Review: New label Tell Zero Records hits the ground running with a 10" ambient white label that really impresses. There is some lush, slow motion tribalism on the A side that dives deep into the exotic. On the flip, the second beatless journey features some sombre and evocative Olafur Arnalds style piano playing over some haunting field recordings assembled into a captivating collage.

Review: Italy's Antonio Marini last came through on Wicked Bass in 2016, and this new EP for his own On Board Music marks the artist's first release of 2017. We'd been waiting impatiently. Like he often does, Marini appears alongside and strange and wonderful blend of mystical sonics that seem to possess to tangible source and, by that, we mean that the sounds seem to have been made by Mother Earth herself. For example, the subtly acidic harmonies of "Abduction" breathe life into the rest of the sparse beat formula that surrounds them, with the following "Harmony Of The Spheres" similarly crafting a wonderful bed of organic melodies which come together into one glorious bundle of sound. On the B-side, "Alternative Currents" forms a majestic wave of improvised percussion knots and blurry cosmic rays, while "Persec City" jazzes up the mood with some very 'free' movements, and "Seven Transmutations" ties the EP to a close with a distant, opaque cocktail of classic Healing Force vibes. Wonderful stuff, as always.

Review: Rezonal is a vinyl record label run by eastern European talents Krypt & Leonidas. It focuses on releasing music with distinct and forward thinking electronic sounds. Fans of the hypnotic techno sound: from the classic days of Prologue or Zooloft will no doubt be fans of this duo's work and their label. The powerfully hypnotic peak time onslaught of A side cut "Unknown Frequency" calls to mind the work of renowned specialists Deepbass & Ness. On the flip, the droning "Traces" will have you surrendering to the void in no time with its tunneling and strobe lit Finally the slow burning power. of Looking For The Exit carries a Jeff Mills style orchestral arrangement, over a broken beat and is perfect mood lighting for the opening or closing of a set alike.

Review: In late 2016, Lobster Theremin launched their new sub-label: the ambient, drone and experimental electronics offshoot Lobster Sleep Sequence. After label head Jimmy Asquith came across Thet Liturgiske Owasendet's immense ambient epic "Catalina" on Soundcloud, it soon became 'a staple cure to a bout of recent prolonged sleeplessness and mild insomnia that he'd been unable to shake via any other means.' For the label's second release we have Richard Vergez's Night Foundation project, which launched in 2016. Already part of the Lobster network as graphic designer for Raw MT and Hedge Maze's releases, it wasn't long before Asquith soon came across Vergez's new project and decided to release it. Formed of three separate parts, Memory Bells is a mesmerising and evocative body of work.

Review: Copenhagen's Agnes Obel is no newcomer to the enlarged electronic scene thanks to a handsome package of previous releases for the mighty PIAS, an imprint responsible for all sorts of reissues throughout the 2000's and, of course, plenty of electronic crossover which have gone onto establishing new genres and styles. The surprise is that London's Phonica has decided to pick her brain for the sixth instalment of their Special Edition series, a corner of the label reserved for the more cerebral end of the 'house' and 'tech' domain. In fact, the A-side's remix of "Stretch Your Eyes" by Quiet Village is a deep and incandescent trip through sliding percussions and cavernous swells of electronic fuzz, sounding something like Burial and Bjork put together. Fantastic stuff. The 'ambient' mix of the same tune, on the B-side, dissolves the beats into an aqueous haze of melting vocals and hollow waves, offering a delightfully kinetic approach to the usually rhythm-empty take on drone. Lovely.

Review: No one knows who One Day is. No one knows what the title of this EP is called. No one knows what the tracks are called. But we know that this is Office... And everything Baaz's Berlin-based label puts out has a great deal of detail invested in it and always requires attention. This is no exception as the mysterious vibe maestro takes us from warm, jazz-tinged chugging deep house to cascading aquatic ambience that bubbles and pops dreamily via fuzzy, springy downtempo. Who knows who's behind this masterpiece? Maybe One Day we'll find out...

