Synthetic Substitution (7" repress) (1 per customer)
Cat: BAB 001. Rel: 11 Dec 17
  1. Melvin Bliss - "Syntheic Substitution" (extended Break edit) (3:50)
  2. Sweet Daddy Floyd - "I Just Can't Help Myself" (extended Break edit) (4:17)
Review: This tasty, DJ-friendly 7" single boasts two extended, break-heavy reworks of obscure and in-demand soul workouts. On the A-side you'll find a tasty extension of Melvin Bliss's superb, piano-heavy 1983 cut "Synthetic Substitution". While Bliss's brilliant original - all heartfelt vocals, jaunty keys and warm bass - is largely kept in tact, the mystery re-editor naturally makes more of the opening breakbeat, which was sampled several times during hip-hop's "golden era". Flip for a similarly tasty rearrangement of Sweet Daddy Floyd's 1978 Blaxploitation style disco-funk shuffler "I Just Can't Help Myself", a cut rich in rolling breaks, densely layered percussion, punchy orchestration and "Shaft"-style guitar licks.

Know What You Want (7" + poster)
Cat: MEL 8. Rel: 11 Dec 17
  1. Know What You Want (4:47)
  2. I'm Gonna Make It (2:58)
Review: So far, Floating Points' reissue-focused Melodies International label has barely put a foot wrong. As you'd expect given his crate-digging credentials, each chosen release has not only been obscure or hard to find, but also exceptionally good. Predictably, this one is, too. Gloria Jay's 1977 single "Know What You Want" is a heartfelt chunk of saccharine soul featuring some particularly good jazz-funk style solos. Speaking of jazz-funk, this influence comes through further on the slightly more disco-minded, dancefloor-friendly flipside, "I'm Gonna Make It", whose jangling piano riffs and goodtime groove are almost impossible to resist. As ever with Melodies International, the packaging - which includes a foldout poster tucked into the sleeve - is also superb.

  1. Lazarus (6:38)
  2. Mostly You (5:28)
  3. Flamboyant (6:53)
Review: Long-time Amsterdam selector and digger Ouvrijster goes legit on Sleazy Beats Black Ops new label Make Believe Disco with three immaculate slices of glitterball deep house. "Lazarus" is a sprightly piece of Farina-level jazzy magic with persistent keys and subtle dub effects, "Mostly You" ups the jack factor with layers of hypnotic rippling washes and "Flamboyant" dims the lights with a sultry, loopy groove and the perfect balance of cosmic flare. Stunning.

Cat: DISCOHAMAM 03. Rel: 11 Dec 17
  1. Ozerbey - "Mihrimah" (Erguder Abi Ozur Dilerim edit) (4:47)
  2. FOC Edits - "Demdir Dem Bu Dem" (4:18)
  3. FOC Edits - "Neredesin" (4:49)
Review: The masters of the Turkish disco edit are back! This time round, you'll find two previously unheralded rework merchants at the controls. Ozerbey handles the A-side, delivering a wonderfully evocative, hypnotic and occasional chugging re-edit of an obscure Turkish disco treat full of sweeping strings, crunchy Clavinet lines and clipped, Nile Rodgers style guitars. On the B-side, you'll find two superb cut-and-splice jobs from Turkish cosmic disco specialist FOC Edits. First he serves up the meandering Persian electric piano solos, mazy synthesizer lines and low-slung grooves of "Demdir Dem Bu Dem", before playing around with percussion on the denser, rolling late night sleaze of EP highlight "Neredesign". The track's combination of killer disco drum breaks and half sung/half-spoken vocals is particularly alluring.

  1. Messages From The Stars (Long Wave mix) (6:43)
  2. Messages From The Stars (Astro mix) (6:28)
  3. Messages From The Stars (Short Wave mix) (3:59)
Review: Amongst synthesizer fetishists and electro-funk enthusiasts, Rah Band's "Messages From The Stars" has long been a cherished record. It's also a rather unusual one; a British-made electro era record that combines the kind of cutting-edge electronic instrumentation and production techniques more frequently found on contemporaneous New York records (copious amounts of delay, extensive TR-808 and Linn drum use, and so on) with the eccentricity of post-punk era UK synth-pop. This reissue presents re-mastered versions of Hewson's three original versions, of which the trippy and extended "Long Wave Mix" and more percussive, delay-laden "Astro Mix" (effectively the club-focused dub) are the standouts. If you don't already own a copy, get this quick.

