Review: The ever-charitable Needs project continues apace with another stunning cast of characters offering up their dancefloor creations to help a good cause - the environmentally-focused Cool Earth NGO. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. Tiffany brings a particularly crafty approach to her own drum funk science on "Sun Trip" and Henry Hyde cools things down with the mellow, new age 2 step stylings of "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim."

Reprise (Noha Reprize edit)
Count On It (Noha Count On Me remix)
Review: Italian label Panick Panick! might be best known for carrying releases from the likes of Noha and Elon, but now they're welcoming the mighty Carl Finlow to the fold. There's always an electroid streak to the legendary producer's sound, but he's equally tipped towards the steady thump of 4/4 on this particular outing. That doesn't dilute the imaginative brushstrokes of his immaculate production one jot, best demonstrated on the sparkling 'Count On It' with its rich layers of modulating synth work. Noha offers reinterpretations of both original tracks on the B side, edging in a little more Euro techno functionality without dampening the flamboyant spirit of Finlow's production style.

Season Of The Solar Wind
Review: The Martian's 'The Long Winter Of Mars' marks a triumphant return, celebrating 30 years since Red Planet 5's original release. This reissue spotlights two iconic tracks, each occupying a side of the EP, and serves as a potent reminder of Detroit's techno legacy. Side-1 features 'Skypainter,' a track that transports the listener to uncharted sonic territories. It's beautifully layered, with an emotional depth that keeps the energy constant from start to finish - Detroit techno at its most expressive. On Side-2, 'Season Of The Solar Wind' delivers a powerful punch. This track is a prime example of dynamic Detroit-style techno, with a rhythm that captures the raw energy and innovation that defined the genre. This reissue from Red Planet, Underground Resistance's legendary sublabel, is an essential piece for anyone who reveres the Detroit sound.

Review: To celebrate its 30th anniversary, techno titan Richie Hawtin aka minimal pioneer Plastikman has remastered his influential second album Musik from the original tapes and pressed it up to limited edition bio-vinyl. It was first released in November 1994 via NovaMute and his own Plus 8 and was soon hailed as a masterclass in minimal techno, catapulting Hawtin toward the heights he still enjoys today. Prior to the full album release, the track 'Plastique' hinted at a more dancefloor-oriented sound while maintaining an unsettling edge that characterises much of the ensuing album's abstract and alien allure.

Heike (Mood mix)
Review: Ricardo Villalobos wasn't always the cult figure he is today. At the start of his career he was an underground producer still finding his feet and fomenting his own sound. It was in the first decade of his career that he cooked up this tune and had what is about as close as he will ever get to a techno anthem. 'Heike' rides on big drums with detuned synth lines layered up next to female vocal coos, pixelated synth modulations and prying bass. Its a mental workout as much as a physical one and still bags today, which his why it gets this reissue on Rawax alongside the Mood Mix on the flip which is more dubby and dialled back into to deeper beats.

Review: The Martian's Ghostdancer, reissued by the iconic Red Planet label, is a true gem in the world of Detroit techno. This record radiates a warm, soulful funk, blending vintage Detroit sounds with a unique twist. Side-1 kicks off with 'Medicine Man,' a track steeped in classic Detroit vibes, followed by 'The Vanishing Race,' both tracks reflecting The Martian's mastery in crafting timeless techno. Side-2 brings an intriguing contrast. 'Windwalker' is an uplifting, jazzy piece that exudes happiness, while 'The Talking Rocks Of Mars' ventures into darker, rougher territory, offering a captivating divergence from the other tracks. This contrast on Side-2 highlights The Martian's exceptional production skills, showcasing both depth and versatility. As Red Planet begins reissuing its catalogue for the first time, Ghostdancer is set to be in high demand. Review: Who doesn't love it when new Legowelt music drops? The Dutch is one of the most prolific producers in the game but he never sounds the same from one record to the next. This time out he lands on Hotmix with a two-track 10" that kicks off with 'DRUMCOMPUTER GLORY.' It's a warped track with acid tinges, mirky synths, weird vocal samples and jacked-up drums that are raw and proudly old school. On the flip side is 'CASIO CTK630 HOMEKEYBOARD', a snaking groove with hissing hi-hats and more smeared, smudgy synths that make for an unusual but alluring atmosphere.

