Review: Since launching her Phobiza trilogy in 2016, RAMZi (AKA producer Phobe Guillemot) has become one of the most talked-about producers on Canada's distinctly blazed underground scene. Here, she draws the curtain down on the series in predictably impressive fashion with a mini-album that looks further afield for inspiration. While every track offers a distinctive take on her now trademark hazy, colourful and undeniably horizontal sound soup - think chords, sound effects, melodies, field recordings, tape hiss and lots of toasty bass - it's the myriad of percussion sounds and rhythms that catches the ear. As well as the usual stoned downtempo beats and blazed deep house grooves, you'll also find nods towards early drum and bass, IDM and African and South American polyrhythms. In short: a yearning, head-in-the-clouds treat.

Breakin In/Love The Way You Love Me
  1. Javaroo - "Breakin In"
  2. Marti Caine - "Love The Way You Love Me"
Review: Love Circle returns for a second release, digging deep into the misty past of golden era disco and finding rare gold for the reissue market to rejoice at. This time it's the work of Barry Blue and two projects he produced in the early 80s, lovingly re-edited for maximum dancefloor pleasure by Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold (aka gerry Rooney and Joel Martin). First up is surefire party starter "Breakin In" by Javaroo, and on the flip it's low down seduction workout "Love The Way You Love Me" by Marti Cane getting a fresh airing for all vintage-minded dancers and DJs.

Tabala Mouv (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VLM 001. Rel: 09 Jul 18
  1. Tabala Mouv (Aroop Roy rework)
  2. Tabala Mouv (Truccy edit)
  3. Tabala Mouv
Review: Aroop Roy launches the Vive La Musique label with this effervescent blast of sunkissed Zouk music from the mid 80s. Maurice Agad, the writer responsible for "Tabala Mouv," was traced to the Caribbean island of Martinique, and it only helps feed into the exotic atmosphere surrounding the music. In its original form "Tabala Mouv" is a plush, richly produced groover laden with slap bass, strings, keys, horns and a wonderful meandering vocal. Roy beefs the track up with a rework that subtly edges a few modern touches into the mix, while Truccy offers up a simple edit of the track in its purest form.

  6. BouncerC-nt With A Shit Tash (6:32)
Review: Surely the freakiest house party in town, Bahnsteig 23 is the gift that keeps on giving. The relentless release schedule keeps up right here with this unmissable missive from Cherrystones, a learned selector and all round sonic oracle who regularly rubs shoulders with Andy Votel and that ilk of muso's muso. As you'd expect there's a rich spread of vibes on offer here, from the Afro-disco rub down "Simba Dub" to the Eastern psych lilt of "Belly King". "ExOhSkeletons" brings out some gutter punk styles and loops them into a strangely hypnotic form, and "Topical Meat Wave" imparts some pan-seared drama onto a French disco-funk. "KonGkinG" is a shouty new wave funker, and then the record wobbles out on a suitably deep B3 cut for the weirdos, all Oizo-esque synth blurts and sloppy live drum grooves.

Sweet As Rain
Cat: C56 067. Rel: 03 Aug 18
  1. Sweet As Rain (6:34)
  2. Sweet As Rain (album mix) (9:56)
Review: Claremont 56 boss Paul Murphy fell in love with Pan Electric's 2004 cut "Sweet as Rain" after hearing it in Japan a few years ago. Since it has never previously been released on vinyl, he decided to license it from its creator, veteran producer Matt Coldrick. As sublime piece of next-level downtempo bliss rich in Marimba style melodies, calming acoustic guitars and traditional Ethiopian vocals, "Sweet as Rain" is near perfect in every way. Brilliantly, Coldrick has also provided a recently reworked "Album version" which stretches out enticingly for 10 minutes across all of side B. Slower to build and laden with mesmerizing musical elements, it's even better than the magical original mix.

Review: Escape From New York's 1984 cut "Fire In My Heart" has long been considered something of a Balearic classic. Original copies of the Rollerball Records release 12" are hard to come by, though, so this reissue is more than welcome. The original version - all slo-mo electro drums, rubbery dub bass, exotic melodies and intoxicating vocals - is joined by the now infamous Instrumental Dub version, which has been a staple in Balearic DJs' sets for more than 30 years. If that wasn't enough, there's also a chance to savour to woozy, dub-influenced synth-pop of original bonus cut "Won't Be Your Fool".

