Cat: FMB 005. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Bicep & Hammer - "Dahlia" (7:51)
  2. Bicep - "Rays" (6:00)
  3. Bicep - "Seagulls" (5:43)
Review: Northern Irish duo Bicep has built their production career on blending, repackaging and reimagining classic house influences. It's little surprise, then, to find that this latest 12" does the same. Hammer collaboration "Dahlia" sets the tone, combining the bold pianos of vintage Italian house with the kind of dreamy pads and snappy drum machine rhythms that recall the Halcyon days of late '80s/early '80s Balearic house. There's more of a sweaty warehouse feel about "Rays" - all yelping female vocal cuts, booming garage bass and skipping beats - while "Seagulls" sits somewhere between the two tracks, offering both bottom-end bump and eyes-closed sweetness.

Lovelee Dae (heavyweight vinyl 12" repress)
Cat: FMB 006. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Lovelee Dae (Bicep remix) (7:03)
  2. Lovelee Dae (Bicep dub) (7:05)
Review: Given their well discussed love of vintage U.S house and garage, it's little surprise to see Bicep taking on the potentially tricky task of remixing Blaze's 1996 New Jersey classic, "Lovelee Dae". Wisely, the Belfast boys have retained many of the original's sumptuous elements -sweeping strings, rich chords and summery vocal included - and expertly fused them with carnival-friendly drums and a deliciously tactile, Italian house style bassline. The fine vocal mix is accompanied by a similarly impressive Dub, where the duo makes merry with floating, delay-heavy vocal snippets, filters, and their own dense, party-rocking rhythm.

  1. Dynadisco
  2. Party Jam
  3. Party Jam (Whatever/Whatever remix)
Review: The next release on Brazil's ever-promising disco steamer Gop Tun comes from Renato Cohen. Cohen has been an infrequent mainstay of Brazilian dance music for a long time now, most recently appearing on Kling Klong, Tronic and 100% Pure. His releases may not come around every day, but he makes them count when they do. "Dynadisco" is a spaced out slow burner with a looped up groove and simmering pads building towards a powerful, funk-fuelled bass drop. "Party Jam" takes a lighter approach, keeping the samples sprightly and even sprinkling a little acid magic into the tune. It gives Whatever/Whatever plenty to be working on their remix, which spreads across the B side in a fit of electro-disco finery.

18A (limited 140 gram vinyl hand-stamped 12")
Cat: FXWL 18A. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Subtleties
  2. Synergi
  3. Splash
Review: Having turned heads with Shedbug and Laroze already, Flux expands its modest operations to include a new White sublabel that kicks off in fine style with D B. "Subtleties" is a gorgeous minimal house jam shaped out by snaking rhythms and amorphous ambient tones - the consummate spirit animal for your dancefloor trip-out needs. "Synergi" has a more typical shuffle, but it's no slouch in the head-melting psychedelic tone department. "Splash" completes the package with a swerve into more explicitly broken beat territory, using a similar sound palette but placing the emphasis on tricky programming to create a divine slice of electronica for the more rhythmically adventurous heads out there.

  1. No More Drama (5:36)
  2. Herbalife (5:54)
  3. Air (5:39)
  4. Don't Touch The Ground (5:34)
Review: Paraiso's latest rock solid missive comes from the artist formerly known as Photonz, a Portuguese scene stalwart now operating under the amusing alias DJ Senior Vasquez. Turn your attention first to the slightly foreboding, retro-futurist riffs, buzzing electronics and bustling beats of "No More Drama", before treating your ears to the spooky lead lines, jacking beats and raw bass of "Herbalife". Flip to the B-side for "Air", where looped, ear catching riffs and echoing chords ride a cymbal-groove, and the squeezable, Balearic house brilliance of piano-boasting closer "Don't Touch The Ground". That, too, boasts an absolutely killer bassline.

  3. DYCX 5 (6:35)
Review: Not content with releasing Appleblim's debut album this month, Sneaker Social Club stoke the fires with this highly anticipated sophomore EP. Once again, it casts a wide net across the house/axis with all corners chartered: "Influence" hits with a warm synth insistency you might imagine Lil Louis heralding in a Chicago warehouse 30 years ago. "Afters" is a classic strutter with a sultry piano-tickled swing while "DYCX 5" slaps with a relenting jack and spiralling arpeggios laced with pure positivity. On point.

  4. The Juno Experience (5:46)
Review: Sleazy McQueen's Lovedancing is back with Colombia's Felipe Gordon who has appeared previously on top labels such as Quintessentials, Toy Tonics and S3A. Seriously lo-slung disco deviance awaits you on The Glory EP: from the looped-up and dusted down title track and the smooth, Rhodes-led deepness of "Nebiancater". On the flip, get into the groove in slo-mo style on the irresistible "Mara" until he saves the best for last on "The Juno Experience" - mind you, we could be biased. No, seriously: this neon-lit, boogie-down jam for the late night sounds like a familiar classic (as we're sure you'll agree) and is bound to get bums wiggling on the dancefloor guaranteed.

