Review: The ever-charitable Needs project continues apace with another stunning cast of characters offering up their dancefloor creations to help a good cause - the environmentally-focused Cool Earth NGO. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. Tiffany brings a particularly crafty approach to her own drum funk science on "Sun Trip" and Henry Hyde cools things down with the mellow, new age 2 step stylings of "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim."

Count On It
Reprise (Noha Reprize edit)
Count On It (Noha Count On Me remix)
Review: Italian label Panick Panick! might be best known for carrying releases from the likes of Noha and Elon, but now they're welcoming the mighty Carl Finlow to the fold. There's always an electroid streak to the legendary producer's sound, but he's equally tipped towards the steady thump of 4/4 on this particular outing. That doesn't dilute the imaginative brushstrokes of his immaculate production one jot, best demonstrated on the sparkling 'Count On It' with its rich layers of modulating synth work. Noha offers reinterpretations of both original tracks on the B side, edging in a little more Euro techno functionality without dampening the flamboyant spirit of Finlow's production style.

Season Of The Solar Wind
Review: The Martian's 'The Long Winter Of Mars' marks a triumphant return, celebrating 30 years since Red Planet 5's original release. This reissue spotlights two iconic tracks, each occupying a side of the EP, and serves as a potent reminder of Detroit's techno legacy. Side-1 features 'Skypainter,' a track that transports the listener to uncharted sonic territories. It's beautifully layered, with an emotional depth that keeps the energy constant from start to finish - Detroit techno at its most expressive. On Side-2, 'Season Of The Solar Wind' delivers a powerful punch. This track is a prime example of dynamic Detroit-style techno, with a rhythm that captures the raw energy and innovation that defined the genre. This reissue from Red Planet, Underground Resistance's legendary sublabel, is an essential piece for anyone who reveres the Detroit sound.

Review: The Martian's Ghostdancer, reissued by the iconic Red Planet label, is a true gem in the world of Detroit techno. This record radiates a warm, soulful funk, blending vintage Detroit sounds with a unique twist. Side-1 kicks off with 'Medicine Man,' a track steeped in classic Detroit vibes, followed by 'The Vanishing Race,' both tracks reflecting The Martian's mastery in crafting timeless techno. Side-2 brings an intriguing contrast. 'Windwalker' is an uplifting, jazzy piece that exudes happiness, while 'The Talking Rocks Of Mars' ventures into darker, rougher territory, offering a captivating divergence from the other tracks. This contrast on Side-2 highlights The Martian's exceptional production skills, showcasing both depth and versatility. As Red Planet begins reissuing its catalogue for the first time, Ghostdancer is set to be in high demand. For any Detroit techno enthusiast, this release is essential, a standout from one of the genre's most influential artists.

Heike (Mood mix)
Review: Ricardo Villalobos wasn't always the cult figure he is today. At the start of his career he was an underground producer still finding his feet and fomenting his own sound. It was in the first decade of his career that he cooked up this tune and had what is about as close as he will ever get to a techno anthem. 'Heike' rides on big drums with detuned synth lines layered up next to female vocal coos, pixelated synth modulations and prying bass. Its a mental workout as much as a physical one and still bags today, which his why it gets this reissue on Rawax alongside the Mood Mix on the flip which is more dubby and dialled back into to deeper beats.

Review: To celebrate its 30th anniversary, techno titan Richie Hawtin aka minimal pioneer Plastikman has remastered his influential second album Musik from the original tapes and pressed it up to limited edition bio-vinyl. It was first released in November 1994 via NovaMute and his own Plus 8 and was soon hailed as a masterclass in minimal techno, catapulting Hawtin toward the heights he still enjoys today. Prior to the full album release, the track 'Plastique' hinted at a more dancefloor-oriented sound while maintaining an unsettling edge that characterises much of the ensuing album's abstract and alien allure.

Review: Shockingly, 30 years have passed since Energy 52's 'Cafe Del Mar', DJ Kid Paul and Cosmic Baby's now iconic early trance anthem, first started tearing up dancefloors worldwide. To mark the occasion, Superstition has decided to serve up this lovely, boxed 'anniversary edition'. These include a cheery, piano-powered Deadmau5 rework, a darker and more tech-tinged Tale of Us take, a hands-aloft Paul Van Dyk interpretation, and Orbital's recent rework, which has been heard many times at festivals this year.

