Deep Burnt Edits (12" repress)
Cat: ATA 1972. Rel: 19 Feb 18
  1. Surprise! (10:57)
  2. The Surprise Is That There Is No Surprise! (10:37)
Review: While he's gone on to produce some of the most wild, eccentric and inspired deep house of the last decade, Julien 'Pepe Bradock' Auger will always be remembered for his 1999 classic, "Deep Burnt". The epic track remains a staple in many deep house DJs' sets some 16 years after its initial release, and original copies demand a high price in second-hand stores. Here, he's relented to the pressure and re-released it. While the release is called Deep Burnt Edits, the cheeky Frenchman appears not to have done anything at all to the original (the flipside title of "The Surprise Is There Is No Surprise" being something of a giveaway). Regardless, it should be an essential purchase for those who don't own the original, with its heart-aching string samples, rolling chords and tactile electronics.

  1. Bunny Hoppin (4:19)
  2. Flush (6:55)
  3. The Truth (5:26)
  4. Tipsy (3:14)
Review: Chicago Damn is the latest esteemed producer to shore up at Marcel Vogel's Intimate Friends label, following the Hypoleon EP with some forthright, sample heavy funk house concoctions that nod to his other work on Wolf Music and the like. "Bunny Hoppin" is a rowdy but soulful belter with a peppy tempo and an addictive line in looped up samples, while "Flush" takes things slower and dustier without getting too lost in the undergrowth. "The Truth" lays its samples out in bold, bright brushstrokes with a pattering, psyched out undercurrent for deeper, sunkissed moments, and then "Tipsy" finishes the EP off in a playful tryst of re-pitched piano trills and scuffed beats.

Movin' Smoke EP (transparent blue vinyl 12" repress)
Cat: RNTR 019. Rel: 19 Feb 18
  1. Movin Smoke (6:30)
  2. Infinity I & II (5:33)
  3. Make Love (6:30)
  4. Magic City (5:51)
Review: On the two releases we've heard to date, Cody Currie has barely put a foot wrong, delivering a string of tracks that brilliantly join the dots between dusty, soul-flecked U.S deep house and hip-hop style sample-based beat jams. For this outing on Razor 'n' Tape Reserve, he applies the same approach to the world of disco and boogie. So, we get the rolling, sun-kissed warmth and gentle filter tweakery of wide-eyed disco house shuffler "Movin' Smoke", the slack-tuned jazz snares, swirling chords and bubbly synthesizer samples of "Infinity I & II" and the swirling, string-drenched orchestral disco-house bounce of "Magic City". Arguably best of all, though, is the more driving "Make Love", where Currie's ability to select and manipulate samples within a bumping deep house framework is best exemplified.

Serpent Strut (12" limited to 350 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: C56 063. Rel: 19 Feb 18
  1. Jack Cutter - "Serpent Strut" (feat David Harks - Larry Heard Fingers deep club mix) (8:16)
  2. Paqua - "Ruby Running Faker" (Emperor Machine extended dub) (10:56)
Review: Claremont 56's 10th anniversary celebrations continue via this tasty 12". It contains two alternate, previously unheard versions of remixes that originally appeared on the label's celebratory box set earlier in the year. Chicago deep house legend Larry Heard is at the controls on the A-side, delivering a deep, dubby, spacey and musically rich "Fingers Deep Club Mix" of Jack Cutter and David Harks' Balearic shuffler "Serpent Strut". While naturally superb, it's the flipside Emperor Machine dub of Paqua's "Ruby Running Faker" that's really got us in a spin. Clocking in at well over ten-minutes and blessed with one of the strongest synth basslines you're ever likely to hear, the Stafford producer brilliantly plays around with delay-laden piano and vocal snippets throughout.

  4. Bound By Faith (instrumental mix) (6:52)
Review: Scott Fraser and Richard Sen launch a new project Hackney Vandal Patrol with this 12", tapping into their love of steamy US deep house from the early 90s. The mood is electric on "Bound By Faith", using a meandering vocal sample and organ keys over smoky jack beats and a throbbing bassline, while the "Bass Hit Mix" brings that pulsing low end to the front of the mix and strips everything but the beat back. The "Redemption Dub" strikes something of a balance between the two previous mixes, and then the "Instrumental" cuts the vocal but keeps the sweet and saucy organ line, so whichever bit of the track you like there's a mix for you.

