ACR:EPA
ACR:EPA (limited red vinyl 12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: 12MUTE 631. Rel: 07 May 21
  1. Wonderland (Jam 6) (5:07)
  2. Keep It Together (Jam 5) (3:42)
  3. Down & Dirty (Jam 2) (5:40)
  4. Feel No Fear (Jam 1) (5:21)
Review: Soon to be followed by two more from the mighty Ratio - ACR:EPC and ACR:EPR - EPA is the opening chapter in a triptych born from nothing. Or at least no fixed plan or specific agenda. A day spent jamming in the studio with close friend of the band and regular vocal collaborator, Denise Johnson, the recordings here and on the pair still to come represent the work they did that day, shortly before the world lost the woman in question forever.

Passing away in July 2020, well before her time, this is ACR paying tribute to another integral part of the Manchester music Factory. From the hypnotic and woozy 'Wonderland', where Donna Summer meets acid jazz, to the more straight-laced disco material - delivered with an edge you'd expect in terms of instrumentation and vocals - EPA is a fitting way to honour her legacy.

Lean On You

  1. Lean On You (feat Dynamite MC) (2:54)
  2. Working On Me (3:21)
Review: Times may change and life may evolve, but the Allergies will always be unashamed party-starters whose records are both pleasingly heavy and instantly accessible. By now, you shouldn't need further proof og their skills in this department, but if you do, the Bristol combo's latest "45" is a lesson is dancefloor-igniting goodness. 'Lean on You' is a live and funk-fuelled as you'd expect, with distinctive flash-fried funk-rock guitar riffs, bustling, interestingly slung breakbeats and a fine lead vocal from Dynamite MC. Over on the flip, 'Working on Me' is a more bluesy, cut-and-paste funk breaks number that's guaranteed to get feet moving out on the dancefloor.

Review: Jasper Verhulst's burning passion for Turkish folk and psychedelia led him to found the Atlin Gun band. Gece is their second album from 2019 and arrives in the same month as their third, Yol. It showcase a real understanding of the dynamics of his chosen soul but laced with contemporary flourishes and plenty of great musicianship that touches son Anatolian rock and folk as well as colourful synths capes and psyched out meanderings. Steamy, bright and brilliant, this is a fine reminder of what makes Atlin Gun so damn irresistible especially on the vocal laced 'Anlatmam Derdimi' which is dripping with cool.

Review: Celebrating 50 years of one of the most definitive fusion records ever made, Now Again present the most fitting remaster Axelrod's critically acclaimed debut album Song Of Innocence has ever had. An immense piece of work that pays homage to William Blake and brought together nodes and notions of rock, classical, funk, psychedelic and boogaloo, this reissue comes straight from the original masters with engineering and consultation from Axelrod's production partner H B Barnum, original keyboardist Don Randi, his widow Terri and producer T-Ray. Still as complex and cosmic and sounding better than ever.

  1. Hard Times (0:30)
  2. Listen To Me (0:30)
Review: Powerful belters from soul supernova Baby Huey. The only solo 45s he cut for Curtom Records before he passed away aged only 26, this was released posthumously and OG copies regularly go for over 200 pounds. Now reissued on Soul Brother, the two sides give you the full fat Huey; "Hard Times" hits with a raw Lee Fields style gravelly, story-telling delivery while "Listen To Me" shows Huey's deft ability to band-lead an all-out rock jam. Raw and emotional, Huey left this world far too soon.

Cat: AT 701. Rel: 06 May 21
  1. Afro-Sega (Tony Allen remix) (4:35)
  2. Fatige (4:31)
Review: Second time around for Afro-Kreole artist Grace Barbe's surprise collaboration with Afrobeat legend Tony Allen, which was first released on seven-inch way back in 2016. Allen handled production and remixing duties on "Afro-Sega", a wonderfully humid and tropical number in which the late drummer's distinctive polyrhythms provide a killer base for Barbe's superb lead vocals and all manner of accompanying musical heat (think undulating funk bass, effects-laden Clavinet riffs and punchy sax). Just as good is flipside "Fatige", an even more colourful and vibrant affair in which the Seychelles Islander explores the tropical sounds of her home archipelago in serious sonic style. Only 160 of these have been pressed in total, so act fast if you want to secure a copy.

  12. If I Ever Fall In Love Again (2:52)
Review: Georgia-born soul singer Nathan Bartell cut a number of obscure deep funk, soul and disco singles in the 1970s and early '80s, most of which are on the wants-list of some of the world's most enthusiastic and knowledgeable record collectors. Athens of the North is therefore doing a good deed by collecting these sought-after "sides" together on an album for the very first time. The self-titled set does a great job of introducing us to Bartell's soulful world via a mixture of righteous funk floor-burners, emotional slow jams, Southern soul numbers, slick boogie numbers and '80s soul treats. In other words, it's a much-needed retrospective of one of underground soul's genuine forgotten talents.

