Cat: SYNCRO 61. Rel: 28 Mar 25

Andas
Torc (ERP version)
Review: Synchrophone proudly present the latest Gerard Hanson aka. Convextion release; a head-turner moment, since the last proper EP by the 2845 artist was over seven years ago, with Vectorvision for the EP 'Zy Clone'. Since then, Convextion has been hard at work, eschewing all concavities for a purely thermal, fluid sonic exercise. 'Torc' and 'Andas' are unsettling, looming techno visions, confecting a hypothetical world in which the hard sciences have taken total precedent over the human, resulting in a rapid dissipation of heat. The only energy that remains is that which is fed through the machine, as further evidenced on the sinister murk-movements on ERP's version, its two-tone Reese stab suggesting utter indefatigability when begged for mercy.

Review: Sean Johnston's A Love From Outer Space is a masterclass in mood and restraint. Over two LPs, it captures the ethos of Johnston's club night, favouring steady, low-slung rhythms and cosmic textures over high-energy peaks. The tracks are sequenced with care, creating a meditative flow that rewards deep listening. This is dance music for introspection, where each layer reveals itself slowly, embodying a philosophy that values depth and subtlety.

Review: Sean Johnston curates a compilation that feels as much like a love letter to a bygone era of cosmic and chugging dance music as it does a blueprint for the future. Across this translucent red vinyl double LP, he assembles a narrative that stretches from the dub-tinged grooves of Weatherall-inspired rhythms to rich, enveloping basslines rooted in the darker corners of the dancefloor. These selections capture the ethos of A Love From Outer Spaceinot a style, but a sensibility, where tempo slows and subtlety reigns. Rather than overwhelm, the tracks reveal their power gradually, layering textures and grooves with a painterly touch.

Review: "Don't you know I'm in a band?" Seven words that have never failed to further one's social standing, or so say Confidence Man and Sweely. The artists kick off this new naughty, funky house one from AirFunk with an iconic original, providing ample clues as to which steps to take if one should so desire to climb the ladder of cool. Backed up by equally funky and quietly confident action-funk stingers from Aline Umber, Maxime Db, Brian SNR and Hostom, this is a thoroughly unique V/A, all of whose tracks nail a soaked sweet spot of hip finesse and dreamy depth.

Review: Matt Hodgson's 7th Voyage is one of those mid-90s labels that enjoyed cult status almost from the off. Its releases helped to define the sound of the London underground of the time and have since become pricey and sought after. The Return Voyage is a new seven-track collection of back-catalogue gems that pays tribute to the label's fine work. From the deep and atmospheric 'Big Hips Blue Gloves (No Dubs)' by Tactics Of Bass to the squelchy lo-fi hip-hop funk of The Secret Garden's 'Rough Diamond,' this is a vital look back at a hugely influential label.

Review: Bristol label-turned-blog Innate launches a new sub-label, Innate Editions, which it says is dedicated to timeless UK techno, IDM, electro and ambient music, and it will all come on heavyweight vinyl. The first release revives Connective Zone's Palm Palm, a millennium-era cult classic and Ben UFO favourite that first came out on Mark Broom and Dave Hill's Unexplored Beats in 2001. Now, this long-out-of-print, expensive and hard to find gem has been remastered by Jamie Anderson and so sounds superb with many lavish electronic layers, richly emotive melodies and dynamic drums that lean on UK techno, IDM, and deep electro. Sounds as good now as it ever did.

Review: Aftere their unexpected reformation - apparently after key member Karl O'Connor was persuaded by none other than grunge king Mark Lanegan to end their decade-long hiartus - comes an even less expected new album from the cult Birmingham (or Black Country, to be more precise) techno gods. The album is a tribute to the late Juan Mendez, a key member of Sandwell District who passed away in early 2024. Mendez's unfinished artwork, originally intended for the album cover, serves as a poignant memorial to his contribution to their legacy. It's anything but functional techno, thouhg, with plenty of skittering, sidewinding beats and pared back rather than utterly banging rhythms. See the cinematic techno and dancefloor energy that blends Drexciya's innovative approach for reference, but also Autechre and more esoteric electro across the eight cuts. Plenty of sonic rebellion and meticulously crafted rhythm with a dark energy, not to mention edgy atmopsheres that will leave a lasting mark.

