Review: Hip hop super group Run The Jewels aka Brooklyn-based rapper-producer El-P and Atlanta-based rapper Killer Mike continue to turn out new albums that continue to get a great reception. But at the same time, their old albums are still much sought after and so are being reissued. Run The Jewels 2 first came back in 2014 and received widespread acclaim from critics. They appreciated its darker, more layered production and Killer Mike and El-P's lyricism and chemistry and its guest contributions from the likes of Zach de la Rocha, Travis Barker and Diane Coffee.

World Famous (feat 45Trio)
Re Create #01
Review: Sometimes a record drops and you just know it's going to be hot. This is one of those records, an essential 7" from Bloom and Japanese talent DJ Koco aka Shimokita, who has been spinning 45s since 2011 and can juggle beats like Messi can juggle a ball. He is a favourite with the likes of Gilles Peterson and is likely to win many new fans with this one. 'World Famous (feat 45Trio)' is a gloriously jazzy, soulful sound with funk drum breaks and warm, organic percussive tumbling next to natty chords and a killer bassline. Add in the equally irresistible 'Re Create #01' on the flip and you have a sure-fire future classic, so do not sleep.

Let's Straighten It Out (cut Creator$ edit)
Review: Octave Lab, based in Japan, have embarked on a fresh series of 7"s, onto which the A-side comes pressed with a classic American funk and soul original, whilst the B, handled by a hip-hop hand in the classic stylee, Cut Creator$, flips things to harder and hipper effect. This time we meet again with O.V. Wright's 'Let's Straighten This Out', an omnipotent-sounding instrumental soul track cut from the superb record The Bottom Line. The track adjudicates and resolves, between romantic plaintiff and defendant, an egregious inter-relational tort, by way of ultra-slick, leaden strings and anodyne pianos: "sit yourself down, girl, and talk to me... tell me, whassa on your mind?"

Tony Lavrutz & Scruscru - "Pela Internet"
DJ Pecan - "Marengo In Love"
Review: Scruniversal hit gold once more with this one from the label head Scruscru as well as Tony Lavurtz and DJ Pecan. This series is all about re-edits and reworks of old and rare records from Scru's friends' collections and first off is 'Pela Internet', a brilliantly sunny and percussive Brazilian number with great instrumentals and steamy Portuguese vocals. DJ Pecan steps up on the B-side with 'Marengo In Love' which is a more romantic sound for when the sun has gone down and you want to get up close and personal and gaze up at the stars while a sultry slow-motion funk groove unfolds.

Groovin' (cut Creator$ edit)
Review: Willie Mitchell's 'Groovin'' has largely gone down in time as a hip-hop sample source par excellence, but that doesn't detract from its inherent original swagger. Now re-released via Octave Lab, we're once again reminded of the American bandleader's easy wrist-flicking grooves and organ pumps, with the star tune here representing a simple framing of funk and soul at its most essential, without fluff or pomp. Also on the B comes a version from Cut Creator$, whose reputation for mixing hip-hop sampling sources precedes them.

More than three decades after first release it remains an influential work that blends UK club jazz with US hip-hop. Review: Our resident edits master DJ Bacon brings home more than enough on Super Disco Raps, his sixth vinyl LP to be put out via his eponymous record label. Flexing his chops over the course of eight new porcine pressurisers - plus eight previously released crispy cuts and one bonus rasher - we hear over sixteen smackout, curly-tailed mud-rootlers come plated-up badboys here, packing edits of the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Beastie Boys, Digital Underground, Wu Tang, Ultramagnetic MC's and Missy Elliott among prize swine (this is the only context in which we'd ever call such artists swine). Swiftly made and yet laid to record with an effortless hogherd's touch, we're more than happy to excuse your mouth-watering about this one, where you'd usually need to keep your cool. Bypass button, certainly not - bypass surgery, perhaps!

