Uh-Ah Song (3:31)
Otoma Da Naba (4:06)
Review: A hugely exciting and thoroughly danceable new 7" from Florence Adooni, blowing any other artist who could even remotely hope to stake a worthy claim to contemporary highlife out of the park. Following up her debut single 'Fo Yelle' on Philophon, the Ghanaian Frafra Soul singer returns backed by an eight-member troupe, made up of young talents from the highlife scene of Kumasi, Ghana. 'Uh Ah Song' and its inverse counterpart 'Otoma Da Naba' are slick, clean and joyous daytime jaunts, with the former track lyrically meditating on familial and childhood themes while effortlessly pinning down a difficult-to-maintain-for-most uptempo highlife backbeat and improv. The B-side, meanwhile, pays tribute to the supreme terrestrial creator central to Adooni's native Frafra community, and centres on a heptatonic electronic, nigh acid riff and lo-fi texture with a "je ne sais qoui" that, in our view, renders it the tune of the year so far.

Review: Arooj Aftab's Night Reign is a stunning trip into the depths of the night, where inspiration thrives. Departing from themes of loss in her previous work, Aftab crafts an album rich with renewal and romance. Collaborations with artists like Cautious Clay and Moor Mother add layers to the lush soundscape, creating a cinematic experience. Each track, from the haunting 'Autumn Leaves' to the soulful 'Bolo Na,' weaves together to form a narrative of surrender and transformation. Aftab's voice, accompanied by intricate instrumentation, guides listeners through the darkness, offering moments of introspection and possibility. Wood Blues (part 4) (15:00)
Review: Pianist Pat Thomas and [Ahmed], paying homage to bassist/oudist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, deliver Wood Blues, an engaging album recorded live at the 2022 Counterflows Festival. This marks their first original offering, departing from previous reimaginings of Abdul-Malik's works. Featuring a lineup including Joel Grip on bass, Antonin Gerbal on drums, and Seymour Wright on alto sax, the focus is on Thomas and Seymour's dynamic interplay. The album kicks off with a nod to tradition, with a walking bass line setting the stage before diving into dense, discordant saxophone and piano structures. Thomas's percussive piano style drives the rhythm, while Seymour's saxophone adds a layer of intense, wailing harshness. Together, they push the boundaries with contrapuntal harmonies and bursts of dissonance, offering non-stop brain food for listeners.

Review: Monty Alexander's 80th birthday album is a poignant tribute, featuring iconic compositions from World War II alongside original works. With his characteristic pianistic finesse, Alexander navigates between poetry and vitality, delivering emotionally charged performances. Tracks like 'I'll Never Smile Again' and 'Smile' evoke the wartime spirit, while Alexander's originals, such as 'D-Day (Just Wait)' and 'River of Peace', delve into the complexities of conflict and resolution. Recorded in Paris with bassist Luke Sellick and drummer Jason Brown, the album captures the essence of a live performance, featuring Alexander's enduring warmth and musical talents. As tensions persist in today's world, Alexander's music serves as a call for reflection and unity, reminding us of the lessons learned from history.

Highlights include 'Caravan' and 'You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To' and the album closes with the original track 'Ballon de peut-etre.' Additional contributors include guitarist Jeff Parker and pianist Larry Goldings and a tour has also been announced to support the album.

Review: Black Ruby was the superb sophomore long player from the wondrous soul singer Ruby Andrews. It first appeared on the Zodiac label in 1972 and didn't give rise to any big hits but that didn't stop it from becoming a favourite with those who know. This reissue saves you the financial damage of copping an original and sounds superb from the opening lushness of '(I Want To Be) Whatever It Takes To Please You' to the lung-busting vocal expression of 'You Made A Believer Out Of Me' via heart aching blue-eyed sounds of 'My Love Is Comin' Down'.

Review: 'Anything Goes Vol. 7' the latest vinyl release EP from Rollover Edit Service, a subsidiary of Anything Goes, is back. Delve into the Italian music scene of the 70s and early 80s with four meticulously edited gems; all four versions here are billed as originals, credited to contemporary producers' hands (Black Pomade, Pablot, etc.) yet are heavily built around each respective sample. Our highlight is the hard-won, twangy B4, 'Prima O Poi Ti Prendero'.

Review: Stones Throw has tapped up the brilliant psychedelic jazz group Apifera for a second album to follow on from the greatness of their debut. That once came back in 2021 in the form of Overstand, which was a widescreen and cultural mix of all manner of weird and wonderful sounds. Now, Keep Teh Outside Open builds on that and finds keyboardist Yuval Havkin and Nitai Hershkovits, drummer Amir Bresler and bassist Yonatan Albalak all colliding Israeli folk, Afrobeat, post-rock and jazz into richly colourful and absorbing sound worlds full of lush broken beat grooves.

