Cat: T0RWHITE 001. Rel: 20 Sep 17
  1. Track 1 (3:30)
  2. Track 2 (4:17)
Review: New label Tell Zero Records hits the ground running with a 10" ambient white label that really impresses. There is some lush, slow motion tribalism on the A side that dives deep into the exotic. On the flip, the second beatless journey features some sombre and evocative Olafur Arnalds style piano playing over some haunting field recordings assembled into a captivating collage.

Cat: KIMOCHI 28. Rel: 18 Dec 17

  3. After A Short Illness (2:43)
  4. Dancing On Soft Borders (3:56)
  5. RIYL Failures (9:32)
Review: While the name may be new, A New Line (Related) is supposedly the work of an already established musician, although Kimochi was never a label that cared about hype. The music stands just fine on its own, digging into the kind of dusty and dusky house and techno formations that the label has forged its hand-sprayed identity on. There's plenty of ambient techno twirls to be enjoyed on the likes of "Dancing On Soft Borders", while the beats melt away entirely on "After A Short Illness" and grandiose EP closer "RIYL Failures". Once again Kimochi comes up with the kind of meaningful variations on the 4/4 framework that keep our record bags full and our souls enriched.

  6. Glasir (5:29)
Review: Liam Blackburn's Ancestral Voices project continues to gain traction, thanks to key releases for the likes of Samurai Horo, but his new imprint, The Fifth Kingdom, is where we believe that the singular-minded artist will truly shine. Mycelia, this opening EP, is a bottomless pit of ethereal sonics, starting off with the rain-coated sounds of "Meruah", followed by the sinister chimes of "Syloh", and the grainy drone noise of "Eumycota". On the B-side, "Eluvial Horizon" features a wide-eyed, cinematic setting that recalls the jurassic shores of Cornwall, while the wonderful "Mycelia" is infused with an aqueous glaze of distant hums, and "Glasir" ends on a new age tip that reminds us of Holland's CHI.

  1. A1 (7:04)

  3. B1 (13:25)
Review: Current scene favourite Nils Frahm teamed up with Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Olafur Arnalds on three breath taking excursions through lush ambient textures on "Stare" as a surprise release back in 2012 for label founder Robert Rath. "A1" features Frahm's entrancing irresistible melody over some gorgeous all-consuming strings and glacial soundscapes courtesy of Arnalds. "A2" with its heavenly, transcendental beauty has just got to be heard while "B1" explores darker territory with its excavating soundscapes accompanying the most hauntingly delicate cello notes. Exquisite!

Ich Traume So Leise Von Dir (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: MFM 015. Rel: 17 Nov 16
  1. Mein Tanzlied (5:06)
  2. Dir (4:49)
  3. Der Schnupfen (4:47)
  4. Abends (4:24)
Review: Once again, Music From Memory has dug deep for inspiration. Very few will have come across the original 1987 pressing of Ich Traume So Leise, a long-forgotten collaborative album that brought together trumpet player Heinz Becker, songwriter Karl-Heinz Stegmann, and poet Isabel Zeumer. Predictably, though, the tracks which the Dutch label has chosen to reissue are exceptionally good. "Mein Tanzlied", for example, features Becker's meandering trumpet lines and Zeumer's eyebrow-raising spoken word vocals seemingly drifting over an intoxicatingly funky, mid-80s dancefloor groove, while "Dir" is a seriously atmospheric chunk of beatless jazz poetry. Flip for the Balearic electro-funk of "Der Schnupfen" and the languid, new age ambience of "Abends".

Cat: BSA 006. Rel: 25 Oct 17
  1. Road (2:44)
  2. Convair (0:53)
  3. Torches (5:04)
Review: Tucked away in his Peak District hideaway, Jack Lever has been laying down sumptuous fusions of dusty ambience and lo-fi electronica for some time now. He first rose to prominence via a fine 12" on Apollo in 2013, before heading back to Derbyshire to self-release music from the archives on cassette and download. This return to wax is well worth a listen, if only for the drowsy, 6AM ambience of "Convair", which wraps shortwave radio crackle and yearning chord progressions around gentle acoustic guitars. "Torches" is a blissful and dusty outsider house shuffler, while lead cut "Roads" is a terrific, dancefloor-tempo trip-hop head-nodder rich in distorted guitars, cascading instrument solos and beefy dub disco bass.

