  2. Whenever Voi (6:06)
  3. Free Upload (4:53)
  4. Van Cul (5:31)
  5. Past Vibration (3:14)
Review: It's common knowledge now that #.4.26. is Ilian Tape mainman Dario Zenker, who under this alias released a slew of hard hitting DJ tools on cult label Frozen Border - and this is his first new material under the name since five years. From the sheer terror of dynamic opener "Mono Middle", a dystopian electro number saturated in dense lo-fi fuzz, the broken beats continue on the minimal boom and thump of "Whenever Voi". But it's the B side that proclaims no more Mr. Nice Guy here, with the slamming old school energy of "Free Upload" calling to mind the early '90s sound of Djax or Pro-Jex, while "Van Cul" again demonstrates Zenker's fine ability to weave broken beat arrangements into epic, big room techno bangers.

  2. Next (Who's Dead) (10:04)
  3. Mind Frame (5:42)
  4. Warm Leatherette (7:08)
Review: The Was/Is crew have proven themselves to be dab hands at burrowing away at the hidden folds of the 90s electro scene and finding some truly unsung heroes worth of a reissue. Following on from excellent work supporting the likes of Archetype, the US label can now be found shining a spotlight on the work of Can Oral under the 4E moniker. Originally appearing on labels such as Force Inc and Mille Plateaux, 4E's sound was quintessentially mid-90s, but only surfaced over a short period of time between 1994 and 1998. This record originally came out on Sockett in 1996, and it's been sought after as avid diggers pull out every thread of dope, adventurous electro they can find. Discogs pirates laugh no more, because now this essential record is back in the hands of the real music fans!

R&S
Cat: RS 1801. Rel: 19 Feb 18
  1. Universal Rhythm (9:36)
  2. Universal Rhythm (The Maghreban Soul mix) (6:50)
  3. Universal Rhythm (dub mix) (7:20)
Review: Next up on the esteemed R&S Records are Ibiza based Brits Acid Mondays - following up releases on top labels such as Rumors, Circus and La Vie En Rose. Formed 'somewhere in the 5th dimension', the duo is the cosmic coalition of fellow psychonauts Negghead (Dan Ward) and Lex Wolf (Alex Wolfenden). The energetic and soulful techno of "Universal Rhythm" is reminiscent of second wave Detroit sounds and features a powerful vocal performance by shamanistic MC Shovell. Taking it into deeper and more esoteric territory up next is The Maghreban's Soul mix. Repeated transformative visits to Ibiza culminated in landing regular slots at Circoloco where they have been testing this tune in the dance all Summer long.

  1. Week-End (5:43)
  2. 6PNHHPE (7:04)
  3. Stabilizer (4:36)
  4. Seita (5:36)
Review: De Grey launched last year with a 12" from Webstarr, and now it follows up with the raw, rough and ready sound of Jack Angle. "Week-End" is a lithe, percussive beast of a track that matches bloated kicks with glassy hits for a tracky but distinctive end result. "6PNHHPE" is a looped up, off-kilter affair that sports an industrial techno thread but heads into stranger territory with ease. "Stablilizer" is a more balanced, melodic affair but again those distinctive metallic tones pervade the mix and inject some real character into Angle's music. "Selta" takes this approach and whips it up into the most lively, peak-time minded belter on the whole record, sneakily tucked away on the B2.

  1. Quicksand (6:50)
  2. Hot Snakes (6:29)
  3. Texas Is The Reason (6:31)
Review: Ataxia are comprised of Detroit acid techno producers Eric Ricker and Ted Krisko, who made their debut back in 2013 with Canada's Clarian (Footprintz) and vocalist Cari Golden on an EP for Los Angeles based Culprit. They followed that up with a long awaited EP for Seth Troxler's Play It Say It last year and here we go again with the impressive follow up: Rave Oddities EP. From the minimalist and hypnotic spell casting of "Quicksand" which is very Motor City with its sense of funk and vaguely reminiscent of Mathew Jonson. On the flip, they bring some serious power with the epic rave energy of "Texas Is The Reason" with tunnelling hoover leads, gnarly Reese bassline and steely rhythms hammering the message home.

  4. DJ Surgeles - "Pulsating Orbs" (4:01)
  5. DJ Surgeles - "Out Of This World" (2:01)
Review: US techno wizard Developer is back on his trusted Modularz imprint, this time alongside the lesser known DJ Surgeles, and the duo pack quite the punch with these five cold-hearted dance burners. Developer's "Infinite Numbers" opens on a bit of a cavernous tip, unleashing whole swarms of chilling bleeps over a stripped-back techno beat, and "Glimmer" ups the ante with yet more speed - and by that we mean velocity, not the powdered type! DJ Surgeles' "Hidden Places" opens the B-side with an echoing, hollow mass of drums and bass, while "Pulsating Orbs" bounces up and down with a distorted tone of voice, and "Out Of This World" steadies the ships by forming a thick, oozing layer of beatless ambience. A dish best served cold...