'Saffron' (MF instrumental) is a silky late-night sound with warm melancholic chords and subtle boom-bap beats. Billie's Milkshake
Review: Kendrick Lamar's 'King Kunta' and Kelis' 'Milkshake' hear an unlikely pairing on the perfunctorily named Edits series. The former track - some might agree its dust is still settling, as it was released in 2015 - sounds almost twice as lively here, its "oh, yes, you can, oh, yes you can!" ad-lib sounding about as squeezed as a hand-wrung lime steeped in its own juices and then dried out in Saharan heat. There's a diatonic, electric piano hook added on top too; Kelis' flip has a similar feel, mashing up the noughts teaser hit with a dash of easily identified r&b goodness - we're 99% sure you'll recognise the instrumental, its having also originated somewhere in the familiar fires of pop musical preeminence.

Review: New York's P-Sol steps up to the PS7 label in soulful form. 'Brooklyn Interlude' opens up with some brilliantly buttery vocal harmonies over a lazy and seductive deep funk and soul groove. The drums have hints of hip-hop and neo-soul and are sure to warm through any Autumnal dancefloor in style. Flip it over and you will find the distinctly festive-sounding 'Sad Party' which has some warming drum breaks and lush feels, swirling wordless vocals and glowing melodies that all give off a rather Christmassy feel. A great outing from P-Sol, then.

This time we've two further funk and soul come bombastic hip-hop edits to contend with: first up is a version of Baby Huey's 'Hard Times', a tromboning 1971 strut by the American singer whose sole LP for Curtom Records was instrumental in the development of hip-hop; Shuggy lends the a harder, steeple-high, needlepoint edit-edge. This is further teased out on the B-side, whose 'Harder Times' hears a phat breakbeat and brass bass parp further teased out to frighteningly formidable effect.

The Queens-based duo of Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po reached their peak with their 1994 sophomore album Stress: The Extinction Agenda, now being reissued for its 30th anniversary. Supported by moody, bass-heavy, and jazz-infused production, Stress highlighted Pharoahe and Po's intricate, ever-evolving rhyme styles and undeniable chemistry. Review: Adding to the immense new influx of Nujabes reissues comes this 6x7" box-set from Starbase Japan, which covers the entirety of the lo-fi hip-hop pioneer's original soundtrack contributions to the storied Samurai Champloo soundtrack. A classic anime series based on the bloody travails of samurai, and set in Edo-period Japan, Samurai Champloo is perhaps best known by its soundtrack, which consists almost entirely, and at first seemingly incongruously, of instrumental hip-hop - while the temporal disjunct of diegetic content and music might've seemed rum to some, true heads get the intuitive vibe; the combo was a compelling one, the real deal, and it was unsurprisingly crafted by Nujabes alone. This box-set consists entirely of 7"s, and includes the same songs and background music heard in the original series, as well as a special run of merch, in celebration of the series' 20th anniversary.

So, enjoy their version of Patrice Rushen's 'Remind Me' that pares back the original, sweetening further this already sweet composition by marrying Fender Rhodes with vocoder, or relish Irvine Weldon's 'I Love You', as the sensitive keyboard again takes centre stage. Get lost in Loose Ends' 'A Little Spice' which is fairly true to the original but more synthesised with a jazzy hip hop break and the jerky more downbeat version of Gary Davis' 2006 track 'Gee Dee' reflecting the trio's love of paying homage but creating a different and slower groove. On Bloom Music, a label under the Japanese Flower Records 'Soul Review' soulfully reviews Trio 45s work to date, a must for fans disappointed not to have got in quick enough when tracks were first available on 7" and also for those newly initiated. You're all in for a treat.

Review: Hot & Sassy's Christmas Strutt, originally released in 1980 and now reissued on 7", brings a festive funk groove perfect for the holiday season. On Side-1, 'Christmas Strutt', delivers infectious funk with a George Clinton/Parliament-Funkadelic vibe, blending classic funk rhythms with an early hip-hop flair. Many assume Run DMC pioneered the Christmas hip-hop track, but this jam predates them, offering an addictive, funky holiday groove that's hard to resist. Originals are rare, making this reissue a treasure for collectors and funk enthusiasts alike. On the flip side, 'Let's Funk It Up' serves as an instrumental version of Side-1, keeping the tight funk energy alive without vocals. His 'Back To Dilla' features the buttery tones of UK soul sensation Omar and pays tribute to the great beat maker that was the late J Dilla. Playability is the implied reason: on the A we've a glossed-out disco scratch-tool remix of Wu Tang Clan's 'Gravel Pit', on which ghostly rap acapellas are laid to a lackadaisical funk beat, and on the B there's a similar version of Ultramagnetic MC's's 'Moe Luv's Theme', which loops and skips about an unmistakable four-beat, wax-scrubbing hook.