Review: Who doesn't love it when new Legowelt music drops? The Dutch is one of the most prolific producers in the game but he never sounds the same from one record to the next. This time out he lands on Hotmix with a two-track 10" that kicks off with 'DRUMCOMPUTER GLORY.' It's a warped track with acid tinges, mirky synths, weird vocal samples and jacked-up drums that are raw and proudly old school. On the flip side is 'CASIO CTK630 HOMEKEYBOARD', a snaking groove with hissing hi-hats and more smeared, smudgy synths that make for an unusual but alluring atmosphere.

Review: Bluetrain is one of our favourite artists in any genre and a real dub techno don. He often drops his own work on his own label but here steps up to Kontakt with a couple of killer jams. First up he serves up a special edition dub of 'Frozen Rose' that is a signature sound for him: ice cold percussion and rolling east with watery, liquid, rippling chords disappearing off to an infinite horizon while shimmering vocals add extra layers of depth. Flip it over and you will find 'Precious Times' (feat Prince Morella - Roots version) which is another brilliantly heady back room sound.

Review: Fletcher and Steve O'Sullivan have often worked or appeared together in the past so it makes sense that the former now invites the latter to be the first person to release on his newly minted and always sure to be worth checking Social Currency imprint. They take the reins together across floor-focussed cuts that are marbled with deep pads and introspective sounds. 'Cold Calling Blues' is warm and airy with smoky vocal sounds and precision dub techno drum loops, 'Midnight At 1:30' hits a little harder but is still zoned out and serene and 'Shatner's Groove' takes on subtle deep space moods with deft pads and spoken word additions.

Known for projects like The Vision, Floorplan and Underground Resistance, Hood takes a conceptual turn here and blends his signature dancefloor-ready beats with experimental and beatless tracks like 'Silicone Fingers' and 'Diamond Age.' This distinctive mix of pulsing grooves and abstract soundscapes gives Molecule a unique edge and shows a more exploratory side of Hood's minimal techno mastery. Review: Hauff's highly anticipated debut on Tresor, and it's as strikingly original as you'd expect. The title track, 'Multiplying My Absurdities', opens with a slow build of magnetic synths and acid drops that seem to pulsate with playful skepticism. It's simple yet gripping, pulling you into a dark, hypnotic space where the unexpected becomes beautiful. 'Punks in the Gym' takes the energy up a notch, drawing inspiration from a notorious Australian climbing route. The track climbs relentlessly, each bar steeper than the last, with 303-driven tremors building into a volcanic eruption of sound. It's a relentless ride that doesn't let up, pushing you to the limits. Closing out the release, 'Humanoid Fruit' ventures even deeper into the unknown. Its prehistoric soundscape, full of sharp synth bursts, feels like a chaotic journey through ancient lands where acid rain falls from the sky. Dark, eerie and transporting, this track leaves a lasting impression.

Review: Veteran techno producer Steve Bicknell brings fresh life to his classic work with this remastered double pack, Lost Recordings #1: Why? & For Whom? This release takes listeners deep into the world of hypnotic rhythmic techno, offering a range of minimal styles that keep the energy flowing. Some of the highlights include: 'Magnitude Of Such' which kicks things off with a gradual build, creating a sense of anticipation that pulls you in. 'Construction Of Thousands' introduces a Detroit-inspired, otherworldly melody that stands out with its rich textures. 'Mobile Terminals' shifts the experience into a spacey, futuristic trek, making it feel like an exploration of uncharted territory. Finally, 'Accelerating Others' delivers a disorienting soundscape, reminiscent of a lunar landing, closing the journey with a sense of mystery. Bicknell's mastery in minimal techno shines through in this release, making it an essential addition for anyone looking to dive deeper into the genre's more hypnotic side. Not too many people are doing techno like this on such a high level like Bicknell is.

This one again comes from DDrhode and opens with 'Ghoroob' which is a super nice and icy deep dub roller with smeared pads and heady ambient vibes. The dub slows things down and adds even more bottomless dub depths. 'DD2' (Sohrab dub) is a warm, peaker number but still very much a late-night and backroom jam and the Down The Rhode version of the A1 is a conscious classic with deep meaning and deeper rhythms.

