Review: Yet more evidence of just how unfair the American-British dominance of popular music is, Asylum Party should be fondly and widely remembered for their input and influence on the post punk-proto goth years of the mid-1980s. For many people, though, this collection of rare demos and compilation tracks will be their first encounter with the troupe.

Prepare to fall in love - or fall in love again, if this isn't the first time. Some Grey Mornings reflects just how innovative and intensely likeable, in a bleak kind of way, the group were. At times nodding to first-language-English titans like The Cure, in other moments giving them a run for their money in terms of pushing this sub-genre forward, or maybe guiding it to the left with these highly experimental, daring, neo-classical meditations like the staggeringly beautiful heart breaker 'Wet Button'.

Review: Ben Edwards, better known by his pseudonym Benge, is famed for his grasp of authentic vintage synth technology, called in to produce John Grant aming many others as well as Wrangler and Creep Show. He's been exploring the sonic possibilities of electronic instruments since he was a young boy, in the 1970s, and The View From Vega, his debut solo album on the DiN imprint, is primarily an ambient suite of tracks inspired by the space-music typically produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It uses a selection of vintage synthesisers, sequencers and FX units to provide a fertile sonic landscape to explore. The idea was to use simple sequences (using both analogue and digital units), sustained synthesiser pads and electronic piano improvisations, alongside various ancient delay, flange and reverb units. The beautiful, warm quality of the tones that exude from such instruments are very evident on the six tracks that slowly unfold their oscillations in organic, melodic soundscapes.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corners of outer sleeve, product unopened & in excellent condition***

Given that it's been eight years since the last Boards of Canada album, Tomorrow's Harvest should, by rights, push Daft Punk's Random Access Memories in the hype stakes. Certainly, it's a fine set. During their sabbatical, Marcus Eoin and Michael Sandison have lost none of their power to amaze and impress. Chords drone, samples hiss, synths shimmer and beats swing. There are intense ambient moments and intoxicating, post-IDM dreamscapes. It is in turns icy, warm, introspective and blindingly picturesque. Throughout, Tomorrow's Harvest is impeccably atmospheric, conjuring images of windswept Scottish moors, becalmed Cornish bays and maudlin pagan ceremonies. As comeback records go, it's pretty darn good.

Review: Baby is the brand new album from Cosmetics, the Vancouver-based synth wave duo that formed in 2008 but have been rather quiet on the release front in recent times. having teased their return with a superb new pair of singles on 7" recently, now Cititrax/Minimal Wave finally unveil the full album in all its glory. This pair, which is made up of Nic Emm and Aja Emma, fuses artfully crafted synth and wave sounds into something new. It is dark but beautiful, with icy moods and grooves overlaid with the stunning vocals of Emma cutting through in their own alluring manner. The album comes on limited edition clear vinyl and marks a welcome return for this talented outfit.

Review: Cititrax/Minimal Wave come together to put out this new release from the Vancouver-based synth wave duo Cosmetics, which was originally formed by Nic Emm and Aja Emma in 2008. They have been quiet over recent years but recently got back together with a new full-length called Baby that's due soon. The lead singles from it now arrive on this 7" and are full of sultry minimal sounds, moody synth craft and seductive vocals from Emma that really cut through as the clavier a dark, film-like narrative that is beautifully beguiling. A great return ahead of the much anticipated full length.

Review: Cybotron are best known as the early purveyors of electro as we know it, responsible for the genre's more mechanised incarnations from as early as the mid-1980s. Now, though, they "re-emerge in our contemporary cybercultural age when artifactual futures begin a transition into a new era of "Meta'", with two new tracks on Tresor, 'Maintain' and 'The Golden Ratio'. While this sentence might take some decoding, we're fain to speculate that it has something to do with the current mass-mediated zeitgeist centring on virtual reality and its implications for metaphysics, both of which right up Cybotron's street as concepts go. Something about the perturbed spirit of 2023 has awoken Juan Atkins and Laurens von Oswald from their decades-long slumber to produce this vocoded, deep-waving, technocult opus. We must figure out what!

REPRESS ALERT!: Decada 2's musical and visual playfulness trailblazed the electronic scene in Mexico in the mid-80s. The project channels Mateo Lafontaine's luminous mind and otherworldly persona into an audible experience. The Mexican producer is a sonic alchemist, exploring and combining a multitude of electronic genres. The result - Mateo's interpretation of the club music zeitgeist.
2020 marked not only 35 years of Decada 2 but also the sudden passing of Mateo.
Philoxenia is proud to present Decada 2's first vinyl release, a testimony to the legacy of a pioneer of electronic music in Latin America. These remastered tracks showcase Mateo's unique take on EBM, proto-house and early rave sound, ranging from the mid-80s to the early 90s.

Review: Visions of a haunting, maritime electro are conjured on Franck Kartell's latest for Noise To Meet You - fittingly dubbed Acoustic Warfare. Playing on themes that have gone hand-in-hand with the genre almost since its inception - and with the immense sonic power of certain subaquatic technologies, such as sonar, in mind - this is a minimal meander through endless submergent scapes and lowermost watery wonders. From 'Sonar Pulses' to 'Inside The Shadow Zone', the album plays off as if its beats were the inner workings of the craft we use to navigate them, while its the atmospheres evoke the lagoons, trenches and sea-floors that surround.

