Cat: BBE 543SLP. Rel: 03 Apr 19
  1. Happy Day (Classic main mix) (8:41)
  2. Happy Day (Classic dub mix) (6:37)
Review: Some four months after he lost his battle with cancer, BBE is releasing Paul 'Trouble' Anderson's final production - a fittingly joyous, upbeat and life-affirming cover of gospel standard "Happy Day" featuring the impassioned vocals of soul singer John Redmond. On the A-side of this 12" edition you'll find the "Classic Main Mix", a bouncy and rubbery fusion of soaring gospel vocals, bumping house beats, mazy organ solos, rubbery disco bass and clipped guitar riffs. It's superb all told, and a fitting final hurrah from one of the UK's most significant DJs of the past 40 years. Over on the flip you'll find the slightly more stripped-back "Classic Dub", where impassioned vocal snippets ride Anderson's killer groove, bouncy pianos and spacey synths.

Review: Arthur Baker is the perfect host for this new series from Demon Music which focuses on the famous extended remixes of the 80s. Each series will be a multi-disc, various artist collection that is united by one remixer, and there can be few better to kick it off than the legend that is Shep Pettibone. He was a hugely in demand studio hand who reworked multiple genres and everyone from Pet Shop Boys to Duran Duran, New Order to Level 42, George Michael to Erasure. This ambitious, widescreen collection takes in all manner of golden remixes from the world of soul, pop, synth and more.

  2. Forever Moving (6:46)
  3. Synchronicity (6:07)
  4. Electrogirl (6:02)
Review: Since making his debut in 2015, Chris Stussy has released a remarkable amount of music. Yet it's hard to fault any of his 22 previous EPs, which tend towards the chunkier, tech-tinged end of the deep house spectrum. His latest four-tracker is naturally full of top-notch cuts, too. Check first opener "Edge of the Mirror", where wonderfully melodic musical elements wrap themselves around a tough electronic deep house groove, before diving into the bass-heavy early morning hypnotism of "Forever Moving", which sounds like something you'd have heard at Twilo in New York circa 1996. "Synchronicity" is a string-drenched treat blessed with a fantastically rush-inducing breakdown, while "Electro Girl" is a fine fusion of tech-house electronics and oven-hot deep house grooves.

Review: Given his dedication to party-starting house and techno jams shot through with the warehouse-friendly sounds of the late '80s and early '90s, you'd expect this double-disc In The House mix from Unknown to the Unknown boss DJ Haus to be a riotous, energy-packed affair. It is, of course, with the experienced DJ/producer gleefully joining the dots between original rave-era fare and contemporary retro-futurist gems that pay tribute to piano house, early US garage, classic Italian house and Chicago jack. Both mixes bristle with ear-catching riffs, big builds and colossal drops, with highlights coming thick and fast. As a result, we'd argue that DJ Haus has delivered one of the best In The House mixes to date.

Cassandra (12")
Cat: CLAQUE 016. Rel: 14 Jul 15
  1. Cassandra (7:25)
  2. II (2:29)
Review: Donato Dozzy has surely booked his place at the top of the techno game by now, thanks to an impressive catalogue spanning over ten years and an exquisite selection of labels. Although he has been focusing on his collaborative projects over the last few years - check Voices From The Lake in case you've been living under a rock - his solo productions are always an absolute pleasure. For his latest outing he lands on compatriot Carola Pisaturo's Claque Musique, a label that floats between house and techno at its own pace. The A-side, "Cassandra", is more laid-back compared to Dozzy's recent performances, its mid-tempo swagger gives the percussion and floating melodies enough space to mould into a skin-tight groove. "II" on the B-side is totally different, where Dozzy eliminates beats, basslines and sonics in favour of Asia-sounding didgeridoo's, all electronically treated and tripped out, of course. Recommended, particularly for those wishing to hear something new from the man.

Review: Riding high on the buzz he has generated in the last twelve months, Max Graef delivers this album to Tartelet as a man very much in demand. His style, fuelled on the foundations of sampling funk and soul to a brilliantly modern end, has more space to breathe on this LP, but still the fundamentals remain. "Itzehoe" struts on a lazy jazzed-out sizzle of drums and beautiful Rhodes notes while "Tamboule Fudgefunk" punches its way through woozy synth work and a righteous beat and "Drums Of Death" struts on a perfect disco groove replete with live instrumentation, but there's a wealth of other tempos and styles all shot through with the homespun jazz charm that Graef has made his own of late.

  1. IV Anbus (7:20)
  2. Balut (7:34)
  3. Alpha Corvus (8:07)
Review: Markus Herbert is having a busy 2021. This is his third EP of the year, and the third EP to come exclusively on YYK no label, which is a daughter to the yoyaku imprint. It is another timeless fusion of spaced-out beats, prime 90s tech house and subtle minimalism that is designed for heady DJ sets. 'IV Anbus' is quick and slick, with its bouncing kicks and crunchy hits, then 'Balut' is a much more intriguing atmosphere with spiraling ambient pads and a more skeletal rhythm sinking you into a late-night headspace. 'Alpha Corvus' closes with a clatter of DIY percussive sounds, pixelated chord stabs and a sense of cyborg funk that you will not be able to resist.

Review: Thanks to his reputation as a knowledgeable house selector with immaculate mixing skills, hopes are high for Gerd Janson's contribution to Fabric's long-running mix series. As predicted, it's superb. After opening with Luke Abbot's deliciously steamy, marimba-heavy rework of Todd Terje sunset classic "Snooze 4 Love", the Running Back chief gradually ups the tempo and intensity, along the way finding time for the melodious breeziness of John Talabot, the stripped-back retro-futurism of Shan, a dash of big room business from Joy Orbison and Boddika, and a swathe of lesser-known house gems from the likes of Joe Clausell and Scott Grooves. He also squeezes in Prins Thomas's loose and summery rework of Caribou's "Sun", which closes the mix perfectly.