Zero Key is the first 12" and it opens with a blend of spread synths, dubby undercurrents and microhouse rhythms. Pained vocals drift in and out of focus. There is a hallucinogenic quality to some of the sounds and an aquatic feel to the way the subtle and supple grooves unfold. It is otherworldly music that is rooted in real-world emotion.

It is unconventional to say the least but always inviting with warm, dubby pads, fragments of melody and undulating rhythms all bubbling away in loose, freeform fashion. These late-night sounds tracks are inescapably immersive and cavernous and they cocoon you in sound as if you're back in the womb. It's a magnificent place to get lost and sink in.

Pura Lempuyang Telu Part 1 is packed with new material as well as a cult cut from the vaults that has been remastered. That is Martin Jarl's deliciously deep 'Weetabix' while Yagya keeps it heady with 'Gogur Dagur', Ohm & Octal Industries lay down icy dub techno on 'Chanti's Dream' and Paolo Zuliani's 'Facing Reality' is a more upright and steely closer.

Review: Burnski's Constant Black label puts out constantly good sounds for all those of a minimal and tech house persuasion. This 33rd such outing comes from Per Hammer who offers a trio of irresistible grooves. 'Everybody_hz' kicks off with rubbery drums and bass intertwining with each other while wonky synths up top add some tripped-out feels. A Varhat adds a little extra bounce and urgency to this silky late-night hypnotiser and then it's back to Hammer for 'The Danish URL'. It's a hooky groove with warped pads rippling up top while closer 'Arkivo' is a more textural and abstract affair with a nice dubby undercurrent.

Review: French electronic icon Laurent Garnier returns with the FABRICLG4 EP to celebrate the 25th anniversary of London's legendary club. This release showcases Garnier's signature range and opens with 'Playing with the Low-End,' a fierce 2-step track that nods to the heritage of UK club sounds. The journey then shifts to techno with 'Resonances from the D' barrelling along with great force and then on the flip side, 'Odyssee Maison' features deep house grooves with Dan Diamond and last but not least 'On the Way Home' rounds out the experience with ambient sounds. This one comes with "augmented reality artwork" by Atelier 14 and is another doozy from the already untouchable Garnier.

Review: Steve Pickton, widely known as Stasis, has long been a key figure in UK techno, with a distinctive sound that blends Detroit-inspired rhythms and dreamy, emotive melodies. After making waves with releases on B12 Records, his deep catalog includes aliases such as Paul W. Teebrooke and Phenomyna, each showcasing his range. His latest effort, 'The Sugarplum EP' on Fencepiece, continues this legacy. Side-1 starts with 'Sugarplum 1,' which delivers funky techno with a rhythmic pulse that demands attention. 'Sugarplum 2' follows, weaving darker, melodic tones that echo early 90s UK techno, combining nostalgia with modern production techniques. On Side-2, 'Sugarplum 3' leans into a minimal yet addictive groove, its dirty textures adding a raw edge. Rounding out the EP is 'Sugarplum 4,' where a grand Detroit-inspired melody takes center stage. This track stands as the most polished and cohesive, offering a rich, layered experience. Fencepiece continues to be a label that gives us techno that's both familiar and forward-thinking.

Review: Robert Leiner returns with Analog Days, a celebration of electronic craftsmanship released on De:tuned Records. Known for his influential work in the early 90s on R&S and Apollo, Leiner brings a fresh yet nostalgic sound with this ten-track album. Recorded between 2005 and 2015, Analog Days blends rhythmic complexity with serene atmospheres, showcasing Leiner's skill at balancing intensity and calm. Tracks like 'Echobox' stand out for their gritty, processed beats, while 'Session 0510' captures a more melodic side, almost touching on IDM. Fans of Leiner's classic Visions of the Past album will appreciate 'My Dream,' which echoes the ambient depth of his earlier work. The album flows effortlessly between dancefloor energy and introspective moments. 'Chords' is particularly radiant, its soaring harmonies evoking the spirit of 1993's golden era. This release is a well-rounded journey through electronica, perfect for listeners who appreciate both the past and the present of techno and ambient music.

Sub Basics is next up and is a key UK figure in the deep dubstep scene who has had big support for his tunes on the likes of Lion Charge, Foundation Audio and Juan Forte from Ben U.F.O. and Kia. First up he links with Toura for the liquid rhythms of 'Cause' while 'Effect' gets more prickly with a ticking lead synth and deep underwater dub vibes. 'Call' brings some deft melody and more trance-inducing grooves while closer 'Response' is a nice and punchy dub techno cut with ice-cold hi-hats.

