Review: Laurie Anderson's latest album, Amelia, marks her first release since the well-received Landfall (2018) and is inspired by the tragic final flight of aviator Amelia Earhart, featuring 22 tracks that delve into her much storied legacy. Collaborating with the Czech orchestra Filharmonie Brno, under Dennis Russell Davies, and a roster of notable musicians including Anohni and Marc Ribot, Anderson crafts a deeply evocative narrative, while the album reflects Anderson's distinct style, blending lyrical introspection with innovative soundscapes. Drawing from Earhart's personal diaries and communications, Amelia explores themes of adventure and disappearance, providing a poignant auditory journey. A renowned avant-garde artist, Anderson's career spans music, visual art, and performance, recognised for her boundary-pushing work and poetic storytelling, and this album continues her tradition of merging the beautiful with the bizarre, as well as offering a fresh perspective on an historic figure.

Review: James Clements (ASC) has been one of the most highly regarded artists in ambient, ambient techno and IDM scene since his evolution into the sound about 15 years ago. His ability to create deep soundscapes over lush beats and atmospheres come from his liquid drum n bass background prior to working with more cinematic tracks. ASC is back with a new release and it finds a home at the Past Inside the Present stable where he had put out a few EPs on the last couple years. This haunting and beautiful release Loss, explores various moods and atmospheres to great success. Tracks like the amazing and spacious 'Sensory Disintegration' to the poignant 'What More Can Be Said' which adds a lush airspace to a stunning piano piece. Some soundscapes are majestic and triumphant while others are minimal and then foreboding. New age and ambient fans will rejoice after hearing this magical album. Available in limited quantities so act quickly! Comes with download code inside.

Review: Widely acclaimed mezzo-soprano and two-time Grammy winner Sasha Cooke's debut album Poeme de la L'Amour et de la Mer 4 is a perfect example of what makes her so popular. Fabulous stage presence, fine vocal range and an emotional allure that really draws you in. The record is fabulously epic and over the top which Cooke deals with well. Her voice rides over Chausson's churning Symbolist score in a bewitching fashion. This special 180 gram heavyweight vinyl version is the best way to experience the record, which comes in just three separate pieces, each of which makes for a unique listen.

Review: Barry DeVorzon's haunting score for THE EXORCIST III is a fantastic sonic world of supernatural horror. Directed by William Peter Blatty, the 1990 film is a sequel to The Exorcist, following Lieutenant William F. Kinderman as he investigates demonic murders in Georgetown. Waxwork Records now presents DeVorzon's Original Motion Picture Score for the first time, sourced from original masters and crafted into a compelling double LP. The release features 150-gram purple smoke vinyl, exclusive liner notes by DeVorzon, deluxe gatefold packaging with matte satin coating, a 12"x12" four-page booklet, and new artwork by Suspiria Vilchez, so offers a definitive collectible of chilling atmosphere and musical mastery.

Review: Waxwork Records presents the iconic Body Double Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Pino Donaggio. Directed by Brian De Palma, this 1984 neo-noir erotic thriller pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock's classics, exploring themes of voyeurism and obsession. Starring Craig Wasson and Melanie Griffith, the film follows struggling actor Jake Scully, who, after witnessing a murder, delves into the seedy underworld of Hollywood's adult entertainment industry. De Palma, aiming to defy censorship, crafted an erotic and thrilling narrative. Donaggio's legendary score, including the standout track 'Telescope', masterfully blends orchestral grandeur with 80s electronic beats, perfectly capturing the film's neon-drenched ambiance and suspenseful atmosphere.

Review: Morton Feldman's Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello from 2023 finally drops on vinyl double album and offers a deep dive into the avant-garde world of contemporary classical music. Feldman's minimalist compositions unfold gradually, inviting you into a grand realm of spaciousness and tranquility. The interplay between piano, violin, viola, and cello is masterfully executed and creates ethereal textures and delicate harmonies. Each piece unfolds with a sense of patience and introspection, captivating as it goes, and always with a sense of understated beauty. This album is a testament to Feldman's genius as a composer and is a must-have for enthusiasts of experimental music and modern classical composition.

Review: Jerskin Fendrix, a South London 'Windmill' scenester who has colaborated with Black Midi and is associated with the likes of Black Country New Road among others, is one of the last names you'd expect to see soundtracking a big movie, but then Poor Things' director Yorgos Lanthimos is a character who rarely plays by the rules. This is the first film of his to include an original soundtrack, and also Fendrix's first soundtrack, the latter describing their relationship as being that of young lovers encountering the experience for the first time. The results are coy and innocent sounding, probably as a result, as well stirring and melancholic, with an emphasis on the breathier sounds in the canon and unusual instruments such as harp, bagpipes and hamonium alongside the more traditional strings and other orchestral trimmings. A remarkable soundtrack for a remarkable film.

