Review: In this collection, Luke curates music with the perfect blend, inviting listeners on an esoteric journey of enlightenment through sound. Exploring late-night, after-hours musings; Everything Above The Sky (Astral Travelling with Luke Una) is a new compilation by the enigmatic DJ, promoter, and cultural curator. Following the E Soul Cultura phenomenon, this compilation comes at a pivotal moment in Luke's career as he travels the globe. Avoiding any chance of his sound being pigeonholed, Luke has assembled a tracklist that feels transcendental, stepping off the grid and back to source. Luke's Everything Above The Sky manifesto describes the music as Astral Travelling in the meadowlands with acid folk, spiritual jazz, midnight hocus pocus, cosmic psychedelic soul, magical whirling love songs, Brazilian ballads of light into machine soul gospel dreaming, Balearic bossa and Outer Space ancient African drums. Expect something different and highly unique with this listen.

Review: Simon & Garfunkel's Bookends stands as a monumental achievement in music history, being a beacon of the late 1960s while exploring themes of relationships, identity, society, and mortality. This concept album transcends time, earning its place as one of the greatest records ever made. Mobile Fidelity's 180g SuperVinyl edition, mastered from the original analogue tapes, elevates the album's brilliance, offering a listening experience that magnifies the intricate details of its recording sessions. The album opens with the gentle 'Bookends Theme,' setting a reflective tone before plunging into the experimental soundscapes of 'Save The Life Of My Child,' which brilliantly incorporates dialogue, street noises and an eerie echo of 'The Sound of Silence.' 'America' stands out as a heartfelt narrative, seamlessly flowing into the melancholic 'Overs.' The poignant 'Voices of Old People' and 'Old Friends' evoke nostalgia and contemplation, with the closing Bookends theme urging listeners to cherish their memories. Classic tracks like 'Mrs. Robinson' and 'A Hazy Shade of Winter' showcase the duo's signature sound, combining evocative guitar work and harmonized vocals. This reissue reaffirms Bookends as a timeless masterpiece, worthy of rediscovery and celebration.

Review: MJ Lenderman's latest album, Manning Fireworks, is a showpiece of his evolving artistry and unmistakable voice in the indie rock scene. Hailing from Asheville, North Carolina, Lenderman has crafted a collection of songs that seamlessly blend indie folk, roots rock and gritty guitar riffs. His music celebrates everyday life, from the mundane to the profound, always with a touch of humour that hints at something darker beneath the surface. The album showcases his signature styleiwarped pedal steels, skuzzy guitars, and that unmistakable high-lonesome warble that feels both familiar and fresh. Whether recorded in a lo-fi home setup or polished in Asheville's Drop of Sun studios, Lenderman's music retains its authenticity and charm. The tracks on Manning Fireworks snake their way through various moods and settings, but each one rings true to Lenderman's vision. Fans of Lenderman's previous work will find plenty to love here, from the rusted-wire guitar solos to the sharp, witty lyrics.

Review: Even the Forest Hums: Ukrainian Sonic Archives 1971-1996 stands as a monumental collection, capturing the evolution of Ukraine's music from the Soviet era to the dawn of independence. This compilation, meticulously assembled by Matt Sullivan and producers David Mas, Mark McNeill, and Shukai Records, offers an unprecedented glimpse into Ukraine's rich musical heritage. The collection spans from Soviet-era folk and rock to underground electronic experiments, reflecting both political dissent and creative evolution. Through rare tracks from folk-rock group Kobza's 'Bunny' to the Caribbean-tinged 'Remembrance' by Vodohrai, the compilation showcases a diverse array of genres and influences. The 80s and 90s contributions highlight Ukraine's vibrant underground scene, featuring experimental sounds like Vadym Khrapachov's synth-driven 'Dance' and Radiodelo's industrial '90'. This vinyl edition features Maria Prymachenko's folk art that really compliments the package well. Vitalii Bardetskyi's insightful liner notes offer context and depth, framing the music within the broader scope of Ukrainian history and resilience. This compilation not only preserves a pivotal era of Ukrainian music but also contributes to the ongoing recovery of the region.