Review: 17 years old and still sounding refreshing, light, breezy, soulful and smoky; the essence and vibe of Zero 7's debut album can never be repeated, but it can be repressed. Its first reissue since 2015, across two 12"s you can enjoy some of the best downtempo and poppy Balearica made by the duo Binns & Hardaker and a young Sia on vocals. Highlights, as always, include the dreamy lounge lapping jazz of "Red Dust", the fizzy Motown on mushrooms horns of "Give It Away" and the heartmelting yearns of "Distractions". Timeless downtempo gold, if this isn't in your collection now is most definitely the time.

  10. Morning Part 2 (2:16)
Review: The London-based CHURCH imprint is often too underappreciated and too overlooked given how much wonderful music it has put out since its first releases began to appear about 6 years ago and, most importantly, it is often overlooked in terms of diversity. Unlike popular opinion, they do not simply release house or tech for the floor and, if this new LP from debutant Yadava is anything to go by, they have mastered the art of eloquence and experimentation. It Rains Here is a beautiful LP, balancing its moody tones between trip-hop, balearic, and something not quite definable. Whatever the weather, this is a great source of good vibes, both on and off the dancefloor; it's funk music for the next decade, from the heart of London's streets. Check it and cop it! Warmly recommended.

The perfect soundtrack for summer, brim-full of beach-ready tunes that truly reflect Ibiza's chilled musical spirit. Featuring legends and newcomers of the style alike, such as Japan by way of London's Max Essa with the sublime slo-mo beauty of "Gold Hush" (part 2), the legendary On U Sound (Adrian Sherwood) serves up a rework of Los Twangueros' classic "Entre Dos Aguas", Faze Action deliver a superbly neon-lit rendition of Private Agenda's "Dawn" and man of the moment Fabrizio Mammarella (who collaborates with Philip Lauer as Black Spuma) impresses as always - on his life-affirming re-rub of Gallo's "Faron".

Review: In some circles, Arvo's 1984 album Luna is considered something of a lost synth-pop classic. It was unarguably the high point of Arvo's career, with the album's two most lauded tracks - "Bikini" and "So Deep" - remaining popular with dusty-fingered Balearic beards. Here those two tracks are given the reissue treatment by New Zealand imprint Strangelove Music. You'll find the breezy, stylish and largely slo-mo original versions on the A-side, with fresh reworks on the flip. First, French producer Shelter does a brilliant job in extending "Bikini", wisely extending the dreamy first section and making more of the Brazilian-influenced synthesizer motifs, before Aussie Italo-disco digger Hysteric delivers a head-nodding instrumental take on "So Deep" that's worth the entrance price on its own.

Review: For the fourth volume in Mukatsuku's ongoing Jazz Classics series, label boss Nik Weston has decided to reissue two lesser-known gems from the nu-jazz era. On side A you'll find Kirk Degiorgio in As One mode, laying down a sublime chunk of sultry jazz bliss that comes laden with virtuoso horn playing and some superb keys-work from then session player Jamie Odell (AKA Jimpster). It was recorded almost 20 years ago, but sounds timeless. Equally as impressive is Butti 49's "Spiritual Radiations", a bright-and-breezy, soul-flecked chunk of jazz positivity that sounds like Rotary Connection jamming with Kyoto Jazz Massive.Juno copies come with an exclusive hand-numbered obi strip not available at other stores plus branded sleeve & sticker.DJ support so far from Spiritland,Faze Action,Nicola Conte, Kalita Records Chris,Nick Emanative,Simon S,Steven Tang and Kay Suzuki

Review: If you want hugs on the dancefloor deep into the night, Late Night Tough Guy's (formally DJ HMC) "Bless The Rains" is the perfect drug. The Adelaide based luminary rehashes Toto's "Africa" in a heavily pitched down and simple edit fit for any fromage-laced discotheque. Skirting around the throbbing bassline and triangle hits of "My Body On Fire" is a vocal that will have some train-spotters pulling their hair out in frustration, while "Not In Love Anymore" will have both Warren G/Nate Dogg and Michael McDonald fans bumping and grinding to excess.

Review: Phil Mison returns with another blink-and-miss wax special that takes the name from a medicinal leech. Fitting; one session with any of these three versions will drain you of any ill will or negativity. Rising in tempo and energy from the original across the two remixes by Noche Espanola and Pete Herbert, this is pure Balearica with its glistening strums, sunset chords and magically scattered percussion. The seasonal timing of this is no coincidence.