Review: Produced at EMS Stockholm on Buchla 200 synthesisers before being mastered down the road in Malmo, Quasai is Francesco Fonassi's first LP based around the Quasi project, and goes well beyond what you might call Traditional Album Territory. Hence the live show this is based around being far more than a gig, inviting audiences into increasingly entangled arrangements that seem to grow and develop, set down roots and respawn like some evolutionary modular array. On record, the complexity of what's here isn't really lost, albeit we'd have a hard job arguing that home listening compares to in person performance. Nevertheless, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in this strange, cerebral place where the music itself seems to take inspiration from blinking control panels, glittering data, plucked strings, and drip-drop percussion.

Review: Robin Guthrie's Atlas is a four-track EP showcasing new instrumentals that gently reintroduce listeners to his distinctive world. Known for shaping genres with his production and signature guitar sounds, Guthrie famously co-founded and produced for Cocteau Twins. With over four decades of musical influence, he's produced, remixed, and collaborated across various projects, from instrumental albums to movie soundtracks and Atlas serves as a tantalising preview of what's to follow later this year, namely more of Guthrie's evocative sounds that will no doubt continue his legacy of pushing boundaries.

Review: Violinist Augustin Hadelich's American Road Trip is an attempt to explore the musical landscape of his adoptive homeland with pianist Orion Weiss. The duo performs works by American composers spanning the 19th to 21st centuries and in doing so blends diverse influences such as European Romanticism, revivalist hymns, blues, jazz, and bluegrass. The album features pieces by Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Charles Ives, John Adams, Amy Beach, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson and others, all of whom highlight the rich tapestry of American music. Hadelich, who moved to the U.S. at 19 and became a citizen in 2014, combines American passion with European nuance in his acclaimed performances.

Review: As of now, Kiasmos - the duo of Olafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen - are superstars on the international progressive electronica circuit. It crept up on us that they've only released one other album to date, with the bulk of their output having been limited so far to EPs and singles. II is the follow-up to its apt nominal counterpart, Kiasmos (I), and yet this time hears the pair strike out against the stark piano and electropop influences for which they were initially celebrated. Another key difference is that while the first Kiasmos record was made in the space of two weeks - getting at the sense of effortlessness that might accompany the initial burst of inspiration felt by artists when they start a new alias - II was made over the course of ten years and charts a remarkably different approach to music production.

Review: Kiasmos, the dynamic duo of olafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen, returns with their long-awaited second album, II. This vinyl is a celebration of their evolution over a decade since their self-titled debut in 2014. Known for blending minimal techno with orchestral flourishes, Kiasmos has refined their sound, adding richer textures and a sense of place and space. II opens with Grown, setting a delicate atmospheric tone that showcases their matured sound design. Tracks like 'Dazed' highlight their innovative use of traditional Balinese percussion and field recordings, creating immersive auditory landscapes. The album seamlessly transitions from electronic to classical and rave, maintaining their signature style of whisper-quiet ambience evolving into explosive dance beats. Songs like 'Sailed' and 'Laced' exemplify their knack for blending intricate percussion with organic synths, resulting in tracks that are both effervescent and serene. olafur's cinematic influence and Janus's DJ experience shine through, pushing the boundaries of genre with frenetic broken beats and catchier melodies. The grand strings recorded with SinfoniaNord add a majestic layer to the complexities, making II a truly expansive work.

Review: Few conductors have been as closely associated with the works of Gustav Mahler as Sir Simon Rattle, Here, the British maestro leads the world famous Berliner Philharmoniker in a rendition of Symphony 5, which itself is one of the most renowned pieces in Mahler's oeuvre. The first instrumental he composed since his Symphony No. 1, it's a powerful audio odyssey here performed flawlessly for Rattle's first ever concert as principal conductor of Berlin's prestigious orchestra. Comprising five movements, each packs its own unique personality. At times lighter than air, in other moments packing a subdued depth, pomp and pageantry, and epic drama ('Trauermarsch. In Gemessenen Schritt. Streng. Wie Ein Kondukt'), you could argue this showcases the breadth of classical in one stunning experience, but that might be stating the obvious.

Per Un Pugno Di Dollari (Finale - mono)
Review: To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the film and its soundtrack, Beat Records proudly presents a deluxe CD reissue of Ennio Morricone's legendary score for the 1964 Western A Fistful of Dollars, directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood, Marianne Koch, Gian Maria Volonte, and others. This co-production between Italy, Spain, and Germany features music that has achieved global acclaim and needs no introduction. For this reissue, stereo tracks selected by Morricone in 1965, combined with other stereo pieces from For a Few Dollars More originally released on RCA vinyl, are included alongside bonus tracks sourced from the mono master tapes of the original sessions have been approved by Maestro Morricone for the first expanded reissue on CD in 2006. The packaging includes a cardboard tunnel with artwork by Renato Casaro, four collector's postcards, and a 24-page color booklet. Mastering was handled by Claudio Fuiano, with graphic design and liner notes by Daniele De Gemini. This version is the most complete version of this legendary soundtrack.

