Remixes (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: SNKR 014. Rel: 10 Jul 18
  1. Gone Too Soon (Sully remix) (6:30)
  2. Limit Of Paradise (Falty DL remix) (5:37)
Review: Sneaker Social Club are not messing around! Following their previous outings from the legendary trio 2 Bad Mice comes remixes from two impeccably forward thinking break crafters; Sully takes "Gone Too Soon" into some fantastical places as the breaks scream jungle but the big breeze pads scream Alex Reece but both elements work together emotively. Falty DL, meanwhile, gives us a hardcore schooling on "Limit Of Paradise" with its heavily layered breaks, wall of sound pads and dynamic drops into spacious hooks. Bad to the (clear vinyl) bone!

  1. DJ Quest - "Bytecon" (T-Wrex remix)
  2. 30Hz - "Bytecon" (T-Wrex remix)
Review: Remixes by 30Hz & DJ Quest. "Robots Ready From Mars" is tackled by Quest who gives the track a heavier, clubby breakbeat mix. Fits nicely next to tracks from the likes of The Stanton Warriors or Tayo.

Review: Long-time turntablist, erstwhile Christine band member and recent 45 Live crew member, North French Aeon Seven delivers his first ever 45. A loose-swinging, wah wah-rattling, organ-blasting feel good b-boy bomb with all the cheeky chops and cuts you'd expect from a deck wizard of his calibre, "Seven Breaks" is primed for party and battling devastation. Complete with a creative DJ acapella scratch cut, this 45 is alive.

  1. Floating (4:01)
  2. Timed (6:11)
  3. Queue A (5:24)
  4. 22:22 (5:54)
Review: Italy's Andrea is now a trusted member of the Ilian Tape collective, having only released for the German label thus far. But, why would he go elsewhere? These guys are on fire, and releasing some of the most interesting shades of industrial 4/4 these days. This is his fourth EP for the throng, and "Floating" starts off with a beatless, wide-eyed landscape of soft pads to introduce the twisted, shifting, break-driven tech of "Timed". "Queue A", on the flip of the disc, is a driving pile of rusty kick drums and oceanic pads that head into the deeper end of the techno sphere, while "22:22" goes all-out on the jungle patterns with its broken groove that recalls the likes of LTJ Bukem or Dego at their more pacy moods. A killer of an EP!

  1. Flow
  2. Mr Mumble
  3. Satin
  4. Satin (remix)
Review: Robin Ball has been on a roll of late, flaunting his wares on the Memory Box label amongst others. He makes a second outing on Groovepressure with four tracks of dynamic, inventive machine jams touching on synthwave influences and a healthy dose of electro. There's atmosphere loaded into each of these forthright, roughly hewn workouts, not least on the eerie, trancey synth strings on "Mr Mumble". The B side features the steadiest material in the shape of two versions of "Satin" that tap into the housier end of Ball's output.

White Hot (7")
Cat: JAL 287V. Rel: 15 Nov 18
  1. Basement Freaks - "White Hot" (feat Kylie Auldist - Basement Freaks remix) (3:39)
  2. John Turrell - "Won't Get Fooled Again" (Basement Freaks remix) (4:20)
Review: Fizzing funkateers Basement Freaks can usually be relied upon to bring the dancefloor goods. That's certainly the case on this dancefloor-focused seven-inch. On the A-side they rework one of their own classic cuts, offering a punchier and heavier take on 2016 Kylie Auldist collaboration "White Hot". Rich in flash-friend funk guitars, crunchy breaks and life-affirming horns, their new revision is undoubtedly more DJ-friendly than the original album version. Turn to the flip to hear their tidy new take on Smoove collaborator John Turrell's 2013 cut "Won't Get Fooled Again", which they cannily refurbish as a wobble bass-propelled chunk of P-funk flavoured dancefloor soul.

  4. Lastrack - "Axel Phif" (part 2) (5:30)
  5. Jean Redondo - "Gen" (5:01)
Review: More spatial exorcisms from the BFDM family. New and old faces alike, all French, it's the label's broadest and heaviest V/A wax to date. Basses Terres takes us deep in the machine with a well oiled slo-mo pneumatic break, Comic Sans-slinger C.R.K cooks up a spicy gumbo of militant apocalypse electro while Jonquera continues the electroid theme with a devilish pitched snare roll and wry synth slap bass pops and twang. Elsewhere Lastrack insists we travel to Jupiter by way of the Amazon while Daxyl's Jean Redondo closes the show on a schizoid broken techno freak out. Stark.

Razor/Predators (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HILEVRECS 001. Rel: 15 Oct 18
  1. Razor
  2. Predators
Review: Bristol-based badman Borai has been quietly issuing some of the city's most immense club wreckers for many years now, sometimes in partnership with October, and sometimes flying solo (as on the crucial Anybody From London for Hotline Recordings). Here he's inaugurating Higher Level with some absolute dance slayers, kicking off with the mammoth pitched-down drum funk and gut-wrenching bass of "Razor" before switching stance for the dreamier but no less rowdy "Predators." Both cuts are a masterclass in classic breakbeat science, delivering the foundational UK sound with panache that sets these weapons far apart from the rest of the pack.

Review: Following up great ones by Marco Lazovic, AFAMoo and ASOK, Sweden's DJ Different steps up to the Lobster family's main label with an EP that's best described as traversing the 'Orion Nebula to the very edges of the Oort Cloud'. From the evocative sci-fi ambient of "Fast Forward To The Outer Rim" and the zeitgeist of early '90s rave/hardcore on "Angels" and similarly on the pitched-down junglisms of "Real" featuring the unmistakable vocals of a certain well known pop diva. It all ends smoothly with the soulful and emotive deep house of "Memories Of The Old World" that is the soundtrack to a perfect comedown.

