Review: More than just a school concert, 1975's Rocking Grass was a sensation. On one fine estival day, The College Andre-Grasset auditorium overflowed, leaving hundreds spellbound. Registering its impact, Jean-Yves Quesnel and colleagues immortalised the show into a recording, transforming Rocking Grass into Phono Grass.Sessions at College Edouard-Montpetit's studio captured the energy of a shifting musical landscape in Quebec; and pianist Benoit Sarrazin, unknowingly recorded mid-performance, later became a professional musician. The album's original songs, 'Le Roi Muffe' and 'Bright Moments', embodied the era's creative freedom, with the latter later sampled by DJs and featured on Canadian Racer. Originally pressed on a 500-copy run, 1001 est Cremazie become a prized collectible; now it's much more readily available.

Review: Like so many projects, Electric Taal Band has its roots in the pandemic. Specifically, when a box of Punjabi records was found for sale at the Bollywood Music Centre, on Gerrard Street East, in the Little India neighbourhood of Toronto. This inspired a deep dive into a spectrum and school of music that's largely been overlooked by Western ears, and a mission began to try and develop new variations on the era-spanning formula that ran through those random pieces of wax. Electric Taal Band proves how valid the endeavour was. Ten truly transportive tracks that invoke the heat and exoticism of the sub-continent through incredibly immersive, complex and - at times - experimental arrangements, achieved with the assistance of a vintage Radel telemeter and electric Tanpura. Two instruments originally design for practice purposes, here affording an unarguably unique sound you're unlikely to encounter anywhere else.

Review: Japanese jazz quintet (and over the course of their whole career, sextet) Hideo Shiraki Quintet centred on the namesake of the central jazz drummer, whose chops on the drums were matched by few. Review: Studies In A Dying Love is Edmonton-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, arranger, producer, and DJ Aladean Kheroufi's debut full-length album. It finds him crafting soulful, idiosyncratic songs with a melancholic yet optimistic vibe that mix pain and pleasure in musical form. Starting at 17, he toured extensively as a session player, performing with acts like The Velveteins and Marlaena Moore, and opening for artists such as Angel Olsen and Orville Peck, all of which helped him hone his skills. Influenced by Curtis Mayfield and Sunny Ozuna, Kheroufi's minimalist soul sound feels timeless throughout this record which comes after a series of sought-after 7" singles.

Review: Finnish jazz collective Oiro Pena is fronted by the prolific composer and saxophonist Antti Vauhkonen and this new album was recorded in a studio as well as some bedrooms and less salubrious locations around Helsinki, It was recorded in 2022 and mixes up lo-fi jazz, experimental sounds, spiritual overtones and avant-garde musical forms with four vocal tracks featuring Merikukka Kiviharju. As well as original lines, she sings parts from some classic Finnish folk songs. It makes for a powerful and timeless record that comes in heavily limited quantities.

Review: We invite you to relax, sit back, pour a short, stiff drink and sink into some superbly lush and soothing jazz from Peace Flag Ensemble. It is the third album from the collective and one that is more expansive than ever in its pursuit of ambient free-jazz perfection. Things focus on pianist Jon Neher's improvisations. After performing in Germany, Neher realised his piano was often in the background during live shows when it could take a more prominent role. This led to a more melodic and virtuosic approach in which flugelhornist Dalton Lam and saxophonist Paul Gutheil blend beautifully, their playing sounding like an intimate conversation where silence often speaks volumes. Drummer Mike Thievin plays with restrained intricacy, too, while Travis Packer's electric bass adds an adventurous energy.

For them, Memela teams up here with Soweto's Pelican Club house band, whose skilled members add a rich, rhythmic backbone to his intricate guitar lines. Review: Vis-A-Vis released a hugely impressive 13 albums between 1975 and 1982. Both talented studio artists and live musicians, the band was led by vocalist Isaac "Superstar" Yeboah with Sammy Cropper on guitar, Slim Manu on bass and Gybson "Shaolin Kung-Fu" Papra on drums. The We Are Busy Bodies label is in the process of rolling out reissues of plenty of those records and this is one fo the best . A real listening joy, it brings with afro grooves and noodling jazz melodies, richly textured organ and bass work that all help take you to warmer, earthier climes in an instant.