  1. Confusion Of Sound (7:49)
  2. The Flow (9:59)
  3. Finality (7:57)
  4. Kosmos 1680 (7:14)
Review: Liam B and Yanis KDJ's Piff Records imprint has never been prolific, with the deep house duo rightly focusing on quality rather than quantity. It's a refreshing approach that's so far delivered two tasty 12" singles in as many years. Here the duo welcomes Cardiff-based studio buff Harrison BDP to the label for the first time. The vibe is dreamy, spacey and ultra-deep, but also formidably floor-friendly. We're particularly enjoying the liquid synths, grandiose Motor City chords and on-point rhythmic shuffle of "Finality", where high register acid lines gently bubble to the surface, and the warm, locked-in dancefloor hypnotism of peak-time roller "Confusion of Sound". That said, both "The Flow" and the more energetic "Kosmos 1680" are equally impressive.

Disco De Los Muertos EP (yellow vinyl 12" repress)
Cat: WD 54. Rel: 19 Feb 18
  1. The Chuco (6:28)
  2. Catch Me (6:26)
  3. Playing A Groove For An Hour (6:43)
  4. The Camel (6:57)
Review: Having made his name with a string of fine rework releases on the acclaimed Tugboat Edits imprint, Guillermo "Hotmood" Gonzalez makes his first appearance on Whiskey Disco. Disco De Los Muertos ("Disco of the dead", if our Spanish is up to scratch) is predictably full of cheeky dancefloor moments that should appeal to both house and disco DJs alike. Our pick of the bunch is probably the low-slung "Playing The Groove For An Hour", where fizzing synth stabs ride a ridiculously rubbery slap bass riff and rolling house groove. That said, the deeper and dreamier "The Camel" is rather good, while the horror-tinged Mexican funk-goes-house fare stretched across the A-side is both rock solid and highly playable.

  3. Air (7:57)
  4. Air (Ben Buitendijk remix) (6:16)
Review: Mickael Jeanneret is Janeret, a deep house producer from Paris who now finds himself with a release on promising new Russian label Berg Audio who have previously served up the likes of iO (Mulen) and Andre Kronert. For the Kord EP, the title track is a densely layered yet sublime and rolling journey through the dub techno sound and executed tastefully. Its remix by Berlin tech house hero Diego Krause respectfully retains the dubbiness yet injects it with more groove and swagger. On the flip, "Air" ventures down a much deeper route with emotive pads and hypnotic dub chords working to great effect. The Dilated Pupils affiliated Ben Buitendijk delivers a brilliant rework, covering the track in the right amount of dust and rust like he only can.

  1. Way Back (4:56)
  2. Zodiac (5:44)
  3. House Joint (5:08)
  4. Boom House (5:47)
Review: Congratulations to Brian "Javonntte" Garrett, who this year celebrates two decades releasing mind-expanding deep house gold. His first 12" of 2018 sees him pop up on People Of Earth, a label that has previously delivered EPs from such scene stalwarts as Rick Wade, Patrice Scott and Kai Alce. Fittingly, Garrett is in a nostalgic mood on opener "Way Back", where his deep, dreamy and soul-flecked deep house groove is accompanied by a spoken word vocal reminiscing about the mid 1990s. Elsewhere, "Zodiac" wraps starbust motifs around a chunky, bass-heavy groove, "House Joint" is a bumpin' box jam rich in sturdy drum machine hits and swirling chords, and "Boom House" is a slightly tougher workout that boasts beats worthy of Derrick Carter or DJ Sneak.

  1. Generations Of Love (Jazz mix) (6:11)
  2. Generations Of Love (Ambient mix) (5:58)
Review: A stunning rewind to 1990 for a well-deserved excavation of Boy George and Simon Rogers' "Generations Of Love" under their Jesus Loves You project. Subject to a dizzying array of remixes at the time of its 1990 release, these versions by Better Days NYC legend Bruce Forest were over-looked. Until now. Evergreen bliss in both jazz and ambient forms, with attention and respect paid to the lavish elements (especially Andy Whitmore's incredible piano solo), it's criminal these mixes never got the justice they deserved. Timeless disco gems with more than a touch of Balearic charm, these have matured impeccably and will still sound incredible in another 28 years time.

