Ce N'est Pas Bon (JD Twitch edit) (1-sided hand-stamped 10'' repress)
Cat: AABONUS 10. Rel: 15 Jun 18
  1. Ce N'est Pas Bon (JD Twitch edit) (5:20)
Review: Long term advocates of JD Twitch's selecting skills will be very happy to see the appearance of this 10" featuring the Optimo man's edit of Amadou & Mariam. Originally made back in 2008, this edit has been a staple of JD Twitch sets and was intended to be released as part of the third volume of the superb charity focused Autonomous Africa series that was issued earlier this year. Licensing issues put the kibosh on those plans, but with the edit having belatedly been granted permission Twitch elected to issue it as one off 10" instead of waiting for volume 4 in 2015. As with the best edits, Twitch's amendments to the original version of "Ce N'est Pas Bon" are subtle and understated, adding little rhythmic elements that make it easier to slip into a DJ set and hypnotise minds. All proceeds will once again go to the Mtandika mission in Tanzania.

  1. Chords & Theories (8:23)
  2. Stay Another Day (7:02)
  3. Naked Truth (6:19)
Review: French producer Anaxander follows up great releases by legends Reggie Dokes and Kai Alce on new imprint People Of Earth. He's had a steady output in the last few years releasing on the likes of Local Talk, Dame Music and Tasteful Nudes to name but a few. "Chords & Theories" is delightfully dusty deep house with a swing fuelled rhythm, emotive chords and epic piano stabs. On the flip "Stay Another Day" is the kind of classic early 90's Chicago deep house that's so sincere you could have sworn it was a lost tape from the Prescription or Alleviated catalogue from way back when. Finally "Naked Truth" gets a bit more uptempo on this soulful deep techno jam with rich synth tapestries and syncopated rhythms. Tip!

  3. Michael Zucker - "Lost Without You"
  4. Anaxander - "Heart 2 Heart"
Review: Finale Sessions welcomes Anaxander to join label main man Michael Zucker for another one of those impeccable trips through top shelf deep house. Anaxander gets busy with "Stabs Of Love", a truly ear nagging piece that cuts through the glut of soundalike productions to say something truly special. Meanwhile his "Heart 2 Heart" resides on the B2, presenting a lighter, more playful cut peppered with pattering bongos and sprightly keys. Zucker gets into a slightly off kilter funk on "Greater Is He" before dropping into a perfect bump on "Lost Without You", putting some swing into dub house and making it sound natural.

  4. Clearfix (6:56)
Review: Silver Network has been a constant source of quality deep house with feeling since Jef K and Tony Silver fired it up in Paris in the late 90s. Andrade is just the cat to get in on the action, having been spotted on other esteemed French labels like Karat in the past. "Float Left" is a psychotropic jam pinging all kinds of strange FX, piano flourishes and subby bass around the jacking beat, and it's offset by the lounge-minded but no less inventive tones of "Float Right". Sakro comes on board for a remix of "Float Left' that taps up chunky, funky 90s house, and then "Clearfix" finishes the record off with a heads down dancefloor workout for the later hours of the session.

Review: Tropical house jams by new kid Androo! Second Circles' first release of the summer features an EP of tracks by this young producer from Switzerland. Having released on the Sparring Partner label (which he co-runs with Bony Fly), Androo has another release imminent on his second imprint Poly Dance. Coming from the sound system scene in Geneva, Androo began to produce 80/90s infused digital dub as a teenager. His interest in jazz, new wave, dub and house gently collide in his studio: a place he sees as a laboratory of experimentation where everything is mixed, dubbed and recorded live at the console. With this first EP release on Second Circle, Androo's music reveals a desire to avoid categorisation whilst displaying a clear love for percussive rhythms and emotive melodies.

Review: For the first time VIBRAPHONE RECORDS is releasing a record by an artist other than THE TRUE UNDERGROUND SOUND OF ROME. For such an exclusive event there could have not been a better choice than Italian DJ/PRODUCER, Nick Anthony SIMONCINO. For the production of this record, ISOLE DEL TRAMONTO (Sunset Islands) Simoncino uses a selection of strictly old school analog synthesizers, and drum machines, which takes you on a charming magical journey through the Mediterranean Sea with pulsating minimal deep bass lines, oneiric harmonic textures, exotic tom tom patterns, hypnotic sexy and catchy grove beats. ISOLE DEL TRAMONTO is a record that connects and combines the essential elements and spirit of deep house music along with providing its visionary future...

Review: London producer Apes is back and showing off his ever evolving style, this time exploring the deep house vibe and impressively so, just like his last release on Skint in 2015. The dreamy Larry Heard influence of "Horizon" is bittersweet, melancholic and just the way we like it! "Equinox" experiments a bit more with a broken beat, ethereal atmosphere and rich synth tapestries on this talented effort while finally the title track closes things out with a bit of a stomp on this gorgeous U.S. influenced jam with a dusty edge for added character.