Review: Techno trio and collective Sandwell District are an elusive backdoor force, operating from the shadows, as did, perhaps, the earliest and most adept of assassins in recorded history. Though they may have slunk back into their cave not long after 2013's monumental Fabric 69 mix CD, the group burst back into the headlights, with enough thrust to send an oncoming freight lorry skidding, with the compilation What's Next?. Now something in the way a further, better elucidated answer, and promise of more, is answered with a new LP, which alludes themes of undying and happy irresolution, through thick wads of slamming propulsion and gale-force apneas, blown out and away by the expanded regiment of peers Monic, Regis, Function and Rivet.

Review: Now resident artists on Point Of Departure, the techno collective Sandwell District present their latest blooping contradiction in transparent blue vinyl form. Drawing on the well-defined Birmingham techno idiom that made them, the elusive revolving-door trio also here welcome temporary stopovers from fellow floor functionaries Function, Regis, Monic and Rivet on each track, treading roads 'Less Travelled' with a 'Restless' intent. From the synaptic promo forerunner 'Hidden' to the tartly corrosive 'Citrinitas Acid', an unsurprising variety of new techno hurlers follows 2023's Feed Forward reissue, augmenting the free-partisan's immune system by hooking it up to a kind of patchwork electric lattice. Controlled chaos ensues.

Endless Day (LFT remix)
Review: By now, at least one dimension of the electro genre has turned out so misanthropic that one of its keystone artists has called itself Human Rebellion - as if to suggest humanity is the exception, not the rule. With the artist now debuting on Hilltown Disco after a wonderful eight EPs so far, this one hears the so far faceless bot push themselves to 'Outer Limits' by way of a waspish bluebottle buzz line, then break through the proverbial 'Magnetic Field' to revelatory effect: deep pulse leads and firm kicks, awash in a sense of broken-free elation. 'Endless Day' and 'Exploration' harken the B-side, dystopi-fying the proceedings through a relative industrial feel, implying a robot crackdown on human insurgency. The former has a brilliant breakdown, with a short cyborg monologue opining, railing against guinea pig-style entrapment: "I want to get out if this experiment. Aren't there enough testable subjects...?"

Review: The perfect mix of “cheeky” and “darkside” best describes this latest signing by electroclash figurehead The Hacker to Rekids, emulsifying two oppositely-humoured vibe mixers, like pink and green, horror and comedy. ‘Turborave’ and ‘Harmonia’ stir the pot from different points of view; the former uses pitched-down orchestral stabs, and the latter fires off laser-powered globs against cosmic, final-hurrah synths. The latter track, especially, is commendable for its squelch control, with said lasers firing at a ballistically variable harmonic frequencies in the breakdown; miraculously, all angles are housed in a slinky sonic wire casing, carefully conducted to tempt us to, but ultimately not, blow a fuse.

It is an immersive, emotive sound with lush and ethereal pads and a moody bassline that keeps you locked. Review: This slab of wax serves up three electrifying cuts that will satisfy any electro enthusiast's cravings. With its futuristic, flighty vibe, the title track 'Drive By' immediately grabs attention with its vintage-inspired electro sound. The synths are crisp, and the rhythm is punchy, making it a great nod to classic electro, yet with a modern flair. The first remix by Christian AB, Autopilot mix 1, channels a Kraftwerk-like feel, infusing the track with electro that’s perfect for breakdancing. It’s a highly energetic rework, leaning into the mechanical, hypnotic elements that define the genre. The second remix, Autopilot mix 2, delves deeper into the groove, with a more prominent bassline and intricate rhythm patterns. This version ups the intensity, giving the track a fresh, updated vibe while maintaining the raw energy of its predecessor. With Christian AB and UK electro veterans Transparent Sound at the helm, this 12" delivers a standout set of tracks that balance classic electro with cutting-edge production.