First up he serves up a special edition dub of 'Frozen Rose' that is a signature sound for him: ice cold percussion and rolling east with watery, liquid, rippling chords disappearing off to an infinite horizon while shimmering vocals add extra layers of depth. Flip it over and you will find 'Precious Times' (feat Prince Morella - Roots version) which is another brilliantly heady back room sound.

Review: Fletcher and Steve O'Sullivan have often worked or appeared together in the past so it makes sense that the former now invites the latter to be the first person to release on his newly minted and always sure to be worth checking Social Currency imprint. They take the reins together across floor-focussed cuts that are marbled with deep pads and introspective sounds. 'Cold Calling Blues' is warm and airy with smoky vocal sounds and precision dub techno drum loops, 'Midnight At 1:30' hits a little harder but is still zoned out and serene and 'Shatner's Groove' takes on subtle deep space moods with deft pads and spoken word additions.

Review: The Nexus 21 'Mind Machines' album finally sees the light, bringing the shelved UK techno classic to eager fans. Originally recorded in the early 90s, these tracks capture the essence of Detroit-inspired UK techno, fusing raw energy with British flair. Standouts include 'Nexodus' and 'Everything (No Statues),' with Motor City talent Marc Kinchen and Anthony Shakir lending their touch. While only two tracks saw official release back then, this album unearths unreleased gems and alternate mixes, showcasing the duo's groundbreaking sound that influenced both Nexus 21 and their rave-alter ego, Altern 8. A long-awaited landmark.

Review: Molecule is the 2003 debut album from Detroit minimal techno innovator Robert Hood under his sci-fi-inspired Monobox alias, and despite what he has done since, it still stands out in his extensive discography. Known for projects like The Vision, Floorplan and Underground Resistance, Hood takes a conceptual turn here and blends his signature dancefloor-ready beats with experimental and beatless tracks like 'Silicone Fingers' and 'Diamond Age.' This distinctive mix of pulsing grooves and abstract soundscapes gives Molecule a unique edge and shows a more exploratory side of Hood's minimal techno mastery. 'Mobile Terminals' shifts the experience into a spacey, futuristic trek, making it feel like an exploration of uncharted territory. Finally, 'Accelerating Others' delivers a disorienting soundscape, reminiscent of a lunar landing, closing the journey with a sense of mystery. Bicknell's mastery in minimal techno shines through in this release, making it an essential addition for anyone looking to dive deeper into the genre's more hypnotic side. Not too many people are doing techno like this on such a high level like Bicknell is.

Review: False Aralia is a new self-titled label from Brian Foote (of Peak Oil, Kranky, etc.) that launches with "a series of recordings growing in all directions" and that draws together the work of artists from North America who are centred around the studio practices of Izaak Schlossman. Zero Key is the first 12" and it opens with a blend of spread synths, dubby undercurrents and microhouse rhythms. Pained vocals drift in and out of focus. There is a hallucinogenic quality to some of the sounds and an aquatic feel to the way the subtle and supple grooves unfold. It is otherworldly music that is rooted in real-world emotion.

Track Ball Treck
Review: Ron & Roland was a mid-90s collaboration between Matt Hodgson (7th Voyage) and Laurant Webb (Housey Doingz) and at their peak they made some untouchable records that perfectly straddled the house and techno divide. This new reissue on Pariter is one of them and it features a trio of cuts laced with visceral acid energy. 'Nassaur Bassed Party' kicks off with crispy drums and snares that cut through the rich bass. 'Acidless Party' gets wilder with extra 303 energy and 'Track Ball Treck' balances dynamic drive with sonic detail for a dubby, elastic groove that was initially recorded at Swag Studios Croydon in 1996 and, with these other cuts, was initially released on Surreal. It's been a cult favourite ever since and still sounds magnificent.

