  1. Efsun (feat Idil Mese) (8:37)
  2. Ghost Station (5:58)
Review: Swiss producer Mehmet Aslan has been enjoying his most prolific year to date, returning from a two-year absence with a gaggle of well-regarded records. His latest outing is less obviously dancefloor-focused than much of his work, but no less enjoyable for it. A-side "Efjun" is an off-kilter, slo-mo treat, with the Berlin-based producer peppering a skewed rhythm track with dreamy vocals, nagging electric piano hooks and intoxicated electronics. Arguably even better is wonky flipside "Ghost Station", a hypnotic affair where pulsing, kosmiche style motifs and lo-fi synthesizer riffs cluster around lo-fi machine drums and a mind-altering bassline. It's brilliantly out-there and ghostly, all told, and is one of the producer's most arresting tracks to date.

Review: Cold Beat is a San Francisco-based quartet fronted by Hannah Lew (synths, vocals) with Kyle King (synths, guitar), Luciano Talpini Aita (synths) and Sean Monaghan (guitar). Formed in 2013 the band has released three albums and two EPs. 'A Simple Reflection' is a 7-song collection of Eurythmics covers, yet feels just as personal as any of their original material. While digging through a collection of 12?s for her record shop Contact Records, Lew stumbled across the earliest Eurythmics B-sides and was floored. This lead to the discovery of their debut album 'In The Garden'. Annie Lennox's abstract and poetic lyrics really struck a chord with Hannah. What had started out as a single cover quickly snowballed into a full blown obsession. The synth and drum programming resonated with her songwriting process, so reimagining them was very creatively fulfilling. The covers on this EP are simultaneously dynamic and atmospheric post-punk that plays to Lew's ethereal vocals and King's crystalline guitar. All songs have been mixed by Mikey Young (Total Control) and mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The record is housed in a jacket designed by Eloise Leigh, which features pink and purple clouds that evoke a dreamy softness and DIY playfulness and photos Lew in her best Lennox-inspired drag. Each copy includes a postcard with photos and notes. "Sometimes a song seems to sing just for you, as if someone knows your most inner thoughts and feelings and has found a way to describe them effortlessly" - Hannah Lew

Moto (Man Power remix) (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: C 004. Rel: 18 Jun 18
  1. Moto
  2. Fe
  3. Ansia
  4. Moto (Man Power remix)
Review: After appearing on the first Calypso Records release out of Mexico last year, Colossio returns to the fray with a whole EP of sleazy jams for the warm up crowd to get nasty to. "Moto" is a grinding crossover track that features dirty garage guitars to match the low-slung synth undulations and sizzling disco beat, while "Fe" throws the windows open for a ranging cut centred around all kinds of instrumentation played with a post-punk looseness. "Ansia" keeps things nervous and atmospheric without skimping on party energy, and then Man Power swoops in for a remix of "Moto" that keeps things spooky while injecting a swinging groove into the mix.

  1. Beta Evers - "Predictions" (5:12)
  2. Beta Evers - "Only For My Satisfaction" (Bodyvolt remix) (4:52)
  3. Alienata - "Memory" (9:06)
Review: Beta Evers, the German darkwave electro queen, teams up with Berlin's reigning techno heroine Alienata for the latter's Discos Atonicos. Launched in 2017 with a simple leitmotif: passion for music. From esoteric experiments to the electro space dimension, the label's third edition keeps on with the quality efforts thus far by BS-1 and Artificiero. On the A side, the Kommando 6 boss delivers the sexy noir antics of "Predictions" said to be an unreleased track from her archives dating back to 2007/2008 and the Bodyvolt remix of "Only For My Satisfaction". The flip belongs to the Killekill affiliated Alienata, where she gets into some jacking and emotive house that takes it cues from Chicago's first wave on "Memory".

Review: Grim Lusk is a brand new alias of producer and experimentalist Murray Collier, who first came to our attention as one half of Optimo Music act Pussy Mothers. As you'd perhaps expect, this debut mini-album is devilishly difficult to pin down, with Collier fusing elements borrowed from a myriad of styles - dub, industrial funk, ambient, instrumental hip-hop, dark post-punk disco, experimental electronica and lo-fi techno included - to create entertaining and ear-pleasing workouts overflowing with interesting ideas. At times, the resultant cuts sound a little like Golden Teacher after a few too many sherberts, at others L.I.E.S style cuts peppered with inspired instrumentation. Throughout, you get the impression that Collier could be a name to watch in the months and years ahead.

La Piscine (limited coloured vinyl 12" repress)
Cat: MW 041. Rel: 07 Aug 18
  1. La Piscine (14:13)
  2. Calling Somewhere (14:52)
Review: Fans of mechanical techno-not-techno sounds will be all over Minimal Wave's latest transmission from 80s French underground heroes In Aeternam Vale. Having reissued several essential lost works from the outfit last year, most notably the proto-Sandwell sound of "Highway Dark Veins", Veronica Vasicka delivers another two tracks from the vault. Stylistically mirroring that previous two track release the title track is an equally brilliant synth-techno beast which could easily pass for a Function track today, while B-side "Calling Somewhere" sounds like a cold wave version of proto-halfstep. Needless to say, the fact that these tracks are 22 years old literally left us speechless.

