  1. Screwface (5:07)
  2. Jungle Love (4:58)
  3. Champion Of Champions (4:43)
  4. Bonus Beat #1 (5:02)
Review: Seminal business from 1994, Kemet dust off the original "Borderline" EP which comprised the names Brain Killers and Family Of Intelligence but was all the engineering work of DJ Lewi. The man behind so many sounds on Kemet during their most pioneering years, his touch is on all of these cuts... The still-pristine and quintessential rave anthem "Screwface", the raw drum funk and breakcraft of "Jungle Love", the big raw ragga chat of "Champion Of Champions" and the chaos of "Bonus Beat #1". Lewi we salute you.

4625 002 (12")
Cat: 4625 002. Rel: 15 May 19
  1. Sedition (6:32)
  2. Crown Of Nails (6:26)
Review: One year later, UVB-76's shadowy collective 4 6 2 5 strike again with two more unique startling schematics. Flexing across the tempo axis, "Sedition" leads with a fast 170 twist as hard pneumatic kicks cut through the dense foggy atmospherics before doubling up the momentum and taking unpredictable twists midway. "Crown Of Nails" maintains the hunchback pressure and that heavy foreboding sense synonymous with each member of the collective, but does so at a cool 105BPM pace giving space for each percussive element to ricochet around your purdy little pranged-out soul.

  1. No Era (7:09)
  2. No Era (Alex Jann Planet Transmit mix) (5:36)
  3. No Era (Secret Universe Biosphere mix) (5:58)
Review: Adam Shelton returns to his breaks/electro alias A-Future once again with "No Era". Taking off where the launch release "Cybernetic" left us, it's another tense rolling jam that nods back to the very foundations but with added 2020 production punch. Think Tim Wright jamming with Ed DMX and you're on the right path. Remix-wise Alex Jann lays down a pacier, more layered set of rhythm logistics while mysterious alias Secret Universe closes with an authentic jungle reversion, imagine Tim Reaper in a chilled mode and you're on the right star-path.

Fours EP (12")
Cat: SAB 012. Rel: 24 Mar 20
  1. Arctic (feat Mc Fats) (7:34)
  2. Follower (6:24)
  3. Need (5:00)
  4. Conscious Dub (5:55)
Review: A Sides and Sun And Bass go together like gin and tonic. The perfect, long-standing tradition between an OG and the true mother of D&B gatherings, once again their connection levels up with this crucial quartet. "Arctic" (with Fats, another certy SAB soldier) hits the spot instantly. Sweeping, emotional and super soulful, it's yet another precision collab from the pair. Deeper into the wax we hit dubby rolling gold on "Follower", get bouncy in the jazzy depths of "Need" and get torn to pieces on the moody halftime steps and warps of "Conscious Dub". High grade as always from all concerned.

Apocalypse (12")

  1. Apocalypse (7:18)
  2. Eastern Spirit (5:48)
Review: Teased with a few cheeky copies at Clashmouth last year, these two unreleased puppies from Adam F's kennel finally get fully let off the leash. "Apocalypse" has a Twin Peaks / "Go" flavour to its chords and eerie feel while "Eastern Spirit" has more of a hardcore feel to it thanks to its stripped back breakbeat nature and iconic psychedelic vocal sample that peppered raves throughout the early 90s. Delivered on J Majik's Infrared, it's another precision excavation from the very source.

  3. Lion Awakes (5:26)
  4. Babylon (6:07)
Review: Crucial power jams from longstanding Finnish duo on thriving Finnish jungle imprint, Aeon Four are a perfect fit on Straight Up Breakbeat. Four cuts in total, each one explores a different side of the spectrum. Opener "Silence" praises the rave and the hardcore elements, "Essence" smacks of that authentic Goodlooking feel with its pads while "Lion Awakes" takes a well known vocal for a classic jungle feel. Last but not least "Babylon" closes with the ruffest card of the hand as happy slapping breaks keep us running to the very edge.

  3. Affliktion - "Sunday Atmosphere" (4:29)
  4. Dreamlogicc - "March Liquid" (6:12)
  5. Dreamlogicc - "Clique On" (6:47)
Review: Sub Terrain One is the first in a series of split EPs featuring high tempo bass music by ffliktion & dreamlogicc. Three cuts from ffliktion on the A side pair classic jungle breaks with hazy atmospherics and weighty basslines. Two cuts from dreamlogicc on the B side touch on hypnotic trance progressions with deep spacey textures.

  4. Hyroglifics & Visages - "Searching" (4:19)
Review: Some 15 months after the first multi-artist "Folio" EP landed in stores, 1985 Music has dropped a sequel. It's another all-action affair, with all four cuts hitting home hard. Label founder Alix Perez kicks things off with "White Lies", a minimalist roller where metallic percussion hits and evocative soul vocals rise above a thoroughly filthy, wobble-powered bassline. Label favourites Submarine step up with sub-heavy hot-stepper "Grunge", before Scepticz and Lavance take things up a notch or two via the industrial strength distorted bass, mind-altering electronics and punchy beats of "Flatline". To round things off, Hyroglifics and Visages get together on the skewed but energy-packed creepiness of "Searching".

