Review: While their regular albums are rather good, we've always had a soft spot for Karate Boogaloo's KB Mixtape series, where the Melbourne-based "cinematic funk" outfit delivers new interpretations of tracks that have been sampled on both cult and well-known hip-hop records. Volume three begins with a cheeky, organ-heavy take on 'Brothers Gonna Work It Out', but elsewhere they deliver loose, funk-fuelled covers of tracks originally composed for films and TV shows. The results are almost impeccable, with highlights including a dubby, laidback take on the theme song from 'Diamonds Are Forever', a heavy and fittingly creepy version of the main title theme from 'The Shining', and a surprisingly jazzy interpretation of Dolly Parton sing-along '9 to 5'.

Review: Since their birth in 2014 as an instrumental offshoot of Saskwatch, Let Your Hair Down has been a staple of the Melbourne soul scene without recording or releasing much music. Now boasting a new seven-piece line-up that contains members of fellow Victorian bands Karate Boogaloo and Surprise Chef, the band has finally got round to recording a long-promised second album. In keeping with their trademark sound, the set is an all-instrumental affair that casually joins the dots between cinematic soul, library funk, lounge and downtempo grooves. The arrangements are complex, the vibes laid back and the musicianship exemplary. In other words, it's another soon to be in demand album from the College of Knowledge crew.
