Review: Kero Uno has been kicking for almost two decades, credited with reviving jazz sensibilities in hip-hop almost three decades since it, unfortunately, fell out of fashion around the turn of the century. K1 introduces city-pop and jazz-hop to two of Kdots biggest tracks, 'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe' and 'Love', the former of which was put on SoundCloud almost a decade ago now and created nothing but buzz. K1 skyrocketed to fame, having his album crowdfunded by excited fans and catching the attention of Kendrick's own mix engineer Derek Ali. The 'Don't Kill My Vibes' mix flips the 2012 hit into a vibraphone-led synthy jazz slice of heaven, while the 'Love' flip, 'Vinyl Love', is a chill, wavey city-pop banger, with subtle brass and airtight percussion coming together in perfect matrimony.

Review: 30 years on, 'Doggystyle' still has a big place in the hearts of West Coast rap fans as the record that launched Snoop Doggy Dogg's solo career, after his appearance on Dr.Dre's solo debut 'The Chronic' just the year before in 1992. Snoop isn't always given the recognition he deserves from newer hip-hop fans, but the well-versed recognise 'Doggystyle' as one of the most important G-Funk records of all time, and one of the most important hip-hop records of the 20th century. This anniversary reissue is the definitive package of this crucial record, featuring the song 'Gz Up, Hoes Down', which was missing from the tracklist until 2006 due to problems with clearing the sample 'The Look of Love'. The record is a family affair, no truly big names as features and being produced entirely by Dre - that's how you know it's good.

Review: The Alloy Cuts label is back with another sweet 45rpm that collides some of the greats of hip-hop past into two new fusion and mash-up jams designed to do plenty of damage to dancefloors. First up is Jurasoc 5 vs Booty Haul with 'Divided Conformelution' which has some sick low ends and booming kicks overlaid with funky guitar riffs and hard bars. Booty Haul's 'Conformstumental' then appears on the flip side as the original sample source for the a1. It's more physical with the bars stripped away and still has plenty of raw funk.

For the eighth time, it has chosen some real heat to offer up on 7" as King Tee and The Alkaholiks feature with two of their golden era boom-bap gems. 'Bus Dat Ass' has a mix of raw and dusty drum breaks and big, bouncy bars that bring a party feel. On the flip things get more slow and dirty, the bars are less playful and more serious and the production features squelchy bass and hypnotic Middle Eastern melodies. Two gems, to be sure.

It was the last one with their complete original line up before the passing of Phife Dawg. It continues stylistically from where the previous album, Beats, Rhymes and Life, left off with the group's signature minimalist beats, r&b overtones and jazz-flecked production, all of which was taken care of by The Ummah. The mature vocal themes, laid back delivery and subtle style of the album makes it one of the many classics in their oeuvre. This limited reissue spreads it over six sides of essential wax.

Review: The fledgling Heels & Souls label has already won our hearts with its first few reissues releases and this latest one is another gorgeous fusion of disco, and UK street soul with hints of funk, boogie and r&b. Opener 'Tell Him I Became Your Lover' has a killer bumping drum machine rhythm with nice wet hits and an aloof but soulful male vocal backed by diffuse organ chords. 'Somebody's Got My Love' is an 80s-channeling delight with fat bass and cold drum snap and another sublime vocal full of r&b appeal. ''Who's That Boy' on the flip is a super slow jam full of love struck charm and vocal heart ache and 'I Like The Way You Love Me' is another heart melting lament that is full of synth richness.

Their work in the 80s and 90s very much defined the sound as they fused jazz, funk, soul and dance into an all new form that had people all over getting up to get down. Their latest album, Into You, is as good as any of those earlier works that led to several top ten hits and is dead once again by Jean-Paul 'Bluey' Maunick who has been with them since their formation in 1979. Across 16 tracks the group showcase their lush sounds and great musicianship with a perfect blend of the old and the new.