Subtemple (10")
Cat: HDB 108. Rel: 23 May 17
  1. Subtemple (7:18)
  2. Beachfires (9:51)
Review: Naturally, there's been plenty of hype surrounding this new Hyperdub 10", which features Burial indulging his often-discussed ambient influences. It's a typically creepy and ghostly affair, with the lack of beats - if not rhythmic elements - only serving to amplify the shadowy producer's impeccable sound design and brilliant use of manipulated field recordings. A-side "Subtemple" is particularly paranoid in tone, featuring as it does chilling melody loops, curious vocal samples, looped vinyl crackle and all manner of layered background noise. Flipside "Beachfires" is, if anything, even more dystopian, with Burial basing the action around the kind of pulsing chords that gust back and forth like an autumnal breeze.

  3. Lenta - "Your Existence" (6:26)
  4. Ahu - "Blind By The Sun" (6:59)
Review: Just the fact that the Shahr Farag imprint is from Iran is enough to grab our attention. This is both because it feels like a novelty to the scene, but also because that vast majority of arts that come out of the country are always so interesting. This time, label owners Lenta and Ahu are joined by Romanian minimal expert Vlad Caia, who serves an excellent, Eastern-minded quasi-dance rhythm in "Declination", and a purely abstract barrack of drones and low frequencies on "Neptune". Lenta himself drops a fuzzy wash of sounds and disparate beats through "Your Existence", while Ahu's "Blind By The Sun" has something in common with dub-techno, except that here the sounds that flutter up and down are grainy and imperceptible...and wholly wonderful. Tip!

  1. Design Your Dreams (12:41)
  2. Another Time (10:50)
  3. The Lesser Light (3:54)
Review: Hands up who gets the vintage sci-fi reference in Trevor Jackson's latest production alias? For the non-nerds amongst us, Dark There Were & Golden-Eyed is the name of both a legendary short story by Ray Bradbury and a famous London sci-fi bookshop of the 1970s. Musically, the three tracks Jackson has served up this time round tend towards the stripped-back and synthesizer-heavy. They were apparently recorded between 2010 and 2014 using a minimalist set-up of handpicked pieces of analogue gear. While the B-side contains a couple of formidably dark, odd and curious, soundtrack style excursions, it's the epic A-side, "Design Your Dreams" - a fluid, loved-up and hypnotic blend of Terry Riley style cyclical synthesizer motifs and subtle percussion - that stands out.

Review: This new Syncrophone sub label named For Those Who Know is dedicated to 'alternative sounds' and presents mysterious French dark ambient industrial act Dedale. Starting out with the morose and rolling dub textures of "Preface de 1977" and the the woozy heroin house of "(Le) mythe" on the A side. On the flip, there's some haunting retro coldwave vibes on "Structure" and Meandres" respectively. Also features some lovely artwork and design on the sleeve by Anne Raffin / Annomane. We certainly are curious to see what kind of obscurities this label brings to us next!

  3. Shot Point (3:04)
Review: Few producers do the dub techno sound better than Rod Modell and on this second Atmospherica instalment, he shows why he is so revered. "Exploring The North" is dense and subdued, the hisses and crackles ebbing and flowing fluidly over a powerful sub-bass. "Pinewood Lodge" is more atmospheric and floaty, its chords flitting about like fireflies over a camp fire on the first night of autumn. Rounding out the release is "Shot Point". Immersive, hypnotic and ghostly, it washes through the speakers like waves crashing on a deserted beach at midnight. This is electronic music that is designed to get lost in.

Review: As Until My Heart Stops turns 10, we head back across the Atlantic , this time to Boston and a stunning ep from the still hugely under rated DeViere.DeViere is a music producer and radio disc jockey (Progressive Black, 90.3 FM WZBC Newton) based in Boston, Massachusetts. He first came to our attention with the Transcendental Numbers ep on Jamal Moss' Mathematics label in 2012 and we've waited on each release ever since, including last year's huge Future Shock Disco ep (a collaboration with Jamal himself). Here DeViere presents 3 beautiful examples of his deep, soulful craft and a fitting way for UMHS to hit double figures.

