  3. Rats It's Up (Jeff Parker remix) (4:56)
  4. You Don't Have To (Roberto Carlos Lange remix) (4:09)
Review: As visitors to his website will likely note after a quick scroll, "John Herndon is a drummer, music producer, and founding member of the group Tortoise." He's also credited with work under the flags Isotope 217, Five Style, Starlicker, Exploding Star Orchestra, Pulsar Quartet, not to mention A Grape Dope - just one of the Los Angeline's identities. And certainly one of the most musically forward thinking.

For any newcomers in the room, let's just say AGD has laid out more head-nodding beats than most of us have had hot dinners, setting benchmark after benchmark for hip hop instrumentals with jazz and electronic trappings. Here remixed by five equally astute names - Laetitia Sadier, Four Tet, Jeff Parker and Roberto Carlos Lange (no relation to the footballing titan, sadly) - this is maybe not the most definitive introduction to Herndon, but it's a mighty fine release packing plenty of variety and depth nonetheless

Cat: MIDA 02. Rel: 13 Apr 21
Deep House
  1. Signal (5:46)
  2. Swim (5:46)
  3. Lock (3:27)
Review: Tallin's MIDA already got those in the know talking with its first EP, and now they come through with more interesting sounds. Ajukaja & Ats is a production duo form the same city and they have a swirling, synth heavy sound that traps your head amongst the stars. The drum breaks on 'Signal' are deft, sleeping you afloat next to a tight bass riff and those well sequenced synths. 'Swim' is all squelchy sounds, bright daubs and alien lifeforms over more busted beats and 'Lock' heads off on a cosmic adventure with jittery modulations, distorted and crunchy drums and smeared pads that bring a sense of serenity.

  3. Hard Crew (feat DJM - Samurai Breaks remix) (5:45)
  4. Hard Crew (Mechanizm & Kin remix) (4:55)
Review: UK rave veterans Altern 8 hadn't put out new music in over 25 years. And then they dropped new single 'Hard Crew', which has been a staple of their live sets in recent times. The original is a bristling big beat tune with crashing drums and a snaking, filthy baseline. Things get more dreamy and leggy on the Denham Audio remix before two further versions head into hardcore and then jungle territory. A percentage of the profits of this release goes to the WeAreViable campaign which hopes to help the arts and events industries survive the pandemic.

Cat: AE 12LTD. Rel: 12 Apr 21
  1. Silent Vibrations (6:51)
  2. Astral (6:54)
  3. Drifting Sand (7:04)
  4. Uninhabited (7:28)
Review: Icy dub techno doesn't come classier than the strain you'll find on Iceland's AE Recordings. On their latest 12", they welcome Japanese producer Altone to the fold with four impeccably sculpted immersion chambers. There's a healthy amount of movement within the scenes Altone captures, avoiding the pitfall of dub techno becoming too soporific and instead creating a powerful sense of kinesis in the shimmer and shudder of the Basic Channel-indebted chords. 'Drifting Sand' is especially powerful, using a gorgeous, resonating tone which takes on an organic quality as it gently modulates over the subliminal rhythm section. Watch out though for the squashed, house-leaning funk of 'Uninhabited' if you want a low-key groover for the hypnotic crowd.

  7. Classic (Beaucoup) Trop Classic (radio dub mix) (1:42)
Review: On the Love Affair EP, Geneva-based producers Androo & Bony Fly have composed six tracks that strike the balance between sound experimentation and dancefloor orientation. The results of their research stemmed from a shared passion for dub, dancehall and its infinite variations, combined with a particular attention to subtle and harmonious sound textures. From the glacial and cavernous delay exercises so gloriously displayed on 'Xoxo Dub', to the deeply meditative tribal rhythms of 'Dancehall Science' (interlude mix) to the off-kilter club bounce of 'As A Sign" and ending with the lo-fi riddims of 'Classic (Beaucoup) Trop Classic' (radio dub mix). A solid effort.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Crazy 88 (10:29)
  2. Hemisphere (7:27)
  3. Blind Sequence (7:37)
Review: Fans of Romanian tech-house and minimalist techno should be well aware of the work of Vlad Arapasu. Since 2017 he's released a wealth of high-quality, club-ready material on the likes of Eastenderz, Kontent and Atapic. Here he makes his bow on Serialism with a typically tight, gently mind-altering three-tracker. The Bucharest-based producer sets his stall out on 'Crazy 88', a deliciously trippy number in which squiggly, acid-style electronics and spooky chords ride a percussively layered rhythm track and deep, bubbly bassline. 'Hemisphere' is pairs another typically glitchy, wonky rhythm track with hazy late-night stabs and metallic electronics, while 'Blind Sequence' peppers a shuffling minimal house groove with more mind-mangling electronic motifs and warming chords.

