Cat: IMP 014. Rel: 30 May 18
  1. 100Hz - "Kinetic Wasp" (7:06)
  2. Charonne - "Vice City" (5:27)
  3. Cobert - "Spaceghetto" (5:55)
  4. Charonne - "Formule Stardust" (6:17)
Review: Domenico Rosa and Riccardo's Imprints label has regularly delivered the goods since making its debut back in 2013. Predictably, this multi-artist affair is also rather impressive. French twosome Charonne is arguably the star of the show, delivering two tidy tracks: the bouncy and far-sighted "Vice City", where '80s synth-funk style motifs and acid-funk electronics ride a bustling groove, and the similarly-inclined, elastic tech-house-funk of "Formule Stardust". Elsewhere, turn-of-the-90s survivor 100Hz delivers a fine chunk of woozy deep house/funky techno fusion and Cobert delivers some spacey and chunky, mid-set tech-house. In other words, all four tracks are playable and worthy of your attention.

Drums #1 (12" repress)
Cat: FIT 004. Rel: 25 Apr 18
  1. Part 1
  2. Part 2
Review: ** FIT REPRESS ** Naturally for a producer who prefers to remain anonymous and call themselves A Drummer From Detroit and name their debut EP Drums, both tracks here veer into dextrously percussive house territory. Amidst the dizzying, jazz influenced rattle of Shake Shakir style rhythms that characterise the A Side workout our erstwhile protagonist weaves in desperate vocal strains and overtly dramatic piano and horn stabs which only serve to increase the panic inducing pace. The flipside treatment is slightly slower in its execution, yet increases the jazz funk melodic elements which make it the less a hectic and more involving production.

Drums #2 (12" repress)
Cat: FIT 017. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Part 3 (6:01)
  2. Part 4 (4:49)
  3. Part 5 (7:01)
Review: Six years ago, Humberto "Andres" Hernandez donned the A Drummer From Detroit alias for an EP of heavily percussive workouts on Fit Sound. Here he finally offers up a follow-up, once again combining his own recorded drums and hand percussion with carefully selected samples. First up is "Part 3", a jazzy and groovy affair where undulating organ riffs and subtle samples buzz around a layered drum groove. "Part 4" is deeper, slightly looser and arguably more musically layered, with Hernandez's live drums once again to the fore, while "Part 5"- arguably the most percussively intense of the three tracks - sees the producer make great use of jazzy synths, carnival style whistles and eyes-closed vocal samples.

  1. No Way Back (vocal) (5:00)
  2. No Way Back (5:00)
Review: While both Adonis' music and the entirety of the TRAX imprint are usually found slamming hard on 12", Get On Down have decided to reissue 1986's "No Way Back" onto 7". Is this a conceptual move? Perhaps, but what we do know is that this material was among the very first house productions to break off from disco and boogie, so the format is somewhat justified. The tune itself is an unmissable anthem to this day, with its seductive bass engulfing anything in its path, not to mention those drum-machine swings! There's an instrumental, too, in case you wanna fool around a bit.

Eritrea EP (12" + insert)
Cat: ANR 003. Rel: 30 May 18
  1. Alma Negra - "Haleto Lale Lalo (Saho)" (6:47)
  2. SOL - "Erytrea Nedege (Saho)" (6:45)
Review: The Alma Negra collective are based in Basel, Switzerland and are made up of Miajica, Dario Rohrbach and Dersu Figueria. The third release of the 12 Rhythms series (on their eponymous imprint) is dedicated to the music of Eritrea. On this EP, they wished to showcase the music of the Saho People from the Region of Zula. The word 'Saho' translates to 'nomad'. The spiritual and esoteric vibe of their native music is captured magically on the epic "Haleto Lale Lalo (Saho)". On the flip, a previously unreleased edit of "Erytrea Nedege (Saho)" by the band SOL is featured. A truly primal groove that will hypnotise you into submission. The exact source for these edits of the Saho sound are said to be very rare, and are based on traditional folk songs. In conjunction with Colophon Records, the label was able to access and work with these sounds.

