Dance On The Beat (reissue) (limited hand-numbered 12" repress)
Cat: PM 121701BLACK. Rel: 14 Mar 19
  1. Dance On The Beat (4:25)
  2. Dance On The Beat (instrumental) (4:24)
Review: Ready for take off? Curious Italo disco gem from lesser spotted alias Boeing in 1982 enjoys a cheeky reissue and you'd be wise to fasten your seatbelts. Sprightly, funky and characterised by a classic, slightly trippy voice-of-god spoken word, cute synth squiggles and a rolling percussive layer that's almost too addictive. Comes complete with an instrumental if the vocal commands are just a little too much for you. Hurry, there's only 500 copies before they fly away for good!

Tam Tam Remixes (12" + insert)
Cat: DE 245. Rel: 11 Mar 19
  1. Tam Tam (Daniele Baldelli & Marco Dionigi remix A) (4:40)
  2. Tam Tam (Daniele Baldelli & Marco Dionigi remix B) (4:40)
  3. Tam Tam (Whatever/Whatever remix) (7:13)
  4. Tam Tam (Whatever/Whatever extended edit) (5:30)
Review: Many should already know Codek's "Tam Tam" (sometimes known as "Tim Toum"), a peerless Afro-cosmic classic from 1981 that fused minimalist tribal drums with spaced-out female vocals and sparse, intergalactic electronics. Here it gets the remix treatment for the very first time. Fittingly, it's cosmic disco stalwarts Daniele Baldelli and Marco Dionigi who kick things off with two tasty interpretations: a percussive and hypnotic take that successfully throws some acid-funk guitars into the mix ("Remix A"), and a more spacey, synth-laden affair rich in analogue electronics ("Remix B"). Over on side B, New York duo Whatever/Whatever re-imagine it as a fuzzy slab of coldwave/house fusion, before offering up an extended, club-ready re-edit of the original version.

Think (About It) (hand-stamped 7")
Cat: BIKE 019. Rel: 12 Mar 19
  1. Think (About It) (4:13)
  2. Hot Hands (4:06)
Review: It's been a while since Eddie C last donned his riding gloves and polished his helmet, the best part of a year in fact, but here he is cruising fashionably late into the year with his first release of 2019; "Think (About It)" celebrates the surging 80s soul and production finesse of Rockie Robbins while the B-side nudges us gently towards much balmier climes with undulating twists and turns of Balearic-meets-Latin funk by way of Earl Klugh's "Hot Hands". And he's not talking about the riding gloves...

  1. Spanish Hustle (Special Disco version) (5:54)
  2. Spanish Hustle (album version) (5:15)
  3. Spanish Hustle (Joey Negro remix) (6:15)
  4. Spanish Hustle (Joey Negro beats) (5:20)
Review: One of the Fatback Band's most celebrated cuts gets the reissue treatment. The A-side is dedicated to the band's two "original" versions from 1975, with the hard to find, previously promo only "Special Disco" mix - a wonderfully percussive, low-slung affair guaranteed to create pandemonium on dancefloors - being accompanied by the breezier, solo-heavy album version. On side B, there's a chance to savour Joey Negro's brilliant remix from a couple of years back, a ground-up, multi-track re-build that sees the veteran disco and house producer make merry with the band's sweaty percussion and hot-to-trot instrument solos. There's also a brilliant bonus in the shape of a "Beats" style mixing tool in which the Z Records founder brilliantly layers up heavy disco drums and head-mangling Latin style percussion.