Review: First released in 2004, Mf Doom's 'Mm..Food' is a critically acclaimed hip-hop classic that stands out for its imaginative production and clever lyricism. The album weaves food-themed metaphors into sharp social commentary, creating a unique narrative full of humor and depth. Tracks like 'Beef Rapp' explore the glorification of conflict, while 'Hoe Cakes' and 'One Beer' touch on themes of indulgence and escapism. Celebrating the 20th anniversary, this reissue is available on 2xLP galaxy vinyl, with all-new artwork by Sam Rodriguez, making it a must-have for collectors and fans of Doom's singular creative vision.

Review: cLOUDDEAD's debut album, a compilation of six 10" EPs released between 2000 and 2001, remains a quintessential example of abstract hip-hop. This expansive 3xLP, characterised by its dense, enigmatic soundscapes and avant-garde lyrics, has profoundly influenced a range of sub-genres such as cloud rap, hauntology, and lo-fi hip-hop. The trioiWhy?, Doseone, and Odd Nosdamiemerged from Cincinnati's vibrant underground scene, marked by events like Scribble Jam, and later moved to the Bay Area, where they helped establish the Anticon collective. Despite their shift to the West Coast, their Midwestern origins continued to shape their sound, rooted in the eclectic and experimental spirit of their early days. As noted in Chris Martin's liner notes, cLOUDDEAD's music was a unique blend of idiosyncratic vision and audacious experimentation. Each EP in this collection offers a distinct auditory experience. Tracks like 'Apt. A' and 'And All You Can Do Is Laugh' are emblematic of their surreal style, combining nonsensical lyrics and unconventional production. Nosdam's production seamlessly transitions from ambient textures reminiscent of Flying Saucer Attack to gritty drum breaks and esoteric samples. Restored by Nosdam and accompanied by a poster, this edition of cLOUDDEAD's pioneering sound, is the ideal version to get.

Review: Legendary producer and rapper Diamond D makes a triumphant return with The Diam Piece 3: Initium, the first chapter of his highly anticipated final installment in the Diam Piece series. Diamond D, known for his groundbreaking work in the hip-hop realm, has crafted a compelling project that underscores his unmatched production prowess and keen ear for collaborations. In this era of fleeting musical moments, Diamond D's decision to split The Diam Piece 3 into three EPs is a refreshing approach. By releasing Initium first, with subsequent parts Duo and Tria planned for later, he ensures that each EP receives the attention it deserves, allowing listeners to fully appreciate the depth and nuance of his work. Initium features a stellar lineup of guest emcees, including KRS-One, Inspectah Deck and Skyzoo, delivering powerful performances over Diamond's signature hard-hitting beats. The EP's lead single, 'The Kings,' highlights Diamond's chemistry with KRS-One, offering a gritty backdrop that perfectly complements KRS's commanding delivery. This is an exceptional project that showcases Diamond D's artistry and dedication to hip-hop.

Review: Neo soul singer and producer Lynda Dawn follows up her 2019 debut At First Light with the sophomoric sopor 11th Hour. Prompted by the trauma of the global pandemic, which stunted the momentum garnered by her first LP, 11th Hour was made after Dawn found a defiant space of resilience and took up a music production course. Thus flaunting a newly strung skill, the record is a consumptive blend of emotions, with moods of both criticality and soothing. The subtlety of Dawn's ear in the company of producers Jackum and Blake Rhein is astounding, the likes of 'Love Is Callin'' and 'Do You Dream' exemplarily working down a slow-jammed, psych-soul sensitivity; Dawn's vocals also play out like gauzy mists, seemingly ungraspable and palpable at the same time.

