Review: Avid Discogs fiends are likely to be already aware of Nothing Here Now..., the esteemed collection of audio recordings made by classic writer William S. Burroughs, known for macabre classics like Junky and Naked Lunch. First laid to record in the 50s and 60s, the rare recordings were later picked up by Throbbing Gristle members Genesis P-Orridge and Peter Christopherson, who sensitively compiled Burroughs' already spectral murmurings into a comprehensive and listenable final LP. This reissue comes via Dais, and once more provides a window into the troubled personal life of the writer, who desperately sought to escape city life.

Review: Cult beat writer, famous drug taker and frankly rather impenetrable mind William S Burroughs is a favourite of Will Self and hung out with Francis Bacon in Tangiers where many outsiders of that time would convene. Break Through In Grey Room is an album released back in 2012 that collects totters his cut-up speeches and recordings of performances between the years of 1960 and 1975. Some are pieces, some are discussions of pieces, all jump back and forth between the conscious to the subconscious are make for challenging but rewarding listening.

Review: Ivan Pavlov aka CoH's new experimental electronic opus Radiant Faults makes a point of its creation deriving from the use of a rare new synthesizer, the Silhouette Eins. Developed by the artist Pit Przygodda, the Eins is the centrepiece of this album for good reason: it is a unique bit of gear, in that it uses real-time video signal as its carrier for sound synthesis. This direct interfacing of visual and auditory realms inspired a haunting praxis in Pavlov, who began the album as a means to commune with ELpH, one of the "celestial beings" first communicated with and summoned by the supergroup Coil. Pavlov continues what Coil devilishly started here, fleshing ELpH out evermore into whispery echoes and sinewy traces.

Review: First released 22 years ago at the turn of the millennium, Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil has been described as one of Coil's most "mind-altering creations"; given the fiercely experimental and often otherworldly nature of their catalogue, that's some going. The album, which has now been fully remastered, was one of the first things Coil recorded following their relocation to Weston-super-Mare, and sonically it's as bleak, windswept, and barren as the town itself seems out of season. It's full of droning tones, modular blips, metallic melodies, slowly shifting ambient textures and musical motifs that lap in and out like waves. Furthermore, the album's standout moment, the near 14-minute 'I Am The Green Child', is like some mutant, experimental sea shanty crossed with a hypnotic ambient-industrial raga.

Review: Coil arguably were in their best form as the new millennium dawned as well as being already deep into their career. Musick To Play In The Dark not only lived up to its name, it marked a transition both sonically and astrologically for the band as they declared a new era as a lunar rather than solar group. Mixing gently melodious ambient motifs and immersive aural textures with more experimental sounds, spoken and sung vocals and a variety of unobtrusive rhythms, the album remains one of the most vivid and enjoyable outings in their vast, action-packed catalogue. Whether it's spooky distorted sounds on 'Strange Birds', 'Red Queen''s strange droning late-night piano soul, or the yearning ambient pop on 'The Dreamer Is Still Asleep', this is a subtly bold record packed with exceptional ideas.

Review: First compiled as a double CD in 2002, Moon's Milk (In Four Phases) is a suite of four EPs that Coil released seasonally via their in-house Eskaton imprint across 1998. The line-up for these sessions were John Balance, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, Drew McDowall and William Breeze. Recorded primarily at their home studio in Chiswick, London on the eve of a permanent relocation to the small seaside town of Weston-Super- Mare, the collection has long loomed as a pivotal and pinnacle work in the group's discography, but has never been officially reissued, or re-pressed on vinyl. Time has only ripened its tapestry of regal strangeness. Arranged sequentially in tribute to the equinoxes and solstices, Moon's Milk captures Coil at a revelatory crossroads, leaning deeper into improvisation, spontaneity and sound design. 'Moon's Milk or Under an Unquiet Skull' initiates the proceedings on 'Spring Equinox', a two-part netherworld organ seance woven from vocal drones, cathedral keys, seasick strings, and opiated undertow. From there, 'Summer Solstice' skews lighter but no less incantational, with Balance embracing his voice- as-instrument across lucid dream torch songs ('Bee Stings'), purgatorial spoken word ('Glowworms/Waveforms'), sultry chamber pieces ('Summer Substructures'), and falsetto ravings ('A Warning From The Sun (For Fritz)'.

Review: Drab Majesty was first set up by Andrew Clinco in the beating heart of the US music industry, Los Angeles. It's here, in a metropolis defined by both glitz, glamour and plastic, and wild experimentation and unconventional thinking, that the artist once best known as drummer in Marriages adopted a new androgynous persona, Deb Demure, and then drafted Mona D (Alex Nocolaou) as keyboardist and vocalist. That was 2016. Now here we are today, a few albums deep and faced with their latest offering. An Object in Motion takes bold strides in many directions, from the beautiful, natural ambient of 'Cape Perpetua' to goth-shoegaze worthy of Gary Numan himself, 'Vanity', the EP moves away from typical readings of genres like dark wave and takes us on a journey to a place defined by synthesised ethereality.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Drab Majesty's latest EP 'An Object In Motion' is a deep mix of blackgaze and goth psychedelia, consisting of just four tracks flirting with a mystical, guitar-driven spirit. Don't let the number of tracks deceive; the project clocks in at just under half an hour, in large part thanks to the long-form number 'Yield To Force', which pits strange distant alarm sounds against graveyard-shifting fingerstyle guitars, in what amounts to a night-drive around old town suited well to any atmospheric surrealist crime flick. Only your first and last tracks use vocals, and when they do, the combination of deeply high-and-low-end registers are great complements for the artists' lyrical musings on misery and wonderment.

