Review: Dan Andrei is arguably one of the finest selectors of this generation and a master minimal producer who makes electronic music of the highest order. His latest outing sees him inaugurating his own brand-new label alongside Claudiu Stefan. Rainbow Hill is a platform for their more personal ideas and starts with four more of Andrei's brilliantly deft yet dramatic tracks. 'Numan's Touch' kicks off with rolling drums and bass and a fine eco-system of cosmic pads, twinkling keys and fizzing synths that are theatrical and involving. 'What Else?' then gets darker and more intense with heady loops and wispy pads, and again the ante is upped and the darkness pervades once more on the tense and taught dub-tech roller 'This Is What I See'. Last of all, 'Bluer Than Ever' floats above the floor with airy pads and radiant chords. A perfect 5am vibe.

Here the outfit, who’ve been active since 2019, continue to do the resuscitatory work of reliving the legacies of 80s, 90s and 00s classics most adjacent to French house and beyond. First came reissues of Cybotron, Freestyle and Jive Rhythm Trax - these were shortly followed by Daft Punk, Stardust and Together in another trivium - and now we’ve volume 7, which exhume two of Parisian duo Cassius’s most samplerific romps to ever grace the international charts: ‘1999’ and ‘Feeling For You’. ‘1999’ first appeared, magically, in 1998, nailing a pre-millennial hubbub in a single slice of discoised glamour, further spiced by cutup voxes and soul-sampled percs; ‘Feeling For You’ is an oddball too minimal for chart favour by comparison, though the heads’ll think it just as infectious.

With updated artwork and remastered audio, this one's a nimble and tricksy electrifier, working in many a high-voltage drum snap and alternating-current impact, around quirky melodies and flighty beats. We kick off on the Zyklonic 'Earth Recompile', which unfurls about a central sixteenth window-washer synth - which occasionally self-destructs, desponding itself of its rhythmic integrity at points - whilst the ensuing 'Low Volume Lovers' moves more melodic; then, B-siders provide obversive contrast, with 'Lost In Our Ways' continuing the uptempo plod, and 'Waking Up' offering a spaced-out downtempo beats coda, with sci-fi motifs.

Review: Extramusical hugeness from Texas's best experimental electro outing, Science Cult. A name like 'Commuting Observables', when lent to a V/A mini-album, is abstract enough to immerse us in the implied concept; it conjures a mental image of a glaucous laboratory of sorts, in which a cadre of sonic mad scientists toil tirelessly to yield the batch of effervescent sense-smushers you hear here. Be warned, this isn't your bog-standard, one-or-two-part acid-analog jam EP; no, every track and alias here plays out like a different iteration of some carefully spliced yet still egregious biogenetic experiment; monster faunamechs bursting free from their respective vitreal nutri-vats, and embarking on respective misanthropic rampages, all leaving trails of mimetic polyalloy gunge behind them. Were we to choose one of said bio-beasts as our fighter, it'd have to be Syrte's 'I'm A T-Shirt', shortly run up by a tie between Fleck Esc' 'Unrefined Intentions' and Ben Pest's 'From AU'. But we have to say, none of this music is standard fare techno: all of it is really quite wild.

Each track here explores strong visions of classic sounding bands - 'Plama 1' is pure electro post-punk that infuses a bit of EBM and techno while 'Plama 2' has echoes of New Order's Confusion. We especially like 'Plama 3' with the slower electro funk that sounds like a mix of Severed Heads, Chris & Cosey and Throbbing Gristle and 'Plama 4' sounds like some kind of YMO outtake. Review: The first record in a new series of VA releases, 'Constellations Vol. 1', features Zeta Reticula, LUZ1E, Serge Geyzel, Aura Nox, Vertical67 and Ufaze. 'Dial That Number' opens with vanguard skirmishes of buckshot FM bass and sonic warmongery, a robo-voice superegoically charging the listener with a command to "dial that number" amid bloopy sonic ratiocinations and momentary forgoings of bass. Luz1e's 'Data Motions' recalls the scope and intensity of the recent DJ Stingray 313 release, with its titular musings on data fungibility and capture proving apt to the track's metallic snares and full-bodied gnarls. Geyzel's track moves more electric and playful, record scratches and synth piques-and-jerks galore. The B-siders move more barren and ruinous, with planetarily stacked cairns of bass layering, girding and trussing the mixes of 'Non Stop Overstimulation' (a tautology if you think about it) and 'Tear Down Those Walls'. Finally 'I Should Have Known' sounds more conclusive, its sense of finality and solubility helped along by snares and kick transients that, rather than merely contrasting them, seep into the track's overall dystopian smog.

