  1. Stomp 5 (7:37)
  2. Don't Mess With La Foudre (8:33)
Review: The Skylax bossman most commonly known as Hardrock Striker ignites his Bleu Blanc House project with two quintessential happy house jams. All bubbles and strings, "Stomp 5" fuses disco with Chi-town to great filtered effect. Coming on strong like 1999 Roule record, there's a deep infectiousness in its loopy wizardry. "Don't Mess With La Foudre" hits even sweet g-spots with its big piano riff and mid 90s playfulness. Feel good vibes like this never die.

The Birds (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: NAAR 008. Rel: 31 Jul 17
  1. The Birds
  2. The Birds (Man Powers Tropical Bastard remix)
  3. Locate Yourself
Review: Ian Blevins has been busy making a name for himself on ESP Institute and Futureboogie, but now he comes to Not An Animal with a slightly different approach that still speaks to the skills the upstart producer has in his sonic arsenal. "The Birds" is a focused, steady-tracking cut for the deeper end of the night, but there's some serious weight in those drums and the heavily processed vocal snippets pack plenty of malaise. Man Power then step up with a "Tropical Bastard" remix of the original, cracking the curtains to allow a little light into the mix but stopping short of over-cooking the mood. "Locate Yourself" on the flip finds Blevins in tracky techno mode, and it turns out it's a style he can nail just as easily as the more organic tones he's known for.

Review: Third chapter for Blind Box Series back in the game with a brand new release from label owners Julien Sandre and Konstress. This time Blind Boxers proudly share the Ep with house giants Hector Moralez and Chris Carrier, exploring some of the finest shades of the underground dance music. Vintage drums, bubbling synth elements, trippy pad lines, everything mixed with that unique forward-thinking nature that marked this platform as one of the most appealing vinyl-only record label out there.

Blind Box 006 (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Blind Box - "Would"
  2. Blind Box - "Hedone"
  3. Julian Alexander - "Baku Man"
  4. Julian Alexander - "Casserole"
Review: Blind Box heads Julien Sandre and Konstress know a thing or two about deep, undulating house grooves, and their continued exploration of immersive cuts for hidden corners of the dance yields further delights on this sixth instalment in the Blind Box series. The first side of this 12" finds the two label bosses twisting out immaculate jams shot through with playful sound design. "Would" locks into a subtle swing and revels in lopsided synth stabs, while "Hedone" plunges into a stunning intricate techno landscape peppered with glitchy tones. On the flip, Julian Alexander follows suit with the crisp, funky "Baku Man" and the more experimental tones of "Casserole".

  1. To The Ocean Floor (11:19)
  2. Dreaming Of Paradise (6:39)
  3. Dreaming Of Paradise (Oracy Leaving Eden dub) (9:26)
Review: Fresh from Utrecht, Blue Closet makes his debut on Mojuba with two startling originals; "To The Ocean Floor" lives up to its name with big pad washes and beats that shuffle like an old Rolando joint. Immersive and captivating, it's the perfect set opener that allows you to take any direction you wish. Flip for "Dreaming Of Paradise", a yearning, barbed soul cut that's reminiscent of Lee Burridge 15 years ago but at around half the tempo. Powerful and dreamy, it's complemented by a bubbling version from Oracy that blows Closet's doors off. More please, Bluey.

  3. Blue Mondays - "Stop" (feat Kaysand - Swayzak Fac 10 rework) (13:04)
Review: Blue Mondays are a Mantua based project of Alex Ferrazzi and Keemani with singer Francesco Sperotto aka Kaysand (who got his start with deep house band Grammophono), on another fine EP for their eponymous imprint. First up is the deep down and dirty electro house of "Stop" featuring gritty synth arpeggios, dusty drums and sleazy vocals. The legendary Robert Owens should need no introduction, as do legendary British duo Justin Harris & Luke Solomon aka Freaks; whose brilliant "Right Now" appears in the form of a "Blue Mondays Tfbm mix" while the legendary Swayzak's version of "Stop" is an epic hypnotic techno journey over its full 13 minutes duration.

  3. Per Hammar - "BX Chamber"
Review: Dungeon Meat's self-titled label is not known for its subtlety, and so it goes on this rip-roaring various artists 12" featuring three rough and ready jams for the peak time house crowd. Blunt Instruments get things going straight away with the mean New Jersey swing of "Kum On", as tough and bumping a house cut as you're ever likely to find. Ron Obvious steps up with "Mindful Vision", bringing an utterly addictive stripped down garage-y shuffle to the table, while Per Hammar finishes the EP off with the breaks-embellished "BX Chamber", a freaked-out dub-soaked affair for the heads down crowd.