Invisible Escape EP (12" repress) (1 per customer)
Cat: PHI 07RE. Rel: 11 Mar 19
  1. L'Uomo Invisibile (6:54)
  2. Camel Ride (3:56)
  3. Far Away (2:03)
  4. Journey Unknown (6:27)
  5. Daydreams (6:20)
Review: Lexx and company's Phantom Island imprint has yet to release a duff 12" since springing up back in 2014. Their latest limited edition EP marks the debut of Fuga Ronto, a project birthed by two of the label's four co-founders, Ron Shiller (he of Drumpoet Community fame) and DJ Foster (AKA Tobias Schweizer). Predictably, the five tracks on offer are woozy, Balearic affairs that draw influence from the more humid, horizontal and new age-influenced end of 1980s European synth-pop. Some may draw comparisons with Franco-Belgian outfit Antena (they of "Camino Del Sol" fame), while others will point to Dunkelziffer as a clear inspiration. Whatever the various influences, the Invisible Escape EP is stunningly beautiful and exquisitely produced.

  3. Of Rainbows (5:37)
  4. Your Mind (6:16)
Review: Masterworks Music are back on wax, with Italian stallion Gledd (Whiskey Disco/Nomada Records/Rose Records) in charge of the disco funk. "Soul Shapes" goes for the dancefloor jugular with all four cuts designed to get you up and grooving. Kicking off with the classic U.S. vibe of "Light Of Florence", the bass-driven soul power of "I Just Want You" and finishing with the smokin' late night sexiness of "Your Mind" which is surefire for the dancefloor and destined to get y'all stoned into the groove.

Confrontation (limited 7" repress)
Cat: ATH 019. Rel: 13 Mar 19
  1. Confrontation (3:46)
  2. You & Me Babe (4:20)
Review: The Athens of the North label is a blessing for those whose tastes in soul, funk, disco and boogie tend towards the obscure and ludicrously hard-to-find. Their latest re-issue fits into both categories. Seemingly the only single they ever released, "Confrontation" came out in 1981 on Arista but copies have since proved incredibly hard to find; so hard, in fact, that original 7" singles now change hands online for nearly L300. The title track, produced by A Taste of Honey's Perry Kibble, is brilliant, though, delivering a soulful, heartfelt disco-funk jam full of smooth backing vocals, bubbling clavinet lines and deliciously righteous horns.

  2. Doin' It (6:04)
  3. Dude Piano (6:14)
  4. Ahmed Love (6:10)
Review: Fire in the hole! The legendary Les Inferno returns on tasty Roman funk empire Samosa with four more salubrious shakedowns. "Making Me Sweat" lives up to its name with its tightly coiled guitar/horn looping chuggery before "Doin' It" brings in the sleaze by the dollop. Flip for the conga-led ivory burning romp "Dude Piano" before we get all sandy-toed and Balearic on the subverted glass of ice cold OJ that is "Ahmed Love". Feel the heat.

  1. Movin' On A Groove (3:18)
  2. Disco Music (3:33)
Review: **REPRESS ALERT** Barbara Lynn (b. 1942) is an American rhythm and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter best known for her 1962 R&B chart-topping hit, "You'll Lose a Good Thing". Her highly sought after 1976 song "Movin' On A Groove" gets a much needed repress here from London's Soul Brother, with the funky "Disco Music" featured on the flip. The title track is a soul anthem for those who know, and it's been sold for extortionate prices on the second-hand market but thanks to Soul Brother you can finally get a copy for a reasonable price! A very strong 45 release for DJs and collectors alike.

  3. Depth Gauge (5:29)
  4. Depth Gauge (Lokier remix) (5:15)
Review: This fine EP marks a welcome return to action for Thomas Clarke AKA MR TC, a graduate of Glasgow's celebrated Green Door Studio who has previously delivered a string of killer singles on Optimo Music. Side A is all about the psychedelic disco exoticism of "Gay Haze", a throbbing, Arabic-influenced affair that's given an even-more mind-altering makeover by Khidja. Turn to the flip for the dreamy, synthesizer-heavy mid-tempo chug of "Depth Gauge". This, too, gets the remix treatment, with Lokier offering a radical re-interpretation built around a seriously sleazy and druggy arpeggio style bassline.

