Review: The "Coordinates" series is a fresh project from Freerotation regular and concept-embracing techno producer Aboutface. According to the detailed blurb provided by the label, each track "explores the aural terrain of two sets of location coordinates around the world". So, if you stuck the co-ordinates listed as the A-side title into Google Maps, it would point to the Chiapas region in Mexico where our hero encountered (and recorded the sound of) bats. On the resultant track, his ultrasound bat recordings rise and fall around a glistening, life-affirming workout inspired by both the Motor City and early UK ambient techno. Side B, whose title co-ordinates point to a location in Lincolnshire, is an ultra deep ambient house masterpiece laden with tropical rainforest noises and poignant melodies.

  1. Time Blur (8:09)
  2. Mon Mon (8:09)
  3. Run The Sun (7:59)
  4. Lunar (8:17)
Review: Lithuanian drummer Marijus Aleksa is cutting his teeth into house and tech with this solo debut via the YAM Recordings imprint, out of London, after having come to prominence thanks to his involvement in various groups, namely Contra Jazz, Mock?no Nuclear and Saga. As such, these four tracks present a delightfully jazzy strain of house music, starting with the electro-minded groove of "Time Blur" and followed closely by the more bumpy, more jovial sounds of "Mon Mon". Over on the flip, "Run The Sun" breaks the groove and dissipates into a much more loungy sort of flex, full of haze and mystery, while "Lunar" picks up the tempo and launches a minimalistic, drum-led pseudo-house rhythm with a distinctly organic aesthetic.

Conversation EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: HEIST 033. Rel: 19 Sep 18
  1. Conversation (7:29)
  2. This Is The Place (5:51)
  3. From The Heart (8:08)
  4. Conversation (Awanto 3 remix) (9:23)
Review: Swiss trio Alma Negra can do no wrong in our eyes, with their recent outing on Lumberjacks in Hell being one of that label's strongest releases to date (which, given its strong track record, is high praise indeed). This four-tracker on Detroit Swindle's Heist Recordings is packed full of dancefloor treats, too. Choose between the spacey deep house/heavily percussion Afro-house fusion of title track "Conversation", the hybrid boogie/dreamy deep house bliss of "This Is The Place" and the warm and woozy, percussion-rich deep house loop-funk of B-side opener "From The Heart". Fittingly, "Conversation" is given a going over by fellow percussion enthusiast Awanto 3, whose trippy remix adds a low-slung jazz bassline, wonky vocoder vocals and just the right amount of wayward electronics.

  1. Open Your Head (5:58)
  2. EEYE (5:01)
  3. Common (5:30)
  4. People, Places, Things In Spaces (6:48)
Review: Take a listen to the four cuts that make up Jackson Almond's WotNot Music debut, "Open Your Head", and you'll hear a myriad of influences and musical reference points. That the DJ/producer has managed to get them to compliment each other is particularly impressive. Check, for example, the jaunty U.S garage/jazz-funk/broken beat/Afro-house fusion of "EEYE", for starters, or the sparkling opener "Open Your Head", where glistening guitars and marimba style melodies ride a rubbery synth bassline and rich, life-affirming chords. Almond's love of layered percussion is once again evident on the piano-sporting, sun-kissed deep house shuffle of "Common", while "People, Places, Things in Spaces" sees him pepper a jazzy, off-kilter deep house groove with the kind of spacey jazz-funk synths that were once a hallmark of Herbie Hancock albums.

  2. Love Changes (feat Evan - Malik Rebirth 2 mix) (8:12)
  3. I Am (feat Howard Wazeerud-Din II - instrumental) (7:18)
Review: The "Rebirth EP" is former Detroit Beatdown originator Malik Alston's first vinyl excursion in seven years, and it is nothing short of magical. The biggest treat is A-side "I Am (Vocal Mix)", a sublime chunk of undulating, soft-touch Motor City deep house soul rich in Afro-tinged percussion provided by Craig Huckaby, lilting brass lines laid down by Hardmatter's very own Zapata, amongst stunningly emotion-rich vocals. On the flip, you'll find a fine instrumental version featuring dubbier production and more of Howard Wazeerud-Din II's mesmerizing trumpet solos, as well as Alston's "Rebirth 2 Mix" of deep, dreamy and impeccably soulful shuffler "Love Changes". All in all, a seductive deep house triumph.

  1. Nebulosa
  2. Asteroides
  3. O-Type
Review: Brazilian producer Apoena has been steadily issuing serious heaters for labels like Underground Quality and Stuga Musik since 2010, but the core of his output can be found on his own Allnite Music label. The Nebulosa EP features more of the immersive, shimmering tech house tones he's built his name on thus far, leading in with the swirling wonderment of the title track before swerving on the B side into the more punchy, deliciously dubbed out "Asteroides." Bringing the most overtly house-oriented sounds on the record, "O-Type" signs off on a weighty, head-nodding groove carefully crafted for eyes-closed transcendence, whether you're rocking the jam in your headphones or on the floor.