Review: Techno-titanic title-holder Roman Flügel needs no introduction. On his latest vinyl EP, 'No Solutions', the artist returns to Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound with his second release of 2024, keeping the hype afloat with just three short rain-makings in the vein of glistening, retro trance and house - contrasting to some of his earlier, more percussive outings released round the turn of the '20s. This time, Flügel plugs the sensibility of eighties dance music and pop production into a more kick-implantable, danceable dream, bridging gaps between retro and modern dancefloors. 'No Solutions', 'Sapphire' and 'Dragged' each plod through finessed synth flicks, torrential Moog mambos, and dizzily detuned decontractions, all of which portray a blued, armoured alternate vision of an eighties that never crossed the threshold of the next decade, continuing frozen in time while we nonetheless bowled towards the oncoming singularity.

Leading the EP is 'Atom Soldiers', a deep cut from the late 90s that hits with raw energy and hypnotic acid lines, finally getting its well-deserved release. 'Signal 303' brings a fresh approach, as Parker revives his TB-303 to craft a track that's full of intricate, pulsing rhythms, perfect for any peak-time set. The EP closes with 'Resonator (Adam X Pumped Up Edit)', a rework of a 1997 classic that now packs an even heavier punch. Adam X's edit gives the track an updated drive, making it a must for today's techno floors. This release is a solid pick for those who appreciate acid sounds with a modern twist.

Unusually given his prolific work-rate earlier in his career, the much-admired producer has not released much new music of late; in fact, this mini-album for Fabric offshoot Houndstooth marks his first 100% fresh release for five years. It's predictably impressive, with highlights including the twisted TB-303 trickery, bombastic sub-bass and polyrhythmic post-dubstep UK bass beats of 'Codex', the high-octane modular techno insanity of 'Crawl', the spaced-out and dubbed-out, Autechre-ish IDM weirdness of 'Frekm (Part 1)', and the deconstructed breakbeats, psychoactive electronics and metallic effects of 'Frekm (Part 2)'.

He's got an arsenal of classics but also knows how to kick out brilliant new jams. Syncrophone is where he lands now with his 'Boom Boom EP' which is a great embodiment of what he does best. The title cut is cantering than drums and hammering hits infused with some unsettling synth stabs. 'Zen' brings a little funk to the drum programming and 'Delirium' zones you out with some more heady pads before 'Knock' nails you to the floor once more with wonky acid and some freaky breakdowns.

Each is a classic example of modern house influenced by classic EBM and early 90s European trance. The release kicks off with 'Modus Operandi' by Molen & Nahuel on which EBM influenced bass lines are combined with break samples. Michelle follows with the tense 'Last Cello' as paranoid synths and spasmodic percussion cuts in & out. Barcelona based Z@p's 'Ignorance' blends spooky synths and acid lines sounding like lost Italian proto-trance. Latress closes the release with 'Perseverance', another fine acid track.

Latin Lovers (2004 version)
Review: Monika Kruse has always operated on the darker end of the minimal techno spectrum, as has her long running and influential label Terminal M. Now the boss is back with a new EP that presents a 2004 version of her classic 'Latin Lovers.' It's a percussive jumble - a steamy and exotic track laden with poly-rhythms and chasing vocals. A Joyhauser remix ups the pace and makes it into speedy techno while Ilija Djokovic flips 'Violet' into a moody, synth-laced cut full of epic breakdowns and prog drama.

Review: Orlando Voorn delivers a heartfelt experience with Power Of Beauty, blending emotional deep house and Detroit techno influences. The title track, 'Power Of Beauty,' stands out as a deeply emotive piece, weaving beautiful melodies that resonate on a personal level. 'Sounds Of Now' shifts the tone slightly, infusing Detroit techno soul into the mix, adding depth and a touch of nostalgia. Other highlights on this record include 'Leftfield Essence,' a unique house track with an almost lullaby-like quality, offering something truly different. 'Peach Town' rounds out the collection with its catchy grooves, capturing the magic of house music in a way that sticks with you. Fans of deep house and techno will not be disappointed by this record. Voorn's ability to craft tracks that are both moving and memorable - as usual!
