Machines Of May (7:25)

Dark As Night (7:43)
Swiss (6:26)
Review: Since returning to action in 2016 after a seven-year break, 1990s techno survivor Lee Renacre AKA 100 Hz has released some of the best music of his career. This fine four-tracker marks the long-serving Londoner's first outing on Romanian imprint Amphia, who are best known for serving up sparse, minimalistic tech-house. As you'd expect, there's a slightly fuller sound here, though sonically it's as pleasingly druggy and mind-mangling as much of the imprint's output. Renacre brilliantly flits between trippy, arpeggio-driven, house-tempo techno (the otherworldly 'Machines of May'), dubstep-influenced UK bass/techno fusion ('Gadget', which echoes the ethos of his early 100 Hz releases with James Chapman), intergalactic tech-house ('Dark as Night'), and frankly filthy low-end wobblers ('Swiss').

Review: Artificial Owl Recordings welcomes aboard New Yorkers Satoshi Tomiie and Naotake Gunji for the label's fifth release; a recording of their collaborative A_A project and live show, which first came to light at the Fridman Gallery in Manhattan. A_A, an ongoing audio project, explores the visceral tension between floor-centric ambient electronica and improvised sound/audio performance. Here, found and object-activated sounds fire a collective dub trigger, producing a distinctly somatic regrounding across five original works.

Review: A-ha's 2016 compilation Time and Again: The Ultimate A-ha makes its debut on vinyl with a newly expanded tracklist of 21 songs, now encompassing material from all 11 original studio albums. The collection's first disc features their iconic hits like 'Take on Me' and 'The Living Daylights,' spanning their career from upbeat synth-pop beginnings to the more orchestral tones of later works such as 'Under the Makeup.' This compilation remains the most comprehensive overview of A-ha's career to date, now available in vinyl format that captures the breadth and evolution of their sound across the decades.

Piano Sunset (4:32)
Lost In Palms (4:55)
Review: The diffuse hues and retro-feeling colours of the artwork on this new 45rpm from Star Creature perfectly embody the downtempo and Balearic sounds within. They come from A Vision Of Panorama who seems to ever more have the dance floor in sights over his last few releases. That's not to say these are banging tunes - but they do have lovely grooves. 'Piano Sunset' is a real spine tingler with 80s keys and mid tempo drums that come alive with crisp hits and a fresh bassline. 'Lost In Palms' then has a shuffling and low slung groove with nice wet hits. Add in some more lush chords and you have a real pearler.

Swathe (6:04)
Review: A1 Bassline man Christian Viers stepped up to deliver a debut album earlier this year in the shape of Technicality, issued through Shadow Child and Kry Wolf's Food Music and a fine addition to his discography following several years' worth of 12" releases. Those fans of vinyl clamouring for cuts from the album in a physical format will be heartened to see four highlights gathered here on a belated 12" addendum. It's full on club tackle from the off, with "Odd Soulz" shuffling drums, resonant lead synth and killer 808 hats an obvious track to include on this 12". "Reinforced Texture" is possibly a homage to the iconic breakbeat crew Reinforced Records, and a fine one at that, whilst Viers's undeniable production diversity is apparent on the B side that swings from a classic house flavour to some sweet acid.

How U Do It
Review: Prescription and Guidance mainstay Abacus has already done enough to assure his eternal legacy in the story of deep house. But thankfully he is still turning out superbly deep sounds that are as profound and emotive as they are heady and escapist. Here he is back on Phonogramme with 'Analogue Stories Vol. 2' which comes on a unique semi-transparent 12'' vinyl. The beats are warm and humid, thickly coated with a diffuse synth hue as the rooted drums roll on smoothly. 'How U Do It' is out pick - a musical odyssey with layers of instrumentation, piano and percussion all topped off with a Moodyman vocal sample.