Review: Previously spotted on Udacha and sharing an excellent LP with A.E.M., Dices has already demonstrated a knack for wonderfully delicate ambient compositions and off-kilter 4/4, and the goods just keep on coming via this stunning 12" for Rough House Rosie offshoot Pandora. "Part 1" is a wonderful opening gambit powered by lightly pattering percussion, while "Part 7" enlists the help of Nick Ossia to float off into the swirliest of liquid synth baths. Ossia is also on hand to help with the more abstract sonic shapes of "Part 5", while "Part 3" provides a wonderfully energised, drum-rich ending to a truly standout EP.

  1. Pulse (16:53)
  2. High (17:38)
Review: The partnership of Kassem Mosse and Beatrice Dillon; Dillon Wendel is a place for the two respected artists to explore soundscapes, aesthetics and synthesis in pastures aeons away from the dancefloors they're most familiar with. Both compositions weighing in over 15 minutes, they're experiences which challenge form and convention; "Pulse" ripples with its namesake, a texture that buzzes and drones in endless waves while "High" mutates a warmer, grainer tone with dizzying effect.

  3. Querco - Pinetum I
  4. Querco - Pinetum II
Review: Maciej Banasik has been releasing plenty of music as MB as well as Docetism since 2012, but this release on Silent Season marks the first time the prolific artist's music has been committed to wax. In true Silent Season style the mood is consistently haunting, leading in with the foggy pulse of "Dentario Enneaphyllidis - Fagetum I" before the second part of the piece heads off into pure swelling drone. "Querco - Pinetum I" is a different kind of droning techno that comes loaded with cinematic poise, but it makes for a natural partner to the A side. The second part of that piece drifts into calming field recordings of birds and shapeless synth swells of a truly majestic nature.

  3. Ciaran Lawless - "GV" (13:02)
Review: The latest 12" excursion from the admirable Jungle Gym label is a loosely conceptual affair. It gathers together water-inspired tracks from regular contributor Dravier and Always Human Tapes alumnus Ciaran Lawless. The latter delivers two distinctive cuts: the fluid melodies, bobbing pads and plunging electronics of ambient opener "Ferry" and the ghostly, Selected Ambient Works-era Aphex Twin movements of epic flipside "GV", where hushed melody motifs rise above shuffling and distorted drum machine percussion. Dravier's "Harbour Fog" is arguably the most evocative track of the lot, boasting as it does drifting, early morning chord progressions, synthesized harp flourishes and a hypnotic, soft focus rhythm track.

Review: Earthen Sea goes by the name of Jacob Long when he's out of the studio, and out in the real world. This is for good reason, too, as his alias is just about as dreamy and hazy as one can get without taking a heavy load of tranquillisers. He's back on Ital's Lover's Rock label - the man himself has featured on Workshop, just in case you didn't know - with eight pieces of foolproof electronic psychedelia. "Entrance" sets the seen with cinematic drones, and opens up the doors to a rugged and loose collection of pseudo house tracks. Not really for the dancefloor, but equally not tame enough to be listened to on headphones, Earthen Sea's mood is energetic yet melancholic. Ambient and abstraction is mixed up with steely percussion, and locked grooves. We love this stuff, it's for the dreamers...

In fact, we like it this way, and are secretly hoping that these two minds keep on coming up with this dope material. That's because the Antimatter sound is very much their own; it's a strange and singular style of electronic dance music that doesn't pretend to be a part of any particular sub-genre. Moreover, although the two don't actually collaborate on these tunes, they've successfully managed to conjure a similar sound to one another, an abstract and temperamental shade of house with a vividly loose edge. From F-on's "Take Care Of Yourself" through to Bule's "Photon", we're taken on a journey through mid-tempo beats that have been utterly engulfed in oceans of vast and endless pads circling in mid-air. It almost feels like dub-techno, but it's still one step behind. One place lower in the evolutionary food chain. They're a bunch of head-spinners, and we're sure that we'll see more of these two in the near future.