  2. Vinyl Voyage (10:30)
  3. Diamonds Cut (8:08)
Review: Whatever Delsin does, it does right, be that cutting edge new music or long forgotten reissues, It's the latter of those two missions which the Dutch label embarks on here with a second Ballet Mechanique re-issue from the Eevo Lute archives from all the way back in 1997. Across the three tunes, Jeroen Borrenberg explores crunchy electro and half time techno that operates way off in a distant realm. Even now, 25 years later, this still sounds like music that has come back from way off in the distant future. The bumping techno of 'Diamonds Cut' is our pick here.

  3. Dark Forest (4:48)
  4. Frustration (4:58)
  5. Black Material (5:10)
Review: Electro Records' popular Electro Transmissions series has gone from strength to strength this year, with excellent EPs from N-Ter and Alex Stark being followed by a mulyi-artist extravaganza entitled Xtermination Crew. The imprint's latest must-check missive comes courtesy of Martin Mastike's Blackploid project, which he reactivated earlier in the year via a 12" on CPU. There's plenty of classically intergalactic electro to be found across the EP, from the rising and falling synthesizer melodies and deep space chords of opener 'Xenon', to the meteor show vibes of 'Black Material', where chiming lead lines tumble down over punchy drums and a faintly foreboding bassline. Other highlights include the spacey chug of 'Frustration' and the Kraftwerkian synth-pop of 'Radiation'.

Review: t's rare to find a record with all killers no fillers but somehow Italian artist, producer and sound designer Bottin manages to do it each and every time. He has served up a few of the Artifact offerings before now and the 14th is another gem. 'Radio Activity' is all punchy Italo disco with euro vocals, then 'Toccami Ora' sets off on waves of nostalgic 80s synth sand brilliantly tinny beats. Leo Mas pops up on 'Do Be My My' to help add some exotic flair to the flashes of synth and crispy 80s beats. 'A Certain Pleasure' ends things on a more hands in the air and trance-y moment.

  2. Conversations (feat MC Fats & Cleveland Watkiss - Breakage remix) (3:45)
Review: Break's 2018 stepper 'Keep in It Raw' gets some special remix treatment here to close down the series. Calyx & Teebee step up first and layer in plenty of menace, with saw tooth synths bringing the sort of textures that are befitting of the tune's name. The crispy, stepping drum breaks are ever on the move and soulful hints come from the buried vocals. ON the flip, Breakage steps up with his take on 'Conversations' feat MC Fats & Cleveland Watkiss. It's a tune laced with fizzing static electricity, dub wise vocals and fantastic fills. Turn it up loud.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Following on from a sell-out first release, Serenity Records returns with a four track double-header from Thoma Bulwer & Anna Wall. In alignment with the label's policy of allowing the artists commissioned to choose a mental-health charity of their choice, 002 dedicates all its proceeds to Centrepoint - an organisation which seeks to combat the ever-growing problem of homelessness. The EP spans across the full spectrum of Techno, with the cuts varying from soft melodic textures, floaty synth work and a B1 that wouldn't stand at all out of place in a peak-time club setting - a nice surprise from this exciting new not-for-profit label...

Review: Atalanta's Byron The Aquarius has established himself as one of electronic music's most interesting artists. The super skill musician is a virtuoso on the keys and dab hand with making beats. He's got a wide range of sounds in his arsenal and is a perfect fit for the raw, MPC loving Apron label run by Funkineven, which is where lands now. This fulsome EP takes you on a jazz tinged house trip to the edges of the galaxy with far-sighted chords and reflective moods one minute and noodling, funk laced beat pieces the next. It's as high in quality as it is timeless.

Review: Joseph Caserta specialises in reworking little known soul and disco gems into brand new weapons. He does so on his own label as well Bridge Boots, with a couple lined up for the next few weeks. The first is this one, which features two version of '(M)', starting with the Baby Maker dub. It's a slinky bit of squelchy dub disco funk with lively perc and pixelated pads. Picking things up and taking them out of the bedroom and onto the dance floor is a 909 Mix with more upright drums and a fat bassline.

