Review: Full Pupp invite you into the world of another aspiring homegrown talent with the cheekily titled Be A Man You Ant, the debut album from the unheralded Andre Bratten.. The Oslo-based artist is a product of his Scandinavian environment of synth pop and disco, churning out his seven-track Be A Man You Ant LP in the same studio space as Norway's production royals Lindstrom, Todd Terje and Prins Thomas. Citing the likes of Led Zeppelin, Royksopp, Metro Area and Brian Eno as inspirations, Bratten limited much of his production on Be A Man You Ant to one modular synthesiser. Relishing the constraints imposed on him, Bratten sculpts a varied array of squelches and gurgles alongside neon melodies and thrumming drum machines. A welcome addition to the Full Pupp cause!

Review: This one is all about the A-side; Jamaican-in-Miami King Sporty's 79 original was a little too far ahead of its time. But by 83 the world was ready for the Moog-slapping angularities of "Get Down". Coated with gloriously gutsy vocals from Connie Case, it become a foundation record in the Miami funk movement which would spawn freestyle a year or so down the line. Now fully remastered, this really is a very special record. Need help with the funk comedown? Flip for Connie's cosy country on the B (then flip back over for "Get Down" again. Just because.)

Review: David Grellier, head of French label Valerie, and the creative force behind College has a lot to thank film director Nicholas Winding Refn for. Whilst the Nantes based label built up quite the cult following in the 2nd wave blog explosion thanks to their retro-futurist blend of electro inspired by the vivid aesthetic of 80s US pop culture, the fact the Danish director handpicked the College track "A Real Hero" as the main theme for Gosling vehicle Drive has opened up Grellier's work to a much wider audience. Here Geoff Barrow's Invada continue to invest their belief in the College sound with the issue of their 2008 EP Teenage Colour EP on vinyl for the very first time. If you loved 'that' track then you will certainly enjoy the colourful synth pop of this five track EP.

Review: The latest dinked 7" single on Tim Zawada and Ben Van Dyke's essential Star Creature label comes from Diamond Oritz, AKA boogie and '80s soul revivalist Jeremy Diamond-Oritz. While there are many overlooked gems in the producer's back catalogue, there's little as rush inducing as "Make Me Wanna". A slick, soulful song with authentically rubbery and kaleidoscopic '80s soul/boogie production, it sounds like a long lost classic. The breezy, slap bass-wielding instrumental B-side, "Wait Up", is arguably even better. Like the A-side, it boasts some serious good synth action and a groove that you just have to dance to.

Review: Dailysessions Monchan lets rip with a second volume in his "East Village Edits" series. Once again and it's a full spectrum adventure that will leave you puzzling over what to drop first. Will it be the lolloping bass and vibraphone jam that's "Groove Go Around" or the tightly plucked, siren-soaked percussive disco bubbler "All U Need"? Perhaps you'll go for the big string dynamite of "You Are My Superwoman" first? Or maybe, just maybe you'll freak out with the block-rocking b-boy jam "Wrecked Train Disco"? One thing is definite: this EP really is the bee's knees.

Review: Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings serve up a bunch of sweet remixes for proper house heads. Irish lads Brame & Hamo remix Fouk's "Lefty's Bar", its a sweet slice of slow-mo house that's worth a listen. Fouk then returns the favour, remixing their track "Hotshot", giving it a sleazy deep funk flavour that's unashamedly indebted to KDJ. On the flip are label head honchos Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets giving Nachtbraker's "You'e Out Of Your Element" a deep trippy tech house makeover that's perfect to use as your pre-peak time track. Oh, their track "Alright We'll Be" gets a sultry and adrenalised rework by Leipzig's M.ono. The confusion all ends in spectacular fashion with Maurits Verwoerd aka Nachtbraker's turn at a remix. He gives M.ono's "Delaware State Route" a tracky and percussive house remodel that could have equally been at home on Sascha Dive's Deep Vibes imprint.

Review: Two insane slices of disco funk from the late 70s/early 80s, Salsoul and Fraternity have collaborated to release this very special 45. Not only is this the first time either track has appeared on 7", but they're also massively influential in sample culture. Instant Funk's "Funk Is On" comes complete with a lavish swinging breakbeat that most will recognise in the work of Stetsasonic but it's Gaz's "Sing Sing" that wins the most-sampled trophy, having appeared everywhere from Wu-Tang's "It's Yourz" to Wamdue Project's "King Of My Castle" to Kylie Minogue's "Speakerphone"! Two legendary slices of history, one special "7... The funk is well and truly on!

Review: Italian upstart Kiu D serves up a three course banquet of high cholesterol edits. For starters we're presented with a heart-attack inducing deep fried platter of greasy synths as Rocker's Revenge's "Walking On Sunshine" gets the full fat treatment. For mains we're served "Disco Brains"; the audio equivalent of a 20oz steak, it has the juiciest, rarest boogie bassline this side of Manhattan. For dessert we're treated to the sweetest of treats as the smooth-yet-unrelenting "Calm Before The Storm" ebbs and flows softly thanks to lavish piano strokes and a peppering of syrupy jazz elements. What a feast. What a debut release.