Ce N'est Pas Bon (JD Twitch edit) (1-sided hand-stamped 10'' repress)
Cat: AABONUS 10. Rel: 15 Jun 18
  1. Ce N'est Pas Bon (JD Twitch edit) (5:20)
Review: Long term advocates of JD Twitch's selecting skills will be very happy to see the appearance of this 10" featuring the Optimo man's edit of Amadou & Mariam. Originally made back in 2008, this edit has been a staple of JD Twitch sets and was intended to be released as part of the third volume of the superb charity focused Autonomous Africa series that was issued earlier this year. Licensing issues put the kibosh on those plans, but with the edit having belatedly been granted permission Twitch elected to issue it as one off 10" instead of waiting for volume 4 in 2015. As with the best edits, Twitch's amendments to the original version of "Ce N'est Pas Bon" are subtle and understated, adding little rhythmic elements that make it easier to slip into a DJ set and hypnotise minds. All proceeds will once again go to the Mtandika mission in Tanzania.

  1. Track 1 (4:52)
  2. Track 2 (6:38)
  3. Track 3 (8:42)
Review: We last heard from "vinyl-faced artist" Apparel Wax back in January, when the man (or woman) of mystery unleashed a second scorching EP of high-grade deep house on Apparel Music. For EP number three, the Son of Sleeveface takes a different tack. The untitled opener, for example, is a layered, floor-friendly, jazz dance-friendly sample collage full of vintage funk drum breaks, swinging percussion solos, fluid jazz piano solos and less than subtle nods towards hip-house. While a little messy, it's undeniably enormous fun. "Track 2" sees old wax-chops beef up and slightly weird out a jaunty, horn-heavy Afro-funk cut, while the flipside excursion is a romping deep house revision of a swirling and chiming '80s soul hit.

  2. Modular Project - "Leaving" (Acid Pauli remix) (6:44)
  3. Lele Sacchi - "Dreaming Won’t Do" (Tiger & Woods Nightmare mix) (8:06)
Review: Proper deepness yet again from Italian imprint Rebirth, with volume two of their limited series which features a new one by Greek house hero Argy. His track kicks off the A side titled "Let's Play" and features the evocative vocals of Blue Jay over his hypnotic and soulful epic - it's the same kind of dancefloor drama that's earned him releases on Ibadan, Versatile and Bedrock over the years. This is followed by the emotive and sensual remix of Modular Projects "Leaving" by German Acid Pauli, which gets a stellar groove injection of the deeper kind. Finally there's some properly soulful and sunkissed 'hands in the air' vibes on the electric remix of Lele Sacchi's "Dreaming Won't Do" by Tiger & Woods.

Review: Two and a half years after the first mysterious Arktapes earth landing comes another from the unknown. Once again fully anonymous. Once again no title tracks included. Once again denting the techno landscape with its mischievous, hissing, jittering off-beat dubby playfulness. A total trip from the opening dubby ripples and funky Detroitian hi-hat twists of "Track 1" to the final shimmering echoes of the beatless wonder that is "Track 4".

  1. Where The One Is (5:33)
  2. Double Wheelin' (5:33)
  3. Reprise De Fonk (5:45)
Review: "Where The One Is", the lead cut from Art of Tones' latest Local Talk release, sounds like a peak-time anthem in the making. Seemingly crafted using a mixture of cut-up Philadelphia soul samples, jammed-out new disco instrumentation and jazzy, ambidextrous house beats, it feels a little like a tooled-up, slightly more low-slung version of Blackjoy classic "Moustache". You'll find more low-slung, disco-fired, Clavinet-sporting heaviness on side B, where stomper "Double Wheelin" provides further guaranteed peak-time pressure. As for "Reprise Du Fonk", it appears to be a quick-fire dub of "Where The One Is" featuring even more elastic bass guitar, jazz-wise guitar licks and life-affirming electro piano solos.

Let Go Of This Acid (12" repress) (1 per customer)
Cat: UNFINISHED 01. Rel: 06 Jun 18
  1. Let Go Of This Acid (7:23)
  2. Acid Lines (6:16)
Review: According to the accompanying press release, Magnetic Man member Artwork (AKA early dubstep pioneer Arthur Smith) spent three years trying to clear the vocal samples used on this EP. While many would have given up trying, Smith persisted - and eventually got agreements from all concerned - due to the fantastic response the track has been getting from DJ plays. Certainly, the track is something of a beast: a full-throttle TB-303 acid assault that not only boasts seriously mind-altering electronic hooks, but also some seriously sassy vocal snippets and a fantastic breakdown/drop combination. Equally as impressive is flipside "Acid Lines", whose familiar, echo-laden vocal refrain is probably the one that caused his lawyers most headaches. Naturally, it acts as the wiggly acid tune's main hook.