  4. De La Sol (5:45)
Review: You can always rely on France's P&D to supply us with the fine deep house runnings from the 90s, and this latest reissue from Alton Miller's Aphrodisiac project is full proof that they are the unchallenged kings in that domain. The Rare Source EP was first released back in 1996, at a time when the dubby end of the house spectrum was at its peak, and when the term 'deep' really stood for something on the dancefloor. As such, these 4 killer cuts are built for total domination, starting with the excellent "Earthwhispers" and its tribalesque swing, followed by the dustier, more bass-heavy bumps of "Ain't No". "Brazil", kicking off the flipside, has got that classic Chicago feel, a hypnotic flow of melodies wrapping over booming kicks and deep low frequencies, while "De La Sol" unleashes a gorgeous slew of stuttering melodies and itchy vocal samples that render this EP a milestone of the late 90s house scene. Unmissable.

  4. Mama Loves You (6:03)
Review: Having been approved by labels as respected as Underground Quality and Autoreply, Brazilian producer Apoena returns to his Allnite label with yet more of that pure and heartfelt deep house music for those who like it classic and classy. "I Know You" punches and tickles in all the right places with its dreamy keys, soulful vocal lick and rock solid drum lines, while "Tristeza Nao Tem Fim" heads into even more blissed-out territory with its rolling groove and heavy-lidded chords. "Lost" has a solid bottom end thrust that wouldn't sound out of place on a Mike Huckaby record, and "Mama Loves You" brings more of that sweet, laid back, feel good feeling to finish up this impeccable collection of house jams.

Review: Amusingly, Apparel Music is marketing mystery producer Apparel Wax as "the vinyl-faced artist who tears dancefloors apart". While we don't doubt the latter, we'd be very surprised if his chops really were made from polyvinyl. Regardless, the mysterious figure is a producer on the rise. This second EP, which comes hot on the heels of a sold-out debut last autumn, contains another quartet of high quality cuts. The son of sleeve-face begins with the breezy warmth of "Track 1", where a disco-era soul cut is transformed into a rolling deep house gem, before strolling into more traditional U.S deep house pastures via "Track 2". Flip for the teased-out disco stomp of "Track 3" and the jazzy brilliance of "Track 4", which boasts some particularly tasty electric piano solos.

  1. Track 1 (4:52)
  2. Track 2 (6:38)
  3. Track 3 (8:42)
Review: We last heard from "vinyl-faced artist" Apparel Wax back in January, when the man (or woman) of mystery unleashed a second scorching EP of high-grade deep house on Apparel Music. For EP number three, the Son of Sleeveface takes a different tack. The untitled opener, for example, is a layered, floor-friendly, jazz dance-friendly sample collage full of vintage funk drum breaks, swinging percussion solos, fluid jazz piano solos and less than subtle nods towards hip-house. While a little messy, it's undeniably enormous fun. "Track 2" sees old wax-chops beef up and slightly weird out a jaunty, horn-heavy Afro-funk cut, while the flipside excursion is a romping deep house revision of a swirling and chiming '80s soul hit.

Review: Mateis E Aqir made his debut last year via a limited-edition cassette that joined the dots between classic krautrock sounds and contemporary experimental electronics. On this debut vinyl excursion, the producer changes tack slightly, serving up a simmering, six-track affair that sashays attractively been shuffling, ultra-deep house ("Chrimbo Ra"), woozy dancefloor hypnotism ("You Have To Live"), electro-influenced ambient house ("Ever Fruit"), bubbly dreaminess ("Turaco Crystalls") and hard-to-pigeonhole electronic soundscapes ("Keinguao" and the hallucinogenic tropical brilliance of closer "Dreamy Prophet", which contains reverb-laden steel guitar motifs amongst its many attractions). As first EPs go, it's pretty darn good.

Anil Aras leads the mission with a rippling Detroitian understated number simply called "Track 1". He's flanked by Paolo Rocco and Moises. The former ups the temperature and gets us in a lather with the insistent pace of "Ill" while the latter sooths our souls and oils our joints with the slippery hypnosis session "Easy Beauty". Dark Skies & Wetlands (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FSL 001. Rel: 21 Sep 15
  1. Different Planet
  2. Substance Of Arjuna
  3. Racoons
Review: Finale Sessions is really pleased to launch new series Finale Sessions Limited with Berlin up and coming act Arcarsenal. Duo comprised of Alan Mathias and Etienne Dauta, both founders of Bass Cadet Records and its dedicated vinyl store located in the heart of the german capital, they are also active members of the large Underground Quality family. Arcarsenal have already started to establish themselves as proponent of a crossover sound, mixing many influences from jazz, house, ambient to dub and techno. They are always giving a prominence to jam, improvisation and textures work in their studio routine. This EP called « Dark Skies & Wetlands », even if slightly grittier than usual, is no stranger to the rules of the duo. The opening track « Different Planet » is an epic dark deep house cut which develops itself over a course of 8:40. Starting with a stamping ground bassline and hazy atmosphere, the track opens up with synth attacks, dub echoes and slowly brings in a blissful melody that ends up linking all the elements. « Substance Of Arjuna », the following track on the A-side, is a-contrario a short but intense ambient work. Shot in one take, this subtle cut showcases the kind experimentations that Mathias and Dauta can end up doing late at night in front of their machines. The b-side of the EP leaves all the space to « Racoons », one of the weirdest and yet most powerful work of the duo to date. Tribal techno could be a short try to define what they achieved here, but the track goes far more than this. Built on a gritty mental acidic bass and a huge drum kick, the frenchmen bring over aggressive synth work that could sound like an orchestra on rehearsal, pachydermic screams or an overdriven guitar larsen. Underlined by a complex percussion pattern recorded live in their nest and chopped up to the best effect, the track ends up in a looping transe from which the listener might not leave in a normal state.

