Latent Magic EP
Latent Magic EP (12" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: FR 293. Rel: 04 Dec 23
Hold (5:56)
Latent Magic (6:45)
There It Is (5:43)
Review: New Zealander via Berlin Philippa's passion for house music, tireless commitment to her craft and ear for what makes a dancefloor tick is slowly but surely starting to pay off. With her recent release, 'Rainy Nights', on Slothboogie and 'Things I'd Like To Be' for Razor n Tape getting a lot of love, Philippa continues to deliver the goods, further lending remixes for Fat Freddy's Drop (The Drop) and Roach Motel (Faith). Here on the 'Latent Magic' EP we're treated to three new tracks highlighting Philippa's deft touch and musical approach to making interesting and leftfield house. Opener 'Hold' sets the tone with lush orchestral strings, crunchy drums and a bouncing analog synth bassline, while 'There It Is' umums hints of Mr Scruff with looping horn stabs, live drum grooves and rolling basslines. All in all, another mighty fine Philippa release recalling the early days of Freerange when artists such as Square One, Shur-i-kan and Jimpster were melding live musicians with electronics, for a refreshing, UK-centric take on house music.

MINERAL 08

Grain - "Does Jesus Have Buddha Nature?" (Someone remix) (9:58)
Logue - "Keep Me From Pain" (5:04)
Review: Mineral Cuts are casting their eye back on a couple of gems from the world of progressive house and trance with a sharp diggers instinct. This eighth release on the Kalahari Oyster Cult sub label continues the format of two obscure cuts from different artists, this time leading with Grain's 1998 trip-out 'Does Jesus Have Buddha Nature?'. Dubious spiritual framing aside, it's a spellbinding workout of throbbing low end, pulsing leads and pleasingly crunchy drum processing. Logue II's 'Keep Me From Pain' is an older affair from a hand-stamped white label in 1994, more house-oriented in its make up with some sprightly breaks and organ stabs that meld into a flowing, joyous rave gem.

H Haze - "La Fuerza" (6:35)
Review: Madrid producer and DJ Henry Saiz returns to top up the 32nd edition of the longstanding Balance DJ mix series - it's also his third appearance for the series to date. Spanning three discs, we hear from adjacent artists including Hal Incandenza, Karmon, Royksopp, Milio and NVSB: beginning with a pristine technosingular vision in downtempo ('I Know What You Are') and ending on a shufflier, higher-tempo, even quasi-Balearic, progressive-housey set of conclusions. Also crammed with exclusive, unreleased material, this isn't one fans or completists will want to miss.

Willow (6:09)
Breathe (6:12)
Masada (7:55)
River Dancers (5:22)
Review: CWPT's founder Palms Trax is next to coax some left of centre house goodness from the studio of Wallace following fine outings on the likes of Mule Musiq, Studio Barnhus and Rhythm Section. They usually come on his own label Tartan but have increasingly been heard all over the shop and we're glad about that because the more the merrier. 'Willow' is the sort of airy and uplifting melodic hose sound that will make whole crowds float on a cloud. 'Breathe' has the same levitating effect while 'Masada' is a slower sound with more patent chords and sinewy synths. 'River Dancers' is a steamy jungle roller with bird calls, whimsical melodies and a typical feel.

Rumore Bianco (6:10)
Illusion (6:12)
Rumore Rosso (6:03)
Synthesy (Acid dub) (6:08)
Review: Jacopo Latini is an Italian producer just breaking through with some choice releases on Mood Waves and Conceptual Moods. He's back on the former label with a lush new 12" of progressive house that leads in with the epic strains of 'Rumore Bianco' - the kind of track to get a crowd swooning thanks to its emotive, plaintive tone. 'Illusion' leans in a little more on the bassline, but there's no shortage of melodic flourishes on top and the subtle fleck of trance we're used to hearing in house music these days. 'Rumore Rosso' is a punchier affair, while 'Synthesy (Acid Dub)' sports a more explicitly 90s flavoured demeanour

