  3. Brazilian Groove (De Gama Re-Groove) (6:53)
Review: There should be no end to the amount of sunny afro disco tunes in your collection. Italian label Samosa are always happy to help with that and this latest outing by C. Da Afro is a perfect collision of soul and funk, jazz and afro styles. Opener "Afro-Disiac"'s horn leads, sultry sax lines and dub disco beats are perfection. "Smoothie" goes further with a bristling and earthy energy conjured by plenty of jangling rhythms and organic percussive sounds before the pumping and celebratory sounds of De Gama's "Re-Groove" of "Brazilian Groove" closes things out in fine fashion. Authentic, lovably loose and impossibly radiant stuff.

  1. Free Your Mind (5:51)
  2. Imani River (feat Bridgette Amofah) (4:58)
  3. Infinity (feat Bridgette Amofah) (7:28)
Review: Italian Latin jazz stalwart Nicola Conte first joined forces with trombonist Gianluca Petrella way back in 2001 on the nu-jazz era "New Standards" single. The pair started working on new material in 2014 and the "Free Your Mind EP" is their third joint release since. They're in a surprisingly up-beat, club-ready mood on EP opener "Free Your Mind", where Ebo Taylor style guitars, Africa 70 organs, tasty vocal samples and Afrobeat style horn lines are underpinned by a relaxed deep house groove. Vocalist Bridgette Amofah stars on the EP's other two cuts: the percussive tribal jazz of highlight "Imani River" and epic B-side "Infinity", a superb chunk of Afro-tinged deep house that sounds like it was inspired by Kai Alce and Ron Trent records.

For The Love Of Money (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: MRB 7133. Rel: 31 Jan 18
  1. For The Love Of Money (4:05)
  2. For The Love Of Money (disco dub) (4:14)
Review: Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", a one-off collaboration between producer Davitt Sigerson and reggae musician Mike Dorane, has long been considered something of a classic by those who like their disco to come with a big dose of dub-wise flavour. Here the instrumental O'Jays cover, which originally appeared on the Movers label in 1976, is given the remix treatment by long-time fans Mr Bongo. The superb A-side, in which Dorane's instrumental talents take centre stage, naturally comes accompanied by the frequently played Dub interpretation, a typically wild and bass-heavy affair that sounds like it was mixed "live" in one take in true Lee Perry/King Tubby style. If it's not already in your collection, it should be.

Review: The third Elaste release in a number of compilations from Germany's Compost label traverses the fine lines between Italo-disco and nu-disco territory, guided by former half of Zombie Nation, Dompteur Mooner. Influenced by acid tones, galactic flavours, and new wave, the compilation rides across sounds from The Pool to Queen Samantha and Pollyester, breaking taboos happily as it goes.

Review: We don't know who he is. We don't know what he has in store for the future. But boy are we hooked on Elegant Borzoi. Both originals are crystal clear in their scope and cosmic sheen. Chunky, slinky and bubbling with elements of disco, house, funk, all tied up with strong shades of Balearic; "Mystique" is a tropical charmer that nods its head to the dubby lushness coming from Norway 15 years ago while "Lawnmower Woman" fuses Italo with sleazy 80s funk with a purring, catlike sense of playfulness. Remix wise Woolfy and Projections HH fatten up the bassline and add a little star gazing charm while Project Sandro brings home the slo mo bacon. Delicious.

Cat: FLORENCE 008. Rel: 21 May 20
  1. New (6:58)
  2. Jungle (5:43)
Review: Since 2013 the Florence series of shadowy 12" singles from unknown artists has provided a steady string of contemporary reworks of notable - and in some cases, lesser-known - songs. This time round, the mystery producer involved has set his sights on New Order classic "Blue Monday", with A-side cut "New" delivering a pitched-down, beefed-up revision of the dancefloor classic that comes complete with fresh Clavinet notes and acid style motifs. Over on side B, "Jungle" is a wonderfully sweaty, bass-heavy affair in which the Jungle Brothers Todd Terry-produced hip-house anthem "I'll House You" is turned into a bustling, big room-friendly chunk of arms-aloft messiness.