  12. Tommy Awards - "Sessions II - Untitled Track" (Balearic remix) (5:30)
Review: There's no surprise with the vibe on this latest compilation on Balearic: Balearic 3. From the cold-chillin tones of Cantoma's "Abando" that open up side A to the blissed out ambient drift of the "Balearic Mix" of Tommy Awards' "Sessions II - Untitled Track", this is the definitive sound of that least definitive of genres. This collection of tracks cruises by via the idyllic strum of The Madrigal, the yearning, searching "Daydreams" by Fuga Ronto, the jangly funk of Quinn Lamont Luke and the slinky groove of Hubbabubbaklubb, never once letting that balmy Mediterranean mood break form. They just don't get more Balearic than this.

Review: Belfast pair Bicep are smart operators. Having previously doffed a cap to both Italian house and classic New Jersey garage, recent releases have seen them play around with a variety of rhythmic patterns and more advanced musical elements. They're at it again here on their latest outing for Aus. Opener "Just" is pleasingly cheery, with simple but addictive electronic melodies and sweeping chords nestling above a head-nodding, hip-hop influenced groove. "Celeste" is undeniably Balearic, with sun-kissed pianos, dreamy pads and drifting vocal samples stretching out over delay-laden, African-influenced percussion. Finally, they return to their rush-inducing best on "Back 2 U (Tranz Dub)", a loving fusion of vintage progressive house builds, winding melodies and mid '90s beats.

Review: One of the deepest reaching projects from the multifaceted Vibraphone stable resurfaces for an extended trip through ambient sonics that marks possibly the most daring departure on the esteemed Italian label to date. The harmonious tones undulating throughout Sketches From Space are instant soothers, taking the odd cue from techno but defiantly beatless and meditative. It's a surprising addition to the long and winding Vibraphone story, but also feels like one of the strongest steps forward the resurgent label has taken since returning to the fray. Just try sinking into "Lagrangian Point L4" and you'll see exactly what we mean.

Morris is sounding confident and cool on "Cloud Nine," using vintage drum machine patterns and fuzzy synth lines to impart a sweet-natured groove that reaches skywards. Contrasting the blissed out original, Max Essa brings a little more bite to the table with his shimmering electro-disco version, while Coyote preaches his Balearic vision on the B1 remix. Review: Larry Heard and Ron Trent aside, few are capable of producing house music as deep, soulful and lilting as largely unheralded Maltese producer Melchior Sultana. Further proof supporting this bold claim can be found on the producer's latest EP. Opener "Phased" sets the tone, with Sultana smothering a deep and groovy house rhythm with toasty bass, dreamy Rhodes chords and twinkling, delay-laden electronic motifs. He brilliantly slows things down on "Quitness", a jazzy, hip-hop tempo head-nodder rich in fluttering flute lines and eyes-closed electric piano solos, before doffing a cap to classic Italian deep house on the sumptuous "Source" and impeccably melodious "The Haze".

Review: Is It Balearic? welcome the mellow charms of Chris Coco and Camillo Miranda to lay down an unusual paean to a prehistoric love with the truly breezy drifter "Dinosaur Baby." While the tale might be a quirky one, the music is the real deal, all tumbling percussion locked into a slow, head-nodding groove, and this comes through even stronger on the "12" Dub". On the flip, Rune Lindbaek delivers a remix that fleshes the original out with laconic disco flourihes, and then Luke Solomon's version injects a little housey energy into the make up with his usual flair for off-kilter party fuel.

Here the Hamburg-based artist continues his exploration of unusual instruments via a first studio album (his third in total) for Multi-Culti. There's much to admire throughout, from the chiming bells and exotic melodic motifs of opener "Gavotte Mantra", and the intoxicating, slo-mo mysticism of "Six (feat. MD Pallavi)", to the clandestine brilliance of "Manu Roto" and Steve Reich-on-an-acid-trip ambient bliss of closer "Sheepbells". For added dancefloor interest, Otto has also included fine reworks by rising star Nicola Cruz and Gomma alumnus Golden Bug.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Uzuri can always be trusted as an on-point barometer of the strongest currents in contemporary deep house, and here they welcome a new talent into their midst in the form of Panama Keys. "Panamarama" is a gorgeous suite of organic instrumentation, all Spanish guitar licks and pattering bongos, which then get handed over to the mighty Joe Clausell for the soaring, energised "Harvest Remix". "Vyrgin Island" may well be the stand-out track on the record with its infectious flute lines, chiming vibes and sensual, punchy bassline, but don't overlook the blissful ambience of final vignette "Flying Whiles".

Hooked Up, the first Zmatsutsi release since, is similarly inclined. Built around head-nodding drum machine rhythms, undulating arpeggio lines, trippy synthesizer motifs and breathy, poetic spoken word vocals, it's a hugely atmospheric and enjoyable affair. There are occasional forays into more boogie-inspired territory, but even these outings tend towards the throbbing, pulsating and hypnotic. Of course, we expect little less from the inspired Macadam Mambo label, but we were still surprised by the dizzyingly high quality threshold throughout.