Review: Fourth volume of Library Music miniatures by Daniel O'Sullivan (Ulver, aethenor, This is Not This Heat, etc.) for VHF, this time commissioned by the legendary German Music Library, Sonoton. Another sampling of O'Sullivan's versatility and brilliance as a composer, performer and sound designer, the focus on The Pastoral Machine is more "electronic" compared to the three previous albums O'Sullivan recorded for KPM (also issued on LP by VHF), with simpler arrangements and a focus on gentle and emotive synthesised soundworlds. Even without as many full ensemble arrangements, there's still a wealth of diversity - 'Empathogen' opens the record with latticed arpeggiating sequences recalling Japanese "environmental music" or Persian Surgery-era Terry Riley, 'Fruit Of Stream Entry' burbles with gentle ripples evoking the album's title, while 'The Silversmith Of Space' mines a simple chord sequence evoking Eno's 70s classic short instrumentals. Recalling futurist new-age pop in the vein of Enya or Virginia Astley, the record comes housed in a jacket and heavy euro-style inner featuring collages by O'Sullivan, soon to be the subject of an art book published by Timeless Editions in mid-2024.

Review: Sometimes, the only backstory needed is that of a spontaneous friendship. Salenta and Topu met serendipitously in the summer of 2019 at a mutual friend's apartment in Bedstuy. Winding up months later in a miraculously "perfectly treated" recording studio in Bushwick, the pair encountered an ironic hurdle in that they couldn't get any of the awesome gear in the studio to work, so ended up recording everything acoustically on an old recorder. The result is the drained, ghostly and warbled sound of what could have been; a witchy instrumental folk cello and piano album, sounding to have been caught in imrpovised time; the temporality of friendship.

Review: Inspired by her journey into motherhood, Norwegian violinist Mari Samuelsen's album LIFE is rich in contemporary colour and emotional depth. Known for her vibrant programming and passionate playing, Samuelsen offers a musical reflection on the profound experiences of parenthood. The album features works by composers such as Olivia Belli, Bryce Dessner, Ludovico Einaudi, Nils Frahm, Johann Johannsson, and Max Richter with a touch of Schubert. Recorded while she was pregnant with her second child, LIFE showcases Samuelsen's exquisite playing alongside a small ensemble including Scoring Berlin's string players who are all conducted by Jonathan Stockhammer.

Review: Saxophonist and all-round compositional talent Colin Stetson was tasked earlier in the 20s to soundtrack the recently-released film The Menu, a contemporary whodunnit-style gastronomic thriller in which Ralph Fiennes plays a murderous hell's kitchen chef, bent on finding creative ways to pick off his rich clientele one by one. The soundtrack is suitably chilling; with notes of expressionism and classical music all wrapped up in a cloud of suspense, Stetson ensures we hear a fantasy world turned upside down.

Review: For many young film lovers today, Call Me By Your Name might have just been their first ever experience of homosexuality represented on film. It also put heartthrob Timothee Chalamet on the map, so it's not a film without its dues owed to it. Few still know of the star-studded cast of soundtrack pieces cobbled together for the film, in some cases commissioned, in others licensed from prior recordings. Notably, original compositions from the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Ryuichi Sakamoto make up the atmospheric bulk of it, largely centring on hauntingly beautiful piano pieces tempered by transitional voices and well-controlled rooms. Elsewhere come a smattering of romantic, synthy, Euro classics from FR David's 'Words' Franco Battatio's 'Radio Varsavia'.

Review: The finale of the original trilogy had it all, sewers, blimps, mysterious invisible CGI bridges, you name it! What it also had was an incredible soundtrack, now reissued here to commemorate its 35th anniversary. Although Temple of Doom was another box office hit, critical reactions were heavily mixed and it obviously affected director Steven Spielberg enough that he spent a couple extra years on completing the Indiana Jones trilogy. John Williams of course returns with a lot of new themes - there are a couple of artifact themes this time around, both evoking a strong religious feeling, without any of the ominous feeling that some of the other movies' soundtrack have. The first is the primary Grail theme, which appears in the travel cue portion of 'X Marks the Spot.' Most of its appearances were absent on the original album, but restored here. In the case of Indiana Jones, the music is almost as important as the movies - and the Last Crusade was one of the emost original and in depth soundtracks in the series.

Review: Dune: Part Two has been met by rave reviews form both critics and cinema goers and there is no doubt that yet another epic soundtrack from Hans Zimmer has helped contribute to that acclaim. His work is another masterpiece that perfectly complements the epic saga's grandeur. Building upon the thematic motifs established in the first installment, Zimmer's score transports listeners to the vast, mystical world of Arrakis. With its sweeping orchestral arrangements and haunting electronic textures, the music evokes a sense of awe and intrigue and Zimmer's mastery of cinematic storytelling shines through every note as he captures the emotional depth and complexity of Frank Herbert's universe. From the thunderous percussion of battle sequences to the haunting melodies of desert landscapes, this is a sci-fi soundtrack essential.
