno, self-releasing a set of tracks called The Harvest online. Rawax were impressed, with the popular label deciding to put the pick of the cuts out on vinyl. Title track 'The Harvest' sets the tone, with the veteran producer wrapping a house-tempo, post-electro groove in sustained organ chords, spacey synths and bubbly electronic melodies. 'House-Spanner' sees him doff a cap to The Middle of Nowhere-era Orbital (seriously, it's very reminiscent of the Hartnoll brothers' late '90s output), while 'Misunderstood' is a woozy, delay-laden chunk of early morning U.S deep house. Elsewhere, the deep house dreaminess continues on the interestingly swung 'Twain', and clonking, TB-303 speckled 'Horlywagon'.

Review: Woody McBride's Sounds label continues to dive back in the archives and revive some absolute gold standard techno for modern diggers. This collab effort between McBride (in his DJ ESP guise) and DJ Skull originally came out in 1995, and it still sounds fierce to this day. 'The Drive' is a stripped down tool with all the right chops to tweak out a locked-in raver, but 'G-Rated' is the real gem on the record. In a blistering hailstorm of 303 squelch you get a definitive example of acid techno at its finest. 'The Power' might well find relevance in the present day trance-techno scene thanks to its unsettling leads and relentless forwards thrust.

Review: The first Soul Capsule release gets a timely reissue - certainly if the silly prices it's reached of late on the second hand market - as well as a getting a loving remastering courtesy of D&M. All three parts are swampy, sweaty tech workouts that bump along with an almost indecent willingness to tempt you onto the floor and a groove with way more sexy swing than the minimal genre usually has contact with. Part two is traditionally the most celebrated of the three if internet chatter is to be believed, but some wonderfully subtle go-go percussion makes part three the most immediate of the bunch, with part one's distinctly darkside atmospherics and snippet of female gospel voice clearly wield an air of the classic.

Review: Rene Wise takes the reins of legendary techno label Blueprint's 65th EP and it is a hard edge and late night menace form start to finish. Opener 'Shaman Whistle' has an eerie and haunting lead synth that has you peering deep into the arrangement and then 'Don't Care' offers a more funked up tech framework with punchy double kicks and scintillating glassy sound effects. There is plenty of hammer in the kicks of 'Frown Like Brown' as well as some tripped out synth motifs and closer 'Knock Motion' then strips things back to a chunky bit of muscular techno brilliance.

They offer up two tracks of their signature sounds with the opener 'Land of Heroes' being a nice dubbed out and elastic groove peppered with a mournful lead synth. Review: Twenty-odd years ago, Korg dropped their four now famous Electribe pieces of studio kit. Pancratio never quite managed to get them into his setup until he decided in 2020 to use the machines on their own. The results of his jams on a drum machine, analog modelling synthesizer, sampler and a music workstation are presented here and make for perfectly punchy and timeless techno cuts with bumping beats and wired electronics. He says, "the title, as well as the aesthetic of the project, are inspired by a future-retro approach to early electronics and 70s Italian product advertisement."

  2. Interview With An Alien (Delano Smith remix)
Review: A hard to find sci-fi Detroit techno classic - it's featured everywhere from Marcel Dettmann to Zip's SW sets.- gets a timely reissue complete with a new, super solid Delano Smith remix. It's hard not to love the original in all its futuristic glory, led by a sturdy four-to-the-floor pummelling but boasting a throbbing neo-disco bassline - imagine a lost Gorgio Moroder classic being remade by Jeff Mills in PurposeMaker mode. But the Delano Smith remix updates it for modern palates, ironically by delving back even further, to the early 70s model Kraftwerk from whom he borrows some very austere but classy synth sounds and a touch of electro syncopation. Take your pick according to mood, they both do the job admirably.

Review: Cimedirapax's second EP is another action packed various artists affair that traverses the techno landscape taking no prisoners. Samuel Jabba's 'Mental Backflip' is a paranoid piece with dystopian darkness and eerie pads over the punchy breaks. Bakked's 'Titan' gets you up and on your toes thanks tot he taught drums then melts minds with is manic acid. Elias Sternin's 'Dance Gymnastics' goes for a more spaced out vibe with trippy alien effects. It's a retro-tinged cut with hefty bass weight. Rizzi & Lapucci then round things out with 'Vintage March', a slap-funk banger with more mind melting synth pulses and crispy drums.

Review: Yan Cook steps away from his Cooked label with another hefty offering of fulsome techno, this time on his other regular label, Delsin. As always with this man, this is powerful peak time techno with great functionality but also plenty of form. Tolling kicks and wall-rattling chords come together in various different ways as he gets dancing on the bumpy 'Buddy' before 'Lemur' brings more serene and dubby vibes. 'Mirror Maze' is a mind-altering affair and 'Gambler' then layer sup fat synth undulations with smooth drums and vast wet clasp. Lovely stuff.

Review: Massano is a British techno artist who shows of his wistful and emotive sound here on a new EP for Tale Of Us label Afterlife. First up is 'System' with its scintillating synth patterns unfolding over the brooding drums. He then tackles Oostil & Juan Hansen's 'Drown' and flips it into a deep, rolling late night cut with meditative chords. 'Odyssey' is a patient one that slowly unfolds with elegant synth phrases and distant pads to add the scale. Last of all is 'The Feeling' which has a grinding lead synth motif and more buoyant drums that lift you off your feet.