Review: Daje Funk Records is back with four new tracks on the Slam Dunk Vol. 2 EP. It features contributions from Jisco Dazz who serves up the low slung and rubbery groove of 'Change', BPlan continues on with more slo-mo kind tackle on the ultra deep 'Hey Boy', while the ever reliable G. Markus gets down to the disco inferno of 'Pocket Rocket'. For something a bit more streamlined to the dancefloor, Frank Virgilio also makes an appearance and he contributes the evocative deep house of 'What's In My Mind'.

Review: LADYMONIX invites us to take one last look at ourselves in the mirror, grab our phone, keys & wallet, and strut unapologetically out of the house and into her second EP. Created from her Detroit homebase but inherently inspried annd ruled by her mother city of Baltimore, this new record continues the dancer/DJ friendly formula of her debut release, giving us something to play at ever stage of the night out.

Review: French producer Laroye has s super slick production style that is showcased across this third volume of works on the If It Ain't Jazz label. Gilles Peterson has already approved the tunes here and for good reason: the a-side edit of 'Leaving This Planet' is an audacious one with powerful and modern drums layered in below the cosmic synth work and deeply buried vocal. Extra synths and new bass recorded by Aroop Roy finishes it in style. The b-side is 'Phantazia,' a more baseman styled disco jam with low sling bass and infectious loops that make you move, all finished off this time with a killer jazz-funk groove.

Review: Jump 'N' Funk started life as a small event in New York, organized by Rich Medina in order to pay tribute to the genius of Fela Kuti. Since then, parties have been held across the world, with Medina and guests showcasing music by, or inspired by, the Nigerian Afrobeat legend. This debut Jump N Funk compilation follows a similar formula, delivering both purist Afrobeat cuts (see Fela's punchy "Stalemate", and "Na Oil" by son Seun and his band, Egypt 80), and tracks in other styles that draw heavily on the style. Highlights in the latter category include the hazy Afro hip-hop of Aquil, a tasty Afro-house dub of River Ocean's cover of Timmy Thomas' classic "Why Can't We Live Together", and the lazy, sun-kissed glory of Kutiman's "Bango Fields".

Review: Noiro is clearly an artist with a lot of ideas and a desire to avoid conformity. SHAHRZAD, the producer's third EP of 2021 following outings on Chat Noir Tools and MINDHELMET, is an excellent collection of cuts, none of which sit neatly in any one style or sub-genre. Opener 'Kata Pulse', for example, adds Wurlitzer style organ slabs, scratched-in rap vocal samples and intergalactic, techno style electronics to skittish D&B beats and jazz-funk bass, while 'Aube Session' sounds like Rephlex-esque "brain-dance" mixed with hip-house. There are similarly entertaining examples of this kind of melodious, retro-futurist fusion elsewhere across the EP, including the New Jersey deep house goes psychedelic techno eccentricity of 'Show Me'.

  3. Background Flour (6:56)
  4. Southern Breeze (6:02)
Review: OGE is a leading outlet for lovers of white hot, white label minimal. They turn out the tunes at a decent rate of knots and on this third EP of the year the in house team once again impress. 'Weird Situation' is a nice smooth 90s tech house groove with subtle, balmy pads and crispy drums and snares. 'Calamaro's Face' has majestic bleeps and beeps and a super nice melodic baseline that takes you on a joyous ride. 'Background Flour' is jacked up and bumping with again with lush chords softening the edges and last of all 'Southern Breeze' is a lovely off-balance rhythm with silky chords, deft vocals and atmospheric vocals.

Review: Six brand new shakers from Omar S...This is the sh*t! Never confined to one particular genre, Omar is again blending house, techno and even minimal styles into one big pot of deep Detroit underground funk. There's even some Basic Channel / Deep Chord vibes going on there somewhere. Simply killer.

  1. Telephone (6:37)
  2. On My Mind (5:48)
  3. Cmm 2 U (5:45)
Review: If you like your deep house skipping between the dreamy heights of the astral plane and the grit of the city streets, then this low key drop on Paradise Pizza should be exactly what you're looking for. Kept deliberately ambiguous to let the music do the talking, this Italian crew deal once more in hazy soul and funk loops with unrelenting, rolling beats for true dancefloor transcendence. 'Telephone' is a standout cut with more than whiff of Moodymann in its dusty samples, while 'On My Mind' piles on some squidgy funk so satisfying you'll want to sink your teeth into it. Maintaining that giddy vibe, 'Cmm 2 U' finishes the EP off in a swirling, flute-licked reverie of disco delight.

  4. Recollection (4:06)
Review: Valencia's Pepe has built up quite a discography over the last few years, with this fine outing on Church following similarly impressive releases for Let's Play House, Lobster Theremin, Loose Fit and Sprung. The EP's impressive title track is available in two variations: the sparkling, breakbeat powered "Roll Mix" - think hip-house style drums, weighty dub bass and occasional dreamy chords - and a "Bleep Mix" that beefs up the sub-bass while adding some suitably sparse, computer game style electronic melodies. Another clear highlight is "You Must Not Be Me", a fine combination of rush-inducing, sunrise-ready electronics and bustling breaks, while closing cut "Recollection" is a rather lovely drift into opaque ambient territory.