Review: God bless XL Recordings. The UK label has been at the forefront of boundary pushing music since its inception, and almost 35 years remains a seal of quality. A constant source of inspiring surprises and new sonic experiences. The kind of organisation that will take a punt on British polymath Jai Paul's demo album, which, by all accounts, is pretty hard to describe, let alone define. More so, the type of team that would, eight years earlier, support and release one of the artist's earliest songs, 'BTSTU'. Coming full circle, that tune closes this collection of stuff produced around the same time, all of which was going to form the debut album, Bait Ones. One low-quality CD-R of the work stolen and then leaked online later, and the artist stepped away from music until the end of the last decade, when this "perfectly imperfect" LP was finally allowed to see the light of day. A lo fi, glitchy, trippy, granular, sexy sound that owes as much to hip hop, pop and r&b as experimental noise, ambient dub, and electronic soul.

Review: The Pimpala West Coast Classics series does exactly what it says on the label, delivering tidy 7" singles featuring new edits of much-loved 90s West Coast hip-hop gems. This time round, the scalpel fiend at the controls is Ronnie Frazzle. He first turns his attention to Snoop's Dr Dre-produced mega-hit 'Gin & Juice', a delightfully laid-back 1993 number that's often cited as one of the finest moments of hip-hop's "golden era". Over on the flip it's all about DJ Quik's 1992 Profile Records single 'Jus Lyke Compton', an even more laid-back and groovy affair that pays tribute to the notorious LA neighbourhood that became the focal point of the enormous "gangsta" hip-hop scene of the 1990s.

He even made a welcome comeback in the mid 2010s and added some more magic to his cannon. Review: Reissued, as it should, via the original label on which this ubiquitous single first made its mark on the world, House Of Pain's 'Jump Around' comes to our attention once more. A spiritual spin-off of Cypress Hill - the track's beatsmith DJ Muggs originally made the beat for the group, and it was only given to House Of Pain after being later rejected by Ice Cube - the song houses an undeniable demonstration of how samples themselves, when worked into the track in the right way, can work just as effectively as melodies in 'hooking' the listener. Notably, the high-pitched squeal, lifted from Chubby Checker's 'Popeye The Hitchhiker', occurs 66 times throughout.

Review: The second salvo on the Street Knowledge series of golden era hip-hop reissues comes from legendary East Coast twosome Gang Starr. It offers up a pair of much-loved 1990s club bangers: 1999's "Full Clip" and '92's "DWYCK". The former is a classic DJ Premier production: a toe-tapping, head-nodding bounce through rubbery beats, jazzy guitars and toasty bass topped off with the fine flows of the late MC Guru. Review: 'Czartificial Intelligence' is the twelfth, yes twelfth, studio album from Czarface, the old-school comic book-influenced hip-hop superpower featuring Wu-Tang's Inspectah Deck and the iconic MC duo Esoteric and 7L. Continuing to carry the torch that MF DOOM left to them, the legend shared in the group's adoration of superheroes and villains (even doing a collaboration album with them, his first posthumous release since his untimely passing), Czarface have carved out their own path, leading them to be one of the most recognisable groups in the history of the genre. The lead single 'You Know My Style' is an amazing clash of Deck, The Czar-keys and NYC rapper NEMS, with Esoteric rattling off comic book bars and NBA references against a beat that can only be described as devious.

Review: Originally issued back in 1998, Mezzanine remains the most commercially successful album released by Bristol troupe Massive Attack, thanks in no small part to the Liz Fraser-featuring "Teardrop". This third album signalled a change in sonic direction that played more explicitly on the darkness and tension that was always an undercurrent of their much loved debut Blue Lines and successor Protection. After numerous bootlegs over the years, Virgin have done the right thing and presented this official reissue of Mezzanine to appease fans of Massive Attack and it's clear the LP has lost none of it's bewitching power. The Quincy Jones and Isaac Hayes sampling "Exhange" and "Exchange" remain a delight in particular.

Review: New Yorker Has is a hip-hop behemoth who will always be associated with his untouchable Illmatic album, but he has also penned plenty of other words that are almost as good. One of them is I Am: The Autobiography, which they say might be the greatest album never released. It is a connect double album that was originally meant to follow up Illmatic and It Was Written and it follows a superb plot line from the moment he is born during the intro to his death in the outro. The second half of the album then sees him reincarnated but before any of this saw the light of day in an official capacity it was leaked and bootlegged back when the internet was still young and infamous for these things. Now after all these years it finally gets the proper vinyl drop it needs.