Review: A dynamic fusion of ghetto electro, trance and techno, this record is a fresh spin on familiar sounds. The title track, 'Booty Trance (feat Detroit's Filthiest)', is sure to stand out with crisp production that blends high-energy trance melodies with the raw edge of ghetto electro, creating an electrifying single. 'Another Time' shifts gears, drawing on 90s influences to craft an electro-techno hybrid that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Its futuristic vibe and driving rhythm make it a standout for fans of classic electro with a modern twist. On Side-2, the Rawtakes Refix of 'Booty Trance' strips back the trance elements, leaning deeper into electro with a nod to Cybotron's iconic 'Clear'. The result is a grittier, street-smart version that feels grounded yet innovative. Closing the EP, the remix by Aura T-09 and Wheez-ie transforms the track into a hardcore techno anthem. The stomping beat and reimagined trance melodies elevate the energy, blending celestial tones with raw intensity. This EP is creative within the techno genre with diverse interpretations that will resonate across dancefloors and playlists alike.

The Lyon native opts for melodic sostenuti and flashy textures, with flickering snare-snaps and freewheeling electro house motifs nailing moods of ostentation and fur-lined pomp. Maximised to a crazed, glitching extent, the breakdown on 'Bip Bip' is a refreshing technical detour, recalling glitch-garage peers such as Ardisson in dialogue with sugar-rushing complextro jerks. A journey through live electro, the trio's decade-long mastery in modular synthesis cis coming to a culmination with this EP. On Side-1, the title track 'Holy Mantle' opens with a stunning progression, rooted in vintage analogue textures, evoking a sense of fluidity and experimentation. The track flows seamlessly, radiating an energy that is timeless. 'Walnut' follows with its deep, melodic electro vibes, incorporating atmospheric, rolling basslines and layers of intricate rhythms that draw the listener deeper into the groove. Review: Paris label Positive Future release positive music for positive people, but that doesn’t hold them back a bit from concept-releasing V/As about future dystopias! “Once upon a time in a dystopian future”, so the liners go, “humans are winning the battle against a zombie invasion” by fighting back, somehow, with their vinyl records (it’s not stated explicitly, but we presume this means by playing them). “To defeat them forever and avoid a wicked future, DJs will have to join forces for a big party with every human still left standing.” Of course, before the zombie plague, as far as sonic warfare went, military-grade sound design had been sanctioned for government use only, and the recording industries had precious little involvement. That all changes with producers Aline Brooklyn, Krol, Briki, Samuel Jabba and P.O., each of whom have reproduced and mass marketed their very own subsonic, antiviral weapon, of which there are four classes: A1, A2, B1 and B2. We choose B2, ‘The Night’, an instrument whose unsettling, garbled vocals and spine-tingling melodies make for, in our view, the best sonic zombie-away spray.

Under Your Radar
Review: Following outings on Eudominia and Who is Paula, Carsten Fluck and Lucas Lejeune bring their Not Even Noticed project back to Craigie Knowes. Like their last EP on the reliable Scottish imprint, Beneath The Surface has both eyes firmly fixed on peak-time dancefloors. Our pick of a very strong bunch is opener 'Hidden Ground', where razor-sharp TB-303 acid lines, dreamy chords and misty-eyed female vocal snippets ride a rolling techno groove. The quality level never dips throughout, with the warm but spacey tech-house hypnotism of 'Whopper', the deep acid house hedonism of 'Hibiscus' and the electro-fired supernova that is 'Under Your Radar' (whose acid lines are wonderfully insatiable) all hitting the spot.

Review: Naming his latest tunes 'Target Practice' and 'Improv', Spanish electro producer Kalcagni is determined to flaunt his care-less, unruffled streak, implying that the production of electro floor-haulage is a cakewalk. After all, the best among us eat bangers for breakfast! The A-siders rattle out like inexhaustible mags, as we hunt down bullet-holed cardboard cutouts of mortal enemies, spied in the reticle. It's only until after such an opening bloodbath that we find a moment to catch our breaths and put on a 'Clean Shirt', where rejuvenative acids resound between roomier beat. Finally, 'Drift N Shift' hears Kalcagni pack in his shift at the shooting range and steal away into a misty, chord-laden night, though the sense of urgency is not lost on us.