Jive Talk - "Wizard's Slippers" (5:31)
Review: Semi Delicious go full flavour for this new various artists EP to mark their 15th vinyl outing. It's Demi Riquisimo & Michelle Manetti who kick off with the surging house stylings of 'All I Need,' a vocal laced peak time track with rushy feels. Corbi cooks up some rugged broken beats on the sleepy 'Kraken' then Lulah Francs & Nebari tap into he Peech Bosy classic for the vocal top line of their 'Don't Make Me Wait' and pair it with classic analogue drum clatter and gurgling bass brilliance. The flip has three more tunes including the rave of 'Nairless' and blissed out, sun up cut 'Release It' by Last Magpie. Jive Talk's 'Wizards Slippers' is a lovely electro bubbler to round out a diverse EP.

Just Can't Stop (Orca Space dub)
Review: As any heads reading this will know, Serpico's 'Just Can't Stop' is a gem of an EP from 1992. It's become expensive over the years so this reissue is a welcome one from the man born Carlos Baker. It's one of only five EPs he dropped in dropped over the space of around a decade but might be the best. First up is 'Just Can't Stop' (Incantation mix) - a warm cut full of surging synth waves that come on like a rush of narcotics while the pulsing vocal and lush strings douse you in soul. On the flip, the Orca Space Dub ups the heady qualities for a truly dreamy techno vibe.

In Too Deep (8:02)
In Deeper (7:48)
Review: Having dipped into the label's bulging archives earlier in the year to offer up a freshly remastered edition of 'Klarky Kat' by Gumbo (a rare collaboration between label bosses Attaboy and Swag's Chris Duckenfield), Toko has returned to the vaults for another essential reissue. 'In Too Deep' hails from 1997, when it marked the fifth release on the Sheffield-based imprint. Reflective of the sound played at legendary Sheffield deep and tech-house party Scuba, the title track is a sultry and saucer-eyed affair, with sustained synth-strings, tactile riffs and luscious melodic motifs wrapping around an hypnotic deep house-meets-tech-house groove. In contrast, 'In Deeper' is a much more minimalistic, tech-tinged affair, close in sound and tone to Swag productions of the period - all deep, undulating bass, effects-laden weirdo noises and locked-in beats.

Review: Global Underground is an enduring label and brand when it comes to dance music mix CDs. It has put out countless seminal entries in years gone by and now returns with Unique, a bumper collection across four sides of heavyweight neon green marbled vinyl from plenty of today's most interesting prog house producers. There are plenty of variations on that theme here, with Sasha Carassi going dark and tense, Florian Kruse exploring a more stripped back vibe and AFFKT offer lush synth arps that will wash over vast crowds in any main room on 'Coral.' A great snapshot of the current prog scene, then.

Review: Utopia Originals kicks off with a brilliant first real which revives some early progressive and trance sounds from 1993. They still sound right on point today which shows what a visionary Michel Spiegel aka Nuw idol really was. He himself describes this as "ancient galactic music decoded and restored for 4th dimension understanding". It is Alex Bradley who has put together this series of 12"s from the archive and you might have heard 'Restore' on a recent comp by Kalhari Oyster Cult. The entire EP has been remastered here in all its glory.

Review: Big hello to new label A Lifetime On The Hips which has a great name and great stamp on this limited edition first 12". It kick off with a various artists affair packed with full flavour cosmic tech. Abdul Raeva opens up with the twinkling melodies and sleek tech drum work of 'Invasive Overdrive Track' then Aldonna's 'Inner Elation' gets more deep with a steamy whispered vocal and shimmering drums. Review: Romanian artist Iuly.B makes a great label debut here on Metereze out of his home country. He serves up three of his painstaking produced and sublimely arranged minimal tech house rollers. 'Presence' goes first with its sci-fi motifs and wispy neon synths. 'Cruising' is a more crunchy and textured tune for the late night hours and then he strips things right back to a taught, pinging kick drum and sonorous bass on 'Exoplanet.' It's a climatic track is constantly, subtle evolving and rich in detail.