Review: Jenova 7's Lost Sci-Fi Movie Themes is an excellent blend of trip hop nostalgia and futuristic soundscapes. Across 16 tracks, he takes listeners on a journey through time and space, evoking the essence of '90s trip hop while exploring uncharted sonic territories. Standout tracks like 'The Future 1995,' 'My Zero G Love,' and 'Downtown Lost In The City Of Lizards' show Jenova 7's creativity of genre-blending and atmospheric storytelling. Jenova 7's ability to fuse moody, jazz-inflected samples with grooves that draw the listener in makes this album a cinematic journey through sound. Lost Sci-Fi Movie Themes is a unique album for fans of trip hop in particular and those simply looking for a transformative musical experience.

Review: The Raw Factor by Omniscence is a long-awaited gem from the mid-90s era of hip-hop, finally seeing the light of day after 28 years. Originally scheduled for release in 1996 but delayed due to record label politics, this album is a testament to Omniscence's skill as an MC and Fanatic's prowess as a producer. The album features punchline-driven lyrics from Omniscence, delivered in his unmistakable cadence, and backed by head-nodding production from Fanatic. Tracks like 'Amazin' and 'Touch Y'all' showcase Omniscence's lyrical strength, while Fanatic's beats provide the perfect backdrop, blending jazz elements with boom-bap drums. The Raw Factor is an album to check out for fans of 90s hip-hop, giving off a glimpse into a time when lyricism and production were at their peak.

Review: Montezuma's Revenge is the fifth studio album by Souls Of Mischief, the Oakland, CA hip-hop quartet and splinter group of the mighty Hieroglyphics Crew. Now the first-ever vinyl reissue of this 18-track font of Aztec hip-hop ambrosia is upon us. Notably, the album's striking cover featured a fifth member of the group: the legendarily innovative producer Prince Paul, who executive produced the LP, handling most of the beats and overseeing the musical direction of the album from start to finish. Paul accompanies MCs A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai as they take turns over multisyllabic flows, witty similes and smooth lyrics, deploying a dry, arid and untreated boom-bap sound; these punishing phonics do timeless justice to a certain mid-90s Cali rap sound, embalming its beats in a rigid, desiccating wrap.

Review: Kanye West's new collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign, VULTURES 1, feels unexpectedly cohesive and fully realizedia surprising change of pace for West's recent output. Known for raw and often incomplete releases, this time he brings clear production and a crisp, polished mix. Ty's smooth delivery contrasts with Kanye's own verses, blending effortlessly on tracks like the Donna Summer-sampling 'Good (Don't Die)'. Rhythmic, industrial beats provide a dynamic backdrop, especially on tracks like 'Paid' and 'Carnival,' giving this album a depth that stands out in West's complex, ever-evolving catalogue.

Cat: VMP 2310. Rel: 22 Nov 24
Review: The 1991 release of The Low End Theory marked a seismic shift in hip-hop, as A Tribe Called Quest blended jazz with raw boom-bap beats, crafting a sound all their own. From the initial throb of 'Excursions', Q-Tip's reflective lyrics set the tone, while Phife Dawg shines with punchy, streetwise rhymes that play perfectly off Q-Tip's smooth delivery, evident in their chemistry on 'Check the Rhime'. With understated but rich production, Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad give the album a unique warmth, driven by live bass lines like those of jazz great Ron Carter on 'Verses from the Abstract'. The record tackles issues from industry politics on 'Show Business' to social consciousness on 'The Infamous Date Rape'. The timeless posse cut 'Scenario', with a fiery verse from Busta Rhymes, remains as iconic as ever. Reissued now on red and green vinyl, The Low End Theory continues to impress, offering a cohesive, groundbreaking vision that feels as relevant and sharp today. It's a hip-hop classic that remains both a trailblazer and a testament to the genre's depth and artistic potential, standing as one of the greatest albums of all time.

I Recovered From This
Review: JPEGMAFIA's fifth album, I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU, is a chaotic, confrontational listen. It's noisy, brash, and often jarring, a sonic journey through the Baltimore rapper's abrasive personality. His music is equal parts sonic experiment and artistic statement, blending noise, hip-hop and punk, refusing to be confined by genre. The album's title itself is a defiant declaration. JPEGMAFIA commits fully to his own vision, unafraid to be loud, abrasive, and uncompromising. He pushes boundaries and challenges listeners with a relentless barrage of glitchy beats, jarring samples, and breakneck flows. Brazilian funk, 90s r&b and industrial sounds collide in a seemingly random fusion that occasionally grates. 'New Black History', for example, is an uneasy marriage of a Future sample and a persistent whirring. Yet, moments of sonic brilliance emerge. 'It's dark and hell is hot', a 170 bpm Brazilian funk production assisted by DJ RaMeMes, showcases JPEGMAFIA at his most electrifying. His lyrical content matches the volatility of his music. A sharp, confrontational rapper, he targets everything from fake rappers to cultural appropriation.