Review: Shlomi Aber & Kashpitzky join forces once again to make their Blueprint Records debut with four formidable techno tracks on the 'Sonic Underworld' EP. Sharing production duties on each side, Aber and Kashpitzky bring experience gleaned from prior releases on the likes of CLR, Drumcode, and BPitch Control - dropping clout like bombs - to this ultimate moment, on whose A-side we now hear 'Immersive' fusions of broken beat and far-flung techno atmospheres amount to a tittilating 'Saga'. The B-side's 'Rust' and 'Bazement' are equally as synthetic yet also hear the EP grow increasingly crazed, with the former indulging an entrained trance despite an equally adamant kick-drive, and the latter moving pure tweezy and swirly.

In 2019, self-described "boy band" hip-hop collective Brockhampton released their most commercially viable album with Ginger, but that same year, creative mastermind and leader Kevin Abstract would begin laying the groundwork for his future solitary ventures. While Arizona Baby marked Abstract's third solo endeavour, it would be the first since his group's signing to Sony RCA, which naturally meant an increased budget, wider distribution and far more attention than any previously released output baring Ian Simpson's stage moniker. Primarily produced by Jack Antonoff (Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey) and Brockhampton's Romil Hemnani, the project would initially be released piecemeal in three chapters, sonically moving from experimentalist hip-hop to increasingly hazy neo-psych r&b and avant-pop, before finally being re-released in its entirety. Unpacking the intensity of his newfound fame, the homophobia still rife within the hip-hop community, as well as delving into the controversial ousting of former bandmate and high school friend Ameer Vann; Arizona Baby covers a plethora of musical and personal ground in its half-hour runtime, while the retrospective lens of Brockhampton's abrupt demise in 2022 adds further depth and an air of interpersonal tragedy to the material's confessional nature.

It's 1977 and AC/DC are not-so-fresh after a spell as the support on Black Sabbath's tour. Looking for a new bassist, after a disagreement over whether to pick Manfred Mann's Colin Pattenden, the band agree on Cliff Williams, who would remain in place until 2003. Recording what became Powerage, their fifth studio album, Atlantic Records soon complained there wasn't a sellable lead single. 'Rock 'n' Roll Damnation' took form, one of the group's outliers, which comes without standard guitar solo but with maracas and hand claps. While this proved divisive among die hard fans, the album itself has gold waiting to be discovered deeper down. 'Gimme A Bullet', for example, has been cited as the finest track the late Bon Scott would write, his lyrical flair and deft metaphorical wit shining through on a tune that won't let up. This was his final LP, and tragically three years later he was no longer with us, marking an end to the group's iconic first chapter.

Kniteforce Records drop the first instalment of remixes for UK hardcore royalty Acen's landmark 'Trip II The Moon' series. Originally released on Phil Fearon's iconic Production House imprint, Acen's Trip II The Moon trilogy formed a crucial part of the hardcore canon. The first remix comes courtesy of d&b veteran Danny Byrd, who delivers a bassbin-rattling slice of choppy late hardcore nostalgia, replete with air-raid sirens, plentiful Prizna-esque wubs, and a rushier rendition of the famous brass hook. Next in line is NRG, who reimagines 'Trip II The Moon Part 2' as a vast, multipartite 'ardkore odyssey, sashaying between misty-eyed E-lation and punishing hoover beatdowns, before Glasgow's bounce techno innovator Scott Brown raises the roof with a typically rushy hard house version of 'Trip II The Moon Part 3'.

Review: The Kwench label is back with more tasteful and timeless house and techno fusions here as Ad & The Persuader link up for The Truth EP. The title cut opens up with some lazy, wavy, dubby grooves with heady pads and then a dub version makes it even more fleshy and horizontal. 'Strolling' keeps things classy and deep cut with pillowy kicks toped with starry-eyed melodies and some glitchy perc. An cappella closes out the EP for DJ use. This is a quietly excellent 12" that oozes quality.

