Review: Passing fashions for jerky post-punk and effervescent dance-pop have elevated this confusingly monikered outfit to hot topic status over the years, but !!! have maintained their own identity throughout. Tapping into a lineage of New York party music that touches on Ze records and Studio 54 whilst also embuing their sound with a punk rock vim and vigour straight from CBGBs, 'Shake The Shudder' might be the most timeless collection of suss, sway and swagger these freaks have put together in their 21 (!) years of filling dancefloors. Chk (chk chk) it out.

Review: B. B. & Q. Band (Brooklyn, Bronx, and Queens Band), was an Italian-American post-disco band. A studio project created by the late Jacques Fred Petrus after the success of his main project Change with Mauro Malvasi. The band formed in Bologna in 1979, disbanded in 1987 and featured members such as Kevin Robinson, Paris Ford, Chielli Minucci and Curtis Hairston among others. Disco Hits (remastered) comes courtesy of Original Disco Culture and features timeless classics such as the unmistakable 'On The Beat', the neon-lit sway of 'All Night Long' (She's Got The Moves I Like) as well as Dancin' Danny D's mix of 'Riccochet' and Shep Pettibone's rework of 'Dreamer'.

  1. World Of Make Believe (Frank Booker edit) (5:39)
  2. Sequence Of Movement (Frank Booker edit) (6:51)
Review: Frank Booker returns for his second outing on the evergreen Disco Deviance label offering up another pair of glorious disco reinventions seen through a raver's eye. "World Of Make Believe" is a fancy, down the line disco churner with plenty of strings, a hard punch, and a fabulous but of vocal riding over those kick drums; "Sequence Of Movement", instead, is all funky and down on the floor, boasting a sublimely phased out guitar serving as one mighty, groovy, delicious bassline. Yes please Frank.

  1. Journey To The Light (part 1 - DJ Nori edit) (4:13)
  2. Journey To The Light (part 2 - DJ Nori edit) (3:19)
Review: Subject to edits from such luminaries as Ashley Beedle and Danny Krivit, Brainstorm's most iconic cut "Journey To The Light" gets extended to the point of two parts by Brooklyn editor and selector DJ Nori. Part One is all about the Detroit dynamos' ability to hit sizzling high notes on the chorus and drop into swooning jazzy verses while Part Two is more of a groove-based, stripped back version where the instrumentation and backing vocals are brought right into the light. Stunning.

I'm Gonna Miss Ya
  1. Aaron Broomfield - "I'm Gonna Miss Ya" (4:32)
  2. Broomfield Corporate Jam - "Does Anybody Really Know" (4:01)
Review: For their latest trip into "in-demand collector cuts" territory, Edinburgh's Athens of the North shines a light on the work of obscure Miami artist Aaron Broomfield. "I'm Gonna Miss You" originally appeared on Mountain Records in 1981 and has become something of a sought-after record in recent years. It's a brilliant chunk of rubbery Miami synth-funk rich in mazy synthesizer solos, elastic slap bass and the urgent hustle of P-funk. Over on side B you'll find the cosmic soul bump of "Does Anybody Really Know", which appears to a previously unreleased vocal workout featuring some deliciously fuzzy electric guitar solos.

Do You Feel My Love
  1. Do You Feel My Love (4:11)
  2. Dance On It (4:35)
Review: Bay Area bliss: Preservation revisit two moments of absolute soul boogie from Jerry J Johnson's legendary live troupe California Flight Project. "Do You Feel My Love" has a silky funk touch with a peppy chorus and tight backing vocals running point over the shiny rippling wah wahs. "Dance On It" has more of a disco mentality with just the right amount of physical emotion running throughout. Written in the 80s, released in the 00s, vibed to in 2018, both cuts are timeless. Thank you Preservation.

  1. Il Veliero (11:58)
  2. Welcome To The Party (3:54)
  3. Dancin' On Town Square (3:34)
Review: This is a first official repress of "Il Veliero" after the original 1982 12" release. It is an all-time Italo classic that is presented in full glory with the original sleeve and 12 minute extended mix that will carry you away on a slightly cheesy but easy to love disco groove full of warm sunny breeze and carefree melodic bliss. Two lesser known cuts take up the b-side - the playful percussive disco funk of "Welcome To The Party" and uptempo licks and sliding hi hats of "Dancin' On Town Square." Summer, where you at?

