Review: "After the interruption PS is back. This time with the tropically-balearic EP by Moscow debutant Aleceo , who has changed his organised top-manager, live with a slow 808 tempo, Juno chords and microphone in the studio on the beach of magic island of Bali. With the magnetic remix, by Tokyo based maestro Max Essa, this pacific jam becomes a perfect, vinyl only slice of endless summer.

Afro Discoteca (Soundtrack) (limited 12" repress) (1 per customer)

  1. Afro Voodoo (3:50)
  2. Afro Darkness (3:18)
  3. Afro Discoteca (3:10)
  4. Afro Sentiment (3:09)
Review: The most famous whistler in cinema (so arguably the most famous whistler in the world), Alessandro Alessandroni has contributed to cinema, TV and music with as much influence as his old friend and collaborator Ennio Morricone. He was also making some incredibly innovative electronic compositions on the side, it would seem... These four variations were found in an old archive in his African home and have never, before now, been heard before. From the densely-layered spaghetti-flavoured "Afro Voodoo" to the soft sultry swoons of "Afro Sentiment" by way of the sheer dancefloor pump of "Afro Discoteca", this is a truly remarkable find for Four Flies. Made all the more poignant due to his recent passing, too. You know what to do.

Review: While floors still burn from "Mapping" on Cin Cin earlier this year, "I Can Still See You" sees Gacha return to his more ambient, introspective and eclectic pastures on this extensive show-stopping, sense-blurring five track EP. "River" glistens with gentle ebbs and flows, "Saysea" insists with a lush jazzy break while "Reflection" trembles with just the right tech tendencies without getting too heavy for itself. Elsewhere "Through The Glass" is a straight cinematic trip back to the world he forecast in Two Sunsets while "Advice" closes with a moment of broken beat poetry. As long as Gacha Bakradze can see us, we can hear him. This has to be a good thing.

  2. Virage (Ruf Dug extension) (8:46)
  3. Guam (3:44)
  4. Guam (Deep 88 remix) (6:15)
Review: IIB next release comes from French duo Baptiste & Pierre. 2 tracks of warm tropical goodness. Virage is a deep mellow afro tinged tropical workout. Muted guitar hook and nature sounds conjuring up far flung deserted beaches. Ruf dug beefs it up a touch and moves it indoors giving it a more afterhours feel. The second track has the same evocative feel as Virage with added atmospheric pads and a bouncy melody. Like a closing track on an 80's road movie. Full of emotion. Italian maestro Deep 88 creates a truly authentic slice of early ninetoes deep dreamy house. Perfectly wrapping the original in warm analogue drums. Another quality release from IIB.

  2. Anjali Reverse (Pharaohs remix) (5:59)
  3. Dexy's Alrobe (Orson remix) (5:36)
  4. Adios (Diva remix) (7:12)
Review: Italic has been representing the electronic scene in Cologne and surrounding areas since before the turn of the century, playing house to stylistically ambiguous outfits such as Kreidler, Stabil Elite and the many different projects of Stefan Schwander. Last year saw Italic usher in the BAR project of Stabil Elite's Lucas Croon and Christina Irrgang, with their self-titled LP turning out a sharply informed blend of new wave, synth pop and the finest in German kosmische traditions. To accompany the album, Italic have called on a cast of artists specifically split between Dusseldorf and Los Angeles to remix BAR. Pharoahs take "Anjali Reverse" and turn it into a gently lilting Balearic vignette, while noted German dubstepper Orson nudges "Dexy's Alrobe" into a spacious half-step chiller. Diva Dompe, daughter of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins no less, creates a bewitching version of "Adios" that sounds beamed straight out of Sunday morning, but for pure flair and unmistakable groove Wolf Muller's take on "BAR Theme" has us especially excited!

