Shahyar GhanbarI - "Forbidden" (6:26)
Shahram Shabparesh - "To Mitooni" (6:45)
Hassan Shamaeizadeh - "Telesm" (6:31)
Review: Passed Out On A Persian Rug might be the best names a label we have heard in a while, as well as being the perfect way to any big weekend. Once this one is lined up on the decks though the party will be far from over - Hayedeh's 'Gol Vajeh' brings exotic vocalisations over deep house beats that get you in the zone. Shahyar GhanbarI's 'Forbidden' is another steamy and enthralling house cut with depth and soulful synth craft. There is playfulness in the chords and funky bass of Shahram Shabparesh's 'To Mitooni' and Hassan Shamaeizadeh's 'Telesm' closes with crisp, breezy tech.

Different Kind Of Life (Massimiliano Pagliara remix) (8:09)
Different Kind Of Life (Massimiliano Pagliara dub) (6:23)
Different Kind Of Life (ASHRR Soundsystem version) (6:34)
Review: The LA-based ASHRR outfit is back with more of their superbly warm and soul-infused sounds here with 'Different Kind of Life'. Their own ASHRR Soundsystem version of the original is a gloriously upbeat and funky bit of space disco with lavish synth lines and chugging drums that lock you in. Berlin electronic mainstay Massimiliano Pagliara, who has landed on the likes of Ostgut Ton, Cocktail d'Amore and more, then brings his own two remixes. The first has some nice indie vocals and dazzling chord work, while the second is a deep dub that pairs things back. All three of these are swaggering and uplifting disco cuts with a difference.

Forager (7:18)
Forager (Glenn Davis remix) (7:00)
Review: Irish producer Balmr lands on Selections after nice outings on the likes of Sofa Movement Records, Kolour Detroit and Expanded Records which have all established him as a fresh deep house artist. His love for the Motor City shines through again here with the warm, dubby drums and swirling pads of 'In Search Of' bring to mind the Midwest's best. Jon Dixon remixes with a little extra bite in the percussion and 'Forager' then layers up more dusty drums and wooden hits with diffuse synth curlicues. It's a sound that works on both head and heel and lastly, Glenn Davis remixes with a touch of jazzy cosmic class to his synth work.

My Love Is Magic: Edits

My Love Is Magic (Bushwacka! edit) (6:18)
My Love Is Magic (club mix) (7:16)
My Love Is Magic (Mark Broom dub Retouch) (6:57)
My Love Is Magic (Mark Broom A12 mix) (5:18)
Review: Nu Groove's ongoing edits series turns its attention to one of the legendary NYC's most iconic early release, Bas Noir's 1988 garage-house classic 'My Love Is Magic' - a piano-powered vocal number fronted by two female singers from New Jersey and produced by the Burrell Brothers. Their original club mix is featured (A2), alongside a trio of fresh re-edits. Bushwacka kicks things off with a deeper, more sonically detailed and marginally punchier rework that makes much of the Burrell brothers' percussion and piano stabs, before Mark Broom takes over on side two. His 'dub retouch' fittingly sounds like a piano solo-sporting NYC house dub of the late 1980s - no bad thing in our book - while his more revolutionary 'A12 mix' re-casts the track as a harder, heavier peak-time loop jam.

Review: Woody Bianchi, renowned funk digger and DJ, embarks on yet another archaeological record collection excavation, unearthing yet another volume of badass funk from the adjacent era of disco that emerged in the 70s and 80s. This is an in depth compilation series to say the least: the tracks are all examples of funk greats which reflected certain motifs from the disco explosion that came after it - even "James Brown had to take notice of the Saturday Night Fever". Several hard-to-find gems appear among ubiquitous classics, among extensive liner notes by Woody himself.

Review: Inner Life's 'I'm Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)' released in 1979 is a quintessential disco anthem that captures the exuberance and allure of the era. Jocelyn Brown's powerful vocals deliver a story of fleeting romance, seamlessly intertwining with lush orchestrations and a driving rhythm section that still get people up and dancing all these decades on. The track's infectious groove, memorable hooks, and lavish production epitomise the magic of late-70s dancefloors which is it why it is such a staple in both nostalgic disco sets and modern dance compilations. This reissue offers up four different versions by the great remix king John Morales.

Methany (7:47)
Review: The Lost DATS Part One: Unreleased House Music 1997 by DJ Romain unveils a treasure trove of unreleased house tracks from the height of his creativity in 1997. The record kicks off with 'Here We Go Again,' a high-energy, New York-style house anthem characterised by its tribal rhythms and relentless drive. 'Over' shifts gears into a deeper, bouncier house groove with an infectious bassline that's tailor-made for the dancefloor. On the second side starts with 'In This House (Main Vox Mix),' a vibrant diva house track featuring Mark Echols, highlighted by its upbeat, piano-driven melody. Closing the collection is 'Methany Deep,' the heaviest track of the bunch; it's a masterclass in minimalism, creating a compelling rhythm-focused slow burner. Each track demonstrates DJ Romain's versatile approach to house music, making this a great discovery for aficionados of the genre.