Review: Gravity Graffiti have released some great work in the last year by the likes of Marcello Napoletano, Soichi Terada and Yoshinori Hayashi. It is now the turn of Danish producers Natal Zaks aka Palta and his brother Milan Zaks aka Ti. They head up the Help Recordings imprint. Starting off with the the lo-fi deep house of "Andre Hjem" while the SPCE mix up next is more sci-fi and tribal: really nice this one. On the flip, we've got the tripped out ambient house of "Det Hurtige Track" which is just made for drifting and the EP's standout moment. Finally we get treated to the most uptempo moment on the release with "Gir Meg Hen" it's just a pity it only goes for three minutes as we'd have loved to have heard those funky polyrhythms trance us out a bit longer.

  2. Dimished Feeling (4:57)
  3. Looking Outside (4:14)
Review: Chicago born, Brooklyn based producer Max Ravitz is quite known for his dusty goth(am) house and techno experiments; easily recognised by their brazenly compressed/saturated analogue aesthetic that sound like live jams. It's more of the same on his new offering: A side cut "Learned Behaviour" is the most 'straight-ahead' we've ever heard Ravitz with this tunnelling, hypnotic and absolutely heads down affair that soon evolves via some classic house chord progressions and mad 909 snare theatrics. The bittersweet and melancholic "Diminished Feeling" is more typical of his earlier style on such heralded EPs like his Opal Tapes debut Body Issues: the sound of a lonely Bushwick loft space on a Friday night. The lush and atmospheric "Looking Outside" provides a welcome ambient moment for this fine EP. Yet more fantastic work from him this year, following up the three part epic Several Shades of The Same Color on Ghostly International.

Review: Dream Diary is a label operating out of Brixton that has previously featured the likes of Afriqua, Tom Gillieron and Richie Littler on its roster, and now it's the turn of the head honcho Oslo Roma to serve up some more of that subversive four-to-the-floor business. "Mars Water" is an infectious minimal roller with bass that wraps itself around your cerebellum and pulls you in deeper, while "Bubbles" does the same but without any drums to buffet it along. "How Good Is The Party" is a more experimental affair that deals with off kilter rhythmic fragments and spaced out textures, leaving EP closer "Twotet" to drop a more immediate slice of electro on the situation.

Review: Sacha Khalife, or simply SHCAA, is a multi-talented electronic music producer from Paris. We know him well, however, namely due to an EP that cam out through NYC's Blank Slate back in 2015. Since then, he's put out one more EP through Archipel, but this is the first time we've welcomed him back onto our charts in 2017. Golconde comes through courtesy of the young Sharingtones imprint, and while this is billed as an EP, the release's 11 tracks give the impression of something much more accomplished. Fair enough, each tune is comparatively short to the usual album tracks, but the likes of "Kohinor", a bluesy, laid back slice of exotica, offer some truly deep vibes. Moreover, it's how each tune fits with the next that has got us hooked from the start, where SCHAA chucks in a subtle house blend like it's nothing, making tunes such as "Mimesis" feel like a natural course of events. On the B-side, this curious yet endlessly pleasing blend of acoustic guitars and tropical house waves continues, climaxing with a bottomless pit o minimalistic drones on "Maelstrom", followed by some glitchy IDM vibes on "Kert". Lush.

Review: Blundar is a label shrouded in mystery, although it seems aligned with artists like Lowtec and those orbiting crews like Smallville. The latest transmission on the dusty house imprint comes from STL, whose disheveled sounds is a natural fit for what has come before on Blundar. "Track 1" peers through a thick haze of smoke, exhaling pads and drones and keeping the bass pulsing throughout. The rest of the EP is given over to experimental and ambient tones, with the second track on Side B being an especially arresting piece loaded with melancholic contemplation. It's another strong addition to the Blundar repertoire, and another example of STL's skills and adaptability in the studio.

Review: Mary Anne Hobbs has been waxing lyrical about this sophomore collaborative set from Arovane and Hior Chronik, and it's easy to see why. The album's genius lies in the duo's atmospheric combination of crackling field recordings, lucid electronic instrumentation, and the melancholic poignancy of classic piano motifs. While they're naturally more at home delivering atmospheric, slowly unfurling ambient pieces - and there are plenty scattered across the album - the production pair's more up-tempo efforts are generally equally as impressive. Tracks such as "Lightbeams", 'Perpetum II" and "Eines Klein Lied", where their beautiful music is underpinned by bustling and bubbly machine percussion, are particularly impressive.

