Glass (limited gatefold clear vinyl LP + insert + MP3 download code)
Cat: N 0442. Rel: 15 Feb 18
Experimental/Electronic
  1. Track 1 (21:24)
  2. Track 2 (15:18)
Review: Last summer, regular collaborators Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto joined forces for a one-off improvised performance at architect Philip Johnson's Glass House in Connecticut, a stunning building marked out by a lack of traditional walls. Using only a keyboard, mixers, microphones, singing glass bowls, crotales (tiny cymbals played with mallets), the "architecture of the building" and limited rehearsal time, the acclaimed experimentalists created a genuinely unique piece that drew influence from the surroundings. Here, Noton presents the recording of the "100% improvised" piece on CD for the first time. It's an undeniably arresting piece - think droning electronic textures, glass-blown ambience and icily atmospheric soundscapes - and one that requires more than a 30-second clip to take in. We can assure you, though, that it really is a spellbinding and at times jaw-dropping affair.

Review: In 2014, Yellow Magic Orchestra co-founder turned classical composer Ryuichi Sakamoto was diagnosed with throat cancer. His battle with the illness not only gave him a new perspective on life, but also inspired him to return to the studio and write Async, his first solo album since the turn of the decade. It's an absorbing and hugely entertaining set that flits between funereal compositions for piano and organ, sweeping neo-classical movements and, on some of the album's most ear-catching moments, synthesizer-heavy ambience. There are moments of measured cheerfulness scattered throughout, but for the most part the album is melancholic and poignant in tone. Given his personal health battles, that's understandable.

Review: It never fails to impress us just how sharp Ryucihi Sakamoto's experimental instincts remain, despite his advancing years. For proof, check the line-up of artists he asked to provide remixes for this "remodeled" companion piece to last year's sublime Async full-length. Predictably, almost all bring their A-game. Check, for example, the sweeping cinematic brilliance of Oneohtrix Point Never's interpretation of "Andata", the mournful, ultra-atmospheric wonder of Alva Noto's take on "Disintegration", the wall-of-sound sonic textures and neo-classical movements of Fennsez's version of "Solari", and the chopped-and-screwed headiness of "Async (ARCA Remix)". For the most part, all involved have somehow managed to emphasize the depth of feeling in Sakamoto's compositions, most of which were inspired by his well documented battle with cancer.

Review: Japanese musical legend Ryuichi Sakamoto composes the soundtrack to Hollywood blockbuster The Revenant. Directed by Alejandro G. INarritu and starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hardy, the film earned three Golden Globes and five BAFTA awards. Sakamoto collaborates with The National's Bryce Dessner and German multidisciplinary artist Carsten Nicolai aka Alva Noto of Raster-Noton fame. This brooding yet breathtaking musical accompaniment is awe inspiring in all its grandeur, particularly the moments on which Alva Noto appears to provide his trademark synthesized string orchestra passages, complimented by his glitchy and clinical soundscapes ("Carrying Glass"/"Powaqa Rescue") They're so reminiscent of his legendary Xerrox series. Also features the Northwest Sinfonia (Seattle), Berlin orchestra s t a r g a z e and contributions from John Luther Adams and Eliane Radigue.

Review: You can trust Music On Vinyl to put out the very best soundtracks, from the least likely sources. That Blade Runner soundtrack reissue a few years back was an absolute treat for us, to cite an example, but this edition of the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack is even more leftfield. After all, it's no surprise because the film had an insanely on-point score that never made it onto vinyl format; songs from the likes of John Adams, Giorgio Moroder and Franco Battiato are a wonderful thing to own on wax, within the concept of this remarkable movie, alongside other great tunes from coveted producers like Japan's Ryuichi Sakamoto. All in all, a fine catch.
