Breaks 'N' Pieces Vol 7
Cat: BRKN 007. Rel: 18 Mar 21
  1. Memento (3:51)
  2. Sweetheart (5:44)
  3. Sapien Beat (6:07)
  4. Would You Do That To Me? (6:12)
  5. Feelz (4:51)
  6. Get Well Soon (3:36)
Review: Beats N Pieces keeps on knocking it out of the park with great artists making great tunes. For the seventh volume they call up Bartholomew Kind, who contributed one track to volume 2 late last year but is now handed all full EP to show what they can do. And the answer is lots - 'Memento' has an aching vocal over rinsing breakbeats, 'Sweetheart' is deeper, darker, more melancholic, then 'Sapien Beat' flip the vibe with a more summery, laid back garage kicker for those outdoor parties. The reverse offers yet more diversity from dark jungle to blissed out rollers.

  2. Binary Digit - "Ob_Break" (4:07)
  3. Victor Ziegler - "Dashington WC" (4:06)
  4. Victor Ziegler - "Nostalgic Aerobic" (5:24)
Review: Grenoble's Binary Digit (Dream Ticket/Opal Tapes) appears on a split EP here with Belgian debutant Victor Ziegler, to inaugurate new imprint Postal Code Records on From Berriat To Pitteurs (PCR001). On the A side, Binary Digit is in fine form on the wacky acid-jungle hybrid of '4020 Pitteurs FM' followed by the lo-fi chiptune electro of 'Ob_Break'. On the flip, Ziegler takes the rolling breakbeats of the '90s UK underground and merges them with the aesthetic of dreamy electronica of the time - namely on Warp or Rephlex - with the glassy-eyed and bittersweet epic 'Nostalgic Aerobic' which was easily the standout tune on this stellar EP. Keep your eye on Postal Code Records in 2021.

  2. Look Man (5:03)
  3. Jhoole (4:09)
Review: The burgeoning Booyaka series is back with a second sizzling instalment, this time from Bukkha and Nuphlo. They waste no time in getting down to business with 'Absolute' pairing brilliant drum programming with ruching bass and what sounds like the patter of tabala drums. It's moody but deep and inviting, then 'Look Man' bashes you over the head with old school jungle breaks sounding crisp as you like while the bass swings low. 'Jhoole' close sin liquid fashion with soulful leads and the sort of heartfelt piano keys that make you feel good.

  2. Conspire - "Late Night" (6:04)
  3. Soul Connection - "Dub Music" (6:05)
  4. Soul Connection - "Keep Me High" (6:08)
Review: Emerging US label Rhythm Syndicate collide into our lives with this exemplary quartet from two well-established rising talents. UK's Conspire take the A-side with two dark liquid gems. 'Deep Beat' nods its hat to Goodlooking with its bulging subs and jazzy flourishes while 'Late Night' maintains the emotions but adds more amen tension. Flip for the similarly barbed sounds from Serbia's Soul Connection. 'Dub Music' brings a meditative edge with its humming low end and dub influences while 'Keep Me High' brings the EP to a majestic, cosmic close. Precision timed for the sunnier months, Rhythm Syndicate have all the right ducks in a row here.

Cat: RNO 028. Rel: 24 Mar 21
  1. Betchu (7:22)
  2. Trauma Bond (7:24)
Review: Constrict delivers a fresh 12' showcasing his keen ear for various styles and sounds for Ronin Ordinance. Already racking up releases on labels such as Dispatch, Med School, Different Music and his own imprint Incidental Sonics, this producer has a very bright journey ahead. On RNO028's A-side we have 'Betcha', a serving of ultra soulful and intelligent drum & bass. An epic in the vein of the classic Good Looking Records sound, where a gorgeous pitched-up vocal is supported by fiercely intricate rhythms and dreamy atmospherics. On the flip, we have some properly deep meditative vibes on the half-time grey area experiment of 'Trauma Bond',which will appeal to fans of the Autonomic sound of the last decade.

  1. Check It (6:00)
  2. Choose Your Weapons (4:52)
  3. Stranger T'ings (4:55)
  4. Check It (Beagle remix) (4:42)
Review: The Amen Brother crew don't muck about. Their impactful sound is designed to be played loud at the peak of any night and now come three brand new tracks from Diplomat, with a remix by his NARC partner, Beagle. The opener is 'Check It' which fans might recognise from the Hardcore Lockdown album. It's all big samples, rave sirens and pumping basslines design to make you sweat. 'Choose Your Weapons' is a little deeper but no less bumpy then 'Stranger T'ings' rips up the rule book with frazzled synths, acrobatic vocal yelps and that hurried sense of hardcore groove that is undeniably effective. For his part, Beagle remixes 'Check It' into another weapon of as destruction.