Points In Time (clear marbled vinyl 10")
Cat: AMAR 015. Rel: 28 Jan 20
  1. Points In Time (4:57)
  2. Wake Dub (4:09)
Review: Amar superstar Amit crashes into a new decade with two outstanding bruisers. "Points In Time" follows the hair-raising brute-force damage he's caused recently on Metalheadz and 31; punished steppy beats, deadline-style tones on the riff and a bassline that will eat you alive. "Wake Dub" on the B flips the vibe to Amit's classic dubwise halftime roots with hypnotic melodica blasts and tidal cymbal splashes. Savagely on-point as always.

Review: Samurai slice into 2020 with all the precision and energy their name promises. This time the man holding the blade is Manchester's Antagonist who follows up his appearance on the label's 10th anniversary album in 2018 with this deadly debut 12". Title track "Shui" is a militant beast with thundering drums doing all the negotiating while "Escapism" is more of a layered affair with heavy atmospheres and lighting breakbeat flurries. Both hit the spot in the best way possible. Welcome to a new decade.

Cat: I&I 002. Rel: 24 Jan 20
  1. Jinja (4:52)
  2. Echo Park (6:09)
Review: Made using field recordings captured by Archiver on a trip to Japan in 2015, i&i Musik 002 is a two track Jungle release with layered breaks, 808 basslines & chopped up samples. "Jinja" meaning shrine in Japanese, uses recordings taken in & around the sacred Koyasan temple complex in Japan. A deep 808 sub bass backbone & classic breaks have been added to complete the picture on this unique amen roller. On the flip side, "Echo Park" combines snippets from a walk around Shinjuku Gyoen park in Tokyo, with it's echoed announcements & footstep sounds, together with recordings taken from some of Wakayama's temples & shrines. Layered classic breaks & an 808 bassline complete this distinctive track. Written & produced by Archiver & mastered by Loz at Fat As Funk. Individually lathe cut by Archiver & released as a limited edition run of 55 hand stamped & hand numbered 10" dubplates. An exclusively vinyl only affair, with no digital release. Design & artwork by Risa.

  1. Degrees Of Separation (4:54)
  2. Missing Piece (4:29)
  3. Tannan (4:34)
  4. Street Scenes (3:47)
Review: According to Integral head honchos Artificial Intelligence, their latest EP "comprises four exhilarating episodes that will take you on an exhilarating journey". It is, then, a box set of sorts: a short season of all-action cuts designed to entertain from start to finish. They fittingly begin with something suitably filmic - the sweeping cinematic movements, head-in-the-clouds atmospherics, punchy beats and sumptuous vocals of "Degrees of Separation", before fusing elements of soul and neo-classic on superb liquid roller "Missing Piece". The experienced duo cleverly ratchet up the tension on the creepy, heavy and intense B-side opener "Tannan", before reaching a triumphant conclusion via the smooth and life-affirming brilliance of "Street Scense".

  4. Impact Proxy (4:57)
Review: Artilect returns to Samurai with more of his top tier silver blade business. Four tracks, each one as glacial as the last, we kick off with "In My Dark", a foreboding skittering track that scuttles like a venomous spider on ice. Three more forefront fires are lit in its wake: the running tribal tension of the title track "Rhythm Seeker", the savage-but-spacious mid 90s Dillinja headnod that is "Mefo" and the stark drumfunk finale "Impact Proxy". Each one tailored for 3am and onwards. Each one guaranteed to knock your dancefloor sideways, Artilect has cooked up some proper heavy tucker here.

Review: For his first release of 2020 ASC pays homage to mother nature's strongest push-me-pull-you - the "Zenith & Nadir" of the universe... And he does so in the form of a score to a movie that's yet to be made. A smouldering slo-mo analogue weave of synths and drum machines; from the synth-wave subtle triumph of "Anthe" to the unnerving, skin-rippling intro "Cryogenic" to the melancholy finale "The Milankovitch Cycles", he provides the sounds - you create the pictures.

Clear Skies (12" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: AUXWL 004. Rel: 11 Dec 19
  1. Clear Skies (12:26)
  2. Nimbus (7:49)
Review: Fresh from offering up an IDM, techno and electronica informed album - the must-check "Realm Of The Void" - James Clements AKA ASC returns to the dancefloor via a two-track missive of deliciously dreamy drum and bass futurism. Side A boasts "Clear Skies", a deep, sunrise-ready roller full of punchy jungle breakbeats, ambient chords, Good Looking Records style picturesque electronics and melodies so warm and positive you might want to take them home to meet your parents. If anything, flipside "Nimbus" is even deeper and dreamier. Clements builds suspense via an elongated ambient intro before introducing snare-heavy early D&B drums, rich bass and some suitably sunrise-ready melodies.