  3. Wallace Adalphus - "Good Morning" (6:04)
Review: London label i&i Musik surfaces with their debut transmission which spreads a powerful yet roots-laden message from the combined talents of Jamaica's highly acclaimed reggae veteran Mike Brooks, Archiver, Adalphus, and Matteo Boyero. Up top, the original version of "Pusherman" sees the vocals of Brooks sit perfectly over an Archiver production, followed by a classic dub take. Here Archiver strips back the track allowing all the intricate layers to breathe with the guitars (courtesy of Matteo Boyero), flutes & driving bass and drums taking centre stage. Down below Archiver and Boyero team up with Wallace Adalphus whose vocals bring an infectious and positive charm to "Good Morning". (Hand stamped 10" on black vinyl with a free i&i Musik sticker included. Packaged in a brown paper bag.)

Review: Proper deepness yet again from Italian imprint Rebirth, with volume two of their limited series which features a new one by Greek house hero Argy. His track kicks off the A side titled "Let's Play" and features the evocative vocals of Blue Jay over his hypnotic and soulful epic - it's the same kind of dancefloor drama that's earned him releases on Ibadan, Versatile and Bedrock over the years. This is followed by the emotive and sensual remix of Modular Projects "Leaving" by German Acid Pauli, which gets a stellar groove injection of the deeper kind. Finally there's some properly soulful and sunkissed 'hands in the air' vibes on the electric remix of Lele Sacchi's "Dreaming Won't Do" by Tiger & Woods.

  4. Are You Mesmerized? (7:11)
Review: Stockholm based Ari Bald is up next for Better Listen after inaugurating Honey Butter Records last year with that great release. He keeps on with that deep disco spirit with these four funky and lo-slung jams. On the A side, we have two ergonomic edits in the form of "That Lonely Night" and "Enchantress" respectively which are looped to perfection with some somewhat familiar hooks that gradually build up to that drop! That's where the thumping kick comes charging in and it's sure geared for maximum dancefloor dynamics. On the flip, get ready for the funk explosion that is "Moonshiner" or what could be your First Choice (mind the pun!) in the form of the smooth and sexy late night groove of "Are You Mesmerized?"

In Lov EP (12")
Cat: BLOOP 21. Rel: 17 Oct 17
  1. In Lov (7:09)
  2. Arkmagedon (6:33)
  3. Perles A Rerbours (8:13)
  4. Perles A Rerbours (Kaesar & Cruz remix) (6:17)
Review: Don't, for a second, think that Portugal's Bloop imprint is some sort of newcomer to the scene. Fair enough, they might have flown below-radar over the years, but this crew's been churning out quality house and tech since the mid 00s - peeps like Mirco Violi, Kasper and Alex Niggeman having come through the label at various points in time. There is a newcomer here, however, and his name is ARK, who launches "In Lov" on us - a broken, pseudo house experiment with an organic touch. "Arkmagedon" is straighter, more stomping but nonetheless jazzy in its approach, while on the flip, "Perles A Rebours" dives into a cavernous sea of eerie tones carried forth by a dubby swing, and the Kaesar & Cruz remix strips the groove back down to a minimalistic house chugger for the floor.

  2. Track 2 (9:44)
  3. Track 3 (9:46)
  4. Track 4 (6:15)
Review: Two and a half years after the first mysterious Arktapes earth landing comes another from the unknown. Once again fully anonymous. Once again no title tracks included. Once again denting the techno landscape with its mischievous, hissing, jittering off-beat dubby playfulness. A total trip from the opening dubby ripples and funky Detroitian hi-hat twists of "Track 1" to the final shimmering echoes of the beatless wonder that is "Track 4".

The Future (12")
Cat: MC 017. Rel: 07 Feb 18
  1. The Future (4:55)
  2. The Future (Cajmere Vision - Luke Solomon Slight edit) (6:16)
Review: For their latest trip into house history, reissue specialists Mint Condition takes us back to 1996 and the TB-303 heavy world of Chicago legend Armando Gallop. "The Future" was originally included on the artist's One World One Future full-length, before going on to become his final single release before he passed away in December '96. As with many of his finest works, "The Future" is a ragged, acid-fuelled delight, with warehouse-friendly stabs and repeated vocal samples riding a sweaty, jacking groove. Turn to the flip for Luke Solomon's subtle re-edit of Cajmere's "Vision" rework, a lolloping and groovy affair that trims the acid lines in favour of denser bass, spacey chords and a superb vocal line ("I see the future", presumably sung by the remixer himself).
