Review: Drew Lustman's longstanding FaltyDL moniker makes a welcome return with a debut full length record for the eminent Central Processing Unit label. In The Wake Of Wolves deconstructs Lustman's usual rough dance sound for a less predictable album-length breakdown, retaining his usual arid textures while playing up the more sound-designed and maximalist ends of his craft. In the pithy words of CPU: "This could pass for Four Tet or even Hannah Diamond at points, the steady build of pulsing synths and looped vocals recalling a more mysterious version of the PC Music sound." Whether you totally agree, you'd have to agree FaltyDL has at least taken on something of their contemporary future-pop/digisonic aesthetic and incorporated it into his own; this is most evident on the glassy pirouettes and gladiate complexities of 'Minds Protection', or the tenebrous post-punk descensions of 'New Friends', or many maximized IDM trap-doors and toolroom hard-clips of 'Workout'.

Ghost Phone 008
Cat: GHSTPHN 008. Rel: 14 Jun 24
Hologram (2:55)
Want U (3:03)
So Gone (4:35)
Darkness Finds Home With U (3:19)
Review: Ghost Phone has always been an intriguing label with a great aesthetic that pairs casper the friendly ghost with second-wave Nokia mobile phones, suggesting it is inspired by the late 90s and early 00s. The sounds testify to that too - often drawing n the UK hardcore continuum, bass and garage with their skeletal rhythms and shimmering pads. Pitched-up r&b vocals on "Want U' make it a real standout while opener 'Hologram' is more about shifting tones and eerie moods. 'So Gone' brings dusty jungle breaks as heard second-hand down the phone and 'Darkness Finds Home With U' closes out with yet another idiosyncratic yet familiar sound.

4L (4:32)
Review: Max Graef emerged with a dusty, lo-fi and lived-in house sound that soon made him a favourite amongst the underground heads of the early 2010s. In the years since he has dropped plenty of fine tunes and a great full-length and has seemingly been working on his skills and musicality because this new full-length is a real step up in quality. It comes as always on his home label Tartelet and mixes up some lush downtempo sounds with deep house bits, Balearic moments and plenty of soulful charm.

Nope (limited 7" in screen-printed sleeve)
Cat: ZAMZAM 95. Rel: 03 Jun 24
Nope (feat Ras Lys) (4:16)
Abbadia (4:12)
Review: ZamZam is hurtling towards its milestone 100th release but first it turns to enigmatic French producer Hiss Is Bliss. Both sides of this new 12" aim squarely at the dancefloor. 'Nope' opens up as a perfect dub techno exploration with driving 808 kicks and synth swirls that paint cosmic colours in the space above. Ras Lys' vocal adds a hint of dread while the B-side cut 'Abbadia' is stripped right back to the bare bones and still makes a mark. The pads are distorted as the shimmer above the rhythm and lock you into a mindful state. This one has been limited to just 800 copies so do not sleep.

Metro Shake Whispers (4:45)
Review: Upsammy's 2023 stonker Germ In A Population Of Buildings now comes to vinyl via PAN. Continuing in one very particular aspect of the Amsterdam musician's craft - her interest in architecture and environmental design, and how that plays into and informs on sound - this LP evinces ideas of a rewilded modernist edifice, avoiding static textures in favour of a 'constantly shifting' sound. An IDM record teeming with electroacoustic textures, all of which sound "alive" - wood, brick, steel, ceramic, concrete, you name the building material - it seems that Upsammy's intent is to physically model almost every possible foley impact on the planet and arrange it into a single whimsical symphony. A digital audiophile's dream.

Review: London producer Vegyn lays down a fresh cassette reissue of his early cut Text While Driving If You Want To Meet God!, throwing back to simpler days of BPM-tagged beatmaking and heartbreaking. Coming fresh after the producer found lasting fame as Frank Ocean's trusty go-to, Vegyn broke all the rules with this one, digitally offering up over 70 short mix-ready electronic cuts. All the bits on the record played duly by the rules of lo-fi beatmaking that populated the online world at the time - trap production hallmarks and producer tags ("did I ever tell you that I'm Vegyn?") aplenty - yet also did something to transcend them, with the artist's establishing style predominantly revolving around extra-organic textures, skittery humanised drums, and detuned synths. The new cassette edition already serves to nostalgise the record, reflecting just how fast herbivore has moved.
