Jumping Off
Cat: JAL 345V. Rel: 03 Dec 20
  1. Jumping Off (3:17)
  2. Gather Around (3:23)
Review: Bristolian funkateers and confirmed party-rockers the Allergies have enjoyed a pretty prosperous 2020, with the release of their fourth studio album being followed by a string of singles - a number of which ending up riding high in the NACC US college radio sharts. 'Jumping Off', their final single of the year, is another intensely upbeat, club-ready affair, with regular mic man Andy Cooper (of Ugly Duckling fame) and a crew of female backing vocalists riding a bombastic, party-igniting groove that sits somewhere between hip-hop and deep funk. Flipside 'Gather Around', a bluesy, gospel-tinged stomper full of heady Hammond licks, jazzy bass and infectious verse vocals, is equally as potent.

  2. Wilson D N - "Kiss Him Goodbye" (2:18)
Review: The first Premier League Pressing features one of the best known tracks in popular culture. The Belmont Shadows beef up an acapella version of 'Kiss Him Goodbye' where you'll hear the drummer get wicked over cuts and beats from one of the top DJs of the west coast. On the flip, we have a tough breakbeat-heavy Latin version by Wilson D N that has never been on a 45.

  1. Raw (4:10)
  2. Raw (instrumental) (3:39)
Review: One of the baddest to ever do it, American Big Daddy Kane has an arsenal of gems in his back cat. This one came in 1987 and is one of his many classic tracks, now available on Prism Records. It's a perfect old school sound complete with mad DJ scratches, squealing horn sounds and dusty breaks for the b-boys. The rap work is impassioned, with articulate delivery hitting hard. Flip it over and you will be treated to a never before released instrumental that is also well worth adding to the collection.

Try Counting Sheep (reissue)

  1. Try Counting Sheep (Caveman Funky Organ/short mix) (3:47)
  2. Try Counting Sheep (original Sheep LP mix) (4:24)
Review: Mr Bongo is back with more stone cold hip-hop. This one comes from 1991 and is a reissue of a UK only 7" from Black Sheep. The single was always a curio and remained in the shadows of the more catchy and commercially successful 'The Choice is Yours' but it does have a great hook and tumble-down charm to the production. Dres is the MC bringing the character and plenty of carefully dug out samples make this one standout above many of its peers. An original copy of this will set you back a fancy few quid so when you also add in the break fuelled remix on the flip you have an essential little pick up.

Hot Lovin'
Cat: DBS 1012. Rel: 12 Oct 20
  1. Hot Lovin' (Don't Stop, Don't Quit) (3:39)
  2. Shack Attack (3:20)
Review: More from the cheeky scamps behind the Disco Bits label, an imprint whose releases regularly blur the boundaries between re-editing, re-making and remixing. Here they welcome back imprint regulars Cannon & Mirrorball (we laughed, at least), who once again serve up two guaranteed disco floor-slayers. A-side 'Hot Lovin (Don't Stop, Don't Quit)' sits somewhere between disco-house and hip-house, with excitement-building raps lifted from vintage hip-hop cuts sitting atop a non-stop beat crafted from tooled-up elements from a celebratory disco favourite. As the title suggests, 'Shack Attack' cheekily blends elements from Banbarra classic 'Shack Up' and B-52s hit 'Love Shack', adding some other choice samples to create a tidy, well-made mash-up that sounds tailor-made for disco dancefloors.

Review: After making a big splash with the first release back in June, the Edits label is back with another hard hitting 7" that is designed to blow up ay dance floor. Once again it comes from Casual Connection. 'Hip Hop Drank' is immediately recognisable as the bassline is currently doing the rounds on a TV advert. Here it's overlaid with some sleazy raps and raw, deep cut drums. ON the flip it's 'Humble Hop Hop' which mashes together two more big and iconic beats and raps into something even more powerful than the original.

Cat: ORIGU 45 013. Rel: 20 Oct 20
  1. The Man (3:22)
  2. Fly Tonite (3:26)
Review: Stetasonic was a short lived American hip-hop group who managed to put out three strong albums in their short time together. It was a remix of their 'Talking All That Jazz' by Dimitri From Paris that resurrected interest in the group in 1998 and now this 7" continues to shine a light on the often forgotten group. '(Now Ya'll Givin' Up) Love' is a hard hitting beat with a tense atmosphere. The crashing hits and reverberating drums break only for big stabs to light up the groove, all the while the biting rhymes keep on coming. An a cappella is provide don the flip for more adventurous DJs.