Deep House
  1. 114bpm (6:30)
  2. 108bpm (6:34)
Review: Joseph Caserta is rather good at creating brand new, under-the-radar remixes of tracks from soul greats, frequently delivering versions that add the original vocal acapellas to new backing tracks rich in reference vintage US house and garage. Ordinarily he signposts them a little, naming them things like 'Luther', 'Teddy' and 'Martin', but this time round the samples used are a little more subtle. As a result, it's his fine backing tracks that for once take centre stage. '114 BPM' is an energy-packed affair in which impassioned preacher vocals rise above a bed of wriggly TB-303 lines, bubbly electronics and unfussy drums, while '108 BPM' is a sparse, stripped-back and deliciously bass-heavy number that sits somewhere between beatdown, deep house and acid house.

Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Child Of Slave (6:02)
  2. I Love You (6:07)
Review: The latest club-ready 12" from the Wackie's imprint brings together two more killer cuts from the vaults of legendary producer Lloyd 'Bullwackie' Barnes - both of which feature long-serving vocal group the Chosen Brothers. On the A-side you'll find the full extended mix of 1979 single 'Child In Slave', a haunting and heavy number in which the Chosen Brothers' reverb-laden vocals seemingly drift above a decidedly dubby rhythm track rich in delay-laden instrumentation and deep bass. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour both the original and alternate 'version' mixes of 'I Love You', a later lovers rock number with definite dub leanings that's as sweet and glassy-eyed as they come.

Review: Athens Of The North is unveiling a whole wealth of new 7"s this month and as usual, each and every one is an essential purchase. This one in particular will resonate with a wide audience thanks to the ubiquity of the source material - Luther Vandross's 'Never Too Much.' There have been many versions over the years but this reggae take from Derrick Cross is special indeed, and an OG will costs basically too much for any sane person. Now a fully legit repress makes it accessible to all once more, and hurrah for that.

It's left to soar over late night chords and nice organic beats that are filled with jazz cool and lounge lushness. On the flip is 'Time' which has possibly and even more famous vocal. This one gets a slightly punchier groove to carry it along, with all manner of Balearic guitar riffs layered in. Both are guaranteed fun-time floor fliers.

And boy do they mean it for this 003; two unreleased corkers from Karl Francis here covering two different chapters of his sound. On the A we have 'Selassie I Sound' capturing his 94/95 era with badass Amen choppage and that rich soundsystem treacle vibe to the bass. On the B we have the late 90s Dillinja with a much more chiselled steppy beat as he flips the Cybotron classic into VIP mode. Neither track has been released before. All aboard!

Review: DJ Absolutely Shit put out a first EP in 2017 that now fetches eye watering amounts on Discogs. That was apparently a reissue of some old music found in storage, but now comes a first proper release that is just as irresistible. 'A Night at Shelly's' was first put out on that white label teaser, but by now is a bona fide banger. The 90s pianos over an elastic bassline, then the explosions of funky breaks, just hit different. There's a jazzy beatdown next to that on the a-side, then trance laced breakbeat joy on 'Chop Up The Tories' and last but not least, a real pinger in the form of 'Bang Into Breakbeach.'

Now it scores again with Horizons Sauvages, which was originally written for the exhibition of the same name by painter Marie-Laurence de Chauvingy de Blot. Both artists have a shared love of nature and the sound pallet here is just that. Organic, layered, endless, beautiful. Both pieces are meditative ones where new age music is reinvented with a less sentimental and cliched edge, and a more immersive and real world feel.

  4. Suna Yildizoglu - "I´m Gonna Dance" (unreleased Disco dub) (7:47)
Review: The Edit & Dub series returns for the first time in 2021, this time with a selection of reworks reportedly crafted by high-fliers Ron Basejam (as Ron's Reworks), Kon, the Owl and the Patchouli Brothers (the label doesn't state which producer was responsible for each edit, but don't let that put you off). The A-side sports two tidy, scalpel-style re-edits of dusty disco-funk cuts by Gino Dentie & The Family, with the EP opening revision of 'Movin' On' being arguably the pick of the pair. Things move up a notch on the flip, where a fine instrumental tweak of Biddu Orchestra's Italo-disco throb-job 'Voodoo Man' is followed by a terrific dancefloor dub of Suna Yidizoglu's 'I Wanna Dance', a boogie gem full of righteous bass and spangly synth sounds.

