It was two in two for Alabama Shakes when they first unveiled this bonafide swamp rock masterpiece. Released in 2015, Sound & Color took the blueprint laid out with Boys & Girls and then kicked up into fifth gear. It's soul. It's blues. It's sweat-soaked funk. Most importantly, though, it's the kind of record that keeps giving the more you listen, sounding equally at home in the 1950s as it does the 2010s.
It's hard to really put into words the level of husky, pained, heart-on-sleeve musicality at the core of this record. Brittany Howard's voice might never again sound as utterly distraught and reflective, pained and somehow filled with hope for a brighter day. Individual readings aside, this is among the finest blues records to land this century, and ranks up there with some of the greats of the 20th, so don't sleep on this edition complete with closing tracks recorded live at the legendary Capitol Studios.

Review: Never too shy for irony, Australian rock band from Melbourne, Amyl and The Sniffers, are keeping the mullet cuts and beer spitting sound of the southern land's sound well alive. It's Rough Trade that have taken up Amyl and The Sniffers for their debut album recorded in Sheffield with Ross Orton towards the end of 2018. Six months on and the four piece are rattling the walls more than ever with a raucous ballyhoo of garage-punk that sees the band's ferocious Pouges-y mix of Irish drunkenness hit the wall with the Californian sounds of Pennywise and Australia's own Frenzal Rhomb. With thrashings of guitars, unique and raw Australianisms, and sweaty, smashing drums: Amyl and The Sniffers are popping off.

A childlike darkness. I don't want to meet the devil half-way and mourn what we have right now. The future is cartoon, the prescription is dark, but it's novelty. It's just a joke. It's fun." If you're not already on the Sniffers shitlist, rest assured by the end of the year, you'd want to be.

Review: Aussie-punk brat shitheads Amyl & The Sniffers are nowadays snorted in the same chopped up line of angular, mainstream accessibility eschewing alt rock that has garnered the likes of Idles, Viagra Boys and (closer to home) The Chats worldwide acclaim. Following on from 2021's pub rock on meth sophomore stomper Comfort To Me, and last year's 7" swipe at armchair music journalists on 'U Should Not Be Doing That', the crew finally return with their highly anticipated third full-length Cartton Darkness. Produced by Nick Launay (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and recorded at Foo Fighters' 606 Studios in Los Angeles, according to Amyl herself (Amy Taylor), the mission statement this time around is even more brash than the accompanying sonic barrage - "Cartoon Darkness is about climate crisis, war, AI, tiptoeing on the eggshells of politics, and people feeling like they're helping by having a voice online when we're all just feeding the data beast of Big Tech, our modern-day god. Review: You don't get to call your band Amyl & The Sniffers if the music is anything short of corrosive, in the best possible way. Launching at a serious pace from the off, this is punk at its modern best - a juggernaut of sweat, swearing and uncompromising songwriting that's only rival for your attention comes in the form of riffs and gritty chord instrumentation.
But the Melbourne, Australia band's second LP is far from a simple rehash of the first, which we could have also described in similar terms to those you just read above. This time round things feel more thoughtful, perhaps even patient in certain moments. Of course they still wear 'weirdos' on their sleeves, tongues often firmly placed in cheeks. But there's a depth here to the songwriting, a retro and introspective feeling that reveals far more than the debut album let us hear.

Review: The rise of Black Midi has been hard to keep up with over the past few years. Their first release was no less than a link up with Can's Damo Suzuki in 2018, and their Schlagenheim debut LP followed promptly afterwards and won them unanimous praise the world over. Since then, they've blazed a trail out in front with an angular confection of art punk that's catchy and obtuse in equal measure. After 2021's Cavalcade, they're back with Hellfire, a third album which builds on the melodic growth of their last while notching up the intensity. Lead single 'Welcome To Hell' comes snarling out in a cacophony of funky, discordant bombast - the sound of a band relishing their success as a springboard for bigger, wilder ideas.

Review: The best thing since the Klaxons or Bloc Party have arrived. black midi! The student art rock band are bringing a new youthful energy and slight of malice back to the arena of post-indie inspired alternative guitar and synth music. They make this overtly known from the start with the supercharged opener that is "953", introducing an album that is said to have laid down eight of the record's nine tracks in just five days. Drums are fast and skittering, rhythms are dancey and guitars keep it Madchester jangley. "Speedway" (is that a wry Prodigy reference?) is among the album's highlights alongside the punk-funky "bmbmbm" and the short but trippy "Years Ago". Blunt's latest solo album Black Metal is perhaps his most high profile to date, seeing him pitch up on long running UK indie Rough Trade for a 13 track journey through his singular craft. Review: From struggling 1980s underdog to darling of the 1990s Britpop scene, Jarvis Cocker's legacy will always be as a role model for the dejected, bespectacled poets hidden in and among Britain's hardest drinking pubs and weirdest countercultural clubs. Originally released as his second solo album of the post-Pulp years, in 2009 to be exact, while this end of his oeuvre doesn't hold the same mythicism as earlier work, there's plenty here deserving of this fresh pressing.
In many ways there's not a great deal here to distinguish between lone wolf and the band he fronted, but this is more a sign of creative force than running out of ideas. Here we have intelligent, rousing indie anthems ('I Never Said I Was Deep'), easy listening balladry with wry wit ('Hold Still') and barroom ballsiness ('Angela'), wrapped around a self-deprecating look at a break-up, and it's further evidence of Cocker's genius.

Review: London-based duo Jockstrap have fully remixed their album I Love You Jennifer B from 2002. It was shortlisted for a Mercury Prize that year and was written by the band's Taylor Skye, who also had the idea for this remixed version while making different versions of the album's tracklisting. Several guests feature including Ersatz and Ian Starr and the inspiration for these new takes was texture and sound rather than the musical material itself. "It's an experiment! I'm still learning" says Syke of a wildly eclectic album that fuses club, noise, pop and indie into a thrilling contemporary record.

Review: Critics talk of 'timelessness' like it's going out of fashion, but when it comes to Irish folk the word carries more clout. Lankum, a four piece contemporary outfit born from the ever-thriving Dublin scene and a duo project, Lynched (named after the band's two founding brothers, Ian and Daragh Lych), are a perfect example of what we're talking about. Live In Dublin is a great reference point to understand this. If ever there were sounds made to be experienced IRL then it might be the noises these multi-instrumentalists evidently love to make. Simultaneously capable of transporting us to peaty moorlands of the past, while hitting nail on head as to where we are today, and presenting bold visions of how sounds might develop tomorrow, from rousing crescendos to pin-drop-quiet, this is relentlessly captivating stuff.