Review: An unusual techno palette from Jack Keo, who since 2017 has been a favourite across many UK labels, from Sodium to Art Of Dark. The EP 'Goonhilly Rattle' might imagine a space-age battle taking place on the grounds of the famous Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station in Cornwall, with its four tracks we hear left behind as its sonic aftermath. First, we venture on down into 'Bunker84', narrowly dodging the alien laser-zappers by way of a high-tech-house underground tunnel system. As soon as the coast clears, we venture above ground again, at which point we hear the twin grenades of bassy and acid techno respectively explode on 'Goonhilly Battle' and 'Tend To Run', before a closing, corrosively radioactive heater in the form of 'Soviet Sonar'.

Review: A classic from the mighty Hooj Choons back catalogue, Lustral's 'Everytime' gets a much welcome reissue here, featuring all the mixes from the original version of the release back in 1997. There's Nalin & Kane's sensual and evocative remix which is a true zeitgeist of the progressive house sound in the late '90s - if we've ever heard it. Label co-founder Red Cherry's saucer-eyed and bittersweet sunset breaks makes for an equally memorable remix too, as well as the sunny house vibes of the original mix featured last on the B side.

Getting Colder (Byron The Aquarius remix) (5:11)
Review: Scopic Records - a new UK label which aims to "bring newcomers and artists with backgrounds, regardless of their background or gender" - launches with a single by its founder New Digital Fidelity in collaboration with singer Monet. We get three nicely different mixes of 'Getting Colder' in all. The A-side is taken up by the club mix, a classic New York deep house groove with chunky pianos chords and Monet's confident vocal performance. The flip begins with the original, a slower version but still effortlessly groovy, bringing its soul, jazz, and R&B influences to the fore. US techno's man of the moment Byron the Aquarius completes the set by turning the track inside out with shuffling hats, snapping machinefunk snares and a bubbling bass, making it even more impressive by exposing its moving parts and giving them a neat polish.

Review: Very big large ups to Guy J for storing his Lost & Found lane to this, its 100th release. It is fitting that the boss himself takes charge of this one: he has long been a master of progressive house sounds and though that style has been in and out of favour over the years right now it is very much en vogue. He offers up two versions of his 'Lost & Found.' The A-side version is all deep and wavy beats, gentle percussive patter and Balearic chord work that is perfect for open-air dancing. On the flip is the Am mix, an even deeper, more stripped-back sound for star gazing and cosmic nights.

Review: Harrison BDP is a core part of the UK underground with an ever more expressive and unique sound. He lands on the E&X label out of Germany here with a brilliantly punchy and atmospheric EP of house. 'Far Away' opens up with silky but weighty drum loops and fr-sighted chords then Alex Neri flips it into a more bubbly and cosmically minded groove cruise. On the flip, 'Conflict Within' has a filthy bassline keeping busy underneath razor sharp tech house drums that really cut through. Last of all is the spaced out and wigged out broken beat trip of 'Hells Bells'.

Music For The Radical Xenomaniac: Hedonistic Highlights From The Lowlands 1990-1999 is a three-part series with each one offering up four sides of lush post-rave electronics that dips into influences from techno, electro, progressive, dance, pop and downtempo. Plenty of these artists are new names to us but the music is quality - from the lush deep house of The Connection Machine's opener 'Echoes From Tau Ceti' to the slick and emotive tech of 2000 & One's closing cut 'Crystal.'

Review: Tofistock roster member Myki delivers a hat-trick of heaters on their latest and greatest EP yet, 'Eamu'. Whipping up a rave-thunderstorm on the A-sider, 'EEE' is filled with juggling rhythms, crunchy stabs, and silkily sneaky basslines. The elegantly rude B-side, 'AAA', meanwhile, hears samples from the timeless 'UFO' by ESG, not to mention the artist's own masterful trademarks. This boutique toolpack is an essential firestarter and the first in Tofistock's new "sense-floor" dance series.