Review: It's been a long time coming, but there's a genuine buzz about Peggy Gou's long-anticipated debut album, I Hear You. It delivers an accessible, entertaining and well-executed journey in which Gou's rarely discussed pop instincts are balanced out by music that nods to current club trends and nostalgia for the 1990s and earlier acid house era. So while opener 'Your Art' is weird, trippy, psychedelic and chugging and '1=1=11' is a Balearic neo-trance workout of the sort Salt Tank used to knock out in their sleep, 'Back To One' sounds like a lost '90s NYC dance-pop anthem, '(It Goes Like) Nananana' is an insanely infectious and piano-heavy slab of rave nostalgia, and 'I Believe In Love Again' (with Lenny Kravitz) sounds like a long-lost, hip-hop tempo Red Zone remix by David Morales.

When she does, anything goes from house to disco to techno, as shown on her fine DJ-kicks mix, and now she goes one better with a debut album that features already massive singles like 'I Go', 'Nanana', 'I Believe in Love Again' with Lenny Kravitz, and '1+1=11'. It is well crafted, packed with big hooks, warming basslines and plenty of musical charm that will likely take her to all new levels once more.

'Sove Yo (Save Them)' (Vokal mix) opens up and is an immersive blend of jazzy sax notes and soulful pads, percussive, organic house and deep basslines. Review: Here comes Dance On The Beat reviving a cheeky bit of Euro house from 2001 courtesy of Italian singer In-Grid. 'Tu Es Foutu' is a catchy little toe-tapper with some accordion flex and one of those boxy house beats that scream continental beach party. In-Grid's vocal rests over the top of the track with a sentimental melancholy, adding a shroud of depth to this loud and proud peak timer. The 'Harlem Hustlers Club Mix' of the track takes things deeper, chopping up the vocals and dubbing things out for a little more dancefloor heat, while 'Fisa FX' gives you the accordion in a sort of acappella form if you want to sample it or simply weave it over another track.

Up first is 'Always Be True' is a deceptively simple sound that brings straight-up dancefloor beats with hooky pads. 'House Party' then has more heavy kicks and wild percussive patterns to liven up any party and 'One' then brings a more cool and laid-back disco groove that has a slick modern twist. Last but not least is 'Sugar And Spice' which brings a touch of sophisticated and chic instrumental vibes. It's a fourth different sound on a versatile EP.

Marshall Jefferson penned plenty of Chicago's greatest early records and as a DJ helped lay the foundations for the sound too. As such he is a perfect choice for Defected's House Masters series and does a fine job of laying out some of its finest moments on this brilliant new mix. No matter how many times you hear these OG gems they still resonate, from the passionate vocals of Ten City to the iconic chords of 'Someday' via the darker jack of Jefferson under his Hercules alias this is an essential listen.

Review: The Plastik People label is a great repository for deep house that is timeless but never tired. Katermurr is next up to prove that point with an EP that transcends the ages. It opens with a lovely throwback Chicago vocal over fresh modern drums. After 'Wanna Be With You' gets you going, 'Let's Dance' brings the party vibes with some busy lead melodies that will get hands in the air old school style. 'Donny' then keeps it deep with some languid grooves and a nice smoky soulful vocal drifting above. Last of all is the more bumping and dusty drums of 'Show Some Love' to close out a classic EP.

Love To The World (Joey Negro Mizell Magic mix) (8:36)
Review: 'Love To The World', a sumptuously opulent and heavily orchestrated disco-soul number, transformed the fortunes of L.T.D - and their freshly appointed lead vocalist, Jeffrey Osborne - on its initial release in 1976. Here the full-length version of the track gets the reissue treatment for the first time in a while, with the band's gorgeous original mix (produced by none other than Larry and Fonce Mizzell) being backed by a fresh rub by house master turned disco king Dave Lee. The Z Records founder makes the most of the band's original vocals and instrumentation (admittedly with the addition of splashes of reverb and delay) on a seemingly re-constructed 'Mizzell Magic Mix' that brilliantly stretches out the cut by stripping back the orchestration and other musical elements at key points. It's a genuinely brilliant rework.

Vibe Check (6:12)
Light Of The World (6:02)
No Fomo (5:49)
Around The Corner (7:01)
Review: One of house music's most underrated artists is back with another one of his gloriously soulful and deep musical excursions. Alton Miller does vocal grooves like few others and despite having done so much of it already, his new EP Reflections Within is one of his best. Opener 'Vibe Check' brings to the fore the vocals of Jiinga Flame whose rich tones later in the soul next to freeform synth lines and over classic, dusty, cuddly house drums. 'Light Of The World' soon soothes with its balmy pads and gentle chord vamps and 'No Fomo' rides on slightly heavier drums but is still alive with jazzy motifs and the heart-aching tones of Jiinga Flame. 'Around The Corner' then bumps along in subtle fashion with smart synth dabs, smeared pads and an elegance that few can match.