  2. Afters (3am mix) (6:18)
  3. DYCX 5 (6:35)
Review: Not content with releasing Appleblim's debut album this month, Sneaker Social Club stoke the fires with this highly anticipated sophomore EP. Once again, it casts a wide net across the house/axis with all corners chartered: "Influence" hits with a warm synth insistency you might imagine Lil Louis heralding in a Chicago warehouse 30 years ago. "Afters" is a classic strutter with a sultry piano-tickled swing while "DYCX 5" slaps with a relenting jack and spiralling arpeggios laced with pure positivity. On point.

  4. Octo Octa - "Beam Me Up" (To The Goddess mix) (7:54)
  5. Octo Octa - "Beam Me Up" (Please take Me Away mix) (6:25)
Review: Before heading out on tour together earlier in the year, Eris Drew and Octo Octa dreamt up the idea of a joint release. Happily, Naive was only too happy to oblige. Drew handles the A-side, serving up two versions of bustling, Clavinet-sporting, breakbeat-driven joy "Hold Me" (the effervescent "T4T Embrace Mix" and a jaunty DJ tool style "Synth-a-pella") and the organ-laced deep breakbeat shuffle of "Trans Love Vibration". Over on Side B, HNYTRX and 100% Silk alumnus Octo Octa takes over, joining the dots between rave-era UK house and saucer-eyed early '90s U.S garage dubs on "Beam Me Up (To The Goddess Mix)", before re-imagining the track as a twinkling fusion of dream house bliss and bustling breakbeats on the arguably superior "Please Take Me Away Mix".

Review: They mysterious duo of BufoBufo and Corporeal Face join forces on their new UK based Escape Earth project. It follows up the former's What's That Noise EP which inaugurated the label last year. The Exosphere EP begins with the spacey Afro house vibe of "Escape Earth Theme", which then receives a neon-lit remix by Madrid based Italian Bawrut - which is pretty terrific - much funkier and uplifting than the original. On the flip, get ready for some ravey antics on the breaks driven epic "Gravity Well" that shimmers away gloriously beneath lush FM synth tones.

Review: Who is this deep space stranger? Who are Folklore? What's in the water in Toulouse? Because the city is churning out some impeccable bass talents right now... And we suspect some of them are involved in this mysterious project. Each track tells a different tale in a subtly circular fashion; "Kingwise" shimmers into a light, breezy UKG-style two-step, "Untitled" cranks up on channel one with its low and slow dub techno mysticism while "Flat 8" leans back on an icy Alaska-style jungle roll-out. Finally "Version 2" takes us back over familiar chords but does so with a sublime dub beat and sense-blurring clipped synths. The music has all the answers.

Review: Perennial party boosters, Breakbeat Paradise dive into spring with a fire quartet of modern funk. With bands repping across Europe, it's a global groove affair as longstanding German funkateers buss up big boogie hooks on "Get On Down", Swiss soulboys Grand Mothers Funck up the tempo with the sweaty floor-focussed groove of "The Dog" and Nasa Funk fly the p-funk flag so hard and proud they need a new pole. UK's A Man About A Dog rips up the finale with a scratched-out Latin heater. Original.

Review: More oddball grooves from Down Under, courtesy of new Aussie imprint Vulcan Venti - which follows up a great debut by Tambo's House earlier in the year. The Melbournians present Perth's Hamish Rahm aka Hame DJ, whose Dog Swamp EP features three tracks carefully constructed for the discerning disc jockey. Enjoy the throwback sounds of '90s rave on "LL", the frantic yet rather evocative electro bass of the title track and "Exe" which goes for that classic West Yorkshire techno sound of yesteryear.

"Oh Diggity" takes TC's version of Bashmore and takes it for a romantic walk down Blackstreet while "Love Gets Sweeter" busses up a bit of Mr Quaye with a sugar-sweet jungle feel that's perfect for the summer ahead. Subtle as a hammer.

  1. Sweetness & Light (4:39)
  2. Sweetness & Light (For Life remix) (4:48)
Review: In what might be something of an unexpected reissue move, early rave belter "Sweetness & Light" from Australian duo Itch-E & Scratch-E gets a fresh airing for the 21st century no less than 25 years after it first landed in a hailstorm of bright melodic lines and raucous tempo. In its original form "Sweetness & Light" is everything you could possibly want from an early trance stormer, all plush layers of harmony reaching an emotional crescendo over an irrepressibly bouncy beat. The "For Life" remix meanwhile flips the script with a blissed out, chord-heavy version that slows the pace right down, possibly for the original fans of the tune who need things a little slower now.

Review: It's been a hot minute since Timothy J. Fairplay slipped on his Junior Fairplay guise, but he's done just that for this bleep-tastic new 12" on (Emotional) Especial. "End Of Love" is unabashed in its embrace of early Yorkshire techno tones, making a fine job of resurrecting the bleep spectre and letting it shake up the dance once more. Roy Of The Ravers is a smart choice of remixer, and he brings an off-kilter acid rub to the table in his idiosyncratic, braindance-inflected style. The B-side is equal laden with purposefully dusty dance grooves transplanted from the late 80s / early 90s, with "Faxes From The Future" hitting a particularly sharp point in its lazy breakbeat roll and the clanging harmonies of the stabs.