Review: Menacing EBM and dark synth billows from a Netherlands hinterland; our heralds speak of an esoteric encampment by the name of Espectro Oculto, said to be the remote incantators of an unstoppable curse in sound. Six shadowy emissaries have been sent to spread the pestilence; Trenton Chase, Martial Canterel, DJ Nephil, Exhausted Modern, Fragedis and Happy707. Clearly, the faction have recruited only the best, trusted and yet most nefarious of spies from as far-flung regions as Czechia and Argentina in the administering of such a sordid sonic plague. We’re left most quivery at the centrifugal doom drones of Exhausted Modern’s ‘Fear Of Focus’, across whose breakdown banshees are heard wailing and snarling, and Fragedis’ ‘Landing In Reality’, a lo-fi techno freakout and sonochemical anomaly, channeling militant two-way radio samples and hellish FM synthesis.

Stay At Home Ebi

Review: DJ Gamba and Adrien Calvet join forces on Stay At Home Records for a split EP brimming with contrasting yet complementary energies. Gamba's 'Toi, Mon Reve' opens with a euphoric Italo-house groove, melodic leads and a rhythm that blends techno and house seamlessly, evoking dreamy optimism. 'Soleil' channels a playful new-wave techno vibe, offering a clever, nostalgic twist perfect for sunny escapism. Calvet brings a darker, more introspective touch with 'Trafalgar Square', a hypnotic fusion of 80s synthwave, vaporwave and deep techno grooves. 'Summer of 05' follows, layering vintage textures with a groovy bassline, radiating retro charm. Together, the EP reflects a Yin-Yang dynamic: Gamba's uplifting dreamer meets Calvet's raw and moody edge. This release captures the balance of light and shadow, nostalgia and innovation, making it a versatile, emotionally rich addition to any collection.

Review: Urgent electro from adept producer and DJ Munir Nadir. His third outing for a new favourite label, the Italian outfit Odd One Tape, this sawtooth croaker is an especially squelchy dance record, drawing on tail ends of minimal techno and noughts electro house, and with perhaps a tad of skweee thrown in too. 'Give Me A Second' and 'Paratoxical' use conspicuous reverb tails and flex-gurgled vocals to spoken and spelt-out effect, while the B-side's 'Sniper' is as wilfully minimal and baleful as it gets, working in a monster of a ghostly vocal underbeat. Finally, 'Flying Ladder' rounds off on a matchingly minimal euphorizer in the 4x4 vein.

Review: The 2019, full-length, 11-track album by Years Of Denial is said to have been written and produced in a country house once surrounded only by vast, empty landscapes and an endless sky. Despite the isolation feeding its making, the debut album Suicide Disco is still an inescapable somatic provocation; it's not where you are, but who you are inside. The duo of Jerome Tcherneyan and Barkosina Hanusova now hear their debut album for Veyl reissued here, not long after a second noose in the form of Suicide Disco Vol. 2 was heard strung up a in 2023. Suicide Disco was a comparatively greyscale exercise in delay and decay, the likes of 'The Pain I Meditate' and 'Contradiction' making for manic dust-clouds of post-industrial fallout; sonic , Industrial Revolutory sequelae, topped off by an expressionist vocal narrative from Hanusova.

Review: A masterclass in stark 'Kontrast' comes by way of producer Elektrotechnik, whose latest 12" here for Gladio Operations does unsurprisingly well to contrast his prior digital-only issue for A-Traction Records. Through glommy, paralytic, salivary sound design, 'Sigma' and its corresponding remix by Larionov mission-state the EP: one pronouncedly unafraid of weight or womp, and yet which still scoops out a mercurial feel akin to a volatile solder metal prior, pre and post-solidification. 'Kontrast' and 'Die Bestie' on the B-side sound like said reflowed solder chucked through a giant techno kaleidoscope, as both tracks move increasingly hypnotic and heavy.