Review: Selling out within five minutes on her online store, RAVE:N, The Remixes'is an endgame-level convergence of some of the greatest DJs and producers on the scene right now, united with the daunting task of remixing American r&b icon Kelela's 2023 sophomore album Raven. Releasing to universal high acclaim, 'Raven' was a triumph and one of the most diverse and unique projects of that year - to be expected off the back of her similarly groundbreaking 2017 debut 'Take Me Apart'. Both projects ended up on several year-end lists, with 'Raven' being named number 1 by Resident Advisor. RAVE:N, The Remixes is a whole other beast, a 20-track 80-minute compilation of excellence featuring a star-studded lineup ranging from Yaeji and Shygirl to Liv.e and of course BAMBII and LSDXOXO (both heavily involved in making the source material.) The end result has something for everybody, an extremely experimental and varied interpretation of songs that don't overstep the predecessors. 'Fooley (LEECH Ambient Queen Remix)' is dark, heavy and intense, with harsh vocals chanting over Kelela's softly spoken hook, while 'Holier (JD. REID Remix ft. Shygirl)' transforms the quiet 'Holier' into a drill song, the 808s somehow enhancing the trilling ambient synths, complete with an all-timer from Mercury Prize breakout star Shygirl.

His 'Applications' EP is bulky and brilliant from the off: 'EMCZ' is all skittish hits and dusty drums barrelling along with speed and energy. 'TLSQ' is doused in dub chord work and has a warming glow as the weight basslines roll on and the drums hit hard. Last but not least is 'UFO2' which is more menacing, with darker atmospheres and prying synth lines paired with physical and forceful kick patterns.

This installment, the fourth in Katch's series, reimagines Grandmaster Flash's iconic 'The Message,' splitting the track into two sidesiScene A and Scene B. Side-1 features an extended funky loop, evoking the feel of a hero driving into the sunset during the credits, while still retaining a vibrant dance floor groove. Side-2 offers a stripped-down, choppier version, perfect for DJs to mix or scratch. Katch's rework celebrates 50 years of hip-hop with his signature style, blending streetwise funk and jazz with distinctive samples and iconic verses. 'Don't Let Me Down' is their latest single for the label, and is rather like nothing we've ever heard before, overlaying a raspily swung vocal rap flow from MC KZ against a superbly improvised arrangement mixing snappy drums, classical guitar, double bass and alto sax. Review: A$AP Rocky makes a major return with his new album Don't Be Dumb, marking his first full-length project since 2018's Testing. The Harlem rapper recently previewed three unreleased tracks, adding to the excitement without leaking any full audio online. Don't Be Dumb is expected to showcase Rocky's signature blend of innovative production and sharp lyricism. The album's title hints at a bold, unapologetic approach, and the snippets played suggest a continuation of Rocky's boundary-pushing style. Fans are eager to see how this project will compare to his previous works, especially with the intrigue surrounding tracks like the controversial 'Taylor Swift,' which stirred up conversation with its pointed lyrics. As Rocky's first album in six years, Don't Be Dumb is poised to be one of the most talked-about releases for the latter half of 2024, with fans and critics alike eagerly awaiting its drop.

Review: Innersoul's The Theory, originally released in 1996, has long been revered in the underground hip-hop community, and now it's getting a well-deserved reissue on limited edition vinyl with a Japanese obi-strip. The standout track, 'It's The Right Time', which was also released as a 12" single, captures the essence of the era, with its jazz and soul samples evoking the unmistakable East Coast underground vibe of the 90s. The album is full of lighthearted rap exchanges and soulful beats that are quintessential of the time. This reissue also includes bonus tracks, making it an essential pickup for both longtime fans and newcomers to this classic slice of hip-hop history.