This 4LP set is an explorative set for fans, featuring previously unreleased studio sessions, alternate takes, and live recordings that showcase her fearless exploration of jazz and fusion. The set delves into Mitchell's evolution during the late seventies, a time marked by groundbreaking works such as Hejira (1976), Don Juan's Reckless Daughter (1977), Mingus (1979), and Shadows and Light (1980). This collection highlights her creative peak, capturing both the raw energy of live performances and the introspective depth of studio work. Notable inclusions are live tracks from her 1975 and 1976 tours, collaborations with jazz legends like Herbie Hancock and Jaco Pastorius, and rare recordings from the Bread & Roses Festival and the Anti-Nuclear Rally. The set offers a rich auditory experience with material sourced from original stereo reels, Nagra film recordings, multi-track tapes, and radio broadcasts. The newly mixed tracks are complemented by high-resolution digital transfers from the Bob Dylan Archives. The 36-page book is a significant highlight, featuring exclusive photographs and an in-depth conversation between Mitchell and Cameron Crowe, revealing personal insights and anecdotes from this prolific era. Review: Yet another reissue to come out via David Tibet's current reissues occupation Cashen's Gap is the incredible eleventh Current 93 record Swastikas For Noddy. Playing up recurrent motifs of ruination and spoiling - always present in Tibet's music since early - every facet of this record seems to find an impertinent glee in juxtaposing the beautiful with the ominous, the dainty with the dearth. Perhaps it's a cursed record, as its intent spelt doom from the get-go: it first ran into copyright trouble after its title provoked the ire of writer Enid Blyton, who certainly did not appreciate the apparent Nazification of her beloved character. But over that hump came the real backstory: Tibet said, "I took a load of acid on the top of the house where Rose McDowall was living and I had a vision of Noddy crucified in the sky and it really impressed me...", which led to a crazed but short-lived Noddy consumer fanaticism on the artist's part. This record was of course born of that period of Noddy thrall; it nonetheless mystifies the gaudy children's character and toy's allure, couching it in bewitching pagan folk monodies and dastardly end-of-times industrial-hell crescendos. Perhaps when we forget Noddy, we forget the nation. Remastered by The Bricoleur at Bladud Flies!, and with the original artwork refreshed and reborn by Rob Hopeye, this 12" vinyl picture-disc comes in a full-colour die-cut sleeve, which is printed on both the outside and inside.

Review: Gemma Hayes is a Mercury Prize-nominated singer-songwriter and this is her long-awaited sixth album, Blind Faith. Throughout the record, Hayes explores themes of longing, empowerment, freedom, and repression in this deeply personal work and really encourages listeners to reflect on her message and immerse themselves in its abstract lyrical nature. All of that fine word smithery is accompanied by tender guitar picking, haunting synths and swooning cello. This is Hayes's first album in a decade and is a remarkable one that shows plenty of subtle evolution in her style while also remaining relevant to older fans.

Review: First released in 2018, The Light Is Leaving Us All is one of Current 93's (David Tibet's) most up-to-date explorations in sound, and is noted by the artist himself as one of his most recent favourites. An expansive collaborative cluster of entities, some human and others perhaps not, assisted Tibet in the making of this morbid neofolk opus, which, when not indulging droning guitarscapes and dulcimer twinkles, humours a spoken word and found sound palette, constructing a conniving persona that perhaps farcically laments the loss of suburban niceties (clues in the track titles like 'The Birds Are Sweetly Singing', 'The Policeman Is Dead', 'The Postman Is Singing', 'The Milkmaid Sings' and 'A Thousand Witches' portray a macabre picture of the dead underside of sleepy hometown life). When Tibet sings, he brings a knowingly resigned tone to the record, sounding almost genderless in his evocation of experience and loss of domestic innocence.

Review: Two-piece band Hermanos Gutierrez, formed of brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutierrez, here continue to take influence from 1950s Latin American music and film, on their latest record El Camino De MI Alma. Recalling the barren landscapes stretching from the Midwest to the lower lacuna of the Gulf, this eight-track record is effortless in its ability to evoke boundlessness, the ineffability of the ever-extending horizon glimpsed while travelling, despite its ostensible sound remaining quite roomy, barely spring-reverbed if there is any treated sense of space. 'Hasta La Muerte' and its ilk are our highlights, bringing out the bare but lunar-luminescent feel of the vista; this is an album for guitar at arid dusk, not dewey dawn.