  1. Form Of Change
  2. A Mental Image
Review: Charles Noel has been enjoying a resurgence of late, with his early explorations as Archetype resurfacing on a number of reissue labels. Future Primitive have tapped Noel up for two cuts that typify his left-of-centre approach, leading in with the sharp-edged beat excursion "Form Of Change" that will appeal to all lovers of reduced, off-kilter rhythm workouts. "A Mental Image" adopts a softer stance, laying out a bed of silken pads and errant tweaks that tap into the head-tripping mood of vintage techno while maintaining the future-minded thrust that makes true machine music timeless, whichever era it was crafted in.

  4. Nada Nada (Simple Symmetry 'What Happens After Death' remix)
Review: This time in Calypso, Aristidez takes us on journey trough the streets of Lima Peru. The Chaos and the spirituaity of this old country are noticable on all of this tracks. Rumbling percussions and vocals, harmony and rythm, darkness and light all come togeter through the use of samples to show the quality of this young up and coming producer. "Nada Nada" it's the mantra that will help you go through the morning in a grey and cloudy city. "Reyerta" represents the violence of many Latin American cities having a hard time. Evoca its the mix between the first two where peace and violence find them selves in a catarchic release of energy. Symple Symmetry brings the tempo up for their Nada Nada remix asking everyone "what happens after death".

  4. Downstreamed (Mount Liberation Unlimited Ethereal Teen Dream version) (6:57)
Review: Last year, Art Alfie finally went solo after spending the first portion of his career collaborating with fellow Stockholm resident Mr Tophat. This EP for Toy Tonics follows hot on the heels of last year's debut album on Studio Barnhus and a widely acclaimed studio hook-up with Cassy. Our pick of the bunch is woozy and soft-focus opener "Downstreamed", where lilting synthesizer melodies and slowly shifting chords sashay in and out of a drowsy and dub-flecked slow motion rhythm track. Fellow Swedes Mount Liberation Unlimited provide their own "Ethereal Teen Dream" version, which craftily re-imagines Art Alfie's original as a defiantly dubby blend of Scandolearic bliss and hypnotic deep house. Also worth checking is the bounding dub disco/deep house fusion of "Bondkatten".

Review: Russian imprint Private Persons are back, following up some terrific releases by the likes of Florian Kupfer, Jensen Interceptor and Locked Club. Taking over the reins this time is one of the more enigmatic figures in the Moscow music scene - Art Crime. He serves up some dusty and emotive deep house on his latest long player entitled Memoirs of Naive - a collection of old/previously unreleased songs written over the last five years, and described by the label as 'melancholic late-night bedroom diaries full of reflections and hopes.' Highlights include the evocative opener "Seoul", the chilling ambient interlude "Dearth" and the bittersweet melancholia of "Images Of You" that's just perfect for all the solitary dancers out there.

Cat: LT 060. Rel: 06 Sep 18
  1. The Rainbow Song (7:18)
  2. The Rainbow Song (S3A Broken SSL remix) (5:40)
Review: Following a surprise outing on House of Disco, Ludovic Llorca returns to Local Talk for the first time since 2013's much played The Same Thing EP. In its' original form, The Rainbow Song is a near perfect example of Llorca's particular brand of deep house - all stretched-out chords, a bustling bassline, tough but shuffling beats, cute cowbells and bluesy vocal samples. It sounds like an underground summer anthem in waiting. There's more of a funk-flecked urgency about the excellent S3A Broken STL Remix, which introduces further vocal samples and, arguably, an even more addictive groove. Certainly, it feels a little wilder than the original, whilst retaining Llorca's unique deep house perspective.

Cat: ASQ 001. Rel: 05 Sep 18
  1. The Conditioning Track (NYC mix) (5:45)
  2. The Conditioning Track (North London mix) (5:23)
Review: Jimmy Asquith is undoubtedly best known for being the man behind the ever-growing Lobster Theremin label, though he does have production pedigree following a string of releases under the Chicago Flotation Device and Tom Hang aliases. Here he uses his surname as a pseudonym for the first time, serving up a two-track missive that bristles with celebratory peak-time intent. The A-side "NYC Mix" of "The Conditioning Track" is a percussive, energy-packed treat, with sweaty vocal stabs rising above a deliciously heavy and distorted rhythm track and a mind-altering UK garage style bassline. The flipside "North London Mix" is similarly tough, albeit a little less percussively intense and more musically rich thanks to the addition of a classic deep house motif. Recommended.

  1. Cookie Monster (10:16)
  2. What Do We Do (8:57)
Review: Alex Attias seems to have found a soul mate in Luman Child AKA Pascal Strauss, a talented musician whose rubbery basslines and jammed-out electric piano lines feature prominently on both "Cookie Monster" and "What Do We Do". While many will be drawn towards the eyes-closed soul chorus vocals and elastic deep house swing of the latter, it's the jaunty, party-ready A-side that's arguably the strongest dancefloor workout. Similar in ethos to the Herbie Hancock/jazz-funk-influenced work of Dego and Kaidi Tatham's 2000 Black project, the track is arguably one of the strongest of Attias's long career.

