Bytecon (remixes)
Cat: SATRX 005. Rel: 17 Oct 06
  1. DJ Quest - "Bytecon" (T-Wrex remix)
  2. 30Hz - "Bytecon" (T-Wrex remix)
Review: Remixes by 30Hz & DJ Quest. "Robots Ready From Mars" is tackled by Quest who gives the track a heavier, clubby breakbeat mix. Fits nicely next to tracks from the likes of The Stanton Warriors or Tayo.

Love Somebody
Cat: JAL 355V. Rel: 02 Sep 21
  1. Love Somebody (2:51)
  2. Promised Land (3:22)
Review: The JalapeNo label never fails to serve up the sort of hot and spicy funk sounds that electrify dance floors. It is UK beatmakers The Allergies who take care of this one with fire-in-the-hole future classics that pack powerful punches with their famous signature sound. First up is the vintage funk of 'Love Somebody' with its big and beefy breaks and vintage sounds. On the flipside is 'Promised Land' which is the title track from the forthcoming album. It's a big and bulky breakbeat smasher that will get the feet tapping and the fists pumping.

Burnt EP
Burnt EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AHR 012. Rel: 26 Oct 20
  1. Burnt
  2. Arnda E
  3. Duck Tape
  4. Empting
  5. Duck Tape (Goddard remix)
Review: Alps 2 come to Ad Hoc with a sound that will get a whole lot of listeners feeling misty eyed for good times in well-stocked festival tents. There are unmistakable whiffs of Floating Points and Four Tet in the likes of 'Burnt', which positively emit vitamin D vibes out of the speakers, so infectious is the summery mood contained within those luscious synths. 'Arnda E' has a deeper, knottier quality but it's still a resolutely sweet track, while 'Duck Tape' heads into more fractured territory with a chopped up RnB vocal that calls back to the heyday of future garage. 'Empting' completes this effervescent EP with a more abstract piece that showcases the variety at this breakthrough producer's disposal.

Hard Crew (12")
Cat: SN 4. Rel: 12 Apr 21
  1. Hard Crew (Reinst8 mix) (5:38)
  2. Hard Crew (Denham Audio remix) (7:57)
  3. Hard Crew (feat DJM - Samurai Breaks remix) (5:45)
  4. Hard Crew (Mechanizm & Kin remix) (4:55)
Review: UK rave veterans Altern 8 hadn't put out new music in over 25 years. And then they dropped new single 'Hard Crew', which has been a staple of their live sets in recent times. The original is a bristling big beat tune with crashing drums and a snaking, filthy baseline. Things get more dreamy and leggy on the Denham Audio remix before two further versions head into hardcore and then jungle territory. A percentage of the profits of this release goes to the WeAreViable campaign which hopes to help the arts and events industries survive the pandemic.

  1. Sarec (5:45)
  2. Wired (4:56)
  3. Auxl (4:39)
  4. Kjone (4:13)
Review: Ilian Tape staple Andrea returns to the imprint, marking a big one for the Munich-based operation with a massive album by Skee Mask also this week. As always, UK and rave influences are abundant throughout the talented producer's work and this one is no exception. This EP is called Sktch and features the cavernous, glacial and downright knackered dub techno of 'Sarec', followed by the sinister subterranean breaks of Auxl and the meditative deep dubstep frequencies of 'Kjones' which sees him delve deeper into off kilter territory.

  3. Real Enough To Feel Good (5:09)
  4. Inna Circle (5:26)
  5. Last Before Lights (6:08)
  6. Quest Select (AM outro) (1:30)
Review: Manchester's revered DJ and producer Anz makes a long-awaited debut on Ninja Tune here with her standout All Hours EP. On it, the artist pays tribute to many different aspects of electronic music from across the ages. It is ambitious in that regard, but more than pulls off the task as it soundtracks a whole 24 hour period. After the warm bass and finger clicks of the opener come upbeat summer melodies and slapping electro-funk on 'You Could Be,' shuffling UKG vibes that are super sweet on 'Real Enough To Feel Good,' blistering old school breaks on 'Inna Circle' and a rave tinged old school and hardcore banger on 'Last Before Lights.' These genre-bending sounds are infectious and joyous in equal measure.

No Car Big Garage EP
No Car Big Garage EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HB 017. Rel: 12 Feb 21
  1. Why Does The Lion Get Lost In The Jungle?! (6:31)
  2. No Car, Big Garage (6:50)
  3. He Displays Nothing But... (9:05)
Review: Half Baked return with a serious heater from Arno, who explores all kinds of crafty twists on the garage and electro resurgences with one eye on the minimal scene. This is hardly minimal music though - 'Why Does The Lion Get Lost In The Jungle?!' rattles through pan pot percussion and twitchy breakstep rhythm formations while nagging synth lines and plenty of sub flex make for an especially naughty club wrecker. 'No Car, Big Garage' brings a little machine funk into the mix with some killer DX7 organ bass for good measure. 'He Displays Nothing But...' takes things in a more housey direction with some crisp 909 claps and a vivid, trippy backdrop of vocal samples and nimble synth lines. Classy, inventive dance music for the freaky people.

