Review: Bjorn Wagner's all-star tropical disco band, Magic Source, loves a cover version. The outfit's first EP boasted, as a bonus cut, a superb (and colourful) take on Tom Tom Club's 'Genius of Love'. On this belated sequel, they've gone one better by re-inventing A Guy Called Gerald's pioneering UK house classic 'Voodoo Ray' as a driving, all-live tropical disco jam. It's cleverly done, with all the key elements being replicated, sometimes in canny ways (the acid lines now become Clavinet lines, the synth-bass is now bass guitar, and so on). It's a fantastic cover all told and one that is far more than a smile-inducing novelty. Also superb is flip-side 'Interplanetary Bounce', a spacey jazz-funk/disco fusion cut rich in fuzzy horns, vintage synth sounds and shuffling drums.

Review: In the world of house music, it's often the B-sides - more adventurous or deeper alternatives to the peak-time-focused lead cut - that often last the test of time. It's a conclusion that Vick Lavender has come to, at least, because this limited-edition EP marks the first in a 'B-Sides Series' in which all cuts are bonuses, alternate takes or 'tributes' to other artists. He begins by paying tribute to Dexter Wansel on 'A Space of My Own', layering dense hand percussion, spacey electronics and intergalactic synth sounds over a rock-solid kick-drum pattern. He then slams down two versions of the King Sporty sampling 'Mr Sporty': the sax-squelch-and jammed-out keys-heavy brilliance of the 'Time Traveler Re-imagined Mix' and the more leisurely, synth solo sporting deep house warmth of the 'Drums & Life' version.

Opener 'AGAL' is a slow, percolating jam with shimmery synths and squelchy bass then 'Galaxies' brings some dusty broken beats and sugar chords for a nice laidback vibe. 'Feels Good' is another loose-limbed rhythm with wispy pads, DIY percussive sounds and bass that is rich in reverb. Last of all is 'Where Is The Dub' which slows things right to a crawl with plucked guitars and loads more echo to sink into.

Here he serves up a ninth instalment in his excellent 'Multitrack Reworks' series. On side A he does a stellar job in reinventing Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy The Silence' as a squelchy, synths-and-slap-bass sporting mid-tempo disco anthem, complete with spine-tingling vocal breakdowns. He opens side B with a stripped-back, dubbed-out take on Al Green classic 'Let's Stay Together', smartly emphasising the bittersweet beauty of the original version's orchestral accompaniment, before delivering a sweet, head-nodding take on the Emotions' 'Blind Alley'.

Review: Monsieur Van Pratt returns with a second volume of the Illegal Disco series and these sure are some naughty beats that are reimagined classics for contemporary clubs. The flame-hot 'Disco Fever' gets things going with a sleazy big sax line bringing the vibes to a strident disco beat with funky riffs and some great vocal work. 'Fanning The Flame' is another big one with funky drums and big open hi-hats all topped with another impassioned vocal and raw horns. This one comes on translucent re wax and brings together a blend of seasoned and fresh talent including Hotmood, Shalvoy, Diana Swan, Musta, Adam Nova and Uptown Funk. These tracks do a fine job of reflecting the label's dedication to innovation right from the off. Musta's 'Fresco' is a nice jumbled percussive disco funker, Hotmood's 'Ayaaa' rides on some electric synth waves and Shalvo's 'Dancin' is a smooth cruise for the midnight hours. On the flip side are three more vibrant and vivacious disco dancers for good times only.

Review: It's a welcome reissue on 2xCD for this lovingly curated collection of full-length and 12" versions of Disco Classics - Disco Boogie - originally released as part of the Demon Music Group's Disco Discharge series in 2010. Disco was always a broad church. As a genre it brought in elements from Motown and Philly, pop, Latin, African, musicals, classical and even rock. Even so, arguably the longest-lived iteration of disco came from the blues-originated 'boogie' genre. Boogie was a flame that both provided the very basis of the disco groove and outlasted the genre's staggering late-70s mainstream global takeover. With its blend of soul, jazz, funk and r&b, and with its name descending from street slang for - ahem - sweaty lovemaking, boogie lasted well into the 1980s and beyond. It was was disco in the raw: boogie was more fundamental. Gathering together 20 exemplars of the sound, Disco Discharge: Disco Boogie provides a one-stop shop to boogie heaven and it features some of the biggest names of the genre, alongside some heinously forgotten classics.