Review: 'Oxygen Levels Low' is the new EP from Colyn, and it's a strict lesson in sci-fi progressive house and trance, being the next to hit the experts of releasing in that style, Afterlife. Neo-electroclash abounds on the emotive 4x4 banger 'Wait For You', while robotic-heavenly broken beat slowly emerges on the strangely cinematic cuts 'K1427' and 'Lightyears'. Review: UK techno pioneer Steve Pickton (Stasis) comes to De:tuned! Records after having trawled his old DAT tapes and salvaged three odd tunes from the attic-bound pile. 'Of All The Worlds' and 'The Embrace' are playful analog jams in mono, emblematic of the kind of early rediscoveries that a time-honoured producers such as Stasis might make. A new remix by Nuron, in stereo, of 'The Embrace' nicely breaks up this retroization of Stasis' catalogue.

Review: We're Going Deep is run by Placid aka Paul Wise and it has roots that go back many, many years. The music it puts out remains at the very cutting edge though as this new one proves. It comes from D5, UK underground favourites, and here they offer up a trio of super stylish cuts of deep and sleek techno. 'RedAnalysis' is a bumping one with nice prickly percussion and trippy melodies, then 'BlackAnalysis' gets more soulful and smears Detroit synths over tightly bobbling kick drums. 'Noanalysis' closes out somewhere between the two with warm atmosphere and cool groove to spare.

Review: 'Connection' feels more direct in emotion than some of The Maghreban's early works, sonically encapsulating an up-close and personal feel that reflects the personal qualities of the artist (Ayman Rostom), and his East African and Middle Eastern roots, more than anything else. I was becoming more comfortable with connection whilst making it, rather than keeping to myself.More driven by drum-machine loops, and the cinematic mysteries one can fit around it, it's also got features from rapper Nah Eeto and singer Abdullah Miniawy, painting a smokey, dark and modal-jazzy picture of (a haunted) house.

It is a prime example of quality over quantity and here again with have another timeless, mind-melting release designed for whacked out dance floors at 5am. 'Home Time' is muscular, acid tinged, textured techno with a cosmic funk twist, while 'She Saw Me' surges on hammering drums and warped led synth lines. Review: Ninja Tune aren't the only wax shuriken-touting dance gesticulators on the block. Lumbago Records are their reissuing rivals; hailing from France, this anonymous pair focus on rereleasing long-lost dance cuts from the crates, new and old, compiling them into short EPs. Scratchy electro and breaks bits from EFX and Samix time travel all the way from 1991 ('Technique Amiga' sounds like it's lifted straight from an early Lara Croft soundtrack), and are reconciled with two tracks made in the last 5 years - and one bang in between from 2001, The Ruffneck's 'Phase Shift'. An impressive exercise in cross-generation reconciliation. Electro will never die!

He's already delivered two sublime albums (his debut solo set and one created in collaboration with Detroit legend Terrence Dixon) and here drops another must-check EP, his first for Rawax. 'Making Me Dizzy' sees the Amsterdam-based producer add gorgeously ambient lead lines, lilting TB-303 motifs and funky bass to a classic Motor City techno groove, with the accompanying 'Dub Mix providing a heavier, sweatier and more intoxicating alternative version. 'Tongue Twister' is jazzier and even more intergalactic, sitting somewhere between blissed-out Move D deep house and melodious techno. The dub that accompanies it is pleasingly deep, out there and effects-laden, escorting us even further into deep space. Tip!

Review: Given that he's been releasing long-players on the regular since the dawn of time (well, 2007), you'd expect Alexander Ridha AKA Boys Noize to know what makes a good album from an artist primarily known for the dancefloor-igniting nature of their work. He does, of course, as his latest album emphatically proves. With the help of a string of eye-opening guest vocalists and collaborators, Ridha deftly navigates between growling, mutilated, club-ready slabs of fuzzy post-electro and techno, and vocal and instrumental workouts that draw just as much inspiration from synth-pop and electro-disco. The results are uniformly inspired, with our current picks of a very strong bunch including Jake Shears hook-up 'All I Want', the breathlessly intense techno-jack of 'Xpress Yourself' and the tender, Chilly Gonzalez-voiced 'Ride or Die'

Review: While Daniel Avery's earlier LPs were deemed by the artist to be dissociative exercises - either working in dance or ambient escapism - his new album 'Ultra Truth' faces up fearlessly to life. Through mega washed out and blurred breaks and, it's the sonic expression of Avery "staring into the fire" of life, however dreamy and indistinct the experience of it may be, and living mindfully, completely in the body he finds himself housed in and controlling. Of course, dance music is embodied music, so we're more than blown away by this representation; Avery pulls it off by going in a direction we've not heard him move in before.

Review: The Furthur Electronix catalogue is one of the most faultless out there and now it gets another fine entry, this time from Tunik. He is an Argentinian artist based in Barcelona who has made big outings on cult labels like Nicholas Lutz's My Own Jupiter, Still a relative newcomer, his sound is well developed and rich inventions as this new mix of electro and techno proves. '16Bits Underwater' opens with crisp, snappy beats and coruscated acid lines, 'Untitled Break 3 (Bleepy mix)' has an old school feeling 'Elektro 02' is a dark and brain frying workout with superb drum programming before the closer wallows in a more introspective mood.