  5. Broken VHS (radio edit) (4:48)
Review: Fresh from fine recent outings on Lovedancing and Quintessentials, rising star Felipe Gordon releases his first EP on Toy Tonics, a label he's been loosely affiliated with since contributing a track to a compilation style EP last year. The centrepiece of the 12" is clearly "Acid Party at Tuesaquillo", a cut that cleverly combines classic deep house elements (woozy chords, spine-tingling pianos) with the jacking rhythms and mind-altering acid lines of early Chicago house. While the track arguably didn't need remixing, we're rather enjoying the deeper, jazzier interpretation from Retrogott and DJ Qualle, not to mention the enveloping warmth of Seb Wildblood's Detroit Techno-meets-deep house rework.

  1. Spiritual Path (7:19)
  2. Mediate (7:15)
  3. The Other Man (6:07)
  4. Capital Road (7:24)
Review: American lo-fi house champion Grant is back with the fourth edition of his eponymous imprint. There's a familiar anthemic loop accompanying the moody acid groove of "Spiritual Path". The beats get broken up next, but the track is still in spiritually emotive fashion on the lush "Mediate" while the flipside features more soulful and reflective moments for late night dancefloors. In particular, the sensual "The Other Man" or the ultra deep and dub inflected mood lighting of "Capital Road" somewhat reminiscent of his tremendous work on last year's No Lights EP for Lobster Theremin - one of last year's favourites! Following up his brilliant Perception LP last year on Duke's Distribution, Grant retains his winning streak.

Review: Hardway Bros is Sean Johnston - DJ, producer and one half of A Love from Outer Space with Andrew Weatherall. He's fast become a staple of James 'Fucking' Friedman's Throne Of Blood imprint with his modern take on classic house music formulas. If it 'aint broke, dont fix it we say - Johnston's winning formula is on show once again with the heads-down acid wiggle of "Friedman Deeback Loop Revision" followed by the metal dance of "The Laser" closing out the A side in neon-lit, electro fashion. On the flip, Maxime Pasquier (Sheik 'N' Beik/Kill The DJ) delivers a bleepu nu-disco rendition of the A side cut and final offering while "Afro Sirene" goes for a trippy and lo-slung Afro vibe.

  1. Kayla Dream
  2. Distant Voyage
  3. Open Up Your Eyes
Review: Gene Hunt is one of the few producers from the original wave of Trax Records signees that still flies the flag for Chicago house with as much gusto as when he started. This is his second trip out on Inner Shift Music, and it finds the US house veteran on impeccable form. "Kayla Dream" is a light, airy jacker defined by amorphous synth washes that match the mellow mood of the label. "Distant Voyage" is a truly standout track though, dealing in crooked rhythmic structures and channelling the techno side of Hunt's muse. "Open Up Your Eyes" maintains the introspective mood, but this time welcomes some soulful vocal turns into the adventurous, machine-powered landscape.

Review: Taken from last year's maxi EP under his off-piste Oeil Cube guise, I Cube's supersized "XXXX" gets the treatment from Red Light Records' Abel on this special 45". Taking its already smouldering slow-n-low vibe and giving it even more a hypnotic deep plunge, it's a respectful twist that loses none of the original's Balearic charm. Flip for "Etire En Avant" an immaculate slice of previously unreleased loopy magic that was recorded straight to tape in 96 but still sounds like it's 2096. Cool as ever.

Review: It's been nearly three years since the last instalment in Running Back's occasional series of DJ-friendly drum tools. Following solo percussion 12s from Todd Osborn and Redshape, up-and-coming producer Ketiov steps up to the plate. His drum tracks are predictably dense and percussively layered, with clattering, pots and pans hits wrapping themselves around dense, off-kilter kick-drum patters and, in the case of opener "Rhythm#1", restless cowbells. In some ways, it's reminiscent of Max D's work under the Dolo Percussion alias, though Ketiov's cuts do include a few more subtle musical elements - the odd acid line here, a squelchy bassline there - not to mention a swathe of slamming, peak-time friendly tools.

Review: With previous releases on top labels such as Roots For Bloom and Rutilance Recordings, Brittany based duo Gojah & Kasmin aka Mara Lakour deliver another dose of sexy late night deepness here for Nrmndy - which follows up an excellent inaugural release by Ka One & St-sene. "Inhale" kicks off the EP in fine fashion on this emotive, swing-fuelled groove for the early hours, while the trippy bump and shuffle of "Solar" follows in suit - and it receives a tremendous rework on the flip. Havantepe's remix sees the rising Turkish producer deliver a evocative excursion through analogue soul in the vein of Cab Drivers or DJ Honesty, while the sleazy bounce of "Mirrors" will hypnotise you into submission with its swirling pads, sexy vocals and firm rhythms.