Flashlight (7:15)
Mojo (5:38)
Review: Amsterdam legends Rush Hour look to the other side of the earth for some irresistible summer sounds here. Precious Bloom is an Indonesian group that offer up a delightful two tracker with the opening track 'Flashlight' inspired by Euro disco coupled with a hint of the city pop sounds of their homeland. It's awash with great arps and quick, funky disco drumming and sparing vocals. The 'Mojo' jam on the B-side "explores a rhyme of witchery" over fat-bottomed drums, tropical percussion and wavy bass undertones, all topped off with bright and breezy xylophone style melodies. Scorching to say the least.

Review: Bob Sinclar's Born in 69 reissue for 2024 presents an album filled with joyousness and infectious energy, showcasing Sinclar's talent for turning cover songs into dancefloor anthems. Collaborating with reggae crossover artists like Shabba Ranks and Kevin Lyttle, Sinclar infuses Caribbean influences throughout the album, evident in tracks like 'Love You No More' and 'New New New.' From the spirited revamp of the lambada in 'Give Me Some More' to the funky reinterpretation of classics like 'Mr. Tambourine Man' and Adrian Gurvitz's 'The Way I Feel,' Sinclar's creative flair shines through. The inclusion of tribal beats, psychedelic sitar and Middle Eastern flair adds depth and variety to the album's sonic landscape. While some tracks may lean heavily on auto-tuned vocals, the overall vibe of Born in '69 is undeniably upbeat and feel-good. It's an album that prioritizes fun above all else, inviting listeners to let loose and enjoy the infectious rhythms. Bob Sinclar proves once again that sometimes, all you need is music that makes you dance and smile.

Review: DJ Ell & Dream's 'Wings of Love' is a classic happy hardcore banger from 1997. It's not that it was particularly original when it dropped that made it so well-loved and widely played, but more that it was just an effective and feel-good gem. It was a real summer delight with sharp vocals and rap sample stabs, rushing breakdowns and of course the famous 'Mentasm' stab. Add in the reggae rhythm and bad-ass bassline and you have an unashamedly fun electric cut that will still do the business today.

Review: Parkway presents a fresh eight-track compilation full of weirdo new beat and janky Balearic, the WPKY Jams. Fashioned after the fictional metonymous radio station of the same name, this one opens with a confident DJ drop -""entertainment that works!" - after which a nostalgi-comic foray into the uncanny, retroistic world of revivalist disco funk and new beat is explored through the lilting grooves of Charley Kelley, T Kutt and Parkway Rhythm. Each track is well-emulated and nicely compressed, working in classic samples and motifs from each sound.

Review: It's a challenge to find a Euro house and dance music collection more jam-packed with hits than this one. Reminiscent of early 90s dance compilations, Music On Vinyl brings together two discs filled with iconic dance anthems and crossover sensations. Highlights include Haddaway's 'What Is Love', 2 Unlimited's stadium favourite 'No Limit', Snap!'s timeless 'Rhythm Is A Dancer', and the global smash 'Pump Up The Jam' by Technotronic. What sets this release apart is its inclusion of many other lesser-known yet unforgettable tracks like T-Spoon's 'Sex On The Beach' and Twenty 4 Seven's 'Slave To The Music'.

Review: It's been two years since the 2022 release of Young Pulse & Natalie Nova's multi-mix single 'Free', across the digital version of which we were graced with five exclusive mixes. With the 'original' itself and in turn being a cover of the Ultra Nate song from 1997, Pulse and Nova's version is a jubilant, disco-strung version, abandoning Nate's garage house proclivity for an upped sense of swing. This new vinyl edition also brings a fresh mix to the table, totting up the versions to six; first, there's the OG aforementioned 'Disco Tribute mix', as well as a 'Disco Dub' version, the new and never-heard-before highlight.

Review: Freaky, playful synthwork from Sao Paolo's Zopelar on the ever-reliable Tartelet imprint. Over eight immensely juiced, irreverent meditations on synth funk, boogie, deep house, Italo disco and acid, Zope showcases a mastery of foregrounding unconventional musical forces, cheeky and envelope-pushing analogue synth programming and genre-mangling at its very best. Highlights include the heart-in-mouth sway of 'Distraction', which at times sounds like a lovechild of Marcellus Pittman and Genesis-era Larry Heard, the eerie, questing squelch of seductive B-side opener 'Safe In The Dark' and the queasy, euphoric alarmism of lost freestyle hit 'Free Your Spirit (Ritmo II). Very addictive.
