INC
INC (7" repress)
Cat: COMBO 004. Rel: 07 Oct 21
  1. INC (Big Mac edit) (4:08)
  2. SNL (Big Mac edit) (4:07)
Review: Bootleg remix specialist Big Mac is back! Having previously reworked cuts by Nas, Jay-J and Ol' Dirty bastard, amongst others, he's now turned his attention to two classic cuts from Masta Ace's early '90s rap crew, Masta Ace Incorporated. On side A, he subtly breathes new life into breezy boom-bap classic 'The INC Ride', tightening things up while allowing the original beats, samples and crew vocals a chance to breathe. He takes a similar approach on his flipside re-edit of 'Saturday Night Live', once again focusing on the original's Bobbi Humphrey and Melvin Bliss-sampling groove. Tasteful edits of 1990s hip-hop classics: what's not to like?

  1. Yuletide Throwdown (Cut Chemist remix) (4:50)
  2. Yuletide Throwdown (Cut Chemist radio edit) (4:46)
  3. Yuletide Throwdown (3:32)
Review: RECOMMENDED
"Hahahahahahaha, everybody, check it out. It's that time of year, get ready to funk it up. Fly girls, fly guys, punk rockers, natty dreads... It ain't the wack, for a definite fact - it's Christmas, Jack." Cue Debbie Harry quizzing Fab 5 Freddy on whether he's actually St. Nicholas because she's never seen Santa Claus wearing sunglasses. Suffice to say, fun seasonal breaks this is, serious retro hip hop it ain't. Originally recorded in 1981, 'Yuletide Throwdown' was only released on a special Flexi-disc given away with now-defunct UK music magazine Flexipop the same year. Skip forward four decades and the tracks was 'rediscovered' by Blondie in the archives, and has now been selected for a forthcoming boxset slated to land next year. In the meantime, the single version - along with Cut Chemist remix - is arriving in good time for the forthcoming festivities. Think Christmas-related rhymes set to the classic track 'Rapture' and you're pretty much there.

Popcorn
Popcorn (7")
Cat: AE 045. Rel: 23 Nov 21
  1. Popcorn (3:00)
  2. Pieces Will Align (3:34)
Review: Chrome+ (Chrome Plus) is a project name up of four men and featuring Chrome (who provides the super rhymes) DJ Super JB (who is responsible for the beats and cuts) as well as Phil Critten (on guitar and adding some backing vocals) and Tom Hanna (on bass). They have put together a debut album that will be out soon on this label but before then comes 'Popcorn,' a fine lead single. It gives a great idea of what to expect from the album with plenty of ducking and diving old-school hip hop beats, funky bass and some mad scratching as turbo-charged rhymes come up top. 'Pieces Will Align' then slows it down and offers a more deep-cut sound.

Lifestyle
  1. Lifestyle (Donut mix) (3:26)
  2. Lifestyle (Serious mix) (3:31)
Review: Following their first boom-bap flavoured collaboration with Crimson Alchemist, last year's 'Storytelling', Diess Productions regulars Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer once again join forces with the underground MC for a similarly retro-futurist hip-hop throwdown. Crimson Alchemist's Q-Tip-esque rap sounds superb on both versions, both of which boast fat, toe-tapping beats and tons of nods towards Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer's turntablist roots. The A-side 'Donut Mix' is the slightly bouncier of the two takes, with tidy organ motifs and sweeping synth-strings, while the flipside 'Serious Mix' revolves around some killer horn samples and a descending bassline.

Nobody Can Be Nu
Cat: BBR 050. Rel: 05 Nov 21
  1. Nobody Can Be Nu (Disco Rap edit) (5:00)
  2. Thank You For Letting Me House The Joint (Funk Rap edit) (4:59)
Review: Aussie DJ Bacon runs his very own DJ, edits, mixes, and label operation as a one-man production line. With over 25 years of experience under his belt, this living, breathing musical conveyor belt is responsible for a smattering of old school hip hop, funk, b-boy and rock re-edits, most of which are cut to vinyl in quick bursts. This time, the former Queensland DMC champion spews forth a charming pair of edits on limited red, 7" vinyl. The first is a juddering version of The Mossie's 'Nobody Can Be You But You', with its new title executing a careful pun on the genre name, nu-disco. On the B is a titular nod to Omar S, in a downbeat dub of Sly And The Family Stone's 'Thank You'.

Cat: SSR 210 RE. Rel: 06 Oct 21
  1. Funky Hot Grits (part 2) (3:48)
  2. Hot Grits Beats (2:45)
Review: Serial party starter Soopasoul raises the Rufus with this flighty take on this gutsy 77 classic. Splicing the vocals down to the nitty gritty (excuse us) so it's a bare naked call and response over some well polished breaks, Soopasoul's added a whole new lease of dancefloor energy. Flip for even more stripped back beat track. Hot.