  4. You Better Give Up
Review: Laroze is flying the flag for US inspired house music in France, wearing influences from Nu Groove to Mahogani Music on his sleeve and delivering that classic strain of deep house that never dulls with time. "Bring It Down" is a soul-stirring boost of energy fuelled on the hedonism of optimism of vintage 90s house, from the chords to the vocal hook. "Port De La Lune" does a damn fine job of looping up some feel-good disco licks, and "You Better Give Up" shows a different side to Laroze that feels as indebted to R&B and downtempo as house music. Kosme comes on board to do a remix of the track that reframes it as a rolling breakbeat number.

Totally Dubs (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PPC 09. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Feel The Rhythm
  2. Come On
  3. Music
Review: Plastik People is, as ever, your most trusted source of funking, bumping garage house. This time they've unearthed a real treat in the shape of Danny J Lewis, a secret weapon of the UK garage scene who flirted with success in the mid to late 90s, reaching the heights of Locked On and XL. Reportedly the tracks on this 12" were originally released on a supremely rare double pack, and now they've been mastered and repressed for die hard heads to sink their teeth into. "Feel The Rhythm" has a dash of darkside rave drama tipped into its sauce, but it's still an utterly funky swinger with all the hallmarks of the 90s. "Come On" is a boisterous party starter, and "Music" takes things in more of a deep house direction.

Cat: MOBLU 004. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
  3. Track 3
Review: It's the fourth go round for Monsieur Blue, who steps back up to the plate with another three surefire jams from the slinkier side of the minimal house spectrum. "Track 1" is an exquisite trip through blue-hued keys and shuffling drums, striking a fine balance between the lounge and the dancefloor. "Track 2" takes a moodier approach, eking out mysterious chords and injecting a little juice into the low end to suit a more rugged situation, and then "Track 3" jettisons the ballast and pings off into a dubbed out sphere of house music perfectly crafted for the times you want to get lost at sea.

  1. Everything U Know

Review: After launching last year with Who, Get Your Copy returns to the fray with a little help from Italian powerhouse Steve Murphy. The producer gets plenty of action on labels like Hot Haus, Chiwax, Lobster Theremin and more besides, so you know you're going to get a solid dose of tuff house business delivered with that gutsy Roman attitude. "Everything U Know" channels an abundance of 90s vibes, from the nagging chord stab to the understated speech sample, while "Infiltrator" takes a tribal direction without losing the old-skool flavour. Both cuts are perfectly shaped for the dance, whether you want to hit a peak time note or take the crowd deep into the groove.

Review: Detroit bad man OB IGNITT returns to our charts with a two-tracker for his own OBONIT imprint, and the producer is joined by fellow Detroit producer Brian Kage - a man who has been churning out badness on the low-key since about 2004, and who has already appeared alongside Omar-S on FXHE. The newly formed duo kick off with "On The Run", a light and bumpy house attack with plenty of samples, blazing melodies, and an altogether 'upper tone' approach. On the flip, Ignitt comes through solo with "All We Do", a piano-led house charmer with a hefty level of kicks and bass, Detroit styleee!

Review: SVN and Philip Gelberg's tracks under the PG Sounds moniker have been among our very favourites out of the ever-impressive SUED catalogue. The imprint, led by Sven (SVN) Reiger himself, has never veered away from their core sound and aesthetics; an analogue approach enwraps a particularly glitchy, improvisational, dubwise sound that has a particular tendency of sounding different upon each new listen. Their latest collaboration in the studio marks the imprint's 20th release to date, with "Track 1" showcasing their itchy sound across an endlessly pleasing acid palette. On the flip, we have a muted continuation of the previous 303 sounds with "Track 2", swamped and dubbed-out for maximum impact, followed by the more ethereal, more tropical mannerisms of "Track 3" - a SUED classic! Recommended.

  1. Thinking About You
  2. Thinking About You (Lauer remix)
  3. Thinking About You (Fort Romeau remix)
Review: Pushing Movies is a collaborative project from Jeffrey Sire and Dimitri SoEmotional that celebrates the vintage tones of Italo disco, synth pop and all things slick and 80s. "Thinking About You" does indeed sound like it could have been made 30 years ago - from the slap bass to the reverse drum fills, plastic FM synth lines and overall aspirational tone, it's the consummate extended 12" mix track. Lauer takes the original and smacks it up sharp with some tougher drums and a greater sense of urgency, and then Fort Romeau takes a subtle approach that keeps much of the original spirit of the track intact while honing the edges for maximum club play and using some cosmic synth flourishes to devastating effect.