Watercolors (blue marbled vinyl 10")
Cat: AKO10 012. Rel: 24 Mar 21
  1. Watercolors (9:31)
  2. Simple (8:29)
Review: Enigmatic Canadian producer Dodz last appeared in 2008 on a split EP with Finnish producer Fanu. On what is the second release for DJ Stretch's AKO Beatz this week, 'Watercolors' is jazzy and ethereal drum & bass on the more intelligent side of the spectrum. Unlike most other explorations in the genre thus, far this one really stands on its own - soothing, soulful and emotive. On the flip, we have the pitched down Amens of 'Simple', slowing down the aggression of those frantic drums into a mesmerising sense of freefall.

  1. Mai
  2. Dusty Bones
  3. Sanza High
  4. Tao
Review: Italian producer Donato Dozy rightly has a cult following as he has a fantastically well sculpted style whether making ambient deep techno or as is the case here, drum & bass. He opens up with the pulsing loops of 'Mai', which always hints as some sort of big rhythmic explosion that never quite comes. 'Dusty Bones' is a flurry of sci-fi sounds, tribal drums and frosted bass that leaves you in a spin. 'Sanza High' is a DJ Python style half stepper with menacing bass and 'Tao' is a more traditional drum & bass beat with trademark silky synths.

  4. DJ Progress - "Can You Reach?" (6:28)
Review: Following their 'Regeneration' EPs, new wax-only foundation-focused imprint Hardcore Vinylists present Logical Regression, an all-out exploration of the fundamental breakbeat sciences. E Hill and Mathieson go for the full on Helter Skelter feels with their stunning rave breakdown, DJ Style 90.6 digs deep into a more hardcore sound with a slower tempo and big velvet pads before 2Deep adds a little Krome & Time-style spaciness and soul into the mix with 'Metamorphosis' before DJ Progress closes on the dreamiest cut of the bunch - 'Can You Reach?'. Close your eyes and it could still be 1993.

  2. Block Nine (Konduku remix) (6:00)
  3. Ricochet (Felix K Reinterpretation) (6:08)
  4. They Live (Pessimist remix) (5:51)
Review: Some two years on from the release of Forest Drive West's rather good They Live EP, Midgar has decided to get the set remixed. They've chosen a very interesting selection of producers to provide the reworks, so it's little surprise to find that the resultant remixes are well worthy of attention. Wata Igarashi steps up first to deliver a decidedly dark, clandestine-sounding revision of 'Phosphenes' that adds ghostly chords, moody riffs and layered percussion to a pulsating broken techno groove, before Konduku re-imagines 'Block Nine' as a moody, spaced-out chunk of slipped techno hypnotism. Felix K's "reinterpretation" of 'Ricochet' is an atmospheric, ultra-deep, slow-motion affair full of starfall electronics, moody bass and intricately programmed percussion, while Pessimist's revision of 'They Live' sits somewhere between experimental D&B and skittish techno.

Review: AKO Beatz Music return with label chief DJ Stretch, teaming up with Italian producer Alessandro Corsini aka Enjoy as The Last Ronin. The mighty duo presents a soulful and life-affirming expression in intelligent jungle on the A side cut 'Fly Away' which is quite reminiscent of a certain classic by legend Goldie - it's your guess which one. On the flip, more dreamy liquid vibes await on the spiritual roller 'Don't Love' where slick Amens play centre stage beside breathtaking female vocals.

  2. Spread Love (feat Pete Simpson) (5:53)
  3. Contact (5:18)
Review: After its recent appearance on Hospital Records' 25th anniversary compilation, Makoto's superb D&B cover of Al Hudson & The Soul Partners' 1978 disco classic, 'Spread Love', has been released as a single. It's well worth picking up, specifically for the A-side 'Full Length Mix', which ekes out the life-affirming, mood enhancing pleasure by another minute or so. It's a terrific version - as is the original mix, which you can find on the flip - and features British soul man Pete Simpson, backed by a big group of backing singers, belting out the loved-up lyrics atop swooping disco strings, warm synth sounds, booming bass and skittish D&B beats. Bonus cut 'Contact' is worth a listen to, featuring as it does floaty ambient intros, aggressive post-jungle beats, wavy vocal samples and some seriously bowel-bothering sub-bass.

Review: One of Hospital's jazziest, understated musicians, Mitekiss returns to the label with another smoky late night session. This time we cruise around his native south London with 'Night Bus Stories', a sedate deep D&B soundtrack featuring the likes of Milo Merah, RSWT and Javeon. Highlights range from the soft focus jazzy flurries and soulful sermons of 'City Angels' to the much heavier and intense breakbeats of 'N68', which allows a rare peek into Mitekiss's much darker, heavier sound. Stunning.