Review: Cool as you like jazz cats Badbadnotgood have more than done their bit in helping to shape the contemporary jazz revival with a number of great albums and even a fine compilation of their inspirations and influences. IV is one of their most acclaimed in recent times which is why it now gets a reissue on double white gatefold vinyl. Guests Sam Herring, Colin Stetson and Kevin Celstin amongst more all feature, as do plenty of the US group's lush broken beats and nu-jazz instrumentals. Well worth coping if you missed out the first time around.

Review: The great jazz trumpeter Chet Baker recorded Broken Wing in Paris in December 1978 and despite what he was going through personally at the time, it remains a showcase of his undiminished talent. The album highlights exceptional chemistry between the main man and his ensemble which featured pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark, and drummer Jeff Brillinger. They deliver remarkable renditions of Richie Beirach's title track, Wayne Shorter's 'Black Eyes,' and Baker's own 'Blue Gilles.' Baker shines on the trumpet and delivers a graceful vocal performance on 'Oh You Crazy Moon' making this rare but now reissued LP an essential addition to your collection.

Review: Saci Perere by Banda Black Rio is a Brazilian jazz-funk masterpiece that deserves a rediscovery this summer. Pioneers of the soul-funk movement in Brazil, Banda Black Rio, led by saxophonist Oberdan Magalhaes, effortlessly blend samba, jazz, and Brazilian rhythms, evoking comparisons to other strong 70s bands. This reissue satisfies the demand for the rare original album, delivering a protest-triumphant mix of mellow, tropical, and uplifting melodies. Tracks like 'Miss Cheryl' epitomize the album's infectious energy, with its soulful groove captivating London dancefloors in the 80s. Saci Perere is a must-listen for fans of Brazilian jazz-funk, offering a melodic, playful, and atmospheric journey that is both nostalgic and timeless. It's a love letter to the lush sounds of Brazilian music, guaranteed to get more fans as more people hear this phenomenal album.

Review: By the time they released Saci Perere in 1980, carioca outfit Banda Black Rio were amongst Brazil's biggest dance music stars - an outfit whose blends of samba, jazz, disco, funk and MPB moved the heart and feet of the country's dancers. The set remains a timeless Brazilian classic - hence this much-deserved CD reissue. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the leisurely sundown headiness of 'Saci Perere', and horn-heavy jauntiness of 'Melissa', to the funky samba-jazz fusion of 'Subindo O Morro', synth-laden downtempo sunshine of 'Amor Natural' and the atmospheric Latin disco-funk of 'Broto Sexy'. An album that should be in every Brazilian music fan's collection.

Review: One of the key record producers and pushers of the 60s-70s Philly Sound - which upended the generic norms of soul and r&b to establish a brasher and more bombastic sound - Thom Bell has gone down in time as the holy son of soul, forming one part of its so-called holy trinity along with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. This new compilation is an exciting retrospective on the man's best works, bringing greater-known groundbreakers - Delfonics' 'Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time', Stylistics' 'Betcha By Golly, Wow' - with lesser-spotted lovables from the likes of Nancy Wilson's 'Joe' to Deniece Williams' 'Silly'. Bell was known for his introduction of the celeste, the French horn and the harpsichord to soul music - all can be heard throughout the comp at various points, testifying his staunch commitment to expanding upon an already established sound.

Review: Woody Bianchi, renowned funk digger and DJ, embarks on yet another archaeological record collection excavation, unearthing yet another volume of badass funk from the adjacent era of disco that emerged in the 70s and 80s. This is an in depth compilation series to say the least: the tracks are all examples of funk greats which reflected certain motifs from the disco explosion that came after it - even "James Brown had to take notice of the Saturday Night Fever". Several hard-to-find gems appear among ubiquitous classics, among extensive liner notes by Woody himself.

Review: Black Decelerant, a collaboration between Khari Lucas (Contour) and Omari Jazz, explores spiritual jazz through modern tones, weaving sonic reflections on Black existence, life and grief, expansion and constraint, and the personal versus the collective. Their eponymous debut album fosters a serene refuge amidst societal turbulence and aims to transcend fleeting moments. Conceived from an intuitive process, the album emerged from remote sessions spanning six months in 2020, bridging South Carolina and Oregon. Improvised instrumentals and sampled productions became conduits for their inner dialogues and offered solace during existential crises amid lockdowns and social unrest in the US.