  1. Alisha All Night Passion (edit) (7:38)
  2. Company B Fascinated (edit) (8:14)
  3. Sleeper In The Metropolis (edit) (6:31)
  4. Deee-Lite What Is Love (edit) (5:27)
Review: This new edit series is the work of Nocturne label bass Jordan McCuaig, a producer best-known for releasing solid EPs of original music on Made Fresh Daily, Twin Turbo, Loose Fit and Extended Play. It's a pretty hot collection of cuts, all told. McCuaig begins by brilliantly chopping up Alisha's NYC freestyle jam "All Night Passion", before popping a pill, whipping off his shirt and bounding through a version of Company B's throbbing "Fascinated". Over on side B, Anne Clark's wavy, freestyle-era anthem "Sleeper In The Metropolis" gets chopped and looped, while Deee-Lite's sleazy and sometimes overlooked "What Is Love" is rearranged to add extra impetus to the track's famous organ riffs.

  1. Jazz Dancin' (4:26)
  2. Jazz Funkin' (4:48)
Review: Super Disco Edits add more fire to their Grand Union series with two never-before-released brit funk cuts recorded in Birmingham in 1980. One four-hour session, and nary a rehearsal beforehand, this is the sound of a young Midlands four piece just jamming and pulling the vibe together effortlessly. Vocals on "Jazz Dancin'" come courtesy of Jaki Graham, who was previously in the Paul Hardcastle produced act Kiss The Sky. With her late entering vocals and that sublime flute line, it's criminal this release never saw the light of day at the time.

Gem Picker EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DFV 010. Rel: 11 Mar 19
  1. Make It Last Forever (6:56)
  2. Get Loose (7:46)
  3. Gem Picker (6:20)
  4. Rough (6:33)
Review: Disco Fruit head honcho Tonbe returns to his own label with more of the addictive, feel-good vibes he's become so well known for. "Make It Last Forever" is a string laden, emotionally charged shuffler with sweet vocals that sound like they could belong to house titan Robert Owens. "Get Loose" places the emphasis on a cheeky piano line that will have you strutting and finger waving with abandon, while "Gem Picker" gets deep on the choppy drums and smooth jazz samples. "Rough" is a seriously funky number, oozing warmth and soul to set your party off in all the right ways.

Albums
  1. Ukhiokhio (8:28)
  2. Omoto (8:52)
  3. Iyereghe (8:54)
  4. Enothiomwani (8:32)
Review: The second salvo from "forgotten music" specialists Dig This Way Records takes us back to 1988 and the synthesizer and drum machine-driven Highlife antics of obscure outfit Ode-Omore Osarenren & Ewaen Osetin Stars. Even by the standards of Nigerian music, it's an obscurity, but also pretty special. Check, for example, the clicking machine drums, group vocals and exotic synthesizer lines of opener "Ukhiokhio", the gorgeous guitars, whistling synth melodies and percussive breeziness of "Omoto" and the trumpet-laden tropical brilliance that is closing cut "Enothiomwani". The set's most endearing quality is undoubtedly its inherent positivity, something that's only enhanced by the band's use of sparkling synthesizer sounds.

  3. Potion - "City Girls" (5:05)
  4. The Breakfast Band - "Funksters" (7:35)
  5. Yeow Band - "Energy" (3:38)
  6. Scratch (Gonzalez) - "Keep On Searching For Love" (6:10)
Review: In recent years, more and more crate diggers have been exploring "Brit-funk" - a previously largely overlooked British variant of jazz-funk popular in underground UK clubs between the late 1970s and mid '80s. One such digger is Parisian producer and DJ Saint-James, who here presents his second deep dive into the obscure genre. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the percussive, synth-heavy soul brilliance of Stikki Stuff's "School" and the pre-Lover's Rock, reggae-influenced electrofunk smoothness of Cruzial's "Send Me Your Love", to the killer slap bass of The Breakfast Band's club-rocker "Funksters" and the sparkling boogie badness of "Keep On Searching For Love" by Scratch (Gonzalez).