  3. K II S (7:28)
Review: R2 Records has done the world - or at least cash-strapped DJs - a favour by reissuing the Power EP, which is arguably Karizma's most sought-after single. Copies of the original 1999 Black Market Records release have been changing hands for eye-watering sums of late, primarily because the tracks are so good that few are willing to part with their 12". The EP was co-produced by Karizma's old pal DJ Spen, and his distinctively swinging, Basement Boys drums can be heard on both "The Sea" and sublime A-side "The Power", which contains some of the most emotive piano solos ever committed to a house record. Also worth a listen is "K II S", which sounds like Karizma's take on the early broken beat/deep house fusions of Black Science Orchestra.

  7. Frankie Knuckles - "It's A Cold World" (feat Jamie Principle) (5:43)
Review: As the four-year anniversary of Frankie Knuckles' death approaches, Trax has decided to reissue Ultimate Production, a re-titled collection of some of his finest Chicago-era moments that first appeared (with a slightly different track list) in 1991. All of the Godfather of House's early must-have cuts are present - think "Your Love", "Baby Wants To Ride", "It's a Cold World" and "Waiting on an Angel" - alongside a smattering of lesser-celebrated gems and his essential remixes of Dancer's "Boom Boom" and Kevin Irving's "Children of the Night". Crucially, this time round they've decided to stretch the tracks across two slabs of wax rather than one, allowing for louder re-mastered cuts.

  2. Gavri & McQueen - "Dead Sea" (8:09)
  3. Longhair - "Coco Loco" (7:32)
  4. Janis - "Floating" (7:04)
Review: German imprint House is OK built its reputation on a series of compilation style EPs called We Make Music. Five years after the final volume dropped, they've decided to revisit the concept by launching a new series, Gemist. Fittingly, heavy hitting Swede Kornel Kovacs kicks off Part 1, serving up an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink peak-time floor-filler seemingly inspired by the cut-and-paste, sample-laden house hits with which M/A/R/R/S and S-Express made their name. Jean-Paul Gavri and Sleazy McQueen do a good job combining choppy house beats, disco samples and wild synth solos on "Dead Sea", while Longhair's "Coco Loco" is an attractive, retro-futurist box jam. If you fancy something a little raw and rough-round-the-edges, Janis's excellent "Floating" is well worth a listen.

  3. Dub Vandalo (5:41)
Review: The Purism label has already worked plenty with Enrico Mantini, but this time he's brought a friend along to help represent the Bologna-based team. Flavio Vecchi sounds right at home co-steering "Try To Get Out Of This", a devastatingly simple and deadly deep cut for heavy lidded house heads to get lost in the smoke machine to. Whether early in the evening or very very late, this is a big tune. "What U Do To Me" finds Nudge opening up the B side with a dreamy breakbeat house flavour for the after party crowd, and then "Dub Vandalo" maintains the stripped back but utterly punchy approach that makes this whole record so damn effective.

  1. Feel This (5:19)

Review: Melchior Sultana has not been short of labels to release on over the past few years, from deepArtSounds and Three Fingers Musique to Minuendo and 12Records, but here he can be found inaugurating the Profound Sound label with some of his trademark deep house tones. "Feel This" is a shimmering, nocturnal groover with mystery to match its subtle funkiness, while the live edit of "Give It To The Moon" has an easier vibe about it with its lingering, warm pads and breezy swing. "Treasures" shakes things up with a jazz funk twist, letting effervescent instrumentation flirt around the crooked house beat with stunning results and then the slow, sensual original version of "Give It To The Moon" cradles the remaining run time of the EP in a downtempo haze of easy beats and stirring vocals.

Review: New York-based Evan Michael has been spotted on some respectable labels in the past, from Drumpoet Community to AirDrop, most recently appearing alongside Marco Passarani on a split 12" for Cin Cin. He makes his first appearance on the ever-prolific Hudd Trax with this diverse grip of deep house jams, leading in with the emotive tones of "Duende". "PCH Passing" is a fluttering affair laden with sweet natured synths, but it also knows when to rain the cascading melodies in to let the groove take the lead. "Machine Pepper" builds up around an on-point bassline and powerful brass stabs, and then "Rainmaker" finishes the EP off with some tricksy delay use and a crooked beat.