Review: Qu'ran Goodman, Taji Goodman and Tarik Dawson are Da Youngsta's, a hardcore hip hop outfit active from 1992 and central to the genre's development through the nineties, most often on EastWest Records America. 'Be Great' is a brand new 2020 single that has lush piano work bringing warmth and soul, and slow motion, gently rotating and spacious drums sinking you into a stoned groove. The rhymes are slowed and stretched to match and the whole tune has an aspirational mood that permeates you're being. 'Be Great 2' is continuation that seals the deal.

Review: DJ DSK is back with volume 5 of his DNA Edits series i the same month that he links with his All Stars for another red hot 7". This one kick off with a 90s style rework of 'That's the Way Love Goes' by J Jackson which has replayed bass and drums straight from the golden era. Review: Handsome Boy Modeling School is an American duo made up of hip-hop beatmakers Dan the Automator of Gorillaz association and rince Paul from projects with Stetsasonic, De La Soul and Gravediggaz. Dan the Automator assumes his DJ Octagon Palais for the opera here - a hard hitting and deep cut rap with plenty of manic DJ scratching and big stabs. Handsome Boy Modelling School then link up for the flip side 'Holy Calamity' which is another floor filler with bold brass and mad scratching. Both tunes hark back to a golden era of rap and will get any floor pumping.

Review: Currently in the throes of a serious reissue mission, bringing many of his old funklets back to life on wax, Jalapeno mainstay Danny Soopasoul lets these very cheeky takes on Mr Illmatic out into the ether. Side-A is pure laid back west coast vibery while the B lays Nas's famous bars down over a Bill Conti-style horn arrangement where the feel of a montage and a triumphant stair-run is imminent. Review: What could be more exciting for the funk lover in your life (whether that's you or someone else) than an insanely limited-edition, festively themed "45" from famously reliable party-starter DJ Tron and his regular vocalist Luana? If that sets your bells jingling (sorry), we'd suggest diving straight into A-side 'Merry Christmas', a veritable yuletide feast of boisterous drum-breaks, gravelly guitar riffs, rising horns and sleigh bells, all topped off by a few choice samples and another superb lead vocal from Luana. The pair continue on a similar tip on flipside 'Santa's Coming', a funk-breaks masterclass dedicated to the jolly, chimney-bothering present delivery guy. Review: This exclusive Record Store Day 2020 7" pairs two hit singles from Detroit rapper Eminem's highly acclaimed Slim Shady LP in limited quantities. The a-side offers up one of his most iconic singles, one that truly helped establish his confrontational lyrics and loose lipped 8-mile style. Review: Mr Bongo are in the midst of a series of Eric B & Rakim reissues and next up on a limited 7" is 'I Ain't No Joke' backed with 'Eric B Is On The Cut.' The a-side was a first single from the legendary pair's debut studio album Paid In Full and was always one of its most monumental moments. Rakim's rhymes grab you from the off and don't let you go, with the man himself saying it took four days to get this one right. Samples of Dexter Wansel and The J.B's really make it pop. Going down a deeper path, with big DJ scratches, reversed stabs and an even more old school flavour, 'Eric B Is On The Cut' is another vital jam.

It's still a landmark album all these years later and Mr Bongo know that, so serve up a special 7" with one of its most well known tunes, 'I Know You Got Soul.' The High & Mighty duo who hailed from Phillie and were active in the nineties. Their 'Dirty Decibels' is a sleazy joint with prying bass and sliding drums that get under your skin. Review: Drop 6 is the latest in an ongoing mix series that finds British rapper Little Simz flexing her skills over an extended release. It's a fine work that puts her lucid vocal flow front and centre. She muses on meditation, self-reliance and occasionally stores a moment to big up herself. It has an alluring vibe, gloomy in places, empowering in others, and often feels as lonely as lockdown will have been for many. The artist has said before she pushed through something of a crisis to get the record finished and that always shines through, but only to the betterment of the results.

But before that, the pair actually self-released their debut on Actual Records, and it went on to become a hard to find, much in demand 12". The greatness that was to come was hinted at on the music with superbly concise raps and tight production that made for two faultless singles. 'Think' takes plenty of well known samples but makes them sound fresh and 'Atom' does the same, with humour, bragging and positivity all colouring the bars.

