Review: Studio album number ten finds Britain's foremost purveyors of 21st century stadium rock combining lyrical fragility - the result of a conscious effort by front man Chris Martin to be more emotionally open - with typically lavishly executed (and at times orchestrated) music that doffs a cap to many of their now familiar themes. So while grandiose opener and title track 'Moon Music' (created in collaboration with Jon Hopkins) and the sing-a-long, late 80s indie-influenced stadium synth pop of 'Feelslikeimfallinginlove' reflect the sound and approach that powered them to superstardom, 'We Pray' sees them take a gentle turn towards bass-heavy, grime-leaning dancefloors in the company of Little Simz, Burna Boy, Elyanna and TMI, 'Rainbow' is a gospel-influenced slab of spirituality, Anya Starr collaboration 'Good Feelings' is a disco-pop delight and 'Aeterna' doffs a cap to more rave-inclined dancefloors.

Review: Celebrate the 25th anniversary of AFI's All Hallow's E.P. with this limited-edition release on "Spectral Pink" vinyl. This cult-classic EP, originally released in 1999, is reimagined with alternative fluorescent cover art and includes a 10" x 20" black light die-cut coffin poster, evoking the eerie charm of the original Nitro Records promo. The EP, clocking in at a fitting 13 minutes, features AFI's standout tracks: a formidable cover of The Misfits' 'Halloween', the iconic 'The Boy Who Destroyed the World', the infectious 'Totalimmortal', and the fan favorite 'Fall Children'. This limited 10-inch pressing offers a nostalgic nod to the band's punk roots while showing their early foray into melodic and atmospheric sounds. AFI, formed in 1991, evolved from a hardcore act into melodic pioneers with their 1999 album Black Sails in the Sunset and subsequent releases. The All Hallow's E.P. remains a sought-after gem in their discography. With this reissue, fans can relive the magic of AFI's early days, now with a hauntingly collectible twist.
Review: Cindy is set to unveil their new six-track EP Swan Lake through Tough Love. While the title doesn't directly reference the famous ballet or folktale, it evokes an image that is familiar yet open to interpretation. Songwriter Karina Gill intentionally employs this concept to bridge sound and personal experience. Continuing the minimalist approach of previous releases, Swan Lake introduces some fresh elements. The instrumentation is expertly curated, with guitarist Oli Lipton and bassist Will Smith providing counterpoint melodies that complement Gill's structures. Vocal harmonies from Staizsh Rodrigues enhance Gill's delivery, while Mike Ramos's playful drumming and Stanley Martinez's intricate guitar work add further depth. Gill's songwriting encapsulates a blend of casual storytelling with unexpected twists. Themes explore everyday momentsia ride in an elevator sparks reflections on peace; the title track delves into the nature of associative thinking; and 'The Bell' captures fleeting clarity in a chaotic world. Gill acknowledges her influences as a mosaic of past sounds and current connections, creating a rich blend that is uniquely her own.
William Alfred Sergeant - "Toy Piano Mantra" (3:57)
Paul Simpson - "Ghosts Of The Karelia Forest" (3:09)
Review: Feral Child reissues an earlier 45 that allegedly “came and went in a day” on first release: a coruscating pair of instrumental folk gems from Will Sergeant and Paul Simpson. Each artist sharing one side respectively, ‘Toy Piano Mantra / Ghosts Of The Karelia Forest’ was only released last year in 2023, and indeed became little less than an insta-cop; original pressings still go for hundreds. Sergeant’s ‘Toy Piano Mantra’ is culled from the English’s guitarist and Echo & The Bunnymen songwriter’s 2020 album Things Inside, and is a wilful exercise in acoustic guitar and harmonium composition, where the artist avows his own aversion to acoustic instruments in usual favour of the electric guitar. Paul’s side features the formerly unreleased ‘Ghosts Of The Karelia Forest’, a complementarily slow-building and haunting solo piano piece from the Wild Swans and Teardrop Explodes keyboardist. Now reissued on transparent vinyl 7”, you can be certain this one will fly like the first editions.
