Conversation EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: HEIST 033. Rel: 19 Sep 18
Deep House
  1. Conversation (7:29)
  2. This Is The Place (5:51)
  3. From The Heart (8:08)
  4. Conversation (Awanto 3 remix) (9:23)
Review: Swiss trio Alma Negra can do no wrong in our eyes, with their recent outing on Lumberjacks in Hell being one of that label's strongest releases to date (which, given its strong track record, is high praise indeed). This four-tracker on Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings is packed full of dancefloor treats, too. Choose between the spacey deep house/heavily percussion Afro-house fusion of title track "Conversation", the hybrid boogie/dreamy deep house bliss of "This Is The Place" and the warm and woozy, percussion-rich deep house loop-funk of B-side opener "From The Heart". Fittingly, "Conversation" is given a going over by fellow percussion enthusiast Awanto 3, whose trippy remix adds a low-slung jazz bassline, wonky vocoder vocals and just the right amount of wayward electronics.

  1. Afrorleans (8:20)
  2. Luanda Dub (7:49)
  3. Endless Summer (6:36)
  4. Endless Summer (Soulphiction remix) (5:17)
Review: To date, Swiss trio Alma Negra has carved a successful niche as makers of heavily percussive 12" singles that look to the rhythms of Africa for inspiration. This outing for Heist Recordings draws on many similar influences, but shuffles further towards original production than their rework style back catalogue. Opener "Afrorleans" is a jaunty trip into shuffling Afro-house territory in the company of a cabal of Cajun musicians, while "Luanda Dub" is a booming, bass heavy late night trip full of swirling vocal samples and densely layered drum hits. Flip to the B-side for the party-starting Afro-disco/deep house fusion of standout "Endless Summer" and a cracking Soulphiction remix of the same track that pushes a rubbery disco bassline to the fore to devastating effect.

  1. The Break Up
  2. The Make Up
Review: After a break through 2012 with EPs on Dirt Crew, Murmur and Freerange, Detroit Swindle take a second bite out of their 2013 cherry with the Break Up to Make Up EP on new label Heist. The A-side is "The Break Up", a sidechaning rollercoaster of sampled, looped and filtered vocals that bounce of bit-staccato Rhodes, silky hats and tight drums. On the B-side is a deeper "The Break Up" featuring breathy, feminine vocals similar to Australian and Third Strike act The Tortoise. Deep and flowing house music for the dancefloor.

  8. Ex Machina
  9. Cut U Loose
  10. Lucky Number 13
Review: If your fame is built on delivering rock solid dancefloor cuts, should your subsequent albums stick to the same approach or mix it up a little? It's a conundrum that many artists have struggled with over the years. Smartly, Detroit Swindle has decided to hedge their bets with High Life following 2014's Boxed Out. As full length albums go, it's a bit of a peach, and sees the acclaimed Dutch duo flit between sensuous, home-listening fare, jaunty, instrumental-laden workouts (see the cheery, smoky pop-soul of Tom Misch hook-up "Yes, No, Maybe" and Afro-fired bounce of "Call of the Wild" featuring fellow Dutch combo Jungle By Night) and tried-and-tasty club tracks (Seven Davis Jr collaboration "Flavourism", the driving disco-house of "Freeqy Polly" and "Cut U Loose").

  1. Flavourism (5:52)

  3. Flavourism (Pepe Bradock Bittersweet mix) (6:28)
  4. Flavourism (Pepe Bradock Urgent Spookapella) (6:01)
Review: Unstoppable Dutch duo Detroit Swindle are back on their own Heist imprint, with some sensual deep house in the form of "Flavourism" which is the first single lifted from their forthcoming album entitled High Life. Featuring the smooth as silk vocals of the inimitable Seven Davis Jr, the release is accompanied by some fine remixes too: the sexy late night mood lighting of John Barera & Will Martin's Boomerang dub does the job fairly well, but let's not ignore the true highlight here - not one but two renditions by the mighty Pepe Bradock. The Atavisme boss and all round hero of the French house scene delivers the depe dan and dusty Bittersweet mix, in addition to a handy Urgent Spookapella.

The Premise EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: HEIST 034. Rel: 31 Oct 18
Deep House
  1. The Premise (6:21)
  2. Bad Habit (7:12)
  3. Love 4:2 (9:20)
  4. Love 4:2 (DJ Nature remix) (6:45)
Review: Detroit Swindle's Heist imprint now presents Kassian, the brainchild of Joe Danvers-McCabe (Danvers) and Warren Cummings (Warren Xclnce). Both are regulars in the underground and wider reaching London scenes, with Warren being a co-founder of Abouttoblow and a previous studio producer at Worldwide FM, while Joe came through DJing and running nights in the eclectic world of Bristol nightlife before moving to London. The Premise EP features the deep and sulty late night groove of the title track - a perfect match for the Amsterdam based imprint, while "Bad Habit" goes for an energetic disco- acid vibe. Finally "Love 4:2" was decent enough in its original form, but the man DJ Nature works his magic as always by taking the track down even deeper and more emotive territory.

  4. Max Graef & Andy Hart - "Jungle" (Nachtbraker remix)
  5. Frits Wentink - "Schrewd" (The Organ Grinder remix)
Review: This deluxe 12" and 10" package is the first in what Detroit Swindle promise will be an annual occurrence - a "family remix EP", where members of the Heist Recordings roster rework label releases from the previous 12 months. It's a neat idea, and one that's undoubtedly resulted in some killer material. The Organ Grinder's surging, heavily percussive rework of Frits Wentik's "Schrewd" is particularly heavy, though it is Max Graef's loose, soulful, groovy and sample-heavy reinterpretation of Detroit Swindle's "The Break Up" is probably the standout. That said, there's plenty to cheer elsewhere, not least Nachtbraker's cowbell-laden, acid house-meets-nu-disco version of Max Graef and Andy Hart's "Jungle".

Late Night Studio Moves EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")

  1. Late Night Studio Moves (9:27)
  2. You Treat Me Like A Fool (6:44)
  3. Jazz Kids (6:55)
  4. Late Night Studio Moves (The Mole MMD mix) (7:12)
Review: Over the years, Pitto has done a fine job in balancing his love of uneasy, left-of-centre techno-pop with delivering floor-friendly 12" singles that draw greater influence from late night European clubbing. Late Night Studio Moves, which marks his return after a two-year absence, is as melodic and ear pleasing as you'd expect, but also closer to deep house than many of his previous EPs. Highlights abound, from the exotic, Afro-fired, percussion-and-chant-rich piano house brilliance of opener "Late Night Studio Moves", to the hazy deepness of "You Treat Me Like a Fool" and the '89 Chicago warehouse pump of "Jazz Kids". There's a tasty bonus, too, in the shape of the Mole's woozy, dreamy and effortlessly tactile dream house revision of "Late Night Studio Moves".