Review: Unlike its predecessors, the third and final part of Elements of Life's reissue of their 2013 double-CD Eclipse does not come on a 12" double-pack, but rather a double seven-inch. It contains some genuine gems from Louie Vega's disco/Latin/house fusion collective, starting with a suitably rousing, celebratory and mood-enhancing diso-boogie cover of Joubert Singers' classic 'Stand on the Word'. The EP also sports two other tidy covers - a rich, sun-splashed jazz-funk take on Stevie Wonder classic 'Pastime Paradise' and a lazy, hazy, carnival-ready interpretation of Brazilian standard 'Berimbau' - as well as a deliciously jazzy EOL original called 'Hot Music'.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Fantasy (feat Melanin) (4:25)
  2. Harlem River Drive (5:03)
  3. You Come Into My Life (feat Anane) (4:34)
  4. Bass Run (4:03)
Review: Louie Vega is one of the wonders of the natural world. He has been making timeless music for more than a quarter of a century and unlike many of his aged peers, he still very much keeps on knocking it out of the park. The fourth part of his Eclipse project with the Elements of Life crew is another golden one. 'Fantasy' (feat Melanin) is a soul drenched opener with broken beats and trademark instrumental flair. Things get deeper on 'Harlem River Drive' with its Latin flourishes before 'You Come Into My Life' is a gorgeous vocal cut with jazzy keys. 'Bass Run' is a shuffling, finger clicking, rump wiggling gem to close.

Who's Your Boss
  1. Pearl Farano & The High Lights Of Joy - "Who's Your Boss" (2:53)
  2. Zella Jackson - "Days Are Just Like People" (2:19)
Review: Greg Belson is a world leading gospel collector and DJ who had great success with his Divine Disco series. He continued his vital work with Cultures of Soul on the Devin Funk compilations series and now the label are serving up the many highlights on 7". Here we have
Pearl Farano & The High Lights Of Joy with 'Who's Your Boss', a high speed funk gem with in the pocket drum playing and energetic guitar riffs. The real star of course is the coarse vocal that cannot help but light your fires. On the flip, Zella Jackson's vocal soars next to summery flutes and raw, dense rhythm sections.

Controlled Processes EP
Cat: MORD 075. Rel: 16 Apr 21
  1. Processes (5:15)
  2. Another Try (4:53)
  3. Inwards (5:25)
  4. Complete Cycle (6:17)
Review: Strap in for this one because Lewis Fautzi is on a mission across the fierce four cuts that make up his Controlled Processes EP on Mord. There is perfectly punchy, tight and kinetic drum programming on 'Processes', which barrels along with a real sense of techno funk. 'Another Try' is a dark, whirring kicker for the minimalists and then 'Inwards' is a more barrel chatted, cantering groove that never lets up. It's the sound design and subtle details which elevate these tracks from mere functional tools to real standout gems. The wild 'Complete Cycle' closes in hammering fashion.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Volni (8:03)
  2. Flying By The Woods (7:02)
  3. The Inner Space (Tagir edit) (14:55)
Review: Finetune is the alternative alias of Slow Dance label founder Michael Dop, whose past releases using the moniker variously joined the dots between tech-house, minimal house and neo-classical. This EP is the first Finetune release for almost three years and marks Dop's first appearance on Harlo. Opener 'Vohni' is deep, squelchy and melancholic, with broken modem noises, tipsy chords and slivers of chiming melody slowly dancing atop echoing machine drums and glitchy pulses. Dop opts for crunchier drums and bolder bass on attractive club roller 'Flying By The Woods', while the previously unheard edit of 'The Inner Space', the title track from the first Finetune album, delivers a decidedly druggy mix of off-kilter, Romanian minimal style drums, odd metallic noises and subtle, swelling and cinematic sounds.

  1. Franz Scala - "Sweet Carillon" (7:24)
  2. Hysteric - "Pleides" (6:46)
  3. Beatfoot & DJ Dollpin - "Osdorp Discoteca" (5:39)
  4. Cherrystones - "Gom Reg Raga" (6:53)
Review: The Duca Bianco posse continue to plough headlong into the thicket of vintage dance music across genre boundaries, with a crack team of deepest diggers picking out lesser spotted jams and giving them an expert re-rub. First up, Franz Scala drops some synth-pop B-side dub mix magic on 'Sweet Carillon', before Hysteric leaps into action with the staccato body-popping bombast of 'Pleides', coming on like Yello and The Human League rocking out with Thomas Dolby. Beatfoot & DJ Dollpin bring a seriously salty slice of proto trance voodoo on 'Osdorp Discoteca', capturing the magic of the sound when a melting pot of influences such as Italo disco were feeding into the musical mix. Cherrystones finishes things off with 'Gom Reg Raga', a loping, polyrhythmic meditation with plenty of mysticism folded in between the earthen drums.