  1. No More Games (4:13)
  2. Never Been Better (4:19)
Review: Since launching last year, the output of Canada's Outrun Records has proved to be as colourful and addictive as the legendary 1980s arcade game that inspired its name. Format 440's first single for the imprint is every bit as kaleidoscopic and funky as you'd expect - A side cut "No More Games" is particularly infectious, sounding like a combination of Roger Troutman's talkbox-sporting synth-funk and eight-bit arcade game soundtracks. Flipside "Never Been Better" is a little bolder melodically and undeniably warmer, with ear-catching piano riffs, guitars and positive synth chords rising above Linn Drum style beats and a killer electronic bassline.

  2. High Flames (6:42)
  3. Flash Burn (6:26)
Review: Verona-based Patrick "Twice" Gibin is making a habit of collaborating with nu-jazz and broken beat veterans. Having previously joined forces with one-time Sonar Kollektiv regular Clara Hill, this E.P sees him acquire the services of killer keys-man Kaidi Tatham of Bugz In The Attic fame. The latter's smart, jazz-funk influenced riffs are all over the sweet, gently soulful and wonderfully positive deep house A-side "Lights Out", but can also be heard on the woozy, broken beat-goes-boogie flex of "High Flames". "Flash Burn", another musically rich, organic house groover - this time complete with what sound like eyes-closed guitar solos - completes an excellent package.

  1. Since I Was A Little Girl (3:33)
  2. Straight Talk (3:28)
Review: For their latest dive into the depths of funk history, Athens of the North travels back to 1978 and the debut of John Hawes and Velma Bunch's obscure Hard Drivers project. The record initially appeared on Hawes' own short-lived imprint, and his since become a sought after 7" amongst serious collectors. "Since I Was A Little Girl" is a disco-era funk gem, with guest singer Vivian Lee providing a brilliantly confident vocal to compliment Hawes and Bunch's driving, horn-heavy backing track. On the flip you'll find original B-side "Straight Talk", a touching torch song full of harmony backing vocals, impassioned builds, and lyrics capable of melting even the stoniest of hearts.

Review: This really doesn't need any introduction does it? Arthur Russell's infamous and seminal Loose Joints compilation originally compiled back in 2013 gets a vinyl re-issue by West End on Record Store Day 2016. Yes, his undisputed disco anthem of ever "Is It All Over My Face (original 12" version)" indeed appears, not to mention the unreleased original female vocal version plus the full length and Larry Levan versions. If that was not enough, we've got three versions of "Pop Your Funk" and another three of "Tell You Today". Get your hands on a copy of this before it's too late!

  2. Da Ya Think I'm Turkish? (6:00)
  3. I'm Petula (6:48)
Review: Best known for offering up a mixture of brightly coloured nu-disco and synth-tastic disco-house, Luxxury has always had a lesser-known side hustle as a re-editor and bootleg remixer. It's this hat that he's working on "Luxxury Reworks Volume 2". Up first is "Uh Huh, I Like It", a rolling, house-style revision of a reggae-fired disco favourite smothered in chunky beats and filter sweeps. He turns his attention to a slightly lesser-celebrated disco gem on "Do Ya Think I'm Turkish?", successfully lightly tooling up a Moog-laden Middle Eastern cover version of Rod Stewart classic "Do You Think I'm Sexy?", before unleashing the EP's standout moment on side B. Chugging, tactile and more loved-up than an MDMA-fuelled swingers party, "I'm Petula" is as sweet an AOR disco edit as you'll hear all year.

  4. Boys Beware (Pale Blue Drum-A-Pella remix) (7:11)
Review: Berlin's Geoff Kirkwood, also known simply and boldly as Man Power, is back on France's Correspondent imprint with a series of remixes; these tunes are versions of the best cuts from his self-titled album that dropped at the tail-end of 2015. Moscoman proceeds to transform "Beilsteiner" into a wonky, euphoric house tune fit for the more daring of dance floors, whereas Suede goes for a poppy kind of vibe on his 80s take of "Ten". On Side B, Jmii heads down into the sonic abyss with his beautiful reinterpretation of "Hunting Swan", and "Boys Beware" is morphed into a minimal, progressive house excursion by Pale Blue, with his Drum-A-Pella version.