Call Me Answer
  1. Birmingham Traveleers - "Call Me, Answer" (3:47)
  2. Gospel Ambassadors - "This Little Light Of Mine" (2:58)
Review: Having previously championed rare and little-known gospel disco, crate digger Greg Belson has now turned his attention to the world of gospel funk and gospel sound. This must-check "45" boasts two obscure, hard-to-find gems from the British DJ and re-editor's forthcoming compilation, Greg Belson's Divine Funk. The A-side offers a chance to cop Birmingham Traveleers' [sic] ultra-rare, private press cut 'Call Me Answer', where guest vocalist Henry Burton spars with the male harmony group over a flash-fried-mid-tempo funk groove. It's really rather good all told, as is the Gospel Ambassadors' flipside cover of gospel staple 'This Little Light of Mine' - a rolling, breakbeat funk interpretation that's as groovy, righteous and life-affirming as they come.

Review: Black Hole's second release in the Sample Series finds Black Cash & Theo link up for a trio of heart breaking blue-eyed soul sounds, all served up as special remastered edits. 'I Ain't Got The Love' opens with the pained and yearning vocals over aching drum breaks with melancholic strings adding to the emotional turmoil. It's a beautiful tune where 'Ghettos Of The Mind' is a freaky interlude of looped vocals that are haunting and paranoid. 'Hurts So Bad' is a well loved soul gem that emerges on a rousing, heart bleeding vocal from slow, pensive moods to empowering highs and back again.

Side A is his feel-heavy cult instrumental take on Ronnie Laws' disco classic "Always There" while Side B throws us into the heart of his 1979 album Bobo with gutsy raw soul power (and just a few cheeky funk slap bass twangs for good measure) Two stone cold classics together for the first time on 45.

Authentic to its soulful core, the release is perfectly timed as we're all beginning to miss the summer moving into the colder months. It's backed by an equally sunny shakedown version of "Funky Sensation" getting a precision Bombay treatment. Sensational.

Review: Jorun Bombay likes to muck about with all sorts of different beats, but he always does it with real skill and personality. That's made him one Canada's most revered hip hop stars and here he tackles the one and only Parliament. His version of "Knee Deep" with its extra bass weight and shrill synth lines bring the party vibes thanks to the feel good pianos. "Mothership Bonus Beats" on the flip is a late night, slow and sleazy jam to get you in the mood. The squelchy synth bass is to die for, the drawn out horns linger long in the air making it a perfectly steamy cut.

A recent reissue on white vinyl sold out in quick time so now comes another chance to own it, this time on black wax. The original is now an arduous item to find at a decent price, so we thanks the Be With label for having repackaged an essential Afro LP that is a must have for anyone into anything outside a constant beat drum. Review: Athens Of The North is unveiling a whole wealth of new 7"s this month and as usual, each and every one is an essential purchase. This one in particular will resonate with a wide audience thanks to the ubiquity of the source material - Luther Vandross's 'Never Too Much.' There have been many versions over the years but this reggae take from Derrick Cross is special indeed, and an OG will costs basically too much for any sane person. Now a fully legit repress makes it accessible to all once more, and hurrah for that.

It has been hard to find since, sending up its value and of course its desirability and notoriety. But the music stands up with its great rare-funk vibes. The album was recorded at various studios around Hollywood and came with two different sleeve designs. The record has oodles of raw funk on rollers like 'Back Pay' and 'The Cult Theme 'with some ballads also included such as the sweet and tender, Rhodes laced joys of 'Rider.'

Review: Cornish funkateer Daytoner rarely fails to deliver the goods, with his semi-regular seven-inch missives being amongst his most potent releases. He's at it again here, delierving two confirmed party-starting workouts that combine live funk and soul style instrumentation topped off with classic hip-hop acapellas. He begins with 'Life's a Bitch', where fast crew rap flows lifted from a much-loved hip-hop cut ride undulating bass guitar, laidback funk breaks and glistening guitars. He flips the script a little on flipside '(It Ain't) No Good', delivering hip-hop tempo beats, deep bass, luscious electric piano motifs and smart use of one of the most celebrated R&B vocals of the 1990s.

  2. Just An Illusion (3:51)
Review: DJ DSK kicks off another series of Edits Instrumentals volumes here with another pair of his vital cut up and reworked classics. The key to it is the source material - he always knows how to find just the right sort of disco tune or 80s classic to tease apart and rebuild in more robust and dance floor friendly fashion, all with a modern edge. 'Love Thang' is a sultry, low slung disco tune with big strings and funky riffs, while on the reverse, 'Just An Illusion' offers a more squelchy and late night groove for dancing to under a setting sun, maybe.