Review: Clinic Stars' debut album Only Hinting is a melancholic swirl of downer-pop and shoegaze, crafted by Detroit duo Giovanna Lenski and Christian Molik. Having spent 2022 and 2023 recording at their home studio, they layered each track with dense FX and deep reverbs, creating an emotional undertow that envelops every song. Tracks like 'I Am The Dancer' spiral with strummed guitar swells, while 'Remain' pulses with gated reverb, and the greyscale melancholy of 'Isn't It' drips with dreamy, aching nostalgia. The album is as much about escape as it is about longing. Though the duo cite their industrial surroundings as a key influence, the songs themselves feel as if they're trying to transcend these confines, soaking in the romance of distance and detachment. Previous EPs 10,000 Dreams and April's Past offered a similar slowcore haze, but Only Hinting takes this aesthetic further, blending melody and ambience until they become indistinguishable. There's a delicate balance between lightness and weight, a constant tug-of-war between floating and sinking. The guitars drift, vocals melt into the background, and the production feels both expansive and intimate, stretching across shadowy cityscapes. With this debut, Clinic Stars have created a deeply immersive sonic landscape that lingers long after it fades out. Available to pre-order now, Only Hinting will be released on LP format later this year.
Review: After three groundbreaking albums with black midi, including 2023’s Hellfire, Geordie Greep has carved out time to release his debut solo project, The New Sound. This album showcases an eclectic and vibrant approach to alternative pop, granting Greep the freedom to pursue creative impulses without restraint. He reflects on this liberation, stating that without a band to answer to, he could fully explore his artistic vision. The recording process involved over thirty session musicians across São Paulo and London, blending diverse influences. Greep notes the spontaneity of working with local talent in Brazil, where tracks were recorded in a matter of days. Musically, The New Sound delves into themes of urban life and human experiences, juxtaposing light-hearted melodies with darker narratives. Songs like 'Holy Holy' merge indie pop with lush Latin arrangements, while 'Motorbike' features bassist Seth ‘Shank’ Evans in a poignant lament. Greep's ambition is evident throughout the eleven tracks, aiming to engage listeners with intricate lyrics and unexpected turns. He hints at future live performances, aiming to capture the album's dynamic spirit in various settings.
Review: The sixth studio album from Half Waif aka. Nandi Rose, See You At The Maypole, hears the musician process loss, motherhood and miscarriage through 17 lissome songs of graceful, chin-up synthetics and indie spoken word. These tracks were originally intended as a departure from her earlier, darker works; the mood is timely autumnal, literally and figuratively turning new yet browned leaves; despite the electronically inflected and modern buzzing feel of 'Heartwood' and 'Ephemeral Being', all tracks were composed in a small cabin overlooking a luscious and rain-rippled pond, as part of a solo retreat in the Catskill Mountains in New York. And yet despite its singular locality, Half Waif commands a stylistic range that is unsettled as it is expansive, weaving between unseelie autotune, bracken textures and rustling melancholia.
Review: The Hard Quartet's self titled debut album, marks the arrival of a band that is anything but ordinary. Comprised of four music giantsiEmmett Kelly, Stephen Malkmus, Matt Sweeney, and Jim Whiteithis ensemble is a meeting of minds that have already left significant marks on the music world. Their collaboration, now crystallized under the name The Hard Quartet, promises a fresh take on rock 'n' roll, melding the familiar with the new and the melodic with the enigmatic. Each member brings a wealth of experience from their storied careers. Emmett Kelly is known for his work with The Cairo Gang and collaborations with Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Ty Segall. Stephen Malkmus, a cornerstone of Pavement and the Jicks, needs no introduction to indie rock fans. Matt Sweeney, whose work spans Chavez to Superwolves, and collaborations with Johnny Cash and Cat Power, adds further depth. Finally, Jim White, the drumming force behind Dirty Three and Xylouris White, rounds out this formidable lineup. Their self-titled debut, available in limited edition Coke Bottle Clear Vinyl, collects the combined genius of these four musicians, offering a sound that is both groundbreaking and timeless.
Review: Memorial Waterslides marks the debut of Memorials, a collaboration between Verity Susman and Matthew Simms, formerly of Electrelane and Wire. This album is a surreal exploration of pop music, blending timeless songwriting with avant-garde sensibilities. Drawing from a wide range of influences from Broadcast and Portishead to Yo La Tengo, Memorials crafts a panoramic soundscape that feels both familiar and refreshingly new. The album's tracks are rich with imagery, evoking visions of a lost future and dreamlike past, each contributing to a swirling, cinematic atmosphere. Produced entirely by Susman and Simms, the record's sound was shaped by their reel-to-reel tape experiments, initially developed for their live performances. This playful and experimental approach results in a engaging mix of psychedelic rock, folk, and analog electronics. Following their successful 2023 soundtracks and a European tour with Stereolab, this a bold and imaginative journey into the unexpected, balancing the esoteric with the melodic.