Review: Rawbeats offer up yet another addition to their sub-catalogue Extrasensorial, which aims to, in their words, "soothe your soul and ignite your senses". While that might sound contradictory to the point of impossible, the label prove this to be not so. First up on the witness stand comes Stefano Adriezzi with 'Sintomas', whose centrally choppy Reese-scape both excites and incites the listener, causing vestigial reflexes to move either voluntarily or involuntarily. Then Lo-lo's 'The Last Domain' and Anna Wall's 'Mercury Retrograde' do similar, the former's mistral melodic trance and the latter's more rancorous murk-offs offering up convincing ancillary proofs to Adriezzi's initial sonic testimony. Finally, though, Dream World's 'Alice Ghost' delivers the smoking gun of Rawbeats' soothing excitement; snippy electro, whorlingly high up-down pads and sampled musings on a mystical higher power, building to a minimal but effectively purgatory sequential cascade.

Review: The sixth album by American scene/screamo band AFI hears a timely 20th Anniversary reissue here. Hinting at a more gothic direction and an abandonment of their former footings in hardcore punk and horrorpunk, we hear Davey Havok and co. move through fast-paced punk and spitty vocals as ever, harking back to a much earlier time (2003) in which this genre sadly held more weight. Like a high school drama plunged into a nightmarish vampire apocalypse, the blend of sounds here are perfect for a late-night Twilight or Buffy binge - with sad piano interludes interspersed with grungey axe washouts and ruminations on hopelessness and despair.

Afrika Bambaataa was a pioneering rap force before most people had even heard the word. Raised in the South Bronx, he became a pioneering DJ, rapper and songwriter who put on large block parties that rocked his local neighbourhood. It was alongside Soulsonic Force in 1982 on this record that he cemented his place in the history books as one of the most revered and innovative artists of his time. The album has been a go-to for generations of artists ever since and remains a long-time favourite amongst breakdancers for its body-popping electro beats.

Review: Alessandro Alessandroni (often said to be the most famous whistle in the history of film thanks to appearing on famous spaghetti western 'A Fistful of Dollars') is a legendary composer and musician who very much had a big say in the characteristic sound of Italian soundtracks during the 60s and 70s. This lovely 7" from Four Flies showcases that with two well chosen cuts that have been taken from a dusty tape found in the great man's vault. 'Shine On' is superbly stylish funk with some seductive vocals and rolling drums all peppered with golden chords and dynamic horns. 'Prohibition' is a little more mellow but still features magic Rhodes and characterful horns.

Review: 'Disco Tape', which launched via a must-check 12" back in August 2023, os Sound Exhibitions' multi-artist EP series. This second volume is a similarly action-packed affair that gleefully blurs the boundaries between reworks, re-edits and sample-heavy original productions. Alexny kicks things off with two sun-soaked treats - the percussive and warming tropical disco tribute 'Caribbean Breeze' and the sax solo-sporting dancefloor shuffle of 'Bada Boom' - before Paride Pavone rounds off side A with the jazzy disco-house celebration of 'In Key'. Phil Disco impresses on side B with two killer cuts (the funky bass-propelled disco heaviness of 'Never Gonna Leave You' and the swirling jazz-funk-house bump of 'Disco Ipno', while disco-funk specialist C Da Afro rounds things off in fine style via the insatiable grooves and fluttering flute solos of 'The Choice'.

Review: Cork based Irish post-black metal pioneers Altar Of Plagues are often cited as one of the pioneering acts to combine elements of second wave tremolo-picking, blast-beating black metal with post-rock and euphoric shoegaze which has since been popularised by artists such as Deafheaven and Liturgy. Trilogy serves as an encapsulation of the band's three vital full-lengths, White Tomb (2009), Mammal (2011), and the epic swansong Teethed Glory & Injury (2013), all re-issued with new artwork and design, as well as being remastered for vinyl from the original tapes. Likely to be the final time these works are ever pressed to wax, at least by label home Prosthetic Records; this is a definitive collector's piece of one of the most underrated and integral contributors and elevators to the black metal genre in the 21st century.