Review: Larry June's Doing It For Me is an example of his unique approach to rap, one that prioritises authenticity and a laid-back vibe over flashy wordplay. While some critics might argue that June lacks lyrical depth, this album proves otherwise. Substance in rap comes in various forms, and June's brand is rooted in realness and confidence. From the moment Uncle Herm sets the tone with wisdom on the intro, it's clear that June isn't concerned with impressing anyoneihe's focused on living life on his terms. Tracks like 'Magnum P.I.' showcase June's easygoing delivery, where he drops lines underscoring his unbothered attitude. His confidence shines on 'Imported Couches,' where he casually dismisses hard times and keep his cool collected outlook on life. June's ability to express vulnerability, as heard on 'Stinson Beach,' adds depth to his persona. His natural voice, free of AutoTune, evokes a Nate Dogg-like charm as he croons about love and uncertainty. Doing It For Me is a breezy, feel-good summer album that thrives on its simplicity. Larry June doesn't need to overcomplicate thingsihe's making music for himself, and it's effortlessly compelling.

Review: Toby Gee's Lowrider 7" delivers a fresh spin on two iconic tracks, turning them into fun party-fuelling artillery. On Side-1, the Racked Mix of 'Lowrider' reimagines Cypress Hill's classic into an underground groove, infusing it with a darker, more rhythmic vibe that keeps the original's essence while bringing something entirely new to the table. On Side-2, the Cracker Mix of 'Vanilla Bop' takes Vanilla Ice's 'Ice Ice Baby' and transforms it into a lively jam band groove. The crisp scratches and expertly crafted edits to the original vocals add a layer of excitement, making it a perfect floor filling track that's sure to get attention.

Review: Among heads, this is of the most hotly championed hip-hop collab records of all time - and yet it is all too unknown. Doomstarks is the fabled collaboration of masked raconteur come rapper MF Doom and one of nine sonic samurai, Ghostface Killah (here known as Tony Starks); Swift & Changeable: The Prequel is their quick-wristed, mic-proximate debut mixtape, released in 2012. Just as some comic books series would prologue their main stories with pre-release strips, The Prologue served as the "unofficial" warm-up to accompany the pair's long-anticipated debut album of the same name. The Prequel hears some of Doom and Ghost's most popular tracks and collabs from various projects, including the original Doomstarks tune 'Vistory Laps'; the album provides a chopped but not screwed experience, playing out in the style of a gapless, scratch-heavy DJ mix.

Review: Snoop Dogg's Missionary delivers a captivating blend of nostalgia and innovation, weaving his signature West Coast vibe into contemporary narratives. The album, produced masterfully by Dr. Dre, resonates with intricate beats and smooth grooves that harken back to the essence of Doggystyle while exploring fresh themes. Standout track 'Gorgeous,' featuring the soothing vocals of Jhene Aiko, illustrates Snoop's lyrical maturity and emotional depth. Available in an exclusive indie vinyl edition, this release comes with a collectible poster, making it a notable addition for both longtime fans and new listeners alike. Prepare for a sonic experience that reaffirms Snoop's iconic status with everyone from Tom Petty to 50 Cent and Eminem and many more guesting.

Review: To commemorate the 20th anniversary of D'Angelo's iconic album Voodoo, Amerigo Gazaway had crafted a masterful tribute that reinterprets several standout tracks from the original. Utilising live instruments like electric guitar, synth bass, clavinet, organ and Rhodes, Gazaway breathes fresh life into these classic cuts while maintaining the essence of their grooves. The result is a woozy, silky update that melds elements of hip-hop, gospel, neo-soul and r&b, creating a rich tapestry of sound that honors the source material. With fourteen tracks, including both vocal and instrumental versions, this project captures the spirit of Voodoo while infusing it with new energy. A highlight of this release is the bonus track featuring Raphael Saadiq alongside D'Angelo on 'Be Here', which further emphasises the collaborative spirit of the genre. Gazaway's reimagining not only celebrates the timeless quality of Voodoo but also showcases his talent for blending classic sounds with contemporary influences, making this tribute a worthy addition to any music lover's collection.
