Sorrow Tears & Blood (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: SG 042. Rel: 06 Sep 17
  1. Sorrow, Tears & Blood (4:50)
  2. Dear World (3:57)
Review: Congolese musician Kiala Nzavotunga is something of an unheralded hero of the Afrobeat scene. Since deciding to visit Nigeria in the early 1970s he's played with many legendary figures and bands, including Fela Kuti, and famously founded one Europe's first Afrobeat band, Ghettoblaster. Now based in Japan, Afroblaster is his latest musical endeavour, and this is the outfit's debut single. A-side "Sorrow, Tears & Blood" offers a contemporary update of the Fela Kuti/Africa '70 sound, with a straighter 4/4 rhythm that should appeal to disco and house fans as well as Afrobeat enthusiasts. On the flip, "Dear Blood" offers a more traditional take on the style, with Kiala's vocal riding punchy horns, flanged funk guitars and a Tony Allen style drumbeat.

Review: Since the Beach Diggin' compilation series launched a few years back, a number of its obscure, Balearic-minded selections have been given full length reissues of their own. We can probably expect a number of the tracks from this brilliant fifth volume to get the same treatment. As usual, the wide-ranging track list is thick with highlights, from the synth-heavy, French language reggae of Raphael Toine's 1986 bubbler "Femmes Pays Douces" (taken from the artist's frustratingly hard to find Ce Ta Ou album) and vibraphone-laden jazz-funk smoothness of Yasuko Agwa's sought-after "L.A Night", to the barely-known brilliance of Andre Maria Tole's Cameroonian gem "Sweet Dole". In other words, it's another essential selection.

  1. Down In The Basement (5:04)
  2. The Opposite (3:15)
  3. Continue The Fun (Space version) (4:40)
  4. Tuto Bay (3:32)
Review: After two 45s on Les Disques Bongo Joe, Dutch Afrofunk space cadets make their debut on Soundway with their first full EP. Hurling all their roots and inspirations into a heady, bewitching brew of west African, Columbian, Caribbean, Latin and all-round cosmic fusion, the results are four slabs of world funk gold. "Down In The Basement" updates highlife styles with a salubrious big-bottomed disco twist, "The Opposite" ups the tempo with a little more cumbia charm while "Continue The Fun" adds a dub mentality to the mix as we're chugged to oblivion with heads down introspection. Finally "Tuto Bay" closes somewhere on a Cuban beach with rum-warmed harmonies. Beautiful.

Review: For the latest volume in their "Groove Diggers" series of rare record reissues, P-Vine is offering up a first ever CD edition of "In Togetherness", a 1977 private press album by singer Judy Pollak and Michigan-based backing band 33 1/3. Given that original copies of the hard-to-find record regularly change hands for four-figure sums, it's a reissue that's arguably long overdue. Musically, there's much to admire throughout, from the sax-and-synths-laden disco stomp of "Mr DJ" and down low disco-funk headiness of "Fascinating", to the seductive sweetness of Pollak's breathy vocal on "Come With Me" and the sun-kissed breeziness of intoxicating closing cut "More Than Words".

  16. Arakatula - "Wake Up Africa" (3:19)
Review: Another work of Soul Jazz curatorial gold: Nigeria Soul Fever is a detailed gatefold trip into one of Nigeria's richest chapters in music. Heavy trade restrictions allowed them to develop their own style without too much US or European influence and the result is an array of national talent who largely remained legends within their own borders. The range is mesmerizing; the sinewy synth and playground vocal Q&A of Benis Cletin's "Get Up & Dance", the ballroom disco soul of Tee Mac's "Living Everyday", the soulful afrofunk folk of Jimmy Sherry's "Nwaeze", the gut-punching power of Arakatula's album finale "Wake Up Africa". This is a treasure trove of unreleased gems that capture a truly unique time.

Review: With so many archival labels putting out compilations of 1970s Nigerian funk and disco, Soundway has decided to change tack. Doing It In Lagos is a primer on the country's lesser-celebrated 1980s boogie scene. According to the superb liner notes, most of the music on show here - and, yes, it's universally brilliant - was created by a younger generation of musicians who wanted to move away from Afrobeat, and further towards an authentically American style electrofunk sound. As a result, many of the tracks featured on Doing It In Lagos - not least Hotline's brilliant opener, Livy Ekemezie's disco-funk slammer "Holiday Action" and Sonny Enang's superb "Don't Stop That Music" - are every bit as special as the American-produced records they were trying to emulate.

Review: For their latest expansive and hugely entertaining release, Cree Records have gathered together killer cuts from their back catalogue that were originally written, produced and released in tropical climes (think West and East Africa, the Caribbean, South America and South East Asia in particular). The included tracks are invariably superb and highlights are plentiful throughout. We're particularly loving Frankie Francis' Sofrito Edit of Embryo's undulating tropical funk jam "Wajang Woman", the buzzing Afro-funk of Versatile's "Let It Out", the humid and percussive jauntiness of "Lena" by Andre Tanker Five, the sizzling soca of Merchant & The Network Riddum Band's "Rub-A-Dub-Soka" and Delroy Wilson's formidably dubbed-out reggae cover of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues".