Happy New Year
Review: The 1981 debut of Altered Images, Happy Birthday, encapsulates early 80s new wave charm, highlighted by the infectious title track which was produced by the legendary Martin Rushent and proved a massive smash hit single. Altered Images are a Scottish new wave/post-punk band who found success in the early 1980s, fronted by singer Clare Grogan, mainly successful between 1981 to 1983. This deluxe 2CD set offers a nostalgic deep dive, featuring the original album and a bonus CD packed with rare gems. The bonus disc includes the non-album 'Dead Pop Stars,' five B-sides, an extended version of 'Happy Birthday,' and rare tracks from a FlexiPop magazine flexi-disc. Presented in a 7" deluxe gatefold packaging, this set also includes an 8-page booklet with complete lyrics and credits. This reissue captures the playful yet edgy spirit of Altered Images' seminal release. Whether you are a long time fan or interested in getting to know them, this is a great place to step into their sound and enjoy a comprehensive look at their first songs.

Chords & Theories

Deep House
Chords & Theories (8:23)
Stay Another Day (7:02)
Naked Truth (6:19)
Review: French producer Anaxander follows up great releases by legends Reggie Dokes and Kai Alce on new imprint People Of Earth. He's had a steady output in the last few years releasing on the likes of Local Talk, Dame Music and Tasteful Nudes to name but a few. "Chords & Theories" is delightfully dusty deep house with a swing fuelled rhythm, emotive chords and epic piano stabs. On the flip "Stay Another Day" is the kind of classic early 90's Chicago deep house that's so sincere you could have sworn it was a lost tape from the Prescription or Alleviated catalogue from way back when. Finally "Naked Truth" gets a bit more uptempo on this soulful deep techno jam with rich synth tapestries and syncopated rhythms. Tip!

Review: When Danilo 'MCDE' Plessow and Bobby van Putten established their Space Grapes label last year, it was their stated intention to present 'the best in contemporary live dance music'. What they meant, we suspect, was releases like this debut album from van Putten's Another Taste combo - a four-piece whose colourful and sonically authentic sound rooted in boogie, 80s electrofunk and obscure, private press disco. The results are undeniably impressive, sounding something like a long-lost album from 1983 - complete with kaleidoscopic synths, soulful vocals and killer basslines - of the kind that dusty-fingered crate diggers consider a 'holy grail'. Highlights include the Plessow co-produced boogie brilliance of 'Anything You Want' and the funky bassline driven mid-tempo disco-soul of 'Time Is On My Side'.

Review: Rawax welcomes ARAPU for a third release on the label and this time the minimal maestro taps into open-air dancing vibes with a nice organic and summery sound, but still plenty of direct grooves. 'Take It Deep Down' has dreamy vocal coos swirling up top next to soft synth patterns as the percussive beats drive down low. On the flip, 'The After' is a deep cut with rubbery, thudding kicks and organic percussion next to more smart vocal sounds that bring human emotions to the moving beats.

Review: This album transports listeners to 1950s and 60s Colombia, where the tropical sounds of the Caribbean and Pacific coasts dominated the mainland music scene. Edmundo Arias, alongside Lucho Bermudez and Pacho Galan, was one of the pivotal figures of this era, yet his introverted nature kept him out of the spotlight, making his contributions less celebrated than his peers. Born in Tulua in 1925, Arias came from a musical family and mastered several instruments. After his father's death in 1948, he and his brother moved to Medellin, the epicenter of Colombia's music industry. Arias quickly established himself as a talented musician, composer, arranger, and band leader for leading labels like Zeida, Ondina, Silver, and Sonolux. Despite his preference for working behind the scenes, Arias' impact was profound, collaborating with numerous musicians and mentoring young artists. His prolific output included hundreds of compositions and numerous albums. This compilation, Guepa Je!, shows the finest of Arias' work from the 50s and 60s, a period often regarded as the pinnacle of his career. Enjoy the vibrant, joyous sounds of Colombia's tropical music heritage.