Rhythm's Got Soul

Rhythm's Got Soul (Lose Control) (4:11)
Rhythm's Hot (Afro instrumental) (4:13)
Review: Rhythm's Got Soul is a sonic trip back to the fever-pitched disco era, where Asabi Goodman's powerhouse vocals and Geoff Boardman's dynamic production converge to create an electrifying dancefloor experience. Bursting through the stratosphere with all frequencies blazing, the track treats listeners to pitched horns, filtered drums, and sultry vocals, reinforced by Andrew 'Bigfoot' Leslie's everlasting bass. Momentum builds with Dave VHS's rhythm guitar and vamp keys, accompanied by hectic percussion, culminating in a groove that's both syncopated and loose, thanks to the MPC4000 sample treatment by The Soulicitors. On the flip side, 'Rhythm's Hot' (Afro Instrumental) takes listeners on an Afrocentric trip, with a relentlessly persuasive percussion groove reminiscent of Midnight Marauders chords. Well-timed transitions spread smooth like butter, weaving elements like A Taste Of Honey basslines into an instrumental strut that builds to a disco-fever crescendo. It's a monster cut that keeps the energy high and the dancefloor moving. Asabi Goodman's vocal versatility, effortlessly shifting from sweet and soulful to commanding and powerful, adds depth and emotion to each track, while Geoff Boardman's production shines through, blending samples and live instrumentation into a resonating dynamic disco experience. 'Rhythm's Got Soul' is a standout collaboration that begs to be checked out.

Rhythm's Got Soul (Lose Control) (4:11)
Rhythm's Hot (Afro instrumental) (4:13)
Review: 'Rhythm's Got Soul' is the highly anticipated collab record between singer-songwriter Asabi Goodman and producer/arranger Geoff Boardman aka. Blunted Stylus. A testament to the enduring efficacy the mixture of belter vocals and powerhouse production, 'Rhythm's Got Soul (Lose Control)' and its contrapuntal 'Afro Instrumental' make for raunchy, impudent soul-dance divinations, with booming kicks n' claps, felt-out breaks, and longing harmonies making up their effusive bulk. The B is particularly great, making use of spare components and one-off vocal injunctions to "come and dance with me."

Review: Medellin-based American Bosq - a renowned musical fusionist with a passion for all things tropical - has been working with Benin-based Nigerian guitarist/vocalist Kaleta on and off for 12 years, with the pair delivering a series of sensational singles. No Be Today is the duo's first collaborative full length, with previous singles being joined by previously unheard cuts across two slabs of wax. As you'd expect given their previous work, much of the music joins the dots between various Afro-Latin styles and similarly vintage Black American dance music genres such as disco, funk and soul. It's an effervescent and effortlessly brilliant set all told, with highlights including pitched-down Afro-funk number 'Ose', glorious Afro-disco number 'Sonayon', Afrobeat update 'Ipade' and scorching Latin dancefloor workout 'Miselou'.

Review: They say that where there is repetition, there is unfinished business; that where there is a broken record, there is a will for that breakage to be attended to. So too does the eponymous alias of Jake Alias, The Brkn Record, know this. The Architecture Of Oppression Part 2 is Ferguson's next album for the righteous future jazz project; an earnest admixture of spoken word and slam poetry set against ambient jazzscapes and cinematic post-noir shades. Showcasing the manifold talents of wordsmiths the likes of Toyin Agbetu and Ugochi Nwaogwugwu, both of whom ponder the nature of freedom as it exists in its best articulated form today - the continued articulation of freedom being the driving force of history - The Architecture Of Oppression Part 2 deploys a righteous infrasound to deconstruct the edifices that impinge on this freedom, brick by brick.

Review: Gustav Brom's 'Calling Up The Rain' from his 1976 album Gustav Brom Plays for You Pop Jazz and Swing is a dancefloor gem that seamlessly blends big band jazz with a Latin groove, featuring a splendid organ and trumpet solos alongside a screeching guitar solo. Panorama Records' reissue of this track reaffirms the label's commitment to unearthing and reintroducing hidden musical treasures to new audiences. Review: Brother Jack McDuff's Moon Rappin is a bold exploration of funky and spacey soundscapes, marking a departure from his usual soul-jazz style. While the album may not adhere to traditional jazz norms, its fusion of funk rhythms with jazz improvisation showcases McDuff's versatility and willingness to experiment. Tracks like 'Flat Backin' and the title track blend jazz flutters over a funk foundation, creating a dynamic and engaging listening experience. With its heavy wah guitar and top-notch drumming, the album successfully bridges the gap between jazz and funk, offering a glimpse into the progressive musical trajectories of the era. In hindsight, Moon Rappin emerges as an unintentional precursor to the funk and jam music that would follow, with its spacey soundscapes hinting at the psychedelic funk to come. McDuff's adventurous spirit and willingness to push boundaries make Moon Rappin a noteworthy and influential record that deserves recognition for its role in shaping the musical landscape of its time.

James Brown's appropriately entitled Night Train - Mighty Instrumentals album is a high-class assembly of plenty of potent, hard-hitting funk as well as more tender and slow-burning soul sounds. These timeless, loveably lo-fi joints have plenty of low end heft to cut through modern dance floras while also offering up some authentic and original funk allure.