Review: Daniel Saxon Judd is plenty prolific as Sorcerer, turning out albums and EPs in abundance on Tirk some ten years ago not to mention more recently landing on Is It Balearic? and Real Balearic, two labels that tell you exactly where his mood is pitched. This five-track EP for Dreamtime keeps the island mindset at the forefront, from the slow and easy "Baked Wave" to the more limber strum-funk of "Drop Shadow". There's some wobbly boogie to enjoy on "Mango Messenger" and MOR grooves of the highest order on "Zoned For Fun" - it's a record swimming in smooth.

Review: Japan's Mule Musiq returns with the second edition of the excellent Midnight In Tokyo series, showcasing their country's capital and its propensity for audio-visual dystopia. Most importantly, the compilation is made up of strictly Japanese talent, and centred on the wider 'house' sound. For instance, the opening "Hikobae", from Genji Sawai, is a majestic bit of Balearic that emanates the word 'downtempo' like nothing else we've seen. But, there is so much to explora and dig into here; our favourites from the packs are Air Suspension Club Band's boogie-leaning "In The Hot City", Jugando's future-jazz bit "Twisty", the effortlessly cool waves of "Samarkand" by Kingkon Paradise, and Om's "Windmill" - probably the best instrumental slice of neo-percussionism that we've heard from the imprint. Recommended.

Review: It took Regularfantasy (real name Olivia Carman) almost three years to make a follow-up to her superb 2015 debut, Born On The Weekend, yet this sequel to her comeback 12", Tales From a Plush Palace, has appeared within three months of its predecessor. Sunsets and Sublets is a typically colourful and herb-powered affair, with Carman and collaborators (old pal Sophie Sweetland and Hashman DJ being the highest profile) laying down cuts that variously mix and match elements of bumpin' U.S garage, blazed Vancouver deep house, loved-up synth-pop, sunset-ready slo-jams, horizontal ambient mood-scapes and lo-fi R&B.

  4. Into The Fun (4:43)
Review: It was probably only a matter of time before Love International chiefs Dave Harvey (also boss of Futureboogie Recordings) and Tom Paine launched a label. Fittingly, the imprint's first release, from James Holroyd's Balearic-minded Begin project, is as magical, sun-kissed and life affirming as their Croatia-based festival. Like Holroyd's previous Begin releases, the four tracks showcased here are wonderfully warm, glassy-eyed and loved-up. We're particularly enjoying the languid alien synths, jazzy guitars and rubbery bass of "Wood Trees" and the gentle, Bossa-infused shuffle of "Day Pulse", though the dub-wise Balearic house bliss of "Garden (Interlude)" and lounge style jauntiness of "Into The Fun" are also both superb. Basically, it's fantastic from start to finish.

Review: There are plenty out there - the team behind Dark Entries Records included - who will happily tell you that that Time Actor is one of the finest and most overlooked albums of the 1970s. It was the debut full-length of Richard Wahnfried, an alter ego of pioneering German ambient don and electronic experimentalist Klaus Schulze preserved for collaborative projects. In the case of Time Actor, that collaborator was Arthur Brown (he of "The Crazy World Of..." fame), whose half spoken, half-sung vocals provide a focal point throughout. Musically, the album is deliciously trippy and other-worldly, with Schulze delivering a swathe of fine electronic grooves and bubbly Berlin School soundscapes. This edition also boasts a brilliant bonus track: a 12-minute, 1983 "Afro-cosmic" revision of the title track by Italian Maurizio Delvecchio.

Review: The late Jorge Reyes was a leading figure in Mexican experimental music, and this album recorded with Antonio Zepeda is one of his earliest and most striking works. Originally released in 1986, A La Izquierda Del Colibri is a worldly product of the era in the same way as the work of Jah Wobble and Brian Eno, rich in new wave funk but reaching to a higher plane thanks to all manner of sonic devices. From treated jungle sounds to swooping pads, the whole album feels like an exotic trek through the heat and mystery of Central America, at times leaving the Western world far behind and at other times embracing it. A captivating listen.

Review: There's a reason that Massive Attack's Blue Lines frequently appears in "greatest albums" lists. To put it simply, it's brilliant, and arguably remains the Bristol-based outfit's finest work to date (though some would argue that the dark and paranoid Mezzanine is possibly better). As this weighty vinyl reissue proves, it's lost none of its hazy, dub-propelled trip-hop charm. All-time classics such as "Unfinished Sympathy", "Safe From Harm" and "Hymn of the Big Wheel" have lost none of their soulful, mood-enhancing brilliance, while lesser celebrated cuts such as "Five Man Army" and "Lately" still sound great despite their vintage.