Review: Newfangled popstar back-cat diggers label Bowie kick off their 7"s arm with an intention to "dig deep into the unreleased sides of pop superstars material from the past", focusing initially on two formerly unreleased funk instrumental tracks recorded by the label's namesake. Who knew an anisocoric kid from Bromley could end up playing funk? So he did, having, at an unnamed point in time, laid down funk versions of 'Fame' and 'Golden Years', two already towering moments in the discography. His trademark jerkiness shines as ever here, but it's the 'Fame' instrumental that really flexes his twanging side, flaunting long releases and dramatic two-tone movements.

Review: After admiring his work from afar for a few years, the Too Slow To Disco crew reached out to Super Spicy Records chief and long-standing Mexican nu-disco don Monsieur Von Pratt. The result is this tidy two-tracker, his first contribution to their popular edits series. On side A, he gets to work on a 'super obscure' (in the label's words) disco-era Mexican cover of Bobby Caldwell's 'What You Won't Do For Love'. Marked out by gorgeous and horn-heavy orchestration, lightly straightened out disco grooves and expressive Spanish language vocals, it's a proper low-tempo disco delight that sounds like an anthem in the making. Review: Whoever is behind the Discotecas series has certainly got access to some seriously good re-edits. As with its predecessors, volume six in the series lands with no info about the identity of the editor (or editors) involved. Whoever it is, they've done a bang-up job - as inspired opener 'Perceptive', a deliciously dubby and spaced-out take on a hybrid electro/proto-house gem from the mid 1980s, proves. The retro-futurist fun continues on 'Kazbah', a fine revision of a brilliantly odd, breakbeat-fuelled Arabic acid record, while flip-side opener 'Bass Instinct' sits somewhere between bleep & breaks and early speed garage. Closing cut 'Ask a Dream' is arguably the best cut of all: a sublime slab of saucer-eyed early deep house of the kind that should probably be listened to as the sun comes up.

Spanning the years 1974 to 1988, this compilation is a treasure trove of forgotten classics and hidden gems, a sonic time capsule that transports listeners back to the neon-lit streets and vibrant nightlife of 1980s Japan. Buzz's 'Garasumado' kicks things off with an infectious groove and funky guitar riffs that could rival any Western funk classic. Mami Ayukawa's 'Sabita Gambler' adds a touch of soulful sophistication, her smooth vocals gliding over lush instrumentation. Review: Nenor is back on the Fossils imprint with another showcase of raw yet soulful take on deep house following some fine moments on the cultured likes of Mahogani, Defected, and Nervous. This time out he offers up four tracks that have been meticulously crafted, starting with 'The Underground', a dark, emotive groove with menacing pads and organs percussive sprinkles. 'No More' offers a deep, dubby sound with a rather haunting gospel sample while 'What's Coming' is a percussive, high-energy offering with twitchy pads, jumbled bass and beats and a characterful vocal. Review: Given that both producers are underground titans, traversing the blurred lines between disco, acid, deep house and wide-eyed dreaminess, you'd expect this two-track collaboration between Eddie C and Keita Sano to be pretty darn good. It is, of course, with the pair carving their own mind-mangling, breathlessly energetic niche on 'Disco Universal' - a certified throb-job in which trippy noises, exotic instrument samples and pulse-racing electronic motifs rise above a thumping beat and Italo-disco style sequenced bassline. It slows down midway through, 'French Kiss' style, before the duo brilliantly bring it back to a peak-time tempo. They explore sub-heavy, garage-influenced deep house and breakbeat pastures on the dreamy, weighty, impactful and acid-fired 'Joy Joy Joy', once more showcasing the diversity of their musical influences.