Cat: PSR 003. Rel: 15 Oct 21
  1. DJ Zimmie - "Butter Pecan Ricans" (2:26)
  2. Double A - "Dr Jawn" (3:39)
Review: New release from Private stock is a double dose of boom bap funk! On Side A, DJ Zimmie recreates an iconic party break with all the OG elements. On Side B, Double A took a super funky classic and somehow added even more funk.

HOLE 003
Cat: HOLE 003. Rel: 20 Oct 21
  1. Drunkenstein - "Super Tuff Killer Tune" (4:18)
  2. Sunz Of Man - "Natural High" (Drunkenstein remix) (4:14)
Review: The Hole In One label follows up its good early work with a third vital 7", this time in the form of a split between Drunkenstein and Suns of Man. The former goes first on 'Super Tuff Killer Tune' which is a spaced out, downbeat exploration of deep space with nice chord work and crisp hits. It's cinematic and atmospheric in equal measure and then on the flip, Drunkenstein remixes Sunz Of Man's 'Natural High.' The bristling beat work and splashy cymbals keep a cool vibe while the hard hitting verses add an extra edge. These are two very different sides of vinyl, but both hit a super sweet spot.

Eric B For President (reissue)
Cat: KU 07051. Rel: 26 Nov 21
  1. Eric B Is President (4:35)
  2. My Melody (4:35)
Review: Eric B & Rakim remain two of hip hop's most love characters. Their wordplay and beat making was second to none back inter prime and has barely been bettered since. For that reason reissue slick this will always be in hot demand. This one focuses on the pair's 'Eric B For President,' a golden era great from 1986 that now comes on 7" after being an elusive find for hip hop heads for many years. This particular tune was Rakim at his most raw and direct best. The rap hero lay down the foundation here of what he would build his whole career on.

  1. Fat Joe - "Bronx Tale" (feat KRS One) (3:53)
  2. Sammy Nestico - "Shoreline Drive" (3:26)
Review: 5 Borough Breaks always serves up the working DJ with the sort of vital tools they need to get beat loving floors jacked up and moving. Here a load more iconic of the ages are chawed up and spat out on a new two track 7 " that features none other than legendary MC KRS One as well as American champ Fat Joe and Sammy Nestico. 'Bronx Tale' goes first with a nice laid back beat, funky bass and some edgy breaks that build a vibe while the KRS One rhymes come hard. Flip it over for 'Shoreline Drive' which is a soul led tune with soaring wind sounds, big cinematic drama and a hint of 60s style.

Review: Following the success of her debut album Man Made this year, here's a reissue of London artist Aria Wells aka Greentea Peng's Rising EP from back in 2019 on Different. She worked with different producers on this one such as Fred Cox, Kiko, Samo and Earbuds who lent their various talents. Peng's soothing vocal delivery is accompanied perfectly by hypnotic polyrhythms on songs like 'Risin', the blunted urban blues of 'Inna City', and the broken beat neo-soul of 'Liberation' being just some highlights on this terrific EP.

  4. Canopic Jar (acappella) (3:58)
Review: Brainfeeder serves up this new 12" from Hiatus Kaiyote which finds them diving ever deeper into their own idiosyncratic world of jazzy electronics and expansive grooves. The Australian funk outfit has been nominated twice for a Grammy and their Mood Valiant album was critically acclaimed by all. The pick of this limited green vinyl is the title track 'Canopic Jar' with its lurching beats, twisted guitars and stained lead vocal. It comes as an instrumental and an Capella while the opener 'Journey To The Crystal Tomb' is a short but sweet passage of haunting ambient.

Where My Homiez? (Come Around My Way) (reissue)
  1. Where My Homiez? (Come Around My Way) (7" edit) (4:29)
  2. Where My Homiez? (Come Around My Way) (7" edit - dub mix) (4:29)
Review: 'Creep Wit' Me' was the debut album by East Coast hip hop duo Ill Al Skratch. The production is as slow and smooth as you like from The LG Experience and LoRider, with party rhymes finishing it off in irresistible style. For that reason it was one of the group's most successful singles and the lead off their album of the same name, which peaked at number 137 on the Billboard 200. The tune samples 'Overnight Sensation' by Avalance and 'Deep Cover' by Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg and is included both in original form as well as a slick 7" edit dub mix. One for those cosy late night sessions for sure.