  1. Alles (4:32)

  3. Schwarz (4:00)
  4. Commerce (4:59)
Review: San Francisco trio INHALT burst onto the scene back at the turn of the decade, going on to release a trio of well-regarded EPs on [Emotional] Especial and Dark Entries. Here they return to the latter label with their first 12" for almost four years. As usual, their music is stylish, dark and clandestine, with wild-eyed German vocals riding brooding, John Carpenter-influenced arpeggio lines, creepy chords and bustling drum machine grooves. Our pick of the bunch is probably the up-tempo, triple time hustle of "Commerce", though the more polished and atmospheric opener "Alles" and EBM-minded bubbler "Schwarz" are also mighty fine.

  2. Greater Reward (dub) (7:17)
  3. Big Car (Crash dub) (7:48)
  4. All Saints Day (Saints dub Day) (8:09)
Review: Optimo Trax 015 sees label boss JD Twitch indulge his love of cult Australian DIY act Severed Heads with a trio of dub version culled from the B-sides of their 1980s 12" output. Titled quite artfully Big Saints Reward (1987 - 90 dubs), perennial Twitch favourite "Greater Reward" features prominently with the Dub version accompanied by an all new "Piano Power Edit" from the Optimo man which takes full advantage of the glorious keys that characterise the track. Complementing these, the B-side houses "Big Car (Crash dub)" and "All Saints Day (Saints Dub Day)" which add further credence to the notion Severed Heads are one of the most important acts in the formation of club music as we know it today. A superb record!

Review: Bursting onto the scene with some impressive releases on Hotflush and Permanent Vacation, Danielle Caldelas aka Terr presents a brand new thriller on Correspondant. The Neuromancer EP features yet more of her trademark dark romantic techno, with influences of EBM, synth-pop and house. From the sultry and euphoric title track that's packed full of soaring synths, rushy arpeggios and a distinct retro flair throughout, the falling acid of "Multiverse" with its unashamed Kraftwerk influence or the roaring and neon-lit remix by New York by way of Dublin's Krystal Klear on the flip.

Review: Umo Vogue formed in Bristol by Stig Manley, Russ Crook and Neil Deamer who were in Bath based ska rock outfit 'The AT's', along with Bristol based singer Debbie Marlow. Neil's Brother Clive joined the band bringing a fantastic new dynamic to the band on drums, percussion and heavy artillery. The band name is a deliberate misspelling of the ultra-chic Italian fashion magazine 'L'Uomo Vogue'. After winning the Bristol 'Battle of the Bands' in 1982 they were signed to Phonogram and dropped a few months later. They then signed to EMI in '83 and released their first single 'Just My Love' released in early 1984. The second single was 'Make It Real' and was never released as the band were culled from the EMI roster in late '84. For this reissue of their debut single we've added 3 bonus tracks, a demo of "Just My Love", the unreleased follow single "Make It Real" and a bedroom demo "Erotica." Each song displays ridiculously catchy melodies and innovative electronic rhythms. The drum tracks, a combination of rhythm machines and hand percussion, were mixed down from the 4-track tape used as backing on stage, with the rich slap bass and Roland SH09 synths weaves fluid lead lines in between the harmony vocals. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The record is housed in an exact replica of the original jacket and includes an 8-page booklet with photos, notes and press clippings from the band's archive. "We're synthetic but not antiseptic. We are interested in the naivety and spontaneity of music." - Umo Vogue

Review: Celebrating 35 years since their debut single "Into Battle With Art Of Noise", one of the most influential electronic acts of all time present the ultimate best of set across two CDs. Crammed with their most well known and gamechanging moments ("Close (To The Edit)", "Love Beat", "Beat Box") and the slightly lesser spotted but still just as vital tracks such as the Rakim-meets-Debussy banger "Metaphor On The Floor", Way Out West's breakbeat charm on "Dream In Colour" and the outright daft Max Headroom collab "Paranoimia", this is a detailed and enduring collection that celebrates the band's legacy and influence. Timeless.

Review: D.A.L.I. is the new alias of UK legend Deadly Avenger aka Luke Insect aka the baddest British krautrock producer around. To mark the launch of his new moniker he's put out this new album by the name of When Haro Met Sally, a piece of work that evolves his trademark sounds into a blissful range of coldwaves and synthed-out drum-machine grooves. The album progresses in a dream-like state, going from the very loose and ethereal, such as on tunes like "Kuwahara Dreams", to something reminiscent of a 1980s film score - "Goodtimes In Badlands" standing out as a total winner among this extensive collection of summer burners. More than anything else, this LP is a perfect snapshot of a retro nostalgia that has won over dancers worldwide. Recommended!

Review: El Deux is the Swiss electro-pop trio of Gutze Gautschi (guitar, vocals), Steno Onetz (bass), Martin Kraft (vocals, drum machine). Formed circa 1981 in Aarau by Gutze and Steno who played together in punk/New Wave band Fresh Color aka Frische Farbe featuring a pre-Yello Dieter Meier. Gutze's minimal electronic compositions did not fit the concept of Fresh Color, so they formed a new project with their live mixer, Martin Kraft, on vocals. The group was quite successful with many concerts, mainly in southern Germany and various TV appearances in Germany and abroad. Between April/September 1982 they recorded and mixed their debut album 'Nur Fur Madchen' in 15 days at Powerplay Studios, Zurich. The LP was released later that year on Gold Records. Influences at that time were of course the NDW "Neue Deutsche Welle'' movement and also from Gutze's time as a musician & guitarist since 1965. Their step up for recording was a Moog Prodigy, Korg Rhythm 55 (KR-55), Simmons Drums, Casiotone 202, Guitar and Bass. We've added a bonus track "Video King" that was originally released as a follow up single in 1984 before the group disbanded. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The record is housed in an exact replica of the original jacket and includes an insert with photos and lyrics.
