Review: This is a very special gold vinyl version of the soundtrack for the tokusatsu science fiction superhero television series Spectreman. It ran in the early 70s and had three seasons in all with a cult following who will go nuts to finally have these sounds on wax all these many decades later. It has one Japanese side and one American side and is the work of Ricardo Cruz and Kunio Miyauchi. Instrumentals and the theme song all feature to make this a real retro classic.

Review: Beak> returns with their fourth studio album, >>>>, embracing the concept of head music to be experienced as a cohesive album rather than individual tracks. Recording began at Pen Y Bryn in Talsarnau, Wales, amidst the remnants of the COVID era, before transitioning back to Invada studios in Bristol. The opener, 'Strawberry Line,' a tribute to their furry friend Alfie Barrow, sets the tone for the album. This release marks their debut on Temporary Residence in North America. ;Brean Down' is a more confident Barrow with vocals prominently featured in a traditional verse-chorus structure. Review: Frequently compared to Black Sabbath thanks to their love of satanic and occult imagery and heavy, proto-metal sound, Black Widow were a band that burned brightly, briefly. This excellent six-disc set tells the story of the Leicester outfit's career from start to finish. It begins with two discs dedicated to their origins: the band's sole LP as Pesky Gee, 1969's psychedelic rock and blues-rock influenced 'Exclamation Mark', and a CD showcasing the group's earliest Black Widow demos. The rest of the collection showcases the evolution of their sound between 1970 and 73 via lightly expanded versions of the albums Sacrifice (1970), Black Widow (1970), Black Widow III (1972) and Black Widow IV (1973). The definitive anthology of one of British rock's genuine cult bands.

Review: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band are the latest act to be featured in Warner's series of Now Playing greatest hits-style comps. Born Don Vliet, Captain Beefheart was a true innovator in modern music, boasting a four-and-a-half-octave vocal range, and fused free jazz, Delta blues, classical music and rock & roll with unique rhythms and surreal lyrics. Though he never achieved mainstream success, his influence permeated punk, new wave and post-rock and this album shows why, with tracks like 'I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby' and 'Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles' showcasing his bolder moves, alongside the more introspective 'My Head Is My Only House When It Rains' and 'Clear Spot.' Vliet, a child prodigy in art, moved to the Mojave Desert in his teens, where he met Frank Zappa. They initially collaborated on a film project, but Vliet eventually formed the Magic Band. After several lineup changes, they released the seminal Trout Mask Replica in 1969. Beefheart's career spanned various experimental phases until he retired in 1982 to focus on painting, earning acclaim for his abstract outsider art.

Review: The word is (over) used a lot when it comes to music, but there's no denying that Cardiacs were utterly unique. Emerging from the suburban commuter belt between the outskirts of West London and sleepy Surrey, they created a world of their own where vicious punk rock and implausiably complex prog were joined in joyous union, with the geniunely genius songwriting of singer/guitarist Tim Smith at its heart. 'Heaven Born & Ever Bright' is their third studio album and arrived after a slimming down of their classic six piece line up to a much sleeker four, but the songs attain an intensity and scalpel-like precision even its predecessors find hard to match. Smith would never pick actually pick a favourite of the four Cardiacs studio LPs, but when asked he would usually simply declare that he felt this one was underrated. Some four years after his death, following a tragic and lengthy debilitation after he suffered a major stroke and an episode of cerebral anoxia in 2008, it's perhaps time Cardiacs fans righted that wrong.

Review: This concept album is a sonic odyssey into the depths of an acid trip, capturing a multitude of states of consciousness and profound internal emotions. It's a rich experience, best appreciated in different mind states and with full presence. The album is rooted in psychedelic/space tock and Krautrock, with touches of psych folk and electronic elements. It features acoustic guitar, delicate flute, harp-like instruments, bells, and assorted percussion, creating a lush and textured soundscape. The music is mostly instrumental, peppered with occasional vocals and spoken word, reminiscent of early Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream and Popol Vuh. The standout track 'Silence' exemplifies the album's excellence, though all tracks are commendable. The album delivers a dark, atmospheric, and hypnotic sound. Percussion, flute, organ, guitars, and early electronics create proto-industrial sound collages that captivate the listener. DOM, consisting of Gabor and Laszlo Baksay, Rainer Puzalowski, and Hans-Georg Stopka, evolved from the beat/psychedelic band Set Mind. Regulars at Dusseldorf's underground clubs like Creamcheese, they shared the stage with early Kraftwerk and Can, cementing their place in the Krautrock pantheon. This mostly looked over album is a great find for those into progressive rock music.