  4. Time & Space (4:31)
Review: Having built up a considerable empire with his Lobster Theremin labels, Jimmy Asquith has been increasingly focusing on his own productions via a self-titled label and now this surefooted appearance on the mighty Hypercolour. "Take Anymore" is a rugged garage burner with nasty, dirty drums and a nagging chord line, cheeky false-ending edits and plenty more besides. "And Go" is a gutsy fist-shaker with brittle percussion geared towards the hard-jacking DJs, while "System (Power Mix)" interprets the deep house template with a particularly spicy take. "Time & Space" flips things up once more with some wild and wobbly jungle, confirming Asquith's skill at all forms of rowdy and raw dance music.

Review: The mysterious Bakground returns to Lobster Theremin and he's rolling with esteemed company as Sangam adds his deep threads to the weave. "90s Living" lives up to its name; big immersive atmospheric jungle, all loose around the edges but held together so firmly. "Intermission" provides no respite - the only break is the one that rolls beneath the shimmering keys. Review: With a title like "When I Drop Dem Bass", you'd expect this single from Bazooka to doff a cap to the early years of jungle culture, and specifically the ragga-fired, soundsystem-busting records on which the scene was built. That's exactly what you get, with veteran mic men Daddy Freddy and Ken Boothe adding rapped and sung vocals to a punchy backing track rich in Amen breaks, powerful bass and reggae style piano stabs. The retro-futurist fun continues on side B, where a stabbing, mind-altering melody and dub-wise sounds rise above a suitably filthy rhythm track and pulverizing wobble bass.

  6. More Than Words (feat Charlotte Haining - Seba remix) (5:59)
Review: As the matter-of-fact title makes clear, this expansive EP offers up freshly remixed versions of tracks from Bcee's fine 2017 album Northpoint. LSB is first up to the plate, offering up a wonderfully warm and summery take on soulful roller "Surfacing" that's marked out by suitably loved-up build-ups and breakdowns, before Anile wraps fluid piano lines around a punchy rhythm on a beautifully judged revision of "Northpoint". Bladerunner provides a dose of doom-laden bass and cyber-sonic synths on a rip-snorting revision of "Your Body", while Lenzman's take on "Black Sky" is a soulful, liquid D&B delight. Elsewhere, Monty reaches for the heavy sub-bass and aggressive neuro-funk electronics on his remix of "Had It All" and Seba brings the curtain down via an anthem-like vocal take on "More Than Words".

It's backed up by the tougher charms of "Protected Secrets", complete with DRS on assist. Elsewhere we're taken even deeper into B&B's collaborative universe on the moody creeper "Perfect World", Lucy Kitchen joins the fray on the sunset-style "Drawn The Line" before "Rose Coloured Stained Glass Windows" closes the EP on a poignant cosmic skippy tip. Spacey, spacious and sprinkled with heavy atmospheres, both cuts hit with his signature timeless charm; "Ellen" hits with big jazzy showers and that floaty, Good Looking cosmic funk to it while "Decompression" hits with darker notes as the beats roll out a little more persistently and the pads add a little emotional pressure. This time the captain Liondub takes to the controls himself alongside fellow US jungle veteran Jah Boogs while vocal guidance comes from one of the most distinctive MCs in the game: Bristol's Blackout Ja. Here we find him in fiery form as "Touch Up The Key" brocks out in all directions over a precision-tuned subby bass wobble. It's a hard hitting melange of big drum breaks, spoken word snippets and barrelling drums that is fun and high impact jungle of the highest order. "Murderin' M.C." is a darker tune with a rumbling bassline and shooting lasers synths that bring a more electronic and futurist feel, but still designed for club destruction. 1. Mr Parkers Voice (feat Rhyming In Fives) (7:04)
  2. Drum Machine (5:22)
Review: The Narratives lads Blocks & Escher are back spinning another fine yarn, and you'd be wise to pay attention. "Mr Parkers Voice" sees them teaming up with old friend, the somewhat elusive Rhyming In Fives. So simple in its elements yet so soulfully effective, everything is in the chord progression and space and sporadic elements. Pure future. For something with just a smidgeon of past jump on "Drum Machine". A grizzled techstep damager, there's a strong Trace and DCi4 vibe deep in the evil mix here. These guys seriously never fail.

  1. Got A Feelin' (4:31)
  2. Sesame Seeds (5:23)
Review: Symmetry bossman and all-round don Break barges into 2020 with his first fresh produce of the decade and it's not a moment too soon. "Got A Feelin'" weighs in on the groany sewer sounds that are still characterising the genre right now, but done in a subversive, gritty funk way that's unique to him. Flip for some serious sample schooling. Returning to the source of one of jungle's most well-favoured breaks (the clue's in the title) and making new edits using different parts of the record, it's a true breakbeat odyssey with all the subs and detuned stabs a classic jungle hat-tip could ever wish for. Break it down.