Review: We imagine "Neonicle" - judging by the affixes of the name alone - would likely mean something like "new instance of a half-biological, half-mechanical monstrosity, capable of lamellic self-regeneration when mortally wounded". Think of Terminator, grey goo or The Thing. Whatever idea the producer behind this alias had in mind when coming up with the name, you cannot deny that this nominal vagary still conjures up a certain set of (grisly, technological) images when paired with such solemn, fatal electro sounds. Machinic desecrations and vocal litanies abound on A-siders 'Kagome' featuring Julia Marks and 'Dirty Sanchez', both of which portray a tarred, oiled and feathered sound, as of an unstoppable automaton setting about a new reformative mission. Then 'Train' and 'New Culture' go on to utterly usurp and displace the old narrative, with the hip cyber electro of the latter - modifying the laryngeal emissions of vocalist Dyroplane - extending this robotic coup d'etat to lay down a new, sinister futural law.

Review: Georgian producer Toke follows up his Batter Down debut 'Calm Before The Storm' with a second dance musical rabbit-holer on 12", 'Sacral Dance'. Toke cleverly uses his titular words to cognise the link between the sacred and the pelvic; indeed, booty-shaking is a ritual, transcendent act: the title track throws us headfirst into the cult-space, with its short electro bursts and middy FM hooks dancing jankily across a comical beat; such is the hypnotic formula that ensues on 'Light' and 'Therapy', which move more trancey and bombastic respectively. Finally, 'Jazz' ends on an ironic note, recalling not jazz but funk with its descendant lasershots and auto-licking synth bass.

Review: Snappy breakdance come electro from Kid Ginseng, 'I Go Off', the third in a series of samply 12"s retrograding the inimitable sound of the diskette floppy disc, and its timely usage throughout the 80s and 90s in cities like Detroit, LA and New York. Channelling an 8-16 bit sound - and influenced by DJs Di'jital, Arabian Prince, and the LA X-Men - the centring of these influences is undeniably the instrumental Techno Hop label; Ginseng truly does go off on one in response to their legacy, with the title track forcing us to spit out the teabag with an abrupt "ptooey", in light of its spicy choral samples and bitty acid line. The runner-ups 'Romancing The Droid' and 'Konstrukt' also offer variable takes on the Techno Hop sound, the former especially bringing a downtempo proto-industrial hip-hop jaunt to an already totalised, militarised sonic zone.

Review: Aman Umber and Krol strike out on a singular, little-trodden path with their newest, debut release for Telu. 001 not only inaugurates the label, but establishes the sounds and careers of two sure-to-be popular artists. They preface the release and launch with a verse, telling tall and fantastical tales of the "telluric vein". Telluric means earthly or terrestrial, but the music sounds ironically light-footed and astral, in command of a sprightly jigger's groove, as though we've overcome the "telluric" phase of history rather than stuck with it. 'All The Things' mixes filter-rasped vocal traces of Janet Jackson's 'If' into a telltale funk sharpshoot, while Umber's 'Meta Rave Society' aptly describes the character of today's ravegoer. The Krol collab, 'Rock It Out', moves things onto a wackier, more minimal tack, while the overall sonic mood gone for is decidedly reaffirmed on the radiophonic, sampletronic 'Business Generation' to close.

Review: Italian trio Mamosato, composed of Paolo Macri, Cristian Sarde and Emanuele Montalto, return to squeeze a fresh lemon on their third untitled volume. Painting a further four life-drawn retro-Italo portraits, we're first met with the ghostly yet driven 'Be Positive' and 'Second On Seven' on the A-side, both of which intersperse their throwback beats and onbeat Oberheim basses with passing phantasmic vocals, suggesting that there's more to this hazy recollection than first meets the ear. Then 'Silence Mood' goes full gated snare and double clap, amping up the various hauntings and boo!s to bring the EP to climax, whilst closer 'Mamos Tool' stands out as the EP's earmark, coming as a kind of robotic Italo-garage oddball, yet one which isn't to be missed.