Review: Nas's 2002 album God's Sun is not his most iconic, but it still spawned some essential singles Chief amongst them is 'Made You Look', built around samples from Incredible Bongo Band's 'Apache.' The tune really established him in his ongoing battle with Jay Z and like all his work it displays intricate lyricism and old school boom bap beats. The free-associative rhymes touch on an array of themes that cover a wide span from hype to legacy, partying and chest beating self congratulation. The flip includes an instrumental that is not explicit like the original, so lacks some of the things that make it so raw.

French producer Bruno 'Patchworks' Hovart and Australian born, NYC-based rapper and poet Nelson Dialect both met years ago and after long discussing plans to work together, they finally made it happen. Their metal love of early 90s hip hop brought them together and sure shines through here with a luxuriant sound that rolls deep. 2. How Superstitious (instrumental mix) (4:14)
Review: Limited white vinyl repress.DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip-hop classic 'How High' atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie's party-starting floor-heater 'Superstition'. It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonder-ful jam.

Review: Terry Slingbaum was once a little-known ghost writer and session musician. Now, thanks to this all-star debut EP, he's now one of the most talked-about debutant artists on the planet. The Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist has pulled out all the stops on his first EP, opening proceedings with a startling chunk of creepy, unsettling, jazz-flecked electronica that boasts sublime lead vocals from Erykah Badu and D'Angelo ('Rehoove'). The track that follows, 'Strangers', is fronted by FKA Twigs and boasts a brilliant mixture of deep, languid instrumentation, jazzy guitars and horizontal trip-hop beats, while B-side 'Morphine' is otherworldly opiate soul featuring great vocal turns from Damon Albarn, Bilal and Syd. It's a genuinely surprising EP for sure, but also borderline brilliant. Don't sleep!

Here the track is given a 2020 makeover courtesy of hired hands DJ Spinna and Jazz Spastiks. Spinna naturally opts for a distinctively "Golden era" vibe, laying the Motor City crew's raps over a relaxed, head-nodding beat rich in jazzy double bass samples, crunchy snares and woozy electric piano chords. The jazz Spastiks up the tempo on their flipside version, delivering a revision that's closer in tone to Slum Village's original while offering all manner of subtle differences and dancefloor-focused touches.

'De La Smoove' is a simple idea that has been expertly executed. Subtitled 'Lesson 1', it sees Smoove stitch together snatches of tracks sampled by De La Soul (or more specifically, Prince Paul) on the peerless Three Feet High and Rising album, throwing in all manner of well-known vocal snippets previously used by Steinski and others. He flips the script on B-side 'Hall & Soul', sneakily blending elements of De La Soul classic 'Say No Go' with one of the tracks that it sampled, blue-eyed soul favourite 'I Can't Go For That'.

  1. Give The Drummer Some (3:46)
  2. Moe Luv's Theme (2:21)
Review: This Record Store Day exclusive captures a time when Ultramagnetic MC's where at their most polished thank to the production of the late Paul C. Opening up is 'Give the Drummer Some' which snatches at all manner of different inspirations from James Brown to the Dee Felice Trio and reworks them into new forms. The tune has a real momentum and wicked flow that includes endlessly quotable lyrics, one of which was famously nabbed by The Prodigy for 'Smack My Bitch Up.' Reverse the red 7" and find 'Moe Luv's Theme', where Kool Keith goes straight to the point with some next level MC work.

Review: After the more energetic sound of his Every Path Leads Back Home EP, fans should expect more of a laidback sound on this follow up from Vision of 1994. As his moniker suggest, the reference points are more trip-hop, downtempo, IDM and jungle. Then full LP has two tunes and a pair of remixes and this teaser 12" on Harmless Youth offers up four newbies. Says the artist, "Every Path Leads Back Home was more about going back to my hometown Klatovy, meanwhile this album is more about memories from the times I had growing up there."

Review: He may now be a bona-fide global celebrity with a string of books, TV shows and film appearances to his name, but Action Bronson remains a fine rapper - even if we don't hear those skills as much as we once did. If you still need convincing, check out Only For Dolphins, his first album on two years. His love of trash talking, tall tales and classic boom-bap style flows has not changed, but his subject matter is more varied. The beats he raps over have evolved significantly, too. Over the course of the album, there are fewer bog-standard "golden era" type backing tracks; instead, you'll find killer beats that offer nods towards Brazilian samba and MPB, reggae, smoky jazz and Latin music.