Review: The relentless edit surgeon that is DJ DSK must have spent the whole of lockdown digging for beats, then taking them to his operating table and setting to work, boucle he has a glut of new Eps out in close proximity. He kicks off here with a huge disco classic in 'Bad Girls' and strips out the vocals, turns up the fun and allows the beats to roll on uninterrupted. On the flip he takes the classic, jittery, 80s INXS gem 'Need You Tonight' and strips out the vocals, makes the beats that bit more crisp and sharp and adds some reverb for extra weight.

DNA Edits Instrumentals Vol 3 finds him hunt down some killer source material and cut it and rework it with his surgeons sonic scalpel. Review: DJ Format has long been a master of cut-and-paste production, most frequently crafting barnstorming funk and hip-hop fuelled club cuts made almost entirely out of samples lifted from dusty old records. He's applied the same techniques on Devil's Workshop, his new instrumental album, but this time he's opted for a stranger selection of source material and an undeniably cinematic feel. While calling it "DJ Shadow's Endtroducing for the 21st century" would be a bit of a stretch, the producer's combination of eccentric musical snippets (you'll find elements repurposed from folk, psychedelic, jazz, rock, spoken word, easy listening, Mod and weird soundtrack records), low-slung basslines and head-nodding hip-hop beats is certainly in the same sonic ballpark. As a result, it's Format's most detailed, considered and impressive work to date.

Review: DJ Soopasoul is back on his own Soopastole Edits label, this time paying tribute to the more great funk sounds and killer drum breaks. The artist is well versed in subtly reworking the classics, bringing them up to date and adding his own unique flavour. He opens this limited 7" with 'Damn Right I Hit Em Up' which rides rough over a tight bass riff, with biggie's raps up top and a big beat pumping the vibe. Flip it over for the instrumental version, which strips it right back to the bare essentials.

Review: Some serious gospel-soul action here from one of the most storied gospel groups in history, the Clark Sisters. The album, which was co-produced by their mother, the legendary choir director Mattie Moss Clark, first landed in US record stores way back in 1980. It's a stunning album all told, with the sisters' incredible vocals rising above backing tracks marked out by interesting arrangements, changes of mood and tone, and plenty of authentic soul and jazz instrumentation. The superb title track and the infections 'Ha-Ya (Eternal Life)' - the latter the subject of a number of re-edits over the years - are the best-known cuts, but other highlights include 'Pure Gold', the epic 'Speak Lord' and 'Salvation Means More To Me'.

  4. Suna Yildizoglu - "I´m Gonna Dance" (unreleased Disco dub) (7:47)
Review: Edit & Dub is an always on fire label that deals in serving up lost mixes of dancefloor classics. The latest helping of goodness kicks off with a pair of tunes from Gino Dentie & The Family. 'Movin On' is real smooth groove train business with noodling chords and big horns while 'Express' gets a little bit deeper. A meandering flute leads the way up top with flat footed kicks making you move. The flip has high speed cosmic disco funk in the form of 'Voodoo Man' and then more loose limbed sunshine on 'I'm Gonna Dance,' a heartwarming cut for sure.

Who's Your Boss
  1. Pearl Farano & The High Lights Of Joy - "Who's Your Boss" (2:53)
  2. Zella Jackson - "Days Are Just Like People" (2:19)
Review: Greg Belson is a world leading gospel collector and DJ who had great success with his Divine Disco series. He continued his vital work with Cultures of Soul on the Devin Funk compilations series and now the label are serving up the many highlights on 7". Here we have
Pearl Farano & The High Lights Of Joy with 'Who's Your Boss', a high speed funk gem with in the pocket drum playing and energetic guitar riffs. The real star of course is the coarse vocal that cannot help but light your fires. On the flip, Zella Jackson's vocal soars next to summery flutes and raw, dense rhythm sections.

  1. September (3:02)
  2. I Love Without A Love (2:15)
Review: Jo Ann Hamilton hailed from Georgia and was brought up on a diet of soul, Motown and r&b. At the tender age of seven she joined the Gospel Choir from the Melton Chappel church and then got into the disco scene. Five decades later she has linked with Kevin Fingier in Buenos Aires, Argentina for this fantastic new 7" that is imbued with classic funk, soul and swing. Opener 'September' is a massive Northern Soul gem that would have slayed back then and still does now. On the flip is the more obscure 'I love Without A Love' which is funky, tropical and infectious.

Review: The late precision edit maestro Ryuhei The Man has taken his scalpel to a couple ,ore jams here and turned out typically high grade, sympathetic but essential edits that rework the tunes into dance floor dynamite. First up is Tusuke Hirdao's 'Early Bird' which is a driving, gliding, smooth as you like jazz-funk gem with knotted bass and expressive live drums. On the flip is the more cosmically minded 'Sonar' with its shimmering xylophone melodies, frenzied drum playing and heart warming chords. Amazing stuff.