Review: Contemporary LA cold-punks Drab Majesty bring together coldwave and and shoegaze for their latest EP, An Object In Motion. The four tracks therein are examples of those styles' most atmospheric and ethereal facets, showing off the distinctive vocals and guitarwork of the project's mastermind, Deb DeMure, the androgynous alter ego of one Andrew Clinco. A swirling, emotive fusion, something between Slowdive (enlisting the help of Rachel Goswell one track) and Romo, emerges.

Review: Described by their label, Dais, as "a stirring new chapter" in their musical story, 'An object of Motion' has its roots in a coastal break main man Deb Demure made back in 2021. It was material recorded there, largely using a vintage, bowl-shaped 12-string guitar, that formed the basis of the four-track mini-album. These recordings were then expanded on with help from collaborators Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Ben Greenberg. It's a decidedly psychedelic set all told, with Demure and company blurring the boundaries between neo-folk, psychedelia, the Cure, shoegaze and the sort of saucer-eyed, turn-of-the-90s bagginess associated with the Stone Roses. Most impressive of all, though, is 'Yield To Force', an undeniably cosmic, layered and effects-laden instrumental that ebbs and flows over 15 magical minutes.

Review: .Released in 2017, The Demonstration was the second studio album from Drab Majesty for California-based Dais Records, and certainly made their intentions clear, just in case there had been any doubts following 2015's debut LP, Careless, or during the preceding four years in which they had been active in some way or other. Dark, emotionally-charged futurism, with more than a subtle nod to the occult. While some have described the duo's work as 'lo-fi', for us that's a little misleading. As the difficult second goes to show, this is less about pared back aesthetics and more about retaining a real sense of what it means to be human in an increasingly electronic, processed, and artificial world. A big statement, even before you get to the lyrics themselves.

Review: London based hardcore-tinged post-punkers High Vis have slowly been amassing a cult-like following since the release of their 2020 debut full-length No Sense, No Feeling, while it was 2022's sophomore triumph Blending that landed them on tours with acts both far heavier and more melodic than themselves including Fiddlehead, Terror and The Chisel. Returning with their highly anticipated third LP Guided Tour, frontman Graham Sayle continues to serve as a voice for the downtrodden, pulling on his experiences growing up in Merseyside to paint poignant, pissed off yet vulnerable depictions of lower class living in an ever-lethargic home. Drawing from post-punk, hardcore, indie rock and baggy, High Vis are likely the first band to marry the sonic, visual and lyrical aesthetics of the hardcore and Madchester scenes into a unique and hypnotic blend that pays sincere credence to the likes of Oasis, The Stone Roses and (now) even the dance punk psychedelia of Primal Scream, yet wrapped up in the type of fuzzy stompers designed to encourage feral chants, fist bumps and stage dives.

Review: Hiro Kone says this new album "considers the power of absence as neither a lack or deficit, but as a quiet, indeterminable force to cultivate in this time of looming and unrelenting techno-fascism". Musically it is dark and rugged, with unsettling atmospheres and lumpy drums blurring the lines between ambient and deep techno. Plenty of the tracks have industrial overtones and make it feel like you're in some sort of factory in a state of post-production decay, which makes it all the more cinematic and absorbing. In these times of social and po-litical turmoil, it is a nice place to get lost.

Review: If this is your first encounter with Geneva Jacuzzi clearly you need to spend more time in the Los Angeles underground art-music scene. The artist has been building a huge reputation for herself through eccentric and often unhinged shows that border on performance pieces, often using masks, mind-blowing costumes, large scale art installations and confrontational design to leave a lasting impression. The fact her music sounds like contemporary pop stepped into a time machine, hit the 1980s button, and then realised travelling back through the ages renders things raw and lo-fi, also helps with the impact. Here were are then, album number three and her first for the exceptional Dais. It's mechanical, it's groovy, it's human, it's plastic, it's big, it's accessible, it's weird, and it's enough to make you remember pop music can and should be high art.

Review: In honour of the 25th birthday of painter-turned-DIY musician Tor Lundvall's hard-to-find debut album, 'Passing Through Alone', Dais has joined forces with the New York-based creative polymath to produce a career-spanning, five-disc box set. Naturally, it begins with that 1997 debut - on which he laid down his now familiar "signature palette of synth, sequencers, guitar, drum machines, and hushed spectral voice" (as the label puts it) - before delivering an expanded edition of his 2010 odds-and-ends collection 'Ghost Years'. What follows is inaugural CD editions of three of Lundvall's most recent albums: 'A Strangeness In Motion' (a collection of lo-fi pop tracks recorded across the 90s), 'A Dark Place' and 'Beautiful Illusions'. A fitting celebration of a genuinely unique artist.

Review: Dais are presenting the first vinyl edition of this 2004 album from Tor Lundvall, which was originally released as a hand-numbered CD of 955 copies on New Years Eve. Initially conceived as a delicate album of piano and electronics, Lundvall developed his ideas for Last Light into an expansive, hugely atmospheric album which captures the twilight seasons of the Northern Hemisphere in a profound manner. From faint whispers of homespun beats to moody melodic refrains and vast swathes of reverb at every turn, Lundvall draws you in close on this spellbinding record, which makes its way to wax at the perfect time of year.

Review: Drew McDowall is as complex and enigmatic an artist as Coil, who he worked closely with for many years. He's followed his own path as well as being tangled up in the world of Jhonn Balance and Sleazy, and now this box set on Dais offers an authoritative overview of four relatively recent LPs and additional exclusive material stretching over six CDs. 2015's Collapse, 2017's Unnatural Channel, 2018's The Third Helix and 2020's Agalma are joined by a disc of rare, alternative and extended versions and a disc of live performances. From oddly angled ambience to lithe, snaking electronica, there's a lot of different sides to McDowall's curious musical mind, and this extensive collection is a perfect way to navigate just part of it.