  1. 200
  2. 200 (Khidja remix)
  3. 200 (Asphodells remix)
  4. 200 (Asphodells dub)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Especial is delighted to welcome Baris to the roster. Known for his edit series of obscure Turkish Psychedelic, Rock and Disco, here he takes the producer's chair to present "200". Working with musicians and singers to create a completely original production. The song's message for equality (of the sexes) highlights the bigotry and backward political and religious boundaries his country faces and acts as a siren to the current troubles. Handed to Emotional Recordings over 5 years ago but with no label to release it at that time, now we are delighted to be able to release 200's message. The original is backed with remixed from new production duo Khidja, as well as East London's finest, The Asphodells. Teaming up with guitarist Balabas, Romania's Khidja turn in a deep and introspective interpretation mixing their own heavy eastern influences, while the B-side sees Weatherall and Fairplay don their Asphodells mantle for two renditions that firmly lay it before the ALFOS alter. With artwork (by Jamie Paton) highlighting the struggle for fairness and freedom in his homeland, we hope the release can be seen as a support for their tribulations and highlight the talent that lays East.

  1. Schopenhauer's Garden (4:50)
  2. Emile (2:51)
  3. Mokusho
  4. Lysander
Review: According to International Feel boss Mark Barrott, Music For Presence is an attempt to broaden the evocative, downtempo sound he's been pursuing for the last few years. There's certainly a wider palette of influences on show, with opener "Shopenhauer's Garden" adding fluid synth solos to a backing track that doffs a cap to 1970s German synthesizer greats such as Tangerine Dream. The humid and sticky ambience of "Emile" sounds like Finis Africae jamming with Steve Hillage, while "Mokusho" blends cascading, life-affirming synthesizer motifs with spaced-out electronic beats and glistening chords. Closer "Lysander", with its bubbly electronics, cascading trumpet and impeccable piano work, could have come from the studio of Music From Memory regulars Gaussian Curve.

Review: Joe Claussell doing what Joe Claussell does best... Smashing the spiritual dickens out of us with unique fusions. "Aye Ye" is the dancefloor-focussed spell, all urgent and heavily layered with loopy insistency, powerful harmonies and roaring horns. Both versions of "Goddess Of A New Dawn" take off where the 2009 versions left us; at home on the savanna, breathing the air of our ancestors, soothed by warm harmonies, glistening instrumentation and a powerful sense of positivity. Don't sleep on Sacred.

Extended Away (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: SEN 012. Rel: 11 Sep 17
  1. Extended Away (6:55)
  2. New Aged (7:29)
Review: As if his Bear Funk album Back To Business wasn't quite enough sonic silver for the summer, Cali conjurer returns with this sublime 12" on Rollmottle's Sentrall. Presented on clear vinyl, both cuts tickle and tease with BB's signature ebb and flow synth aesthetic. "Extended Away" is a maze of loops that canon with a sweet washing affect without losing the focus of the groove while "New Aged" hits with more of a springy hook, vibrant synths and strong sense of uplift throughout. Both heavily textured yet spacious and unhurried, once again it's business as usual for everyone's favourite broker.

  4. Abends (4:24)
Review: Once again, Music From Memory has dug deep for inspiration. Very few will have come across the original 1987 pressing of Ich Traume So Leise, a long-forgotten collaborative album that brought together trumpet player Heinz Becker, songwriter Karl-Heinz Stegmann, and poet Isabel Zeumer. Predictably, though, the tracks which the Dutch label has chosen to reissue are exceptionally good. "Mein Tanzlied", for example, features Becker's meandering trumpet lines and Zeumer's eyebrow-raising spoken word vocals seemingly drifting over an intoxicatingly funky, mid-80s dancefloor groove, while "Dir" is a seriously atmospheric chunk of beatless jazz poetry. Flip for the Balearic electro-funk of "Der Schnupfen" and the languid, new age ambience of "Abends".