Review: Techno-titanic title-holder Roman Flugel needs no introduction. On his latest vinyl EP, 'No Solutions', the artist returns to Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound with his second release of 2024, keeping the hype afloat with just three short rain-makings in the vein of glistening, retro trance and house - contrasting to some of his earlier, more percussive outings released round the turn of this decade. This time, Flugel plugs the sensibility of 80s dance music and pop production into a more kick-implantable, danceable dream, bridging gaps between retro and modern dancefloors. 'No Solutions', 'Sapphire' and 'Dragged' each plod through finessed synth flicks, torrential Moog mambos, and dizzily detuned decontractions, all of which portray a blued, armoured alternate vision of an eighties that never crossed the threshold of the next decade, continuing frozen in time while we nonetheless bowled towards the oncoming singularity.

Review: As you probably know, Lempuyang is a vital techno label that puts out a lot of music. Amongst that is the annual compilation series which again in 2024 is split over a pair of 12"s. Pura Lempuyang Telu Part 1 is packed with new material as well as a cult cut from the vaults that has been remastered. That is Martin Jarl's deliciously deep 'Weetabix' while Yagya keeps it heady with 'Gogur Dagur', Ohm & Octal Industries lay down icy dub techno on 'Chanti's Dream' and Paolo Zuliani's 'Facing Reality' is a more upright and steely closer.

Review: Steve Pickton, widely known as Stasis, has long been a key figure in UK techno, with a distinctive sound that blends Detroit-inspired rhythms and dreamy, emotive melodies. After making waves with releases on B12 Records, his deep catalog includes aliases such as Paul W. Teebrooke and Phenomyna, each showcasing his range. His latest effort, 'The Sugarplum EP' on Fencepiece, continues this legacy. Side-1 starts with 'Sugarplum 1,' which delivers funky techno with a rhythmic pulse that demands attention. 'Sugarplum 2' follows, weaving darker, melodic tones that echo early 90s UK techno, combining nostalgia with modern production techniques. On Side-2, 'Sugarplum 3' leans into a minimal yet addictive groove, its dirty textures adding a raw edge. Rounding out the EP is 'Sugarplum 4,' where a grand Detroit-inspired melody takes center stage. This track stands as the most polished and cohesive, offering a rich, layered experience. Fencepiece continues to be a label that gives us techno that's both familiar and forward-thinking.

Review: Bait is a label run by Beatrice M that has built up a fine following for its digital releases and has also now made the successful move to vinyl. Sub Basics is next up and is a key UK figure in the deep dubstep scene who has had big support for his tunes on the likes of Lion Charge, Foundation Audio and Juan Forte from Ben U.F.O. and Kia. First up he links with Toura for the liquid rhythms of 'Cause' while 'Effect' gets more prickly with a ticking lead synth and deep underwater dub vibes. 'Call' brings some deft melody and more trance-inducing grooves while closer 'Response' is a nice and punchy dub techno cut with ice-cold hi-hats.

Review: Burnski's Constant Black label puts out constantly good sounds for all those of a minimal and tech house persuasion. This 33rd such outing comes from Per Hammer who offers a trio of irresistible grooves. 'Everybody_hz' kicks off with rubbery drums and bass intertwining with each other while wonky synths up top add some tripped-out feels. A Varhat adds a little extra bounce and urgency to this silky late-night hypnotiser and then it's back to Hammer for 'The Danish URL'. It's a hooky groove with warped pads rippling up top while closer 'Arkivo' is a more textural and abstract affair with a nice dubby undercurrent.

