  5. Point That Thing Somewhere Else (5:28)
Review: Boodle Boodle Boodle is so good they named it thrice. The one from The Clean actually combines two crucial releases from their standout back catalogue. Namely, 'Tally Ho!' and 'Platypus' from a 7" and the Boodle Boodle Boodle EP, which was of course the first release the Dunedin trio ever officially put out. All of those originals are now 40 years old and so to celebrate they get a newly mastered reissue by Tex Houston with assistance from the Alexander Turnbull Library New Zealand, and packaging that was assembled with a careful watchful eye from The Clean's David Kilgour and Robert Scott.

  1. Tally Ho! (2:32)
  2. Platypus (3:18)
Review: Dunedin trio The Clean released their first music 40 years ago. That was an EP named Boodle Boodle Boodle and it was quickly followed up by this 7", featuring 'Tally Ho!' and 'Platypus.' All of these aforementioned are actually being reissued as one newly remastered package this month, but if you just want the latter two singles then this reissued 45 is the one. It comes with packaging that was assembled with a watchful eye from two band members, David Kilgour and Robert Scott, and musically is just as tight as it ever was.

Against The Blade
Against The Blade (limited green marbled vinyl 7")
Cat: 466C 657368. Rel: 05 Nov 21
  1. Against The Blade (3:25)
  2. Twisted Skin (3:57)
Review: According to news stories when this EP was first announced, The Horrors' own frontman Faris Badwan describes the band's new song, 'Against the Blade', as a "further descent into chaos". A track about giving up hope, abandoning control, and coming to terms with the eternal human position of facing off against the world, rather than actually being part of it.

Listening to the tune now it's easy to buy into that description. The band have always had an uncanny ability to terrify and enthral, and this is a prime example of that. Opening with a searing refrain-cum-wasp-in-jar-noise, we soon explode into a monster metal riff with solid funk undertow, making for a tune that's destined to be a live favourite. Over the other side, 'Twisted Skin' sticks with the industrial-leaning feel.

Model Village
Cat: PTKF 12547. Rel: 22 Oct 21
  1. Model Village (3:57)
  2. Model Village (feat Slowthai) (3:57)
Review: RECOMMENDED
'Model Village' is IDLES at their most unapologetic best - giving subtlety a wide berth in favour of an on-the-nose observational diatribe that delivers a knock-out-blow to the Broken Britain we see before us today. Arguably one of their most accessible tracks in terms of musicality, firmly sitting in the rock 'n' roll camp (albeit with flashes of punk-ish fangs), it's also (mostly) radio friendly, and yet utterly unforgiving and uncompromising with its message.

"Got my head kicked in in the village / There's a lot of pink skin in the village / Hardest man in the world in the village / He said he got with every girl in the village" could be the lines that summarise what we're talking about best. Basically a cutting, sardonic, honest and depressingly accurate take on these islands of ruin, racism and exceptionalism. Simply put, we really don't know where we would be without this band.

Warm You
Cat: MRB 7201. Rel: 12 Nov 21
  1. Matty & Mandaworld - "Warm You" (4:30)
  2. Mandaworld - "Spoonfeed" (3:19)
Review: Mr Bongo serves up the new collaboration here from Mandaworld (bereft known as Amanda Hicks) and partner Matthew Tavares, who is Matty of the much loved jazz outfit BADBADNOTGOOD. The pair have a magical musical synergy that really shines through here as they interweave and uplift one another. 'Warm You' is a real classic that fits in the canon of timeless ballads. It is a dreamy pop song doused in oodles of reverberating guitars and mellow shoegaze vibes that evokes a world of nostalgic feelings. 'Spoonfeed' is just as warm and lush but a little more subdued.

Review: Falle Nioke is back and boy are we glad about it. Last year he worked with sir Was on the sublime Marasi EP and now here he is with a second collaboration with Ghost Culture. Nioke is a multi-lingual singer and percussionist who hails from Guinea Conakry in West Africa. He delivers his verses in Coniagui, French, English, Susu, Fulani and Malinke and also plays a range of instruments that provide authentic accompaniment to his singing. For this one he fuses all that African heritage with pulling electronic sounds to make an EP that takes in funky rhythms, acid tinged club tracks and plenty in between.

Ron Next Door
Ron Next Door (40 gram vinyl 7")
Cat: ERC 112. Rel: 18 Oct 21
  1. Ron Next Door (alternative mix) (5:50)
  2. Sitting On Top Of The World (5:26)
Review: Happenstance can be a fortuitous element. A union-funded single discovered in a dusty store, a long disbanded band found, leads to unreleased post punk dubs in a box of unreleased demos.

Formed during the mid-80s in the downbeat town of Walsall, their music is a blend of disparate influences from 50's crooners, blues and reggae to Killing Joke and The Bunnymen; Ron's Neighbours were out of step with the perfect pop of the C86 indie generation.

Their only single - "To The Fight" - a split 7" was supported by the Trade Union Resource Centre, while many gigs were benefits for striking miners, leading to a loyal local following.

Engineered by Ozzy Osbourne's brother Tony, tracks were recorded at an 8 track bedroom / home studio, while a terraced house served as rehearsal space. Here Ron Next Door was born. When a tape recorder was left running it captured the long-suffering neighbour for posterity. His outburst gave the band and song, its name.

Experimenting with drum machines, the resultant jam track, here in its "Alternative Mix", languished unheard until now. Ron's 'Black Country' tones lead to driving bass / percussion against crashing Stratocasters and repeating, refrained vox - a post punk dub turned symphony.

The B side, Sitting On Top of the World, is an indie anthem, becoming their theme, a blend of grandiose and banal that characterised their songs.

Play The New York Dolls (purple vinyl 7")
Cat: GLAMS 002. Rel: 05 Nov 21
  1. Sonic Youth - "Personality Crisis" (3:42)
  2. The Pastels - "Lonely Planet Boy" (4:15)
Review: RECOMMENDED
While New York Dolls are widely considered one of the earliest names on the Big Apple punk scene, revisiting tracks like 'Personality Crisis' proves just how much change took place between 1973 and the later years in the decade. The original version is rooted in a traditional barroom rock 'n' roll aesthetic which, at the time, would definitely not have sounded so traditional.

Breaking from this, dons of wall-of-sound stuff Sonic Youth opted for a lo-fi garage-y interpretation that successfully breathed new life into the song when this interpretation landed in 1993. Flip it to find 'Lonely Planet Boy', which back in the 70s was a piano and guitar workout defined by a somewhat laidback vocal delivery. A wonderful contrast to the A, in 1987 The Pastels offered up a much bigger take on said track that still retained the original's air of cool. Proof, if it were needed, that great music evolves in the right hands.