  2. Streets At Night (Traumer 2D2 remix) (9:08)
  3. Streets At Night (part 3) (11:19)
  4. Knocked Out (9:17)
Review: The hardest working duo in electronic music are back - Parisians DJ Deep and Romain Poncet (aka Traumer) putting on hold multiple solo and collaborative projects (Deep Traum, Sergie Rezza et al) and return to Possible Future for a its sophomore effort. This follows up Leonel Castillo's inaugural release. Featuring the deeply hypnotic tribalism of "Streets At Night" (part 1) which gets an added dose of trance induction on the Traumer 2D2 remix up next - let's face it, this guy knows a thing or two about rhythm! On the flip, its 12 minutes of pure life affirming bliss on the epic "Streets At Night" (part 3) but they save the best for last on the second wave Detroit influenced techno-soul of "Knocked Out".

  1. Chaos (6:44)

  3. Excursion (7:26)
  4. Infiltrate (5:44)
Review: Everything is brand spanking new on the Infiltrate debut release, which finds James Infiltrate laying out an impressive selection of electro belters for all the robots out there. "Chaos" is a snappy jam that keeps the beats taut and nimble, the bass punchy and energetic and the atmosphere detailed and sci fi, just how good electro should be. There's more of a 4/4 thrust to "Conspiracy" while "Excursion" takes things a bit deeper with swirling melodic content drifting behind the minimal but motoring rhythm section. "Infiltrate" gets into a more classic kind of electro mode, keeping the bass moody and the beat snappy, for a heads down work out par excellence.

  4. Air (Ben Buitendijk remix) (6:16)
Review: Mickael Jeanneret is Janeret, a deep house producer from Paris who now finds himself with a release on promising new Russian label Berg Audio who have previously served up the likes of iO (Mulen) and Andre Kronert. For the Kord EP, the title track is a densely layered yet sublime and rolling journey through the dub techno sound and executed tastefully. Its remix by Berlin tech house hero Diego Krause respectfully retains the dubbiness yet injects it with more groove and swagger. On the flip, "Air" ventures down a much deeper route with emotive pads and hypnotic dub chords working to great effect. The Dilated Pupils affiliated Ben Buitendijk delivers a brilliant rework, covering the track in the right amount of dust and rust like he only can.

Review: DJ Nobu & NHK yx Koyxen new MTV moniker is something only The Trilogy Tapes could come up with, and it's another fine addition to the label's infamous web blog, which contains all sorts of outlandish sounds from every corner of the globe. "Snow Ball" and "Smart Ball", on the A-side, are two sides of the same coin; the former bleeps placidly to an eerie groove of molecular hypnotics, while the latter enters the rave with a slow yet brutalist assortment of bass bumps. "Smooth Motion" is a fuzzy, imperceptible techno experiment in the same style as Thomas Brinkmann's oddities, and "Look Back Motion" rattles an itchy, acid-driven stomper over a bare-bones groove that has TTT stamped all over it. That artwork, too...

  2. Hits Only - "Trion-4" (6:08)
  3. Shawn Rudiman - "Derelict" (6:11)
  4. Shawn Rudiman - "Asimolar" (5:32)
Review: Deeply concerned with the here and now versus sister label Was/Is' electro archaeology, Is/Was delivers the goods once again with this various artists 12" zeroed in on the Pittsburgh scene. You can feel the Steel City tension reverberating in Naeem's edgy beatdown "Forward Facing", while Hits Only takes things in a slightly cleaner, modernist direction that aligns with some of the UK soundsystem interpretations of electro that have emerged in recent years. Shawn Rudiman takes control for the B side with two jams that tip their cap to the veteran producer's long and accomplished career, but they sound as fresh as anything else on the record too. "Derelict" is a gnarly, bloated banger of a track, and "Asimolar" takes the route towards Cybotron, Kraftwerk and the truly foundational version of electro in all its lysergic glory.

Review: Manni Dee might be best known for his upfront techno tackle on Perc Trax and the like, but he's also been quietly building up a separate identity as Nuances, and it's a world away from his dancefloor output. Following on from some choice album appearances on Bastakiya Tapes, it's up to Tabernacle to give the project its first outing on wax. While Tabernacle can have some range in their sound, this finds the label plunging wholeheartedly into ambient climes. Heavily processed textures and delicate chimes all feed into a truly evocative atmosphere loaded with significance. Ignore the familiar name behind the music - this is an album deserving attention all on its own.

Review: You may well have come across Miltiades doing sterling work on such excellent labels as Nous and Echovolt, pushing a grubby, blown out kind of hardware house music for freaky warm ups and wayward souls in red lit basements. Stepping out as Outermost, the methodology seems to be the same but with an gutsy electro mission that suits Modal Analysis perfectly. There's a seductive quality to "Surface#1" that makes it the consummate opener to this record, but it's something of a foil for the extreme sonic degradation at work on some of the tones in "Surface#2". There's a more bleak, industrial tone to "Surface #3" while "Surface#4" heads into a slower braindance conundrum before the sludgy slow-mo acid of "Surface#5".