  1. Mowdee (5:47)
  2. I Gotta Feelin' (main mix) (5:47)
  3. I Gotta Feelin' (dub mix) (5:33)
Review: Squinzano's BUD Records is back in action with their new black series, which will explore more "housey" styles. It is produced once again by label staple Kosmiko (a veteran DJ and vinyl collector) alongside Stefano Sisinni aka Jellyfish. They do their very best impression of the Motor City icon Moodymann on the deep joint 'Mowdee' on the A side, but turn over and you've got two versions of the sleazy jam "I Gotta Feelin'. The main mix is complemented by its powerful preacher vocal, while the dub mix is more of a heads down affair that lets that DJ Skull sample and velvety Rhodes keys really shine through in the mix.

Through It All
Cat: BCR 099. Rel: 19 Nov 21
  1. Through It All (3:29)
  2. Under The Sun (3:24)
Review: Five years after her last album on the Big Crown label, Lady Wray is soon to serve up a follow up in the form of Piece of Me. That arrives in January next year and is proceeded by this taster 7" featuring two singles from it. They showcase Wray's take on classic soul: her vocals do plenty of heavy lifting, and the instrumental funk all around her is steeped in the classic traditions, but it all comes with an extra raw edge, an urgency and crispness that brings it right up to date. 'Through It All' is a confessional that is powered by tight drums, where 'Under The Sun' is a more blissed out vibe.

Cat: FCDR 004. Rel: 22 Nov 21
  1. Lakim - "I'm Rick James Bitch" (3:05)
  2. Boombaptist - "Jerry Mane" (2:42)
Review: Rakim and Boombaptist join forces for this turbo-charged cut and paste job. The two short but sweet tracks on this little 7" are packed with eons of hip hop and b-boy history, all chopped up, spliced and diced into fragments that you will have plenty of fun pulling apart. First up is 'I'm Rick James Bitch'with planning bass, crisp boom bap drums and iconic vocal samples the on the flip is 'Jerry Mane' which is slightly less raw and a little more soulful and outward looking. Both are big tools for big reactions on the floor.

Review: He may not have achieved the same acclaim and status as his fellow West Coast native Thundercat, but Mychaal Fisher AKA MMYYKK looks set to follow in his footsteps. His genre-bending music, as showcased on this brilliant Rhythm Section International debut, draws on a similar pool of influences - think Prince style purple funk, jazz, hip-hop, R&B and classic electrofunk - while also upping the soul factor to dizzyingly high levels. The results speak for themselves, with Fisher - in cahoots with a wealth of collaborators from around the world - remaining front and centre throughput thanks to his own emotive lyrics and smooth-as-butter lead vocals. In other words, it's an EP you need in your life right now.

Lapdance (limited 7")
Cat: TNT 003. Rel: 05 Nov 21
  1. Lapdance (3:30)
  2. RunTo The Sun (3:59)
Review: It's time for a third drop from the TNT Rap Classics label, and this time they focus on an early 2000s hip hop gem from Nerd. Led by ageless front man Pharrell, they served up plenty of killer, catchy and hooky joints and two of them make the cut here. There are the gritty, sleazy sounds and grinding beats of 'Lapdance' with its iconic riffs and rhymes, and the more sunny and summery 'RunTo The Sun' which has woody breaks, natty chords and some smooth vocals from Pharrell himself. Two bombs for sure.

All Rapped Up
All Rapped Up (limited clear vinyl 7")
Cat: HDR 003. Rel: 01 Nov 21
  1. All Rapped Up (radio version) (4:25)
  2. Smoke Season (extended version) (5:46)
Review: This clear vinyl "45" dips into the small but perfectly formed mid '90s catalogue of Oakland duo Rappin' Ron and Ant Diddly Dog, whose take on gangsta rap was more laidback and melodfious than some of their contemporaries. 'All Rapped Up', which first surfaced as the pair's debut single in 1994, combines a luscious, laidback, jazz-funk-sampling boom-bap beat with typically descriptive, entertaining lyrics detailing life on the streets of the pair's home city. Over on the reverse you'll find original flipside 'Smoke Season', here presented in extended form. Lyrically it covers similar territory, but musically it's an unashamed G-funk workout full of rubbery bass, smooth synths and P-funk influenced motifs.

  6. The Rebel - "Body Rockin'" (Ice One Hip Hop Room remix - instrumental) (3:44)
Review: Danno is the renegade master of Roman hip-hop and is part of the pioneering underground crew Colle Der Fomento. The Rebels instrumentals form the basis of his rhymes here while New York hip hop duo The Good People also appear on track two, 'Body Rockin', to bring some classic US styles to this package. Their tune is then remixed by another Italian hip hop legend on Ice One. This then is a package that brings together two different worlds, one more well known than the other for its hip hop, but the Italian team really do represent here and the whole thing fits together like two sides of the same NYC subway line.