Review: DJRum's career has blossomed in recent times, in no small part thanks to his mind-mangling and frequently thrill-a-minute DJ sets. Unusually given his prolific work-rate earlier in his career, the much-admired producer has not released much new music of late; in fact, this mini-album for Fabric offshoot Houndstooth marks his first 100% fresh release for five years. It's predictably impressive, with highlights including the twisted TB-303 trickery, bombastic sub-bass and polyrhythmic post-dubstep UK bass beats of 'Codex', the high-octane modular techno insanity of 'Crawl', the spaced-out and dubbed-out, Autechre-ish IDM weirdness of 'Frekm (Part 1)', and the deconstructed breakbeats, psychoactive electronics and metallic effects of 'Frekm (Part 2)'.

Sims and Broom whack up the velocity thruster to eleven on the As 1 and 2 respectively, with 'Snapshot '99' and 'WWWWWWWWork' providing little opportunity for exhalation or ease. The odometer hand is well and truly straining, nigh broken by the time we reach Mark Williams' 'Next 21s', with its hypey falsetto rave shouts, while the diminutive duo Roku round things off on a salacious acid smoke bomb, 'Acid Amnesia'.

Review: When this superb double-pack was first released in 1996, Bandulu had already spent four years finely tuning their trademark sound - decidedly spacey and subtly percussive take on techno that offered nods aplenty to Motor City minimalism and the dub-fired end of the Berlin techno spectrum. As a result, the eight-track set became the North London trio's standout release - an album in all but name that remains the purest and most finely crafted expression of their distinctive take on techno. Now reissued on vinyl for the first time since (and in remastered form to boot), its many highlights including the pounding deep space techno of 'Serial Operations', the dub techno masterclass 'Episode 7', the Regis-esque hedonism of 'Paranormal Channels' and the restless, delay-laden riffs of 'Advirus'.

He's got an arsenal of classics but also knows how to kick out brilliant new jams. Syncrophone is where he lands now with his 'Boom Boom' EP which is a great embodiment of what he does best. The title cut is cantering than drums and hammering hits infused with some unsettling synth stabs. 'Zen' brings a little funk to the drum programming and 'Delirium' zones you out with some more heady pads before 'Knock' nails you to the floor once more with wonky acid and some freaky breakdowns.

On Side-1, 'Dome Addiction' stands out as a peak-time techno anthem, characterised by its addictive, bouncing bassline and atmospheric melodies that seamlessly bridge the dancefloor and introspective listening. The track's retro 90s vibe enhances its infectious energy, making it a sure-fire crowd-pleaser. Following this, 'Titanium Reality' dives into progressive house territory, layered with dark, sci-fi elements that create a mysterious and captivating atmosphere. Flipping to Side-2, 'Forcefield One' captivates with its otherworldly soundscapes, blending tribal rhythms with melodic undertones for a unique listening experience. The cool beat invites movement while maintaining an ethereal quality. Finally, 'Chop Chop' closes the EP with an unsettling, alien vibe that feels both disturbing and intriguing, challenging listeners to embrace the unexpected. Overall, 'The Dome EP' is a dynamic collection that showcases Dojo Zone's talent for creating immersive techno experiences, perfect for dark moments on the dancefloor.

The first track is a nod to Maurizio's iconic M5, expertly capturing its deep, rolling basslines and hypnotic atmosphere while adding a unique twist. The production is immaculate, with a driving yet subdued energy that immerses the listener in its echoing soundscape. On the flip side, 'Track 2' takes a more minimalist approach, stripping away layers to create a deeper, more haunting dub experience. Hey Brother
Review: The mighty Rawax has now put out more than 100 releases and they are all as timeless and useful as the next. Sublee steps up for this new slab of sound and kris off with 'v' which take sup the whole of the A-side but enervating outstays its welcome. It is a progressive house cut with a driving low end, plenty of grit in the percussion and pads that circle round to bring scale and a sense of cosmic adventure. 'Simple Two' slips into a deeper, more silky tech house vibe with lovely melodic patterns raining down from above. 'Hey Brother' shuts down with some dark breakbeats and mind melting synth leads that are pure peak time, post-rush fodder.