Liaisons Dangereuses
Review: Liaisons Dangereuses self-titled debut album was not an immediate success on its' release in 1981, but its' influence would spread far and wide. Almost entirely made up of synthesized rhythms, chords and melodies - with the addition of stylish vocals from all three band members - it would help define the "electronic body music sound". It quickly became a big record in both Detroit and Chicago, inadvertently helping to inspire the nascent techno and house scenes. Listening again to this reissue, it's amazing how well the music as aged. While heavy on stylish posturing, it still sounds thrillingly futuristic and alien. It should be an essential purchase for anyone with even the smallest interest in the history and development of electronic music.

Review: Martin Dupont was a French collective of immense talent originally founded by Alain Seghir in Marseille in 1980. Seghir called upon several different collaborators across the collective's career including the likes of Beverley Jane Crew, Brigitte Balian and Catherine Loy and all of them managed to tune into the same creative frequencies while serving up music that was colourful, enthusiastic, delicate, melancholy, and mysterious. Their seminal 1987 album Hot Paradox now arrives via a first-ever reissue on Minimal Wave and is one that transcends a tag as simple as new wave with its vibrant and emotive, sombre yet bright sounds that have made it something of a modern cult classic.

Nobody's Business re-release Kittin's first album, 'First Album', harkening to way back when the electroclash queen (Caroline Herve) formed one part of the duo Miss Kittin & The Hacker with Michael Amato. Perhaps it's time for an electroclash comeback, as we're no less keen on this album as we were back then. We're happily reminded of the hit popcorning single '1982', while between-the-beats coldness prevails on lesser-known cuts like 'Nurse' and 'L'Homme Dans L'Ombre', showing off the pair's near-sociopathically calculated sound. Also of note: this album's original release year, 2001, is to 2022 what 1982 was to it.

There's no better example of a follow-up LP this week than Nation Of Language's 'A Way Forward', which brings up the rear and engulfs 'Introduction', the band's 2020 debut. Put simply, this album is krautrocky, whereas the last one was closer to synthpop. This subtle change came as a result of Ian Devaney, Aidan Noell, and Michael Sue-Poi attempting to "trace the roots of their sound", "hoping to learn something from the early influences of our early influences", from big names like Can through to Laurie Spiegel and Cluster. Recorded through the past year's lockdowns, a long-form mood of relentless melancholy is the result, blending driving drum machines with intense reverb and yearning male vocals - 'The Grey Commute' and 'Former Self' being emotive highlights. Keep an eye for the limited red and blue split vinyl version of this one.

Review: Following on from their compilation EP of last year, Music From Memory return with another six tracks from Dutch musician Hubertus Baars aka Richenel. A somewhat illustrious figure in Dutch pop history with his flamboyant appearance, La Diferencia is a repackaged version of the original cassette release. It's a zeitgeist of the heady punk and squatter scene of Amsterdam in 1982, set against a backdrop of drugs and social unrest. It reflects a unique mix of punk aesthetics, with a synthesized bedroom funkiness. As well as having one of the more exceptional male voices to come out of the country, Richenel would go on to become a successful recording artist in the Netherlands before moving to Spain later in his career.

Review: Ryuichi Sakamoto's 1984 classic, Ongaku Zuka, finally gets a long overdue re-release. Heralded at the time as yet another example of Japan's sorely-missed musical genius in full flow, the tracks feature contributions from Yellow Magic Orchestra's Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, alongside Yasuaki Shimizu, Tatsuro Yamashita and Toshinori Kondo. Originally released in two versions, one with a bonus 7" two-track EP and another with a limited edition 12" three-tracker, both are now being reissued for the modern age. Part of an ongoing celebration of Sakamoto's life following his death in March 2023, when Ongaku Zukan (Musical Encyclopedia) hit it marked the celebrated musician and composer's first top five hit in his homeland, building on the success of both his soundtrack to Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and the Yellow Magic Orchestra, on which time had only recently been called. Syth pop perfection, with unique, mesmerising instrumental compositions, it's an essential for any fan.

Review: Tangerine Dream's ironically timeless classic, Zeit ('Time'), has once more been reissued on vinyl by LMLR. The experimental electronic album, originally released in 1972, amounts to far more than the sum of its parts: the haunting soundscapes and trembly synths heard on it have been sampled time and time again, proving the album's re-interpretability through time and its intention to transcend any zeitgeist. For what could be more timeless than an abstract whirl of ambience, not least one bolstered by kosmischesque moods, such as that evoked by the solar eclipse on the front cover? Prepare to zone out, enter flow, and focus on the present 'Zeit'.

Review: Finally closing the gap after five years silence, Vox Low return to Born Bad with their second album Keep On Falling. Over a string of singles the French kosmische-coldwavers cultivated a sound which took all the best bits of goth-tinged alternative music and poured them into a sharply focused whole. The band have only improved with time thanks to their rigorous touring schedule and this new full-length stalks even more vivid alleyways populated with denizens of the night and lit in flickering neon. There's a club streak to many of the tracks, but equally this is absolutely a live band playing with hearts and hands - just listen to 'New Place In Town' and prepare to be seduced whether it's your first listen to Vox Low or you've come back for more.

Review: Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan is the musical project of Gordon Chapman-Fox, who creates electronic music inspired by the history and architecture of the New Town (capital N, capital T) he grew up in, Warrington-Runcorn. The Nation's Most Central Location is his fourth album, and explores the theme of the north-south divide in the UK and the broken promises of regional town development - brutal concrete expressed in musical form. Its eight tracks mix ambient, synthpop and industrial, with samples from documentaries, speeches and adverts making up its vocal parts. The album is a nostalgic and critical reflection on the past and present of his hometown, exclusively reflecting on its place in the nation.
