White Hot (7")
Cat: JAL 287V. Rel: 15 Nov 18
  1. Basement Freaks - "White Hot" (feat Kylie Auldist - Basement Freaks remix) (3:39)
  2. John Turrell - "Won't Get Fooled Again" (Basement Freaks remix) (4:20)
Review: Fizzing funkateers Basement Freaks can usually be relied upon to bring the dancefloor goods. That's certainly the case on this dancefloor-focused seven-inch. On the A-side they rework one of their own classic cuts, offering a punchier and heavier take on 2016 Kylie Auldist collaboration "White Hot". Rich in flash-friend funk guitars, crunchy breaks and life-affirming horns, their new revision is undoubtedly more DJ-friendly than the original album version. Turn to the flip to hear their tidy new take on Smoove collaborator John Turrell's 2013 cut "Won't Get Fooled Again", which they cannily refurbish as a wobble bass-propelled chunk of P-funk flavoured dancefloor soul.

  9. Resonate (3:47)
  10. Give Me A Signal (feat Barns Courtney) (4:05)
Review: Since defining the band's hybrid rock-rave sound with 1994's "Music For The Jilted Generation" and 1997's "The Fat of the Land", Prodigy main man Liam Howlett has largely stuck to his guns. He is, after all, incredibly good at what he does, and the formula has given us a string of bombastic, full-throttle singles and albums that have lasted the test of time. "No Tourists", Howlett and company's first full-length in three years, offers plenty of trademark festival-friendly workouts, hard-wired dancefloor smashers and fuzzy, all-action cuts. Judged on these terms, it's a triumph. Fans of the band's trademark brand of slamming sonic hedonism will love it.

Needs 005 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: NNFP 005. Rel: 12 Nov 18
  1. DJ Normal 4 - "Return Of The Hooligans" (9:55)
  2. Red Axes - "Treacksheni" (6:23)
  3. Hodge - "Signal" (5:38)
Review: Needs is back with its fifth installment of charity-raising goodness from some seriously quality producers. This time the gauntlet is thrown down by the increasingly prolific DJ Normal 4, who wields some of his signature breakbeats over a cheeky synth that nods to Da Hool for a dark and deadly roller. Israeli duo Red Axes pop up fresh from outings on !K7 and Phantasy Sound for the worldly percussion and mystical atmosphere of "Treacksheni" before Bristol bass-wielding techno titan Hodge finishes the package off with the stunning, dramatic undulations of "Signal," making this a collection of tracks that all feed into the same vein of rhythmically adventurous, moody club music.

Carousel EP (140 gram vinyl 12" + insert)
Cat: WSR RC1. Rel: 12 Nov 18
  1. Siren (7:03)
  2. Innocent (7:06)
  3. Carousel (6:42)
  4. Keeper (7:22)
Review: Irish producer Ruff Cherry has so far left a small trail of breadcrumbs for any seekers switched on enough to follow, from an early 12" on A Sagittariun's Elastic Dreams to a pair of singles on Midgar, but now the mysterious artist lands on the increasingly intriguing Well Street label and the results are fantastic. "Siren" is an ear-snagging trip through driving but non-standard beat formations shot through with a dubby melancholy, while "Innocent" heads into weirder territory with more audacious sound design and plenty of voluminous bass swells. "Carousel" keeps things fractured and bleepy, while "Keeper" focuses on tribal percussive intonations and a brooding atmosphere to get fully immersed in.