First up "Kon Kon Vie" takes "Bon Bon Vie" and gives it a respectful extension and added beef to the frizzy bass groove. Meanwhile on the flip we find an equally sweet twist on "Candidate For Love" as Kon ensures the shimmering keys and honey-coated vocals are given full focus over the bold disco hook. It's time for some Munky business! Who's in?

Review: 14 Karat Soul's Erwin Lanier Junior laid down this 45" in 1980 and it's been sought after ever since, often passing hands for hundreds among collectors. "Blinded (By The Qualities Of You)" struts with an insistent kicks, lavish strings and fluttering horns while Lanier slips between a deeper tenor and Gorrie-style falsettos. "24 Hours" shows off Lanier's sense of upbeat urgency with epic layers of backing vocals and a dynamic that tips a strong nod to Whitfield and Strong's songwriting style. You can tell why this has been in such high demand.

Review: The 12th volume in the ongoing Garage Classics series contains another ten slabs of dancefloor dynamite that were once championed by the late, great Larry Levan at New York's legendary Paradise Garage. As you'd expect, there are a couple of vintage Levan remixes present - including a hard-to-find instrumental take on Gwen Guthrie's "Hopscotch" - alongside the kind of tracks that should be in any discerning DJ's record box or CD wallet (Shirley Lites' sweaty "Heat You Up (Melt You Down)", Colonel Abrams' "Trapped (Dance Mix)" and Luther Vandross's '80s soul sing-along "Never Too Much" being the greatest examples). The compilers get extra Brownie points for including Liquid Liquid's low-slung dub-disco thriller "Rubbemiro" and Girigio Moroder's guitar-laden "Evolution", which is often overlooked by DJs.

As usual, the tracklist is reflective of Mancuso's love of mixing things up. So, there's the spiritual jazz bliss of "East", the sweet, soulful disco bliss of The Sisters Love's "Give Me Your Love", the solo-laden jazz-funk of "Happiness Bend", the superb Francois Kevorkian mix of Grace Jones' cover of "Warm Leatherette", and even a dash of David Bowie. It also includes Pleasure's "Joyous", a spiraling chunk of disco-funk that's still able to turn dancefloors into a sweaty mess 40 years after it was first released.

Review: Speak to any New York DJ of a certain vintage, and they'll happily talk for hours on the thrill of attending parties at The Loft, and in particular the open-minded brilliance of David Mancuso's selections. The ongoing Loft Classics series has thus far done a good job in reflecting this. This 12th installment is no different. While it contains a wealth of disco classics (The Winners' "Get Ready For The Future" and Geraldine Hunt's "Can't Fake The Feeling" included), the mystery compilers have also found room for the spiritual jazz-dance goodness of "High Priestess", the heavyweight dancefloor dub of "How Much Are They", and the oh-so Balearic loveliness of closer "City Country City".

Review: Pumping disco funk from decorated digger Nick The Record. "Lifeforce Theme" pays homage to the Japanese party collective he's been with since the early 90s (and played at Japan's first ever outdoor rave with, no less) Loose and rugged but primed with a lavish sense of piano luxury, there's a deep drive and firm uplift that instantly grabs attention. "Recordnition" is a much more heads-down in its nature and focus as we're pulled in by the hypnotic percussion, worming wah wahs and sharp blasts of flutes. As always with Nick, the floor is the foremost focus.

  1. Magico (3:20)
  2. La Terra Ed Il Seme (3:28)
  3. Electrik Flower (4:14)
Review: It would be safe to say that Gino Pavan's Magico initially sunk without trace when it first appeared, way back in 1980. In recent times, the original 7" has become an in-demand item amongst cosmic disco collectors. This limited reissue marks the first time Pavan's tracks have appeared on 12". "Magico" itself remains a fine example of space-rock/disco fusion, with winding synthesizer lines rising and falling over a rubbery groove and spacey, sustained chords. The synths come to the fore on E.P standout "Electrik Flower", where spiraling melody lines ride a pulsating, proto Italo-disco groove. The more low-slung "La Terra Ed Il Seme", which makes excellent use of Tony Allen style drumming and fluttering flute solos, is also fantastic.

Review: Prins Thomas doesn't do things by halves. Having recently released another triple-disc mix album - the rather fine Paradise Ghoulash - he's decided to make his latest album a quadruple-vinyl set. Intriguingly, it also sees him set aside "all conventional drums and drum machines" in order to create a series of epic, evocative, slowly evolving ambient pieces. These were seemingly equally as inspired by classic ambient house - think the Orb/Robert Fripp collaboration FFWD, early System 7, and so on - as IDM tracks of the 1990s. Whatever the exact inspiration, each of the 9 tracks is utterly beguiling, and hugely suited to horizontal home listening.