  2. Fantasy (7:02)
  3. Fu2uR3 (6:14)
  4. Track 4 (Omega) (6:55)
Review: More from glassy-eyed deep house retro-futurist Michael Baltra, who returns to Of Paradise following a string of fine EPs for the likes of Lost Paradise and Tape Throb. In keeping with this previous output, "Can't Explain It" ripples with colourful, kaleidoscopic intent, with the producer serving up warm and melodious cuts that doff a cap to vintage records from Chicago, New York and Italy. The title track, where male and female spoken word vocals, dreamy chords and blissful synthesizer lines weave in and out of a crunchy drum machine rhythm, sets the tone, before Baltra tips a wink to Calypso of House and Morenas on daydreaming deep house anthem "Fantasy". Also impressive is closer "Track 4 (Omega)", a more chugging and lo-fi affair that nevertheless comes smothered in soft-focus synth-work and dreamscape chords.

Review: It's been many years that Rob Belleville has been exploring the deeper end of the house and techno spectrum, channeling the inspiration of Detroit and Chicago into impeccably realised cuts that suit attentive listening as much as a physical response. This latest transmission from the Dutch producer comes via Common Dreams, who have recently released the likes of Miles Atmospheric and John Shima. Belleville is a natural fit among these sorts of names as he unfurls billowing clouds of pads, chords, strings and leads over intricately programmed beats. The whole EP is immaculately produced, but we'd especially recommend the spacious dub pulses of "Rise N' Shine."

Immersive and captivating, it's the perfect set opener that allows you to take any direction you wish. Flip for "Dreaming Of Paradise", a yearning, barbed soul cut that's reminiscent of Lee Burridge 15 years ago but at around half the tempo. Powerful and dreamy, it's complemented by a bubbling version from Oracy that blows Closet's doors off. More please, Bluey.

Review: The master returns: Atavisme chief Pepe Bradock presents four eccentric groove experiments executed in ever impressive fashion for his label's 19th release. This one is more uptempo than previous efforts, as heard on the trippy "Panique Manucure" - a wonky and textured stomper incorporating layers of disorienting samples, with grinding monosynths and rusty rhythm patterns meandering between. Proving he's got oddball grooves for any occasion, there's the moody slow burner "Furious Yogi" or "Ave Psychic" on the flip - which sees the French legend slam out the most unique take on techno that we've heard in a while.

Review: Happily, Magic Feet man Craig Bratley is on fine form on this surprise Futureboogie Recordings outing, which we think includes some of his strongest material for some time. Check, for example, throbbing opener "99.9", a body-jacking, Italo-influenced throb-fest that wraps '70s horror soundtrack synthesizer melodies and foreboding riffs around a surging arpeggio bassline. Andrew Weatherall is on hand to remix, delivering a vastly different but rather brilliant interpretation that places exotic, snaking synthesizer melodies and yelping vocal samples over a Love From Outer Space-ready pitched-down groove. Elsewhere, "Italo Love" is an all or nothing tribute to the glory days of Italo-disco and "Take Me To Bedford Or Lose Me Forever" is a top-drawer chunk of intoxicating slo-mo synth-chug.

The EP is a proper serving of boogie-down antics including a terrific remix by label staple Ned Pegler aka Medlar. Late night deep house with a French touch is catered for on the ultra smooth "Clubtronic", while "Miss You" will captivate with its creamy Rhodes and gentle swing-fuelled groove. Originally released on UK label Cyclo back in 2003, BRS formed in 1998 and was comprised of DJ Ben Vacara, Rob 'Twin' Evans and Mr Mulatto.

Review: Hailing from the Rhythm Plate multiverse, Pressed For Time is one of the many outposts carrying the work of Matlock's finest house music protagonists. Reaching beyond the regular roster of Goshawk, YSE and the full-blown 'Plate, this latest transmission calls on deep cover UK house crew BRS, also known as British Rhythm Services, who step up with some crucial workouts for sophisticated dancefloors. The quartet of Ben Vecara, Rob Evans, Steve Wilson & Dom Thompson have a sizable legacy behind them, not least from the early 00s when they were regularly rolling out releases for the likes of 20:20 Vision, Cyclo and Friends & Families. After a quiet patch their return is marked out by a broad spectrum of deep house delights locked onto the kind of shuffled grooves that Rhythm Plate heads should be more than happy with, and plenty of loose, live-sounding keys to boot.

Review: Some five months after the second "Tale of Tales" EP arrived in stores, LaGaffe Tales treats us to a third volume in the popular series. Like its predecessors, the EP boasts cuts from a quartet of rising stars. Carlo kicks things off with the fluttering Balearic breakbeat breeze of the blue-eyed soul-sampling "Bonfim", before Jonbjorn takes us even deeper via the bubbling beats, sunset chords and glassy-eyed electronics of "Opall". Over on side two, Ari Bald envelops a house-tempo hip-hop beat with undulating synth-bass and spacey chords on "Neat Doctor", before Moff and Tarkin brilliantly layer up tribal style percussion on the trippy nu-disco/dub disco fusion of EP highlight "Lakkris".