Let's Talk (12")
Cat: BEGIN 08. Rel: 21 Mar 17
  1. Let's Talk (4:48)
  2. Aight (6:20)
  3. Cut The Paste (4:56)
Review: James Holroyd's Begin project has been responsible for some of the most magical Balearic music of the last seven years. We say last seven years; Let's Talk is actually the first Begin EP since 2014. It gathers together three tracks that sit somewhere between dubbed-out re-edits and original productions. The title track sets the tone, wrapping jazzy guitar solos, becalmed piano motifs and spoken word snippets around an intoxicating, jazz-fuelled downtempo groove. "Aight" sees Horoyd getting busy with delay-laden old school house vocal snippets, woozy chords and a languid broken beat rhythm, while standout flipside "Cut The Paste" is a trippy, pitched-down chug-fest rich in ghostly chords, fuzzy synth stabs, mutilated modem noises and a druggy arpeggio style bassline.

  3. Garden Interlude (4:26)
  4. Into The Fun (4:43)
Review: It was probably only a matter of time before Love International chiefs Dave Harvey (also boss of Futureboogie Recordings) and Tom Paine launched a label. Fittingly, the imprint's first release, from James Holroyd's Balearic-minded Begin project, is as magical, sun-kissed and life affirming as their Croatia-based festival. Like Holroyd's previous Begin releases, the four tracks showcased here are wonderfully warm, glassy-eyed and loved-up. We're particularly enjoying the languid alien synths, jazzy guitars and rubbery bass of "Wood Trees" and the gentle, Bossa-infused shuffle of "Day Pulse", though the dub-wise Balearic house bliss of "Garden (Interlude)" and lounge style jauntiness of "Into The Fun" are also both superb. Basically, it's fantastic from start to finish.

  1. Better Man (Craig Bratley remix) (4:47)
  2. Better Man (Craig Bratley instrumental remix) (4:44)
Review: Here's a question for you: What happens when you take a track by a British power trio heavily influenced by blues and psychedelia, and get a master of wayward, left-of-centre Balearica to remix it? You get the latest 12" missive from Claremont 56, which sees Bella Figura's "Better Man" reworked twice in impressive fashion by Magic Feet boss Craig Bratley. If you are familiar with Bratley's output for s It Balearic, Bird Scarer and Tsuba, you know the man breathes cosmic goodness and his work on Bella Figura's track offers a subtle new version that loses none of Justin Gartry's bluesy poignancy whilst adding a sparsely treated beat and plenty of low lying studio trickery.

  1. Elle Et Moi (vocal version) (7:32)
  2. Elle Et Moi (instrumental version) (7:28)
Review: Although he released a couple of albums and a smattering of singles during a ten-year career, Max Berlin is arguably only remembered for sleazy 1987 single "Elle et Moi". The track has long been considered something of a left-of-centre anthem amongst DJs who dig Italo-era European disco. This timely reissue pairs the now well-known vocal version - where Berlin does his best Serge Gainsbourg impression over bubbly synths, eyes-closed guitar solos, bongo-heavy percussion and post-disco orchestration - with the lesser-known instrumental take. This is effectively a DJ-friendly Dub; the influence of dub reggae productions can be heard in Berlin's use of delay-laden harmonica lines amongst the twinkling Rhodes keys, bumped-up beats and sweeping synth chords.

"Tokyo 1988" stands out with its perfect lashings of boogie rubbed into the joints, while "Kick The Burger" slows things right down for a cool and deadly cruise through electro funk of the highest order.

Review: Uber Recordings' latest release see the legendary Bing Ji Ling make an appearance. See Me Through featuring the sweet vocals of Diane Birch is a sunkissed slice of California soul. A beautiful heartfelt love song oozing quality. Live instrumentation and a tight arrangement creating a real classic song. The second track, the Romanowski remix of Thought Our Love Was Strong is something a little different. Tropical digital reggae vibrations all over Bing's sweet soulful smokey vocals.and bluesy guitar. West Coast Collie weed poolside stylee.
The B side is Coyote's reworking of See Me Through. Throbbing disco sub bass loops and dubbed out vocal samples with extra percussion and funky guitars layering over house beats build up to a vocal break down, before dropping back in with all guns blazing. Big smiles and dancing guaranteed.