  3. You Got Me (feat Alexa Harley) (6:26)
  4. Everywhere I Go (4:47)
Review: Since signing to Shogun Audio a couple of years ago, Monrroe (real name Elijah Symons) has delivered a handful of lauded, digital only singles. Here he finally brings his brand of simmering, soulful and emotion-rich drum & bass to vinyl for the very first time. He begins with the hugely evocative and atmospheric 'Out of Time', where Zara Hawkshaw's heart-aching vocals ride a chunky, hot-stepping rhythm, warped bass and sensitive musical flourishes, before joining forces with singer Emily Makis on the bolder and heavier but no less dreamy 'Never Too Old'. Over on side B, Alexa Harley adds some loved-up vocals to the tough-but-immersive 'You Got Me', while 'Everywhere I Go' somehow manages to sound both summery and autumnal, while also offering booming bass and punchy D&B drums.

Review: UVB-76 come barging into 2021 fashionably late with two tracks of obscene proportions. Overlook takes the lead with 'Ultra Violence', an incredible 8 minute dystopian take on big beat. Swaggering like a Jilted Generation offcut, densely processed and stretched to fit the modern pranged era, this is industrial strength breakbeat at a tempo that will relate to all corners. Hungry for more of an all-out junglised amen assault? Flip for the intense, heavy pressured 'Heart Of Darkness' with mysterious label mate Karim Maas and lose yourself in those vocal textures and lightning layers of breaks. Ultra good.

  2. Culture Vibes (5:00)
Review: Dutch ragga jungle label Lickshot Recordings bring together Pastaman and Tuffist for a hard hitting new single that marks just their 11th release in 12 years. It's a track that packs a lot in, from old school high energy breaks to reversed stabs, warped bass and some playful MC work all run through with plenty of alchemic studio tricks and effects. It's the sort of naughty tune that will send crowds wild, and on the flip 'Culture Vibes' is a more straight up jungle workout with unrelenting drums and retro liquid motifs that slowly ride up through the mix to bring the soulful vibes.

Known for his enigmatic project from the late '90s, he's since become recognised as a pioneer of dub techno. Now into its second release, you can be sure to expect more off-kilter and experimental UK sounds on Ryoko 02. We have '140 Break' on the A side, veering between knackered and breakneck and back again on this true stepper of the most unusual kind. On the flip, we have the more straight ahead rolling drama of 'Old Buzz' hammering the message home in proper junglist fashion.

It offers up some slick summer sounds on 'Swirl' with its stepping drums and lush, dreamy pads all filling the airwaves with good time vibes. On the flip, the super smooth and seductive 'Offchord' has more minimal and stepping drums, but they have a sense of funk in them and float in a cavernous cosmic space and are run through with more soft synthscapes that expand your mind. Both of these tracks come in a new art sleeve and really take you somewhere special.

Review: Alphacut return with another schooling as they recruit a motley collective of sage breaksmiths for four lessons in high level choppage. First on the A we have Sumone taking the lead, tapping into his Planet Mu roots with wild cuts and edits hitting at a hard and fast pace on 'Wicked Man Sound' while Dan Miles (who you might know as Skubi) spacing out the breaks with a whole gamut of funk chops and hits. Meanwhile on the B we hit 'Echo Chamber' from fellow German Istari Lasterfahrer where we're teased and teased before the drop kicks in around two and a half minutes while Ill K shuts the whole EP down with a spacious, funky twist that's not dissimilar to Photek in his Aquarius mode. Dark times call for darka music.

Review: Justice! Six months after the digital release, the vinyl gods have smiled upon us with this exceptional four-tracker from New Zealand's longstanding D&B soul man Tokyo Prose. Released on LSB's Footnotes, 'Gossamer' lives up to every silky smooth connotation the title suggests... The brisk stride and lonely piano strokes of 'Jacknife', the jazzy breezes and space of the title track, the dreamy haze of 'Lights Down Low' (with fellow respected soulsmith Satl) and the darker, more space-bound Commix-like finale 'Dust'. All still hitting with that clean, emotional and timeless weight but sounding even better for being on wax. Footnote worthy.

Review: Hospital's place in the history of drum & bass is already assured. The mighty label has been there, at the front, for many many years. Next to a vital stream of red hot 12"s for Das, they have put out tens of critically acclaimed albums and of course endless numbers of compilations jam packed with heat. The latest is another fine once that marks 25 years of the label with all the family favourites old and new featuring. Logistics, Flava D, DJ Marky, Dillinja, Ray Keith, you name, it, they all appear here, remixing killer cuts and tuning the gamut from liquid rollers to soulful anthems to minimal steppers.

Review: Following searing drops from the likes of Borai and Tamoshi, Vivid come correct once more with this blistering 12" from Yosh. You may have spotted Yosh elsewhere, such as with the formidable One More Night EP for Timeisnow, but now they're back on familiar ground for more of that head-tweaking breakbeat science. There are more ragged ructions like lead track 'Destruction', and dreamier fare such as the blissful 'The Source', but throughout it's the diversity in drum palettes and needlepoint editing skills that make Yosh's tracks so vibrant and deadly. Miss this at your peril.