Complete with the essential emotive Martin Luther King-adorned sermon, Chuck D's house-proud Jack narrative and Robert Owens deep yearning croons, this is the ultimate collection of versions that rise above the millions of copies and bootlegs and blatant rip-offs this track has endured over the years. 1. Games That We Play (feat Diviniti) (8:55)
  2. Potawatomi (6:46)
Review: Any new material on FXHE has us in a frenzy! 2018 looks like a good start for the Detroit label, with boss man Omar S bringing the jams in style. 'Your Socially Awkward' features two fine servings of modern, Motor City techno-soul. There's the evocative A side cut "Games That We Play", a life affirming journey awash in uplifting pianos plus uplifting arpeggio sequences above its steely shuffle - and all supported by local heroine Diviniti's powerful vocals. On the flip, the deep groove of "Potawatomi" takes things down a notch or two, but this late night number still has a heap of bounce and emotion to it still. This follows up the late 2017 release 'Tap Dat Ass' and the debut album from local veteran Norm Talley.

  2. All Is Love (4:16)
  3. Creepy Crawlers 2 (5:15)
Review: You wait ages for a new Marcellus Pittman 12", and two come along at once. Can't Forget About You is the Detroit deep house producer's second EP in as many weeks following a near three-year hiatus. While the other 12", Revenge For Nothing, was raw, analogue-rich and abrasive, the three tracks here are altogether deeper, woozier and smoother. He begins with the simmering, ultra-deep beatdown vibes pf sensual lead cut "Can't Forget About You", before brilliantly breaking up the beats on "All Is Love", which also sees him make great use of some fluid and jazzy piano samples. Finally, Pittman opts for a more clandestine, late night vibe of the horror-influenced early morning hypnotism of "Creepy Crawlers".

Review: We're all about new artists coming through on their own imprints, so Ludwig A.F. Rohrscheid's debut, the glorious Velocity, is very much welcome on our charts. The title tune itself is a brilliant bric-a-brac blend of broken d&b in the same tone as PLO man, and of LTJ Bukem before him, which makes for a fine addition to any dance set; "Xenon" closes the A-side with a bouncy, full-bodied house bass driven and charged by a rusty analogue beat with a sublime swing. "Helium" is more of a hands-down dancefloor attacker, looping constantly to the sounds of a distant flute, and "Exoplanet" plays with a similar swarm of sounds, twisting and lopping them endlessly amid a void of beats. Nice touch.

Review: Liverpool based NuNorthern Soul return with a split EP featuring two rising stars in deep house - Croatia's Ilija Rudman and British vocalist/songwriter Andre Espeut - who has been involved within the soul/funk/boogie/disco and house scenes for many years. The EP kicks off in exciting fashion with New York City legend Ron Trent's mix of "Tears To Sound" - injecting that soulful, spiritual and life affirming vibe into the track like he always does! On the flip, Rudman flies solo with a couple of dusty late night mood lighting cuts: the deeply emotive groove of "Distant Feelings" and the lo-slung disco swagger of "Deep Sensation" once again showing off a wide variety in the young producer's repertoire, which has earned him releases on top labels recently such as Ism, Is It Balearic? and his own Imogen Records.

  3. Intellect's Intuitive Waste (6:15)
  4. Limited Trance (4:14)
Review: Love Notes turns its affections towards the Windy City with this exemplary 12" from Chicago producer Shmoo, who is no slouch in the energy department when rolling out the pumped up deep house delights of "Sidehacker". "Intellect's Intuitive Waste" is no slouch either, taking a brighter sunshine approach compared to "Sidehacker"s nocturnal veneer, and "Limited Trance" keeps the jack up while letting the additional tones and textures take things deeper. Garrett David gets busy with "Intellect's Intuitive Waste", creating a crafty remix steeped in intriguing percussion without losing that housey focus that defines the Love Notes approach.

  2. Back Home (original Hip House instrumental mix) (7:17)

  4. Back Home (bonus beats) (4:28)
Review: A pioneer for the hip house scene in Chicago back in the 80s, Tyree is still at it thirty years later and sounding as vital as ever. This collaboration with Pure God is a thoroughly different concern to the jacking acid of the early days, bringing a live drum sound, funk bass and even a stirring string lilt into the mix on "Back Home". Whether you plump for the full vocal mix or the stripped back instrumental, it's an anthemic party starting beast of a jam for peak time maneuvers. The "Alternative Mix" of "Back Home" on the B-side is a more classic, throbbing slice of mechanical minimalism for the traditional Chicago jackers out there, and there's some "Bonus Beats" thrown in for good measure too!