  1. Here's To You (part 1 - Kadena Multi track version) (4:25)
  2. Here's To You (part 2 - Kadena Multi track version) (4:40)
Review: Galaxy Sound return to the classics with this prime slice of 1980 disco funk from NYC troupe Skyy. The lead track on their second Salsoul album Skyyport, everything about "Here's To You" glistens and struts; the slinky keys, the lolloping, walloping walking basslines and the sweet-shuffled double-clapping drum arrangement. Both parts re-purposed, remastered and rebuilt by Kadena, all the original elements are brought to life without losing any of their original funk elements.

  1. Don't You Know I Love You (part 1) (2:59)
  2. Don't You Know I Love You (part 2) (2:36)
Review: Georgia troupe Star Quake gave the world just one record... And boy is it special. Slick pumping disco funk with focus, momentum and shimmering chimes on the chords as the track climaxes, there's an air of Stevie to the vocals and unashamed funk throughout. So good it comes in two parts, there's a reason original copies of this have passed hands for almost $2000 in the past.

  6. Colin Wilson Said (2:00)
Review: The Vendetta Suite is Belfast's Gary Irwin. His first solo release since 2012 features six tracks all handpicked by Hell Yeah boss Marco from vast unreleased vaults. Irwin was the in house engineer for the legendary UK producer David Holmes' Exploding Plastic Inevitable studio. Tracks from the artist such as "Hula Bop" became classic staples in Marco's sets as Balearic Gabba Soundsystem, so he recently reached out to the Newtownards man and worded him up via Soundcloud. And here we have it - a cinematic EP that draws on a myriad musical styles and showcases Irwin's peerless studio skills. There's some variety on here, that's for sure: from the cosmic balearic trip that is "Sirius", the cheeky Madchester sounding acid dub of "Shut Up Ya Dub!" or the sublime ambient journey of "Colin Wilson Said" which is the perfect soundtrack to a comedown.

Review: Under the Junior Mendes alias, Luiz Mendes Jr was a key figure on the Brazilian funk/soul scene of the '70s and early '80s. As writer, composer and producer, he had a hand in a variety of releases by such big-hitting Brazilian artists as Banda Black Rio and Tim Maia. In 1982 he recorded and released his sole solo album, Cococabana Sadia, a set that remains virtually unknown outside of his native Brazil. As this Athens of the North reissue proves, it's something of an overlooked gem. Musically, it's typically of boogie-era Brazilian soul and funk, mixing native rhythms and instrumentation with elements borrowed from disco, jazz-funk and bouncy dancefloor soul. It's unashamedly sunny and positive, too, and should be essential listening for anyone who loves Latin disco and boogie.

Review: Massive in Memphis but criminally under-known elsewhere, Lee Moore's work behind the scenes with a cornucopia of Stax talents lasted over a decade and saw him develop a variety of alter-egos and side projects on Score and LM Records. Here Past Due bring together his finest and most rare, all re-imagined and remastered across five stacked 12"s. From the Chic-level disco momentum of his First Family affairs, the synthetic experimental sounds of Alien to the sprightly p-funk odysseys under his own name and the 80s electro boogie of Le Gamby, Moore's party portfolio is about to be celebrated and respected in the way it always should have been. Trust us, this is the heaviest gram you'll ever buy.

Review: As an album title, In Case You Don't Know What To Play is rather good. We suspect that Damiano von Erckert had his tongue firmly pressed against the inside of his cheek when he came up with it, but it somehow seems fitting. You see, the album - the producer's third solo full-length excursion - contains a range of quirky, off-kilter, sample-heavy cuts that suit a variety of moods and situations. While his roots are in groovy and off-kilter deep house, the album's 10 tracks cheekily touch on a myriad of styles and sounds, from wonky Afro-house, broken beat and Balearic disco, to stomping, Terrence Parker style piano anthems and stripped-back jazz-house.