Review: On their latest EP for Incoherent Data, producer Valerio Della Notte prove themselves to be not only a slick producer but also a rather amazing vocodist. Setting about exploring the boundary between human emotions and digital tech, 'Silicon Love' sets the stage for a four-track, new beatific bust-up of galactic proportions; unfortunately we can't make out the lyrics, but that more or less doesn't matter, due to the existence of auditory pareidolia; we hear what we want to hear. A2, B1 and B2 are equally as weighty and synthetic glitter-caked, bewitching the ears with power chords and mega-triads of the most excessive and luxuriant variety. Only 'ZXC' dubifies things somewhat, steering more quizzical through glassier square leads, like a cutting room floor fragment from a mid-career New Order studio session.

Review: To go "sniper mode" implies a mixture of precision and force, and doesn't Gregor Sniper know it! Returning to Rawax after a break, this fresh 12:" killshot emerges stealthily from a protrusive barrel, with guest vocals from fellow producer Exzakt aka. Larry McCormick on the lead tune. 'Homecoming' exemplifies creative vocal processing, working snappy rhythms about reverse reverb and harmonic pitch layers. 'The Iron Raven' contrasts with its purgatory purity, opting for cleaner drums and dastard ricochets, set against an inauspicious detuned tone. 'Golan Heights' builds on the same root note to soar above an emergent landscape, while 'Bornheim 34' again concludes things on an ill-bade note, evoking moods of a goblin kingdom turned collective cyborg zombie.

Here he showcases his electro sound across four cuts starting with 'Rhythm Freq', a celestial and disco-tinged sound. 'Movement Feeling' is a party starting cut with old school style and plenty of percussive lushness, then 'Soda Junior' brings louche, low-slung disco funk before 'Bisous' shuts down with more cosmic playfulness and vibrant synth colours.

Review: Ralph Lawson's legendary Leeds-based label 20/20 Vision is in the middle of celebrating 30 years in the game. Part of that now extends to this reissue of a record that played a huge part in establishing the imprint back in the day. It comes from the co-founders' production alias Wolf n Flow and though it was recorded more than 20 years ago, this record still bangs. 'Messin' With My Mind' is a perfect mix of squelchy tech and vocal loveliness that calls to mind early Fresh & Low. The Oliver.r dub is more sleek and blissed out and two Electric Press remixes close out with some late-night heft.

While she opens this hat-trick of tracks with a rather functional, FM-driven drama, 'Hope', it's really the Diego Santana featurer 'Murderbot Diaries' that gets us going; the track breaks down into a supremely lasery, tubular, harmonically next-level strobing, conjuring alt-visions of a seedy but gaudy cyborg entertainment district. B-sider 'Once' Tron-ifies things with sweeping sines and popcorn leads, whilst 'Only We Know' utilises transitory crash cymbals and further slinky melodies, constructing a closing tech-funk number.

Review: As with all the releasing artists on the London label unknown-untitled, we're not to know the identities of those behind this one. In a crunched out techno-garage-speed statement in six parts, we can safely say that whomever hooded figure(s) has procured these mega meanderers on 12" vinyl (and in so doing topping up the eleventh edition in their equally nameless series) is a real talent. In characteristically mysterious fashion, the release is digitally liner-notated by an all-caps persona of label boss Kane Dansie, whose intent is clearly rather guileful: "SIX VERY VERY BIG ONES. IS IT SIX ARTISTS? THREE? OR JUST ONE?" We're to suppress the compulsion to get hung up on questions like these, despite the tantalism: instead, we'll comment on the sheer darkside insanities of 'Track 3', 'Track 4', 'Track 5' and 'Track 6' especially, marking an upwards trend through such spinoff styles as UK hardcore, grime and snareless dubstep. It just gets better and better.

Angling big hauls of raw and raunchy, yet still ethereal dance builds, the DJ and producer flexes both vocal and production chops here. 'Walking' is a duly strange track, with wordless vocals gliding across cutting FM syntheses, whilst 'Lagoon' sounds to reflux a so far unidentifiable form of alien sonic bile. 'Go To Sleep' brings back the energy with a wackier, one-shot-voxxing turn, while closer 'Bang' hears the EP save its full-bodied heaviness for last, being the track with the least sensitivity and most bulk, as a commandeering voice booms over the tannoy.