  1. I Own Your Energy (4:08)
  2. Inner Space (4:57)
  3. Go Deeper (4:44)
  4. Deep Breath (5:05)
Review: It's been two long years since Omar McCutcheon AKA Batu put out an EP on his popular Timedance label, so the arrival of I Own Your Energy is most welcome. In keeping with the weighty, mind-mangling "techno-not-techno" style he's developed over the last decade, the EP is full to bursting with hard-to-pigeonhole, sub-heavy excursions aimed fairly and squarely at UK bass dancefloors. Title track 'I Own Your Energy' wraps metallic motifs and echoing electronics to a sturdy post-dubstep beat, while 'Inner Space' is a fizzing, heavyweight techno workout that boasts some surprising (but inspired) sounds. Over on the flip, 'Go Deeper' is a sleazy and breathless polyrhythmic techno jam with a lo-fi edge, and 'Deep Breath' sounds like a Bristolian take on LFO circa Frequencies.

  1. Everyday Together (4:10)
  2. GNC NRG (4:26)
  3. Woman's Wisdom (3:53)
  4. So In Luv (4:10)
Review: Oakland-based artist Bored Lord makes a bold statement here on the T4T LUV NRG label with four fierce, club ready cuts of fulsome house. The opener plays with a famous pop vocal sample. It's layered into plunging bass and icy breaks with soulful pads finishing it off. 'GNC NRG' then skews acid and rasping snares, yelped vocals and farting bass into a big old banger, and 'Woman's Wisdom' is a psychedelic workout with chaotic patterns and banging drums. The final tune is the lush 'So In Luv.' The cover art by Periwinkle Lamb and EP title are inspired by a book called The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions.

Cat: WSR VA2. Rel: 16 Mar 20
  1. Box 5ive - "Silicate" (6:39)
  2. Keppel - "Taken For Granted" (6:38)
  3. Henry Greenleaf - "Snide" (4:59)
  4. Formant Value - "Polycausa" (7:03)
Review: Well Street keep up the heat as one of the most inventive labels operating in the liminal space between techno, dub and rhythmic mysticism. These various artist releases are also a perfect introduction to some essential new talent, and that's clear from the off with the snaking, echo chamber pressure of Box 5ive. Keppel's "Taken For Granted" is a distinctive slice of crooked 21st century soul that sports a whiff of early Kimbie / Blake in the vocals and overall attitude. Henry Greenleaf's "Snide" is a taut drum track that teases as much as it delivers, and Formant Value trips out into a meditative soundscape of pattering percussion and spacious atmospherics.

Review: Desert Sound Colony's Holding Hands has been turbo-charging dance floors for a couple of years now. And just 18 months after serving up the 10th release comes the 20th, which is another mutant fusion of bass, techno, dark garage and acid. Brazen takes care of the beats, opening with some jacked up kicks and rave-y melodic sequences, before 'Twocking' offers a skeletal garage groove, 'Muck' layers up warped synths and heavy sub bass into a physical groove and 'Achey Breaky' offers precision drum programming, throwback bass and jungle vibes to blow up any spot.

  1. In The Reeds (6:41)
  2. Scrying Mirror (5:50)
  3. Silver Disk (5:59)
  4. Remote Viewing (5:24)
Review: After MOY's 'Orbital Resonance' EP started the label in spectacular fashion, the second release on Damo B's EMOTEC comes from Ritual Poison co-founder BufoBufo. Following a run of releases on Furthur Electronix, Tone Dropout, Partout and Kouncil Cuts, BufoBufo's 'Perceptual Channels' EP merges acid, electro, breakbeats and the emotive melodies that have become a signature of his music. 'In The Reeds' sets burbling 303s and sci-fi synths against shredded drum loops; 'Silver Disk' nods to a love of classic hip-hop and hardcore, with a monstrous electro bassline; 'Scrying Mirror' has lush house chords, addictive bass and dark interludes; and 'Remote Viewing' is a more reflective downtempo piece with a blissed-out top line and influences from ambient and IDM.

Review: Emotional Response present something intriguing and oh so fresh from Cherrystones, who has most commonly been spotted recently lurking about labels like Bahnsteig 23, but in fact has a legacy reaching back to the late 90s. This new mini-album is reportedly the result of a pointed retreat to Scotland - a period of semi-isolation with minimal distractions from the serious business of analogue synths and reel-to-reel tape. There's a lot going on, from the slinky, boogie-licked groove of 'Amaziac' to the sludgy, wave tinted 'Rave Digger', but throughout the common theme is one of rough, upfront waveforms - maximal sounds with lashings of character, wielded with glee by an artist knee deep in their craft.