Review: The legendary Manuel Gottsching restarted his seminal Ash Ra Tempel project upon invitation to the Supersense Festival of the Ecstatic on August 8, 2015 at the Arts Centre of Melbourne in Australia. He had quite the supporting cast too: not his original bandmates, but current heroes of experimental rock in the form of Ariel Pink (on vocals and bass) and Melbournians Oren Ambarchi of Editions Mego (gong) and Shags Chamberlain on keyboards and synths. It was Gottsching's wife, Ilona who came up with the idea of performing some Ash Ra Tempel classics and that is when the idea for the 'Experience' was born. He decided to perform pieces from the albums 'Schwingungen' and 'Seven Up' (both from 1972) and contacted the aforementioned artists: who much to his surprise were very familiar with his work and happily agreed to the project.

Review: Back in 2015, Ash Ra Tempel co-founder Manuel Gottsching was booked to play a solo live set at Melbourne's Supersense Festival. Instead, he turned up with a trio of musicians - drummer Oren Ambarchi, synth wizard Stags Chamberlain and lo-fo pop hero Ariel Pink on bass and vocals - and performed reinvented versions of tracks from Ash Ra Tempel's first two albums, Schwingungen and Seven Up. This album presents highlights from that performance, of which the third track - a superb, stretched-out medley featuring superb solos from Gotssching and hazy, out-there vocals from Ariel Pink - stands out. Of course, it's all wonderfully evocative in that now familiar Ash Ra Tempel Sound; chiming closer "Schqingungen", a proto-ambient classic re-born, is majestic.

Review: B12's 1993 debut album, Electro-Soma, has long been regarded as one of intelligent dance music's "must-have releases". Offering a decidedly intergalactic blend of otherworldly techno, ambient and deep space electronica, it remains a brilliant piece of work. Here, Warp Records give it the reissue treatment, packaging the peerless original album with a second disc of early B12 rarities and hard-to-find cuts recorded during the same period. There's naturally plenty to admire on this bonus disc, from the shimmering electro bustle of "Transient Pathways" and Motor City futurism of "Debris", to the intoxicating ambient brilliance of "Go With The Hiss". That this material is every bit as good as the tracks included on Electro-Soma is testament to the (then) duo's rarely matched brilliance.

Review: Fresh from the release of a fine EP of braindance-influenced workouts on Analogical Force, mysterious producer Brainwaltzera delivers his second full-length excursion. This time round, the influences are a lot more horizontal in tone, as the sometime Film artist explores the blurred lines between early '90s ambient, IDM, intelligent techno, drowsy trip-hop and deep space electro. It's a heady and intoxicating brew, as inspired by contemporary takes on classic British electronica as Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin. Highlights bubble to the surface with impressive frequency, from the hazy and horizontal beauty of "Poly_Ana Summers" and Pete Namlook style "Take 1" (complete with tape hiss and cyclical, Steve Reich style melodic movements), to the crunchy, skewed beats of "Frikadel (The End Bit)".

Review: Jim Kirby's music under The Caretaker alias has always been vast, bottomless pit of horror psychedelia for fans of all things Lynch-like. Much like the movies of the great cinema director, Kirby's weird and wonderful blends of samples are as inquisitive as they are tenebrous, forever searching for that additional bit of grit amidst the lines. This is the third chapter of the Everywhere At The End Of Time series, out through his excellent History Always Favours The Winners imprint. The breadth of these 16 awkward loops is made up of eerie wind instruments, sounding all too similar to those featuring at the end of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, when Jack Nicholson's character ominously appears in the infamous painting. The Caretaker pushes those samples to their limits, stopping and starting, slowing up and slowing down magnificently, taking on a life of their own. One per customer, so be quick!

  3. Burrata (17:30)
  4. Pad Phet Gob (18:28)
Review: The second album from sound artist duo/couple crys cole and Oren Ambarchi takes us deep down a mysterious romantic rabbit hole over four long form pieces. A smouldering, sensual affair at first, "Call Myself" softly manipulates warm chords before "Francis Debacle" provides a darker, more languid aesthetic, soaked in sweaty, groaning human textures and grainy textures. "Burrata" slips into something a little more comfortable as sweet nothings are transmitted over a weave of dreamy unpredictable arpeggios before "Pad Phet Gob" zooms out for a wider view as the swampy, alien location of this tryst is revealed. Bewildering, charming and constantly revealing more.