Review: Even if you weren't familiar with The Legend Of Gelert series, you'd probably assume it has something to do with Blind Jack's Journey. There's something of the aesthetic to The Legend Of Gelert that brings to mind those North Yorkshire pranksters. Apparently started with the heavy involvement of Luv*Jam, there is some interesting canine mythology to The Legend Of Gelert should you wish to delve further but it's not integral to enjoying the music. Several of the artists that featured on the previous two Gelert 12"s return here and as ever the overarching mood is one of dreamy ambience and wide-eyed house music.

  2. Nankoumandjan (feat Mangala Camara) (7:09)
  3. Benefit (feat Omar) (4:57)
  4. Fighting Spirit (7:24)
Review: Boddhi Satva's highly tribalistic strain of house music has been at the top of our minds for a while, and riding high on our digging radars. This is because the artist has managed to tell his own story and detach himself from momentary scenes or fashions. Instead, tracks like "Ngnari Konon" use the house formula only as a backing rhythm, and with the help of Africa's Oumou Sangare, Satva produces what is more of a world music piece. The same goes for "Nankoumandjan", but "Benefit" strays closer to something like UK bassline thanks to its jump-up beat and r&b-style vocals by Omar, while "Fighting Spirit" is what you would call a classic 'bass house' joint, filled with gargling low-ends and plenty of sweet tribalism. Sick.

  3. Love Will (Ancestral Soul mix) (5:25)
  4. Love Will (Ancestrumental mix) (5:29)
Review: Boddhi Satva is a Central African hi-tech (though he'd call it Ancestral) soul merchant via Belgium who has featured everywhere from Innervisions, Yoruba, BBE and of course Vega: which he's sure known as a staple of. "Love Will" (main mix) is darkly restrained yet seductive futurism: the kind of track that Derrick May or Dixon would play mid set for some life affirming moments on the dancefloor. The instrumental version up next forgoes Bilal's spiritual vocals to let those rusty spitfire rhythm patterns and sparkling synths do the work. The Ancestral Soul mix goes for more of an Afro sound with its tribal elements accentuated by some brilliant bongo and steel drum action.

  3. Jay - "Balsam Drum" (6:30)
  4. Webstarr - "The Muse" (7:02)
Review: Midland's Graded launches a new diffusion imprint: Intergraded. Featured here are four cuts from emerging producers. With Graded now focusing on the label boss's solo work and ReGraded catering to a different style altogether - the logical progression was to start a new label that could help introduce this music to a wider audience. Body In The Thames kicks things off on the A side - despite the name he's actually Swedish. His track "Silver Threaded Crystal Beads" is an emotive piece that sits somewhere between early Detroit techno and electro, in the vein of the Motor City godfather Juan Atkins. This is followed by the slinky tech house of "Silky" by London's Peach - a sturdy number supported by ethereal elements. On the flip, NTS host Jay (Siren) presents some moody, heads down techno for the late night on "Balsam Drum" while Yorkshire native Webstarr (De Grey/Mistry) goes deep into the afterhours on the darkly hypnotic "The Muse".

Review: Deep house prankster DJ Koze is clearly on a bit of a roll at the moment; the Pampa boss served up the best DJ Kicks in quite some time and has released one of the singles of the year in XTC. Now he's welcoming peculiar deep house auteur Axel Boman back into the Pampa fold with a fine two track 12" 1979. The title track's simple conga beat, hypnotising strings and rising pads build the suspense until that awesome bassline drops. On the flip we have "Nokturn (Grand Finale)" an epic bongo and hi-hat workout reminiscent of The Hayden Andre Brown Project's "Tribal Life" on Strobe from back in 1991. Tip!

  2. Iris
Review: After collaborating together on the Cloverleaf Days EP a couple of years ago, Jacques Bon and Christopher Rau have teamed up again for another brooding two-tracker on Smallville. As you might expect, "Morning Funk" is a sinister little beast, using haunting keys and a subtle but propulsive beat to create the perfect up all night vibe. "Iris" is a more warm and mellow affair, although still executed with an endearing strangeness to it. As ever Smallville are one of those go-to labels for a special breed of deep house that keeps things simple but says a lot in the process.

Tell Me Lies follows a superb full-length album released on the excellent 100% Silk in 2013 and continues on the path to establish James Booth's own sound. His voice is characterized by an unbelievable precision and sensuality that defines his finely sculpted songs down to the last filter opening. It is this razor sharp focus that fills the EP's minimalist approach with tremendous weight and power. At the same time, this purity also renders the songs to become multifunctional entities capable of lighting up dancefloors while also perfect for the headphone listener.

