Jesuino Galo Doido (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: GAMM 129. Rel: 10 Dec 18
  1. Jesuino Galo Doido (Afshin & Black Jazz edit)
  2. Make It Reggae (Afshin & Black Jazz edit)
Review: Earlier in the month, Parisian producer Afshin joined forces with Kiss My Black Jazz and served up a brilliant, two-track missive of jazz-funk and blues-house reworks on G.A.M.M. Here they reunite for round two. This time round, they begin by reworking a shuffling, chant-along Afro-Brazilian gem of unknown origin, extending the carnival-ready percussive intro before unleashing the shuffling, sun-kissed samba rhythm and some of the sweetest vocals this side of a sing-along in a chocolate factory. Over on side B they give a similar tune to a killer chunk of reggae-funk fusion rich in warm dub bass, bongo-laden beats, bluesy guitar solos, fuzzy horns and James Brown style guttural vocals.

Incapable (12")
Cat: GALL 005. Rel: 10 Dec 18
  1. Incapable (8:24)
  2. Princess (5:56)
  3. Feeling You Feeling Me (7:34)
Review: Sheffield's Bitter End crew has always been a little blurry about which producer - or producers - is behind the consistently excellent 12" series, though different versions of some previous releases have ended up on Crooked Man albums. It appears that this EP is the work of Richard Barratt and co, too, with A-side "Incapable" - a warm, woozy and disco-flecked chunk of happy-but-sad dancefloor goodness - featuring the (un-credited) lyrics and vocals of his old buddy Roisin Murphy. That track's the standout, though piano-laden disco-tech cut "Feeling You Feeling Me" and "Princess", seemingly a rework of the A-side featuring blissful jazz guitar solos rather than a headline vocal, are also superb.

  1. I'll Make The Living (If You Make The Loving Worthwhile) (4:56)
  2. All About The Paper (4:40)
Review: Like a lot of 1960s soul singers, former Dukeys member Gene Chandler eventually turned his hand to disco in the 1970s. While not all of his disco records were successful, 1982's "I'll Make The Living (If You Make The Loving Worthwhile)" still resonates, as seen by its regular appearances in Horse Meat Disco DJ sets. As this reissue shows, it remains a sweet and touching chunk of mid-tempo dancefloor goodness. It boasts some particularly special slap bass, as well as spacey synths, cut-glass strings and a wonderful lead vocal by Chandler. "All About The Paper", in which Chandler offers common sense financial advice (of sorts), is a little heavier and punchier with its grandiose production.

  2. Falling In Love (Tom Noble remix) (6:06)
  3. Prism (4:41)
  4. Prism (Sleazy McQueen remix) (7:28)
Review: Stockholm twosome Dagfest have already notched up digital releases on ISM Records, Editorial and Bearded Man, though this outing on Lovedancing marks their first appearance on wax. It's a double header of sorts, with a different original track and remix on each side. "Falling In Love" sits on side A, with the original's breezy boogie/reggae/soul fusion flex being given a harder boogie/proto-house makeover by the reliable Tom Noble. Over on the flip, "Prism" is a deliciously positive chunk of boogie/nu-disco fusion blessed with near Balearic synth solos and some wonderful jazz-funk flourishes. Sleazy McQueen takes a different approach on his remix, turning the track into a peak-time friendly disco-house bumper.

  2. Drum Tool 1 (4:08)
  3. Kazi Kazi (4:58)
  4. Drum Tool 2 (3:32)
Review: Mysterious DJ Surph up next for OYE Edits series: run by the respected Berlin record store in Prenzlauer Berg, with previous resplices coming courtesy of Marcel Vogel, Hade and Jonny Rock. There's much to enjoy on this EP - starting with a rearrangement of some loungey-soul/funk on the ripper "Final Statement" (featuring a killer brass section), some Disco Halal style oddball exotics in the form of "Kazi Kazi" and the EP's second "Drum Tool" which boasts deeply meditative and hypnotic polyrhythms in the mix.

Review: Buttery bits of 'honey-house' with love on offer once again from the Honey Butter camp, following up a great last one by Swales. This time around, the Amsterdam/Malmo joint venture presents an EP by Frenchman Jehan (About Disco/Star Creature). There's lots to enjoy on this EP - highlights include the slo-mo disco for late night lovers on "Sugar Riderz" or "Pop Corn", and the smokin' hot grooves of the lo slung variety on "Sucre Sale" or "Jambalaya Avenue" - the latter in particular will really lock you in and is well funky!

  1. Miss Manhattan (vocal) (8:53)
  2. Miss Manhattan (instrumental) (8:36)
  3. Manhattan's Piano Reprise (1:04)
Review: Best Records get busy with this absolutely classic slice of early Italian disco from 1981, put together in the one-off-studio-project stylee by Al Festa, Claudio Giusti and Francesco Puccioni. The full vocal mix on the A side nearly hits the nine minute mark, and it's all gold from the chirpy horn section to the scintillating vocal turn by Sharon Russell. The influence from the Nile Rodgers school of funk is plain to hear, not least on the instrumental take on the B side, but also watch out for the gorgeous soliloquy of the "Manhattan's Piano Reprise" which is snuck on as an added extra from the archives.

The Brasserie Heroique Edits Part VI (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: BH 056. Rel: 12 Dec 18
  1. Half Body (5:12)
  2. Cheeks (5:15)
  3. Plateau (7:22)
  4. Mirage (6:28)
Review: Berceuse Heroique's "Brasserie Heroique" edits series rarely disappoints, primarily because its chosen editors always steer clear of the obvious in favour of obscure, oddball source material. There's lots of this kind of eccentric madness to be found on Mori-Ra's second contribution to the series. Check, for example, the bonkers alien funk/Italo-disco fusion of "Half Body" - all Helium-voiced vocal samples, fizzing electronic motifs, crashing sound effects and squeezable synth-bass - and the heady beauty of "Mirage", where woozy backing vocals and crystalline synthesizer lines cluster around ricocheting drum machine beats. Elsewhere, "Plateau" turns a new age style soundscape into a dreamy house shuffler, while "Cheeks" sees the accomplished editor have his way with a new wave era Japanese pop gem.

  1. Computer Communications (10:50)
  2. Computer Communications (remix) (7:24)
Review: Best Records get right to the heart of true Italo disco with this body-poppin' killer from 1983. REM were made up of Paolo Alfani and Nicola Serena, both based in Florence and well ahead of the curve with their experimental electronic disco sound. Making fantastic use of the Mattel Speak & Spell for their vocal hooks, this enterprising duo cooked up a veritable club bomb with their fusion of sleek drum machine rhythms, throbbing acid basslines and romantic synth tones that would come to be widely used in Detroit techno some years later. There's a full original take of the track on the A side, while the flip features a tweaked "remix" version to give you even more of that robo-vocoder action.