Review:  Breakbeat Paradise inaugurated their Toxic Funk series last year and did so with big, hard hitting mash up sand reworks of classics. Now they keep up the fierce and fiery sounds with two new killers from Crash Party. 'Dirty Glass' is all raw drums and raw, high speed funk feels and celebratory trumpet stabs. 'World Gone Def' is a more deep cut, boom-bap track with fat bass and plenty of attitude in the vocals.

  6. Zero Day Demon (2:33)
  7. Cafe Can (5:49)
Review: Yes, yes, one thousand times yes. Cryptobitch resurrect track ideas and stems originally formed in 2010, as if only to prove the fact they were well ahead of the curve back then. Packing plenty of IDM nuances, while everything here is very clever indeed it's also a prime example of why the hybrid dance revolution is so infectious and all-encompassing.

Call it drum & bass, call it bassline-infused techno, it's fast but funky, littered with rough riding breakbeats and absolutely inescapable. Futurism on record, you might say. From the acid-inflected jungle style 'DDoNK CrySyS' to the bouncing and jacking 'I Heart Hacking', the lush, opiate waves of synth juxtaposed with the flairs of snare-topped drums on 'Emotet (D Monica), to the compressed, crunching stepper 'Zero Day Demon'. Exceptional stuff that should be in everyone's bag. Or box.

  2. Adam Collins & Mark Ambrose - "Modern Moule" (6:45)
  3. D'Funk - "Break For Jungle" (6:01)
  4. Mark Ambrose - "Machine Man" (5:58)
Review: Crayon take another trip into the realm of deep house with this split 12" from a range of talented individuals. D'Funk takes a little lick from Roy Ayers on "Follow Me" and frames the sample in spooky keys carried along by a sturdy four-to-the-floor thump. Adam Collins and Mark Ambrose get a bit freakier on "Modern Moule", using all kinds of oddball sounds to whip up a decidedly off-kilter mood. D'Funk's "Break For Jungle" takes a few cues from the hardcore continuum, and places them in the context of an uptempo house workout, and then Mark Ambrose completes the set with the amped up old-skool techno energy of "Machine Man".

Review: Deejay Skamrok kicks off this own new self titled label with a a live session. 'Piece fo the Rock 1 & 2' is a breaks mix sampler featuring a selection of beats from the full length mixes. The a-side is all mad scratching and raw breaks with yelp gin vocal stabs and some tight as you like funk drumming. It's a red hot joint designed to blow up the floor. Flip it over and there is a more jazzed up sound. Here the tinny steel drums dart about the mix with more essential cop that starts off the label on a fine footing.

Review: Like his brother DJ Sotofett, DJ Fett Burger is not a producer you can 'second-guess'. On one release, you might get surging techno or outer-space ambient, while on another it could be analogue acid house or throbbing machine-disco. On 'Ephemeral Lightspeed', he adds punchy, crunchy breakbeats to a swirling ambient techno soundscape whose trippy and wide-eyed quality is confirmed by the Norwegian producer's accompanying 'Beatless Version'. On the flipside two friends of the Sex Tags family deliver their interpretations. First LNS re-imagines the track as a bouncy, keyboard stab-sporting electro treat, while the Snorre Magnar Solberg revision is a bonkers-but-brilliant, high-octane acid breakbeat rush-a-thon.

Review: Who is DJ Skift? This is the question on the lips of every player in every shady alley, every cigar-stained working men's club and every illicit poker game across the land. No one is truly sure, but we know the music is grimier and sleazier than all three of those environments. Rough, gutter-chomping and prone to walloping switches, each DJ tool tickles a different itch; 'Skift Break 1' is a squat party in a bottle, all rowdy and lofi, 'Skift Break 2' is a nihilistic 21st century take on hardcore while 'Skift Break 3' flips UKG over and makes us tickle its mangey underbelly. Grubby in the best possible way.

Review: Dystopian dramatist Djedjotronic is your pilot for this intergalactic trip on International Chrome. It is the label's ninth EP and is another standout offering that starts with twisted electro bass, cyborg funk and heavy, steel-plated drums. 'Slap' then layers up the melodies in a way that recalls Kraftwerk, but the drums and synths around them are much more militant and brutalist. 'Death Clock' then comes first as a searing, visceral rework by Jensen Interceptor and a darker, slower VIP Mix, Last of all, 'Statistics' closes out with bumping bass and crunchy hits that fizz and hiss.

Review: Shall Not Fade is in unstoppable form right now. The label is putting out a high rate of high quality releases hat traverse a broad electronic spectrum. Liam Doc is next up to take the mantle and head with it into colourful techno territory. The amusingly titled 'Jamie Said It Was Wicked' is a warm, twisted affair to build the tension and elsewhere there is glitchy broken beat techno funk on 'Icarus', old school jungle rollers like '2008' and bass heavy rhythmic workouts like 'Looks Like A Mad Place.' This nimble producer goes on to pull off even more impressive, inventive tricks on the final two tunes to make this a real standout.