Review: Prepare to be shocked to your core with this new and electrifying first EP from the freshly launched High Voltage Music label. It comes from a production outfit of the same name about whom we know very little. And so to the tunes we turn - 'Feel Love' kicks off with slick and punchy tech house drums overlaid with a yearning vocal to up the emotional intensity levels. It is sure to do a fine job of livening up the floor, while 'NRG' then picks up with raw percussive clatter over a whacked out tech beat. Two top level tools.

Review: In the past few years Tom Ferreira has swiftly established his Fasme project as a strident voice in the field of emotionally-charged electro. Following a string of singles for labels like Craigie Knowes, Dream Ticket and Feel My Bicep, he's now delivering his debut album to Analogical Force. Bloom should hugely appeal to those who crave heart-swooning melodic lines in the midst of their snappy machine rhythms, but there's a full spectrum of moods explored as Ferreira glides from the staccato Moroder pulse of 'Pursuit' to the playful acid strut of 'Comete'. Throughout, the feels are placed front and centre of this instantly endearing record from a fast-rising talent.

Review: We're still not quite sure why fabric rebranded their much loved mix series because the fabric present series seems to be very similar in that it is unbound by genre and chases only the best DJs in the game. Saoirse is one of those and makes a fine entry here that is on the header end of the spectrum following on from efforts from the likes of Sherelle, TSHA and MCDE. Her functional, low slung sounds are perfect for late night moment slots in the groove with cuts from the likes of Luca Lozano, Rinse FM founder Geeneus and many more all making for a storytelling mix.

Review: Semi Delicious return for their sixteenth edition with the impressive 'Asylum Of Love' V/A, inviting faces old and new to the imprint. A label noted for bringing together impressive collections of talent, SEMID016 is no exception, with six separate contributions from Krywald & Farrer, Gallegos, Tatie Dee, Omar Smadar & DJ Gear, Scarlett O'Malley & label boss, Demi Riquisimo. The A-side welcomes Krywald & Farrer, Gallegos and Tatie Dee, kicking off with 'Seize The Source' from the aforementioned Krywald & Farrer, before label regular Gallegos tops things up with 'Asylum of Love', and finally, Dee's 'For My Niece'. The B brings the most jubilant of the bunch, 'Check One', while this tonal up-shift continues with 'Hey Party People', before finally closing on Demi's finishing touch that is a version of 'Rocking You Internally' from his own 'Mirage Over' EP, released on the same imprint. All quality house here.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Imagine! by Overlords of the UFO was a global US Progressive Trance hit when it was originally released in 1994 - number one on many underground dance charts for several weeks. Mixmag dubbed it "wicked" and other relevant mags gave it high accolades e.g. XLR8R. Imagine! is a collaboration between Anthony Barker and Lynn Serafinn, both trained musicians and analogue synth aficionados. Whirling Thru Time & Space Mix on Side A was inspired by a poem from 60's cult sci-fi author; Fredric Brown - and UFO Mix is a faster tempo remix of the former. Side B's Deeply Hypnotic Mix is a downtempo remix, incorporating some world music elements, and Surfin' UFO was a very limited licensed track that Billboard Magazine described positively and humorously as "campy and kitschy"

The German duo has mostly done so on this label which is where they return for a new album This Is Not Out Universe ahead of a few much anticipated tour dates next year. Review: Progressive house was always huge across Eastern Europe and so it is that this lush new offering comes from Estonian label Gestalt. Modex is at the buttons and opens with the twisted synth lines and multi-layered rhythm of 'Isometra' which is bright and endlessly energising. 'Enagic' has a more undulating groove that never lets you settle but more colourful synth lines and then 'Nairoosh' strips things back a bit to a more serene sound that is always on the rise. 'Flow State' shits down with the most prickly energy of the lot and more warped synths for heady excursions.