Review: The influential Norwegian house pioneer Bjorn Torske returns with his first solo studio album in eight years and it's a remarkable return to form. Returning back to the spacier, cosmic stew he put onto to boil 20 years ago, the flavour is just as strong and the grooves are just as succulent as they where when he first started. While retaining his leftfield edge, his eyes are refixed on the dancefloor with some of his most driven tracks in years; the strident piano strikes on "Clean Air", the Kraftwerkian syncopation and drama of "Dalen" and the theatrical lightning of "Natta" are just some of the many highlights.

Review: Ned Doheny's particular strain of blue-eyed soul seems perfectly suited to the idea of the remix. So much so that Be With Records has teamed him up with producer Mudd for what feels like a match made in heaven. The latter has taken Doheny's classic "Think Like A Lover" and translated it into Balearic format - a gentle, cautious strain of disco that does nothing in the way of outshining the original. In fact, we believe it to be the perfect companion and a sort of collaborative revisioning. Both the vocal remix, and the more explorative instrumental cut. Lovely stuff!

Review: Robin Lee takes a break from his day job as Faze Action to slip into the occasional Rudy's Midnight Machine alias for this outing on his own label. It's a mellow, atmospheric ride into pastures you wouldn't normally associate with Faze Action, although "Midnight Safari" is smooth and luxurious enough to feel right in any context. "In The Air" has a mysterious air to it, helped in no small part by the evocative Eastern lilt of the strings running through the centre of the track. There's a sassy boogie step powering "Reach Backless," while "Windchimes" flips the script with a semi-ambient live bass reverie. It's back to the party one last time with "Solar Plex" though - this record is about synthy funk first and foremost.

Review: Crown Ruler Records co-founder Jeremy Spellacey is highly regarded within the crate-digging community, primarily for his ability to sniff out copies of obscure - but, naturally, high quality - boogie-era disco records from Africa and the Caribbean. On this fine compilation, Spacetalk has offered the New Zealander the opportunity to showcase some of those finds, alongside a smattering of better-known favourites and more recent cuts (see Mike Fabulous's overlooked modern boogie gem "Wang East"). Predictably, Spellacey has delivered the goods, serving up humid, exotic and loved-up gems galore, including the fluttering brilliance of Stimela's "I Love You", the marimba-laden Balearic boogie of Feladey's "Forest Music" and Devon Russell's impeccable reggae-soul cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Move on Up".

Review: Archeo Recordings chart a course for the Balearics with this laid back delight of overlooked Italian island grooves. Tony Esposito is a long-serving singer-songwriter, and two tracks from his 2004 CD Viaggio Tribale get a vinyl cut here. "Dove C'e Luce" gets a special, 90s tinged remix from LucaEffeSunset. Antonio Nicola Bruno's "Storia Della Terra Mia" is the first of three unreleased tracks from this little known Lucan artist, striking a curious note with folk undertones and a sunny disposition. There's a more dramatic tone to "Danza E Ridanza," which takes on an almost Talking Heads-esque quality for the "B Version" that closes this high quality 12" from the ever reliable Archeo camp.

Review: If you were judging Kieran Hebden's 11th Four Tet studio album merely on the way it's presented, you'd immediately think he'd spent the last two years immersed in early '90s ambient house albums. While it's unlikely he's done that, it's fair to say that New Energy does owe a debt to classic electronica sets from that period. For all the exotic instrumentation and subtle nods to post-dubstep "aquacrunk" experimentalism and chiming, head-in-the-clouds sunrise house, the album feels like a relic of a lost era. That's not meant as a criticism - New Energy is superb - but it is true that his choice of neo-classical strings, gentle new age melodies, sweeping synthesizer chords and disconnected vocal samples would not sound out of place on a Global Communication album.

Review: Animals On Psychedelics snaps up a debut appearance from Miro Sundaymusiq for its second release, delving further into the label's mission statement of "the more tripped out, spacey side of electronic music." Miro opens up proceedings with "This Is Not Butter Carolin", a twinkling roller with subtle disco undertones and a cheeky nod to electro rubbed into the rhythm. So far, so psychedelic. "Creamy Dreams" is no slouch in the cosmic department either, loaded with bubbling arpeggios aimed skywards and using a sprightly set of drums to help the mellifluous tones along.