  4. Why Would You Not (5:55)
Review: Previously spotted on Lowtec's revived Out To Lunch label, James Booth's wayward variety of house music has been largely released through the 100%Silk label. That is certainly not a bad thing - we love the LA-based label - but it's refreshing to see him land on London's own Church imprint. The promoters-turned-label-owners have got a good thing going, and it's equally exciting to see them broadening their reach by landing some more homegrown talent. This four-tracker is deep and effective for floor use: "Silver Blaze" is a placid slice of chord-heavy house, ""Soup" stretches the percussion and lands on a two-step territory, "Vanish" goes all Chicago on us, and "Why Would You Not" goes deeper and murkier than any other track on this fine house excursion.

  1. Borrowed Identity - "Cambio"
  2. San Proper - "Handbreakturn"
  3. Dave Aju - "Get It"
  4. Frivolous - "Little Devils"
Review: From the label: When trends in music can come and go in the blink of an eye, ten years is a long time to stay relevant, passionate and real on the frontline. From its roots in the Parisian club scene by way of its spiritual home at Fuse in Brussels and so on to the globe-trotting, multi-faceted entity that it is today, Lessizmore is living proof of how to do a decade right. The fundamental heartbeat of this European house and techno institution is the maverick music that its affiliated artists make. Of course what the label sounds like now is not necessarily what the label sounded like back in 2006, but it's telling that some of the original characters are still with the label to this day, while many are long time members of the LIZM family that have joined the ranks over the years. In piecing together this compilation, the idea from label founders Jessica Bossuyt and Pierre Noisiez was simply to represent where their brainchild is at right now, from guests at their events in the early days to more recent collaborators of all kinds. Borrowed Identity kicks off the second EP with a smoothly rendered vision of contemporary deep house housing a poignant message at its core, while San Proper follows it up with his irrepressible personality positively leaping out of the track in a fit of live instrumentation and unbridled psychedelic funk. Dave Aju too is an artist it's hard to mistake, his cool and deadly vocals sitting amongst a sleek club construction that ranks among his most DJ-ready tracks to date. Always a trusted source of unconventional magic both in the studio and on the stage, Frivolous is on hand to demonstrate how to be playful with wild sound design and still come out with a killer party track.

Review: The master returns: Atavisme chief Pepe Bradock presents four eccentric groove experiments executed in ever impressive fashion for his label's 19th release. This one is more uptempo than previous efforts, as heard on the trippy "Panique Manucure" - a wonky and textured stomper incorporating layers of disorienting samples, with grinding monosynths and rusty rhythm patterns meandering between. Proving he's got oddball grooves for any occasion, there's the moody slow burner "Furious Yogi" or "Ave Psychic" on the flip - which sees the French legend slam out the most unique take on techno that we've heard in a while.

  1. Is This Really A Party? (7:46)

Review: Publicity-shy Parisian Pepe Bradock is more than worthy of his cult status. Even so, it would be nice of him to give a bit of warning when he's about to drop a new 12". Exodus 8, his first outing of 2018, pretty much turned up with no prior warning. A-side "Is This Really A Party?" is, somewhat surprisingly, a much more straight-forward dancefloor track than we've come to expect. Although there are plenty of weird jazz samples and straight noises, the sludgy, bass-heavy rhythm track tips a wink to his lauded, turn-of-the-millennium deep house workouts. Flipside "Grandgousier" boasts some seriously snappy and bumping beats, with the eccentric French producer smothering it in more quirky electronics, delay-laden, barely audible vocal samples and trippy effects.

  1. Tresors (6:21)
  2. Tsundoku (5:43)
Review: Some two decades after delivering his first release, Pepe Bradock continues to make some of the most inventive - if occasionally overly challenging - house records around. This bizarrely titled 12" is the Parisian producer's first for almost a year and contains two typically eccentric cuts. A-side "Tresors" is underpinned by a loose but locked-in groove, but it's the smorgasbord of weird samples and effects - jazz synths, trippy noises, dubbed-out horns, buried acid lines, and so on - that really catches the ear. Flipside "Tsundonku" is arguably even more trippy thanks to Bradock's use of backwards percussion hits, grandiose filtered double bass, more weird noises and a rock solid, techno style kick-drum groove.

Review: Spleandor & Squalor founders Brame and Hamo started 2018 in confident fashion, serving up an EP that contained some of their strongest tracks to date ("Club Orange"). There are plenty more fine workouts to be found on this relatively speedy follow-up, from the swirling but driving early morning intoxication of "Parade Rain" - all elongated synthesizer notes, sun-bright melodies and symphonic chords rising above thrusting bass and beats - to the more jacking and spacey "Sports Complex". Arguably even better is the breezy, loved-up and rushing retro-futurism of "Limewire", which joins the dots between Italian dream house and early breakbeat hardcore. This in turn is given a chunkier, 4/4 house tweak by giddy retro-futurists Tuff City Kids, whose version is predictably endorphin-fuelled.