  4. Cathedrals (Jkriv dub) (6:33)
Review: Part two of a picture sleeve, special release for Record Store Day 2018, featuring new and exclusive remixes of American legend D.C. LaRue. "Overture" (Folamour Orchestra mix) sees the French rising star deliver a glimmering boogie-down perspective for the late night, while Crazy P main man James Baron dons the Ron Basejam alias again - for a sunny dub of "Do You Want The Real Thing?" from the 1978 motion picture Thank God It's Friday. The always reliable Idjut Boys lend their deft hands to a remix of "Let Them Dance" from 1978's classic Confessions LP and closing out this fine remix package on the flip is the Razor-N-Tape affiliated J-Kriv: serving up another 'respectful edit', this time of "Cathedrals".

Review: After almost a decade, Al Kent has decided to re-launch his acclaimed series of personal re-edits, "Disco Demands". He's clearly been itching to share his most successful disco reworks, because "Part 6" is an all action affair packed to the rafters with high-grade treats. You'll find the same material mixed together on one disc and in DJ-friendly unmixed form on the other. Highlights are plentiful, from the stretched-out, extra-percussive build-ups of Kent's revision of Ava Cherry's "You Never Loved Me" and the flanged guitar goodness of his extended revision of George McCrae's "Givin' Back The Feeling", to the high octane disco-rock thrills of Jo Bisso's "I Wanna Love" and the delay-laden late night sleaze of JD Hall's piano-powered "Wonder Woman".

Cat: ATH 037. Rel: 22 Sep 16
  1. Life Is A Miracle (unreleased Full version) (4:55)
  2. Life Is A Miracle (part 1) (3:36)
Review: Southern soul star Jeff Floyd was just 18 when he provided vocals for this Michael Floyd-produced single in 1978. "Life Is A Miracle" was Jax Transit Authority's only single, and has since gone on to be an in-demand item amongst Northern Soul DJs, in particular. Given that original copies fetch upwards of L5,000, this Athens Of The North reissue is certainly welcome. Brilliantly, this pressing not only features the sought-after original 7" A-side (here tucked away on the flip), but also the previously unreleased full-length version. Predictably, it's a thing of great beauty, with Jeff Floyd's brilliant vocals soaring above a wave of undulating disco-funk bass, spiraling synth solos and clipped guitar riffs.

Review: Given that Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan is the man at the controls, it's perhaps unsurprising that this surprise debut full-length from little known Canadian chanteuse Jessy Lanza drips with smooth, synthesized sweetness. Packed with Greenspan's trademark melancholic, Metro Area-ish synths, but built around Lanza's fragile, otherworldly vocals, Pull My Hair Back is a contender for the best leftfield pop album of the year. Variously touching on synthesized R&B, deep boogie, sparse torch songs (see the sublime title track) and starbust wonkiness (the beautifully off-kilter "As If"), Lanza and Greenspan have delivered an impeccable, unassuming delight. Recommended.

Review: Brooklyn crew Ship To Shore is doing the world a favour by reissuing this slept-on, hard-to-find Japanese gem from 1984. Masterminded by producers Masanori Sasaji (best-known for being a member of post-punk synth-pop band Mariah) and Takehiro Honda (an acclaimed jazz and jazz-funk pianist), "Sahara" was an attempt to turn singer Rie Murakami into a star. While they failed in that aim, the album giddily joins the dots between Prince style, guitar-laden purple funk, the eccentric and playful synth-pop of Yello, synth-heavy '80s soul, jazz-funk and, more surprising, heavily orchestrated vocal jazz/easy listening. It's an undeniably odd mixture, but one that not only works wonderfully but also sounds like nothing else around.

  3. Zombies In Miami - "Panoramica" (6:36)
  4. Hokaiido - "Talisman" (6:35)
Review: Bizarrely, Running Back boss Gerd Janson describes this multi-artist EP as "a sampler for a hypothetical mixtape". Perhaps he should make that imaginary mix a reality, because all four cuts are quality. Check first the throbbing and pulsating brilliance of Storken's "Lille Vals", which sounds like an Italo-disco obsessive's take on Bobby Orlando's mid-1980s work (with a little NYC freestyle thrown in) before donning your extra-special dancing shoes to shuffle along to Alan Dixon's new dancefloor "Drums Mix" of his synthesizer soundscape "Ambient Braindisk". Zombies In Miami deliver the goods on bleeping, synth-laden nu-disco throb-job "Panoramica", while Hokaiido's "Talisman" offers the perfect combination of delay-laden proto-house drums on steroids, bold freestyle bass and cheery synthesizer melodies.