Review: Melbournian eccentric Bell Towers is back on Public Possession for the first time in 2018, carrying with him all the tools to turn your common-or-garden flat-pack bookcase into a portal to another dimension. In its EP opening "Dance Mix" form, "IKEA Hack" pits a druggy, chugging analogue machine groove against chiming melody lines, glossy synth-pop chords and twinkling piano lines that inspire the same kind of euphoria that most feel after leaving a branch of the well-known Swedish furniture chain. It's accompanied on the A-side by the rather delicious, slow motion Chill Out Mix, while side B is taken up by a long, lo-fi, eccentric and crackling Baba Stiltz remix that helpfully features vocal samples explaining how to turn some off-the-shelf consumer product into something entirely different.

  2. Lovelee Dae (Bicep dub) (7:05)
Review: Given their well discussed love of vintage U.S house and garage, it's little surprise to see Bicep taking on the potentially tricky task of remixing Blaze's 1996 New Jersey classic, "Lovelee Dae". Wisely, the Belfast boys have retained many of the original's sumptuous elements -sweeping strings, rich chords and summery vocal included - and expertly fused them with carnival-friendly drums and a deliciously tactile, Italian house style bassline. The fine vocal mix is accompanied by a similarly impressive Dub, where the duo makes merry with floating, delay-heavy vocal snippets, filters, and their own dense, party-rocking rhythm.

  1. Is This Really A Party? (7:46)
  2. Grandgousier (5:56)
Review: Publicity-shy Parisian Pepe Bradock is more than worthy of his cult status. Even so, it would be nice of him to give a bit of warning when he's about to drop a new 12". Exodus 8, his first outing of 2018, pretty much turned up with no prior warning. A-side "Is This Really A Party?" is, somewhat surprisingly, a much more straight-forward dancefloor track than we've come to expect. Although there are plenty of weird jazz samples and straight noises, the sludgy, bass-heavy rhythm track tips a wink to his lauded, turn-of-the-millennium deep house workouts. Flipside "Grandgousier" boasts some seriously snappy and bumping beats, with the eccentric French producer smothering it in more quirky electronics, delay-laden, barely audible vocal samples and trippy effects.

  4. Limewire (Tuff City Kids remix) (6:53)
Review: Spleandor & Squalor founders Brame and Hamo started 2018 in confident fashion, serving up an EP that contained some of their strongest tracks to date ("Club Orange"). There are plenty more fine workouts to be found on this relatively speedy follow-up, from the swirling but driving early morning intoxication of "Parade Rain" - all elongated synthesizer notes, sun-bright melodies and symphonic chords rising above thrusting bass and beats - to the more jacking and spacey "Sports Complex". Arguably even better is the breezy, loved-up and rushing retro-futurism of "Limewire", which joins the dots between Italian dream house and early breakbeat hardcore. This in turn is given a chunkier, 4/4 house tweak by giddy retro-futurists Tuff City Kids, whose version is predictably endorphin-fuelled.

Review: Long serving Irish producer Derek Carr continues to enjoy a resurgent career following his appearances on For Those That Knoe, now stepping up to Love Notes for some of his most effervescent house jams to date. "Sidewinder" is a sprightly, Detroit indebted house workout pitched at peak time, while "Stepping Out" trips into classically informed techno for the back room crowd. "Search For Intelligence" is a great example of how to execute sweet natured electro, and "Indigo" ditches the kicks to twirl into more of that Motor City flavoured machine soul magic for the mind.

Review: Run by boss man Al Bradley out of Leeds, 3AM Recordings now present the third edition in a compilation series. Following up previous appearances by Carlo Gambino, Tommy Vicari Jnr and Makka, they bring the heat once again. From Ceri's sleazy and grinding "Acid Jam" which is classic 303 mischief, Dubble D aka Moodymanc's "Darkdays" has a rather soulful and emotive slo-mo bounce (despite the name!), while Berlin dwelling Irishman Michael Lovatt's "Say What You Want" is a sexy late night groove - that's perfect to nail that 3:00 vibe indeed.