Review: With both his experimental yehyeh and dancefloor focused ninih labels, founder Pieter Janson prefers to space out releases. This quality over quantity approach has thus far paid dividends, with the slim catalogues of both labels simply bursting with quality. Remarkably, this outing from sometime Kalahari Oyster Cult contributor RDS is only the sixth ninih EP in total. Predictably, it's superb, with the Amsterdam-based producer flitting between moody and ghostly breaks ('Bfc01'), lightly bleep-inflienced tech-house purism ('Vnecktechtheme'), heavily psychedelic late night intoxication (the alien-sounding chords, immersive pads and hallucinatory electronics of 'Tpssty'), and deep, spaced-out, hip-hop tempo electro ('Bfc04'). By jove, Janson's done it again!

Review: 2TRCKRS offers their latest V/A, 'Pain', centring on the productive efforts of one Nulek. If anything, it's not just pain that's on offer here, rather than, at the very least, a masochistic kind of enjoyment that revels in the sonically dry and empty. 'Come Out At Night' brings up a cuspate post-punk/techno exercise, with risibly knowing, deep vocals delivering a kind of evil soliloquy in the between moments, one as unintelligible as it is maniacal. 'An Empty Life' and 'Dystopian World' follow, continually amping up the darkwave and spaceout elements with cavernous pedal verbs and lolling riffs, giving rise to another conclusively toothy denouement.

Review: Dischi Nottetempo, based in Milan, welcomes a new artist to their roster, Caramel Chameleon (Francesco Pio Nitti), for a label-debut EP with which our ears may tussle and tarry for some time: 'Compact Demons'. Nitti will be known already to many, his fluid brand of braindance having already graced imprints like 030303 and Undersound's NOUN sublabel. This five-tracker continues the charge of heady braindance abstraction and hardboiled beats, proving unafraid of the contradicton of ludic depth, slaphappy apprehension, silly seriousness. In characteristic braindance fashion, 'd-_-b Future Is Blind' makes use of the briefest of ASCII art in the title, and sonically indulges lowriding bass and slickly rolling, generative woodblocks, a tributary use of breaks and digitalia to the tutelage of IDM if we've ever heard one. Shorter and snappier drivers like 'Inter27wined (Cottage mix)' provide similar degrees of mirth mixed in with ironic mendacity, the paradox of the music lying in its sense of sardonic sprightliness.

Review: The sixth opus to be released by the Positive Future label is upon us. Here French producer Gab Jr invites us to penetrate a deep forest, and to listen eagerly to a collective fungal song. A rather large eight-track EP, 'The Mushroom's Ride' themes itself after mushrooms and their enduring influence on the human psyche, musical or not. In fact, it would seem that the entire Positive Future label is themed after fly agaric, wavy caps and/or other magic mycelial options available to the hallucinogenically disposed raver; it's only convenient that such fast-growth electro-house mycotoxins as 'KCFF', 'Positive' and 'Your Movement' should end up so infectious at the dead root, bringing foraged elemental choices such as electric guitars and wow-ing synth hits to the substrate floor.

Whether this is factually correct or merely a cultural amusement is irrelevant; its very uncertainty is what lends its use a definite gravitas. It's also the kind of statement that helps desirously package wicked dystopian electro EPs, such as 'Inner Revolution' here. Review: Kenny Hooper is a Detroit mainstay and formerly a part of Scan7 who now makes his solo debut on Acquit Records. It continues a purple patch of late that includes his remix work on Nate Nubia's 'Dracula and Frankenstein' and his trilogy on Elypsia Records. The title cut 'Neon Skies' opens with lush synths arp shimmering over crispy, punchy electro drum programming. 'Imagination' has a dubbed-out low end and kinetic kicks with smeared synth lines and intimate vocals bringing some seduction to the sounds. 'Binary Dreams' gets more raw and ragged with a reverberating bassline full of texture and more eerie synth designs up top that keep you on edge. 'How Far' brings a cultured EP to a close with more classy rhythms.

Review: Electro don Robert Heise turns his attention back to The Exaltics project for a new EP on his steady label home Repetitive Rhythm Research. Forgetting the proverbial "house" that birthed the song, Heise borrows the canonic title and lends it a certain force majeure, in the vein of bristly "helicopter blade" synths and classic techno drum machine furrow. Best on this fearsome crock is 'Parallel Reality', whose impressively miscible cuckoo-clock offbeats and sneak-up, reverse-worked, burring lead line have yet to meet their match this year. ORX's opening edit is the most expulsive, firing off a grunting artillery of monstrously low synths and brusque cymbal crashes in enfilade.