Review: New York's Quinn Luke aka Bing Ji Ling is always up to some crazy shit. Whether it's far-out strains of exotica, electronic folk, or even some straight-up hill-billie funk, the nomadic artist is always one to look out for. He's up on Spain's excellent Lovemonk label, perennial leaders in leftfield disco and balearica, with the raunchy, funk-tastic guitar riffs of "Twilight", a tune that is so cool and laid-back it could be enjoyed by pretty much all walks of life. There's three version, though, all by Jose Manuel; the main remix drops in a house beat and something of a Latino sound, the dub goes deeper into the bass elements of the mix, and the Voyage Voyage mix takes the listener on a more daring journey, backed by a progressive edge. We love it.

Review: Originally released in 1999, the cultish reputation of the mysterious Blindboy's sole offering to the world has attained it a high second hand value, and so Archeo Recordings have done the right thing and actioned a reissue. Ruckus In Lo Fi is steeped in Balearic guitar tones, downbeat hip hop cuts and forays into sumptuous jazz funk. There's also a remix from Joe Morris, who fashions a brooding, epic remix of "I Dream" loaded with simmering tension without losing the funky warmth of the original. With all kinds of mellow pouring out of this one, any stone cold chillers out there won't want to sleep on this one.

Review: Bonnie & Klein can often be found cruising round labels like Music For Dreams and Leng, imparting tender touches of Balearic finery for those who like to cruise on the slinkiest of 80s flavoured jams. They're on cracking form for this return to Uber, kicking off with the sultry "Tones Of Ballad", which gets a subtle beefing up from Drifts Projects on the remix. "Pretty Lake" is the cut for those who want to achieve pure transcendental bliss by way of canned slap bass and sustained chords, and then "Snowdrifts" finishes the EP off with a thoughtful piece shaped out by sweet piano and stirring strings.

Review: Emotional Response reach out to another fine selection of sonic voyagers to take Brain Machine's excellent Peaks LP to task, leading in with the warm discoid undulations of Rollmottle who refigures "To The Stars" as a gentle, groovy warm-up joint. Die Wilde Jagd takes on "Mercury Ripples" and fashion a bombastic breaks jam out of it, and Merrick Adams pushes "Alpha Moon" into a curious but ultimately cosmic space somewhere beyond the titular lunar body. Cass takes the prize with the bittersweet synth tones that course through the two-part remix of "Nexus Vox".

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Jan Schulte and Diskoking Burnhart McKoolski's Bufiman project - two years, in fact. After previously plying their wares on Verein Freir Menschen und Musik, the eccentric Balearic/disco duo have been snapped up by Gilb'r's Versatile imprint. "Running (The Chase)" is something of a killer - a driving chunk of clavinet-laden disco fuelled by a seriously heavy post-punk/dub disco bassline. "Kavalier" is deeper and spookier, with new age synth melodies riding a loose, Afro-influenced groove. The slower "Bonobobeat", meanwhile, is a low-slung delight, with snaking synthesizer lines wrapping themselves around dense, head-nodding disco percussion.

Review: Last year, Circuit, Burns & Hawk provided Rush Hour's No Label with the well received From The Legal Pad of... Now two thirds of that crew return to Torn Hawk's Valcrond Video with Becoming Nice. Like we've come to expect from the label, the three tracks across this release are emotional without taking itself too seriously, and the delayed '80s guitars are both playful and a little ironic, but it works. "Becoming Nice" is the highlight and it's a production that combines new age synths with '80s house melancholia and summery pop rock. It's the type of song you'd like to hear soundtrack a nostalgic montage of super 8 film. "Janice Will Dealt With It" stays rocky while maintaining a blurry house dynamic, while a broken beat "Cement Truck With Pretty Eyelashes" sounds like The XX only super-charged minus the breathy vocals.