  1. On The One (feat Mr Auden Allen & Renegade Brass Band) (3:25)
  2. Nagu (3:37)
Review: Rising star Sam Redmore has a debut album on the way. That will be one to look out for in 2022, but first he's treating us to a handful of teaser singles. The latest, 'On The One', is genuinely special. Built around a skittish, Tony Allen style drum-beat and complimentary horns from the fantastic Renegade Jazz Brass Band, it's a 21st century update of the Fela Kuti Afrobeat sound topped off with rapped lead vocals from Mr Auden Allen. He continues the party-starting vibe on flipside 'Nagu', a genuinely heavy, full throttle fusion of Afrobeat and house laden with swooping strings, sun-bright funk guitar licks and weighty bass. It isn't quite as cultured as the A-side, but it's still a rock-solid peak-time bomb.

A-sider 'Part Of It' (feat Kelz) is a classic bit of boom-bap with raw rhymes and punchy drum work cut up with great samples and eerie chords. 'DEF= Defeat Evil Fools' (feat Zaeb Dust, Blaktrix & Medusa) slows it down for a late-night trip with live-sounding drums and more great bars over the top.

Funky Shit Edits Vol 5
Cat: FS05 DP. Rel: 25 Oct 21
  1. Hussshhh!!! (2:27)
  2. Time In Child (1:41)
  3. Snoop On The Water (feat DJ N-Tone) (3:57)
Review:  Russia's Paul Sitter is in the driving seat for this latest missive from the Funky Shit Edits label. He comes through with a tribute to New York City native rappers on the hard hitting on 'Money Boovin'' and 'Arctigalactic.' Somehow, despite his many previous edits, this is Paul's first time on vinyl. They mark him out as one to watch this year and beyond. 'Hussshhh !!!' is a dense collage with tumbling drums and raw energy, 'Time In Child' gets more funky with some spaced out synth leads and sliding grooves while last of all DJ N-Tone features on 'Snoop On The Water,' a big, muscular beat packed with heat.

Wonderful
Cat: NP 33. Rel: 25 Oct 21
  1. Wonderful (4:33)
  2. The Other Side Of Nowhere (2:10)
Review: Floridian musician Tedi Robinson specialises in what he calls "mellowfunkism" - a smooth, colourful, Prince-influenced take on retro-futurist soul that various draws inspiration from jazz-funk, '80s groove, contemporary R&B and P-funk. It's this attractive, effortlessly soulful trademark sound that's showcased on Robinson's second Six Nine Music "45" as Son of Pearl. Robinson's dazzling bass and smooth vocals take pride of place on A-side 'Wonderful', alongside head-nodding, hip-hop style beats, glistening guitars and twinkling electric piano sounds. Over on the reverse, 'The Other Side of Nowhere' boasts all manner of kaleidoscopic, P-funk-influenced synth sounds, crunchy R&B drums and more elastic bass courtesy of Robinson, whose vocals are once again superb.

(Now Ya'll Givin' Up) Love (hand-numbered red vinyl 7" limited to 100 copies)

  1. (Now Ya'll Givin' Up) Love (3:20)
  2. (Now Ya'll Givin' Up) Love (instrumental) (3:25)
Review: Stetasonic was a short lived American hip-hop group who managed to put out three strong albums in their short time together. It was a remix of their 'Talking All That Jazz' by Dimitri From Paris that resurrected interest in the group in 1998 and now this 7" continues to shine a light on the often forgotten group. After a release on black wax last it, it now comes on limited red 7". (Now Ya'll Givin' Up) Love' is a hard hitting beat with a tense atmosphere. The crashing hits and reverberating drums break only for big stabs to light up the groove, all the while the biting rhymes keep on coming. An a cappella is provided on the flip for more adventurous DJs.

Toxic Funk Vol 7
Cat: BBP 196. Rel: 04 Nov 21
  1. Put Your Catz Up (4:20)
  2. Hot Jumpin' (4:08)
Review: Breakbeat Paradise serves up some big joints for b-boys and b-girls. There is a decidedly old school feel to these tunes that harks back to the glory days of early block parties in the streets of New York and its surrounding boroughs. The vital 45rm opens with 'Put Your Catz Up,' a jumbled of big horns, lively vocal chants and tumbling, wooden drums and hits that is all about getting crowds up on their toes. 'Hot Jumpin'' cuts loose on more leggy drums, with old school whistles and a classic vocal refrain that demand everybody get up and jump, and surely they will.