Review: Initially started as a 'long-range collaboration' during the global COVID-19 pandemic, Cooper Saver and Chris McIntyre's Inner Flight project was inspired by a heady mix of grandiose Canadian landcapes, Andrew Weatherall, the second summer of love and the "deeper corners of the 4AD catalogue". As this debut EP on Pacific Rhythm shows, it's a blueprint that guarantees warmth, sonic beauty, sunset and sunrise-ready soundscapes, and suitably loved-up club cuts. Following the slow-burn bliss of organic ambient opener 'Inner Flight', the pair cycles through acid-flecked, early 90s progressive house hypnotism (the stirring 'Explorer 3000'), dubby Balearic beats/dreamy IDM fusion ('Sonar Scanning'), mid-80s Factory Records leftfield electro-not-electro ('Channel Zero'), and chugging, delay-laden early morning colour (the chill out room friendly 'Rainbow Falls').

Giordano is already known amongst those who know as a fine DJ and producer, as the uninitiated will now discover with this top label debut. He explores fusing of an array of styles form techno to prog, trance to Italo, breakbeat to electro on an EP that is thoroughly of the moment. all the sounds are sci-fi in design and futuristic in mood with compelling grooves and plenty of great designs that work as well on head as they do heel.

Review: Spencer Brown returns to his own diviine label with the new album Equanimity, which is an ode to positivity and uplifting electronic music that wears its heart on its sleeve. Soul-warming single 'Awu Wemadoda' is impossible not to love, frankly, and is a greater primer for the whole album which he says was written during some challenging periods from the epidemic to the death of his grandmother to his coming out as gay. The melodies are exquisite, the deep rolling grooves a perfect vehicle to convey his pain and collaborators like Qrion, Luttrell and Wilt Clayborne all do a fine job of making this a lovely full-length.

Review: It was only going to be a matter of time before this Euros-trance-dance classic got a reissue. We're here for it frankly, and it sits perfectly at ease with the current trend of trance and progressive sounds to be back one vague., SASH! were originators of this sound that saw huge chart success back in the day and all these years later 'Encore Une Fois' still does the trick - it has the iconic melodic riffs and rasping bassline with the sultry female vocals and muted acid. La Casa Di Tokapi mixes it into something more raw with Italo style melodies and a Future Breeze mix is the most trance-y of the lot. Merlyn & Chuck Mellow mix that cut loose on wild progressive energy.

Jhobei is part of that revolution and lands here with a fresh four tacker that cones on nice blue vinyl, with 'Slink 'N Slide' - a throwback sound with rave overtones and rapping basslines that never quit - and 'Viral Vendor' (Trance mix) among the rigid groove highlights.

I Love You (5:41)
I Hate You (6:09)
Review: German progressive house duo Andhim specialize in bringing out the genre's sentimental side, and their latest single 'I Love You' is a masterful case in point. Describing their sound as "super house", the pair evidently only choose the most serene and gut-punching sounds and samples going in, and 'I Love You' exemplifies this, with its knife-edge, repetitive vocal and swellingly pink chords, which recall the French house climaxes of The Paradise or Daft Punk, and/or the more recent, well-rounded post-10s uplifts of Bicep. Of course, the B-side must provide the mirror image, on which the equally powerful emotion of hatred is explored. Hatred isn't exactly a house music go-to, but the psychologist in us feels compelled to remind the reader that love and hatred, aren't binary opposites, and are closer together than we often think!

Review: In his previous work, and particularly on the Butter Sessions-released 2021 album 'Drinking From The Mirage', Western Australian producer Guy Contact has proved adept at evisiting the more melodious, hallucinatory and 'progressive' end of mid 1990s dance music. He continues that trend of his latest EP, which marks his debut for X-Kalay. Title track 'Out Of My Head (Into My Body)' sets the tone by channeling the spirit of Guerilla Records circa 1994 - all gentle, psychedelic acid lines, throbbing bass, shuffling beats, spacey chords and bubbly electronic motifs - before the Perth-based producer opts for a sunrise-ready breakbeat flex on the brilliant 'Sacred Mist'. Over on the reverse, 'Amygdala Tongue Wobble' is a trippy, trance-inducing treat complete with a spine-tingling breakdown, while 'Optimystic' is a warming, saucer-eyed downtempo treat. Loved-up lusciousness.