Review: Los Angeles - city of angels, city of lights, camera and, perhaps less discussed outside the USA, city of the American record industry. But while the poster billboards sell us one thing about this vast and somewhat confusing urban sprawl, the reality on the ground is often far different. Or at last much less waxed and pruned, glossy and superficial. Jessica Pratt is a great example. LA has so much great music happening it's hard to keep up, and a lot of the most interesting things are closer to those grass roots in need of constant irrigation due to the southern California sun. In this instance, Pratt's fourth album uses myriad influences, from Bossa Nova to 1960s pop, but it's the quintessentially Los Angeline psychedelia that really carries things - a byproduct of Hollywood's inherent surrealism.

Review: Huw Marc Bennett takes direct inspiration from the music of Wales on his new album 'Days Like Now'. It leans heavily on acoustic for and melody as a result of being written during the pandemic on a stripped down setup of just bass and acoustic guitars. As such it has a quiet vibe, an intimacy, a late night and low-lit feel throughout that makes it all there alluring and personal. The drums that feature are lo-fi and fuzzy round the edges, the bring a happy energy to the tunes without dominating and Welsh language fans will be glad to see all the titles are native, too.

Review: Singing siblings from Millbrae, California, a suburb of swinging San Francisco, the Flower sisters - their actual surname - released one full length album, Genesis, in 1969, at the tail end of a decade that had transformed youth culture and society as a whole. The sound could not have been more apt, a combination of floaty surrealism, delicate pop, and floral grooves (whatever that means). Aside from a couple of other appearances - background vocals on two Cal Tjader albums, and Wendy's work on Jane Weaver's Fallen By The Watchbird LP - they vanished into the ether from which they came, only celebrated by artists who have looked to recreate and represent their work, most notably Super Furry Animals with 'By The Sea'. Diving into the quiet, calm, soothing and emotionally nourishing originals here is proof of why those who remember are still in love with what they heard.

Review: Swan Songs: The Singles 1976-1981 is an impressive 29-track collection that encapsulates Dave Edmunds' dynamic years on Swan Song Records, presented in a double-LP format. Launched by Robert Plant and the members of Led Zeppelin, the label welcomed Edmunds, whose retro rock revival style resonated with Plant's own musical inclinations. This compilation highlights every A and B-side from Edmunds' tenure, starting with the chart-topping 'Here Comes The Weekend', co-written with Nick Lowe. The tracks provide a nostalgic journey through a golden era of music with a blend of classic influencesifrom Chuck Berry to Rodgers & Hartiinfused with Edmunds' distinct sound. Listeners will find familiar gems, including 'Bad Is Bad' and 'Queen Of Hearts,' which were later popularized by Huey Lewis & The News and Juice Newton, respectively. With fresh mastering by Grammy-winner Michael Graves, this collection not only preserves the authenticity of the original recordings but also celebrates Edmunds' unique artistry. The packaging includes cherished picture sleeves and insightful liner notes as well making this package extra special.

Review: The long awaited third album from Nora Brown was recorded at the historic St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn Heights, and is about as strong an advertisement for joining her growing legions of fans as you could ask for. A marvel of dexterity, the acclaimed New York artist turns her hand to a dizzying array of instruments over the course of the record.

These include three separate banjos, one of which is more than 130 years old (having first belonged to her great-great grandfather), and another five-stringer once owner by her mentor, New Lost City Ramblers member John Cohen, which belongs in the permanent collection at the Library of Congress. Random-is background facts done, again we find Brown seemingly saturated in the culture, heritage, and sounds of her homelands, straddling Americana, alternative rock, bluegrass, folk, soul and pop in a way that seems effortless, if it weren't all also so deeply personal.

Review: "The lyrics are the real thing, tangible, they're not metaphors," Bob Dylan told the New York Times when he was first promoting this, his - drum roll - 39th album. Fittingly to the point, 'Rough & Rowdy Ways', released six decades into his career, deserves a very special place in the heart and minds of everyone who encounters it. Honest and direct, it's easily one of the most personal and open from the legend's oeuvre, and arguably the record most willing to compromise with listeners. Feelings are not hidden, instead they're impossible to miss. Adding to the open-veined impact are the arrangements themselves. Dylan has never shied away from paring back, but here his still-sensational voice is given so much room you almost want to wrap it up in your arms for fear it's too exposed. In short, potentially the closest thing any of us will get to having an actual conversation with this icon.