Review: Pat Mahoney and Dennis McNany's Museum of Love project has always been an enticing proposition. The duo's two singles to date, "Down South" and "Monotronic", tickled the fancy of all those with a penchant for wide-eyed, Balearic-leaning pop - all soft-focus electronics, shuffling rhythms and yearning vocals. This much-discussed debut album continues in a similar vein - albeit with a little more grittiness in places - with Mahoney doing his best Bryan Ferry impression over McNany's warm, loose and melodious production. It's a formula that guarantees great results, from the low-slung, disco-influenced shuffle of the trumpet-laden "The Who's Who Of Who Cares", to the classic DFA swagger of the raucous rock-out "The Large Glass".

Review: Here is the new project by Italian rapper, disc jockey and record producer Davide Bassi, better known as Bassi Maestro. His releases on North of Loreto are a return to the origins that raised him musically; a tribute to the decade of the 80s and the electro funk/soul sounds of that period - in a varied and super fresh journey. His next one on the label is an all-time soul and disco classic from the late 70s, actually, revisited and rearranged in pure 80's plastic flavor by Bassi for his new label project. The combination between that MJ vocal, the vocoder harmonies and the block rockin' beats makes this one serious party starter. Only available as a 7" exclusive release and limited to 200 copies worldwide.

Review: Brussels newcomer John Parm is showing some serious funk flex on this tasty new 7" for the ever more essential Outrun label, who now hit release number seven. Boogie, disco and soul all colour the squelchy bass lead grooves and dazzling synths of "No Soul Fo Sale" featuring Frase. He then links with Canadian Blazino for flipside "Dance With Me" for some old school vibes with its vocoder vocals. Whichever side you choose, these are red hot summer burners that will fill any floor and remain in memory thanks to their vital hooks and pop sensibilities.

Review: Second time around for "In Togetherness", a private press gem from 1977 that has recently become popular with dusty-fingered collectors of underground disco and soul. It was originally written, performed, produced and pressed by almost unknown singer Judy Pollak and Michigan-based backing band 33 1/3. This Athens of the North vinyl re-issue follows a recent CD edition by Japanese imprint P-Vine. Musically, there's much to admire throughout, from the sax-and-synths-laden disco stomp of "Mr DJ" and down low disco-funk headiness of "Fascinating", to the seductive sweetness of Pollack's breathy vocal on "Come With Me" and the sun-kissed breeziness of the brilliant "More Than Words".

  2. Sun Sign (6:20)
  3. Narcotic Luv (7:10)
Review: We last heard from Javi Redondo back in 2014. Then, he was delivering skewed electro on Meant Records. Two years on, he's joined Jennifer Cardini's Correspondant label, and returns with a trio of tracks that impressively widen his musical horizons. Opener "Summer On Repeat" is quietly sunny and positive, with rising and falling melodies, and acid lines, riding a sparse but space-filling midtempo, cosmic disco groove. In contrast, "Sun Sign" is a virtual star-shower of wonky synth-bass, off-key electronics and trippy melody lines, while "Narcotic Love" expertly fuses elements variously inspired by Italo-disco, electrofunk, and early Chicago house.

Review: "You're Gonna Want Me Back" was a hit in 1981 for Delia Renee, and with good reason. It's a fierce burner loaded with Philly strings, an early 80s stomp and Renee's formidable midrange performance - a defiant protest track to make anyone feel untouchable. Now that highly skilled disco edit wizard Moplen has got his mitts on the parts and teased out the track with two deadly versions for High Fashion. There's a straight-up "Disco Mix" on the A side which treats the original with care, and the "Moplen Reprise" on the flip which gets more adventurous with the ingredients, still keeping one foot firmly in the heart and soul of the track. Powerful stuff to set any dancefloor ablaze.
