  3. No Name Groove (feat Kasia) (4:25)
  4. Reduced Vision (4:23)
  5. Poison Dart (4:27)
Review: Time Is Now operates at the darker end of the garage spectrum, with menacing 2sep sounds and plenty of hefty bass sounds. Stepping up and stepping in with the latest offering is Bakey, a newly emergent artist in this genre and someone with considerable skill. 'Bring It Back' is a real bass bin botherer with rinsing jungle breaks and screw-face bass. 'Vibing Season' cuts loose on lithe bass with some hard bars from Slay then 'No Name' explores a silky soul on bumping beats. 'Reduced Vision' is a sublime glitch-step and 'Poison Dart' comes on heavy with the hyper minimalist jungle riddims.

  1. Bluetoof - "Mistakes" (4:53)
  2. Bluetoof - "Mistake" (Gradient mix) (4:41)
  3. Soundboy Cookie - "Brooklyn Swing" (5:41)
  4. Soundboy Cookie - "Mic Professional" (4:56)
Review: Southend-on-Sea party collective Gather are back with a quick follow up to their soon sold out debut offering STM back in March. It's another four track split EP with two tracks each by Soundboy Cookie and Bluetoof, who kicks off with the louche, sax flecked depths of 'Mistakes.' The Gradient mix is more doom laden with darker bass, and Soundboy Cookie then 'Brooklyn Swing' drops in some cheeky grooves and wonky chords to really pump the party. Last of all is the kinetic 'Mic Professional' with all its spin backs, stripped back beats and womp-womp bass. Delicious stuff.

Cat: MYOR 21. Rel: 26 Feb 21
  1. Get 2 Get Her (5:26)
  2. Weight Of The World (5:28)
Review: OK, so these are some of the most fun tunes we've heard this week. Just a few days after his last outing on Distant Horizons, Chavinski has been busy again mashing up garage, happy hardcore ad house. 'Get 2 Get Her' has a euphoric pitched up vocal over booming kicks and scraping hits that all make for pure dance floor elation. 'Weight Of The World' then layers up bright melodies, twisted and turbo bass stabs and another fine happy hardcore style vocal. It barrels forwards and brings prop good vibes, bruv.

  2. Long (4:39)
  3. Soft Half (6:42)
  4. Rent (4:24)
  5. Don't Give Up (1:26)
Review: Shadowy "bemdy bass" specialist Club Winston has done a good job in hiding his, her or their identity. Whoever is behind it, the project's regular releases are bouncy, weighty and pleasingly forthright, with each of their tracks in some way doffing a cap to either UK funky, garage, bassline, donk or techno (or sometimes a few of these styles at once). There's plenty of rock-solid peak-time fodder to be found on the latest Club Winston EP, from the sharp rave riffs, rumbling sub-bass and speed garage-influenced beats of 'Soft Half' and the raw, acid-flecked 4/4 insanity of 'British Kiss', to the donk-tastic heaviness of 'Long' and the immersive ambient warmth of saucer-eyed closing cut 'Don't Give Up'.

  5. Floats (3:27)
Review: The second release of CMYK's Jam Dem Sounds label features five fruity slices courtesy of Crump, full of UK flavour and influence. The A-side showcases two alternate cuts of stripped-down UKG while the flip offers a housey stepper and concludes by exploring other BPM ranges from jungle to downtempo. The pressing is strictly limited and the records will come as hand-stamped white labels packaged in a recycled paper sleeve.

Gabriel (reissue)
Gabriel (reissue) (limited white vinyl 12")
Cat: LARV 019WHITE. Rel: 18 Mar 21
  1. Gabriel (The Scroll mix) (6:59)
  2. Gabriel (Tamborine dub) (7:13)
  3. Gabriel (live Garage) (7:25)
  4. Gabriel (Words To Give By) (7:22)
Review: Is there a more positive, soulful and life-affirming dancefloor anthem out there than Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's 1996 jam "Gabriel"? As many will be aware, it has long been sought of as a classic, with soulful house, deep house, US and UK garage DJs all championing it back in the day. This white vinyl reissue boasts all of the mixes featured on the original 12". Perhaps the most famous version is the rolling, bass-heavy two-step flex of the "Live Garage" mix that opens side B, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere. The driving, jazzy-but-stomping "Words To Give By" version has been annoyingly overlooked over the years, while the "Tambourine Dub" is deliciously sweaty and driving in the best possible way.

  2. It's A Dark Day (6:28)
  3. Music Is My Life (6:53)
  4. Music Is My Life (Mani Festo remix) (6:29)
Review: Breaks N Pieces deal in only the most hardcore beats and breaks and now they ask us all to grab a big old bag of DJ Crisps. He is a man in form right now with a red hot EP on Time Is Now back in July, a contribution to Instinct's self titled label coming soon and now these four blistering cuts. There are hints of old school energy and pitched up vocals as well as some classic piano chords on the opener 'Luvin U' but it never feels pastiche. 'It's A Dark Day' brings a well known sample but repackages it in dark and drilling jungle breaks. The most fun of the lot is 'Music Is My Life' with its face melting bass and crucial diva vocal.

Salsa Apocalypso
Cat: NONPLUS 018. Rel: 19 Dec 11
  1. Salsa
  2. Ache
Review: Nonplus continue to confound all with their esoteric approach to curation with the debut record from Doubleheart, a collaborative project between Optimo's JD Twitch and bass pioneer Neil Landstrumm. In a year of strong releases from the label, it easily stands out as one of their best; "Salsa" utilises brittle mechanical congas as the rhythmic backbone for the track, but it's the massively oscillating bass and sirens that really make it, being simultaneously huge but also restrained enough to prevent it falling into typical bass tropes. "Ache" meanwhile takes things down a notch with a housier tempo and thick bass slabs which threaten to go into full on acid at times. But it's the echoing vocal fragments and rhythm guitar that fascinate most, joining the dots between the obvious influence of Jamaican dub and contemporary bass.

Wake The Neighbours
Wake The Neighbours (1-sided 12")
Cat: ELWHITE 001. Rel: 24 Aug 21
  1. Wake The Neighbours (5:46)
Review: Enduring garage pioneer and consistent innovator El B drops his latest cheeky 12" on a single side white label. As an artist who has done it all over the years from super sweet and soulful rollers to more dark, tech edged and menacing 2-step monsters, this one sits somewhere between all that. It has a crunchy drum line and races along at a fair lick, but the tender vocals from both male and female voices bring the warmth while soulful keys get draped over the top. The percussion is raw and relentless, though, so there is no way this one won't be blowing up the club at the peak time.

Stableface EP Pt 1 (Peverelist remix)
  1. Stableface (original mix)
  2. Stableface (Peverelist remix)
Review: "Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Lithuanian producer Eleven Tigers' debut album "Clouds Are Mountains" found itself pride of place on this 12" release from Soul Motive. Opening with an extended intro of cracked Burial-like atmospherics, the track soon gains a life of its own with its minimal 2-step beat and cracked vocal samples, complete with the kind of intricate melodicism of Four Tet. On the flip side Bristol's Peverelist turns in a fine reworking of the track. Taking the already sparse original and extending its panoramic reach even further, he concentrates on the micro qualities of the rhythms, opens up huge holes in the original's deft tapestry and creates a masterful reworking which brings out the dubstep within its DNA.

  2. Unexcusable (4:22)
  3. CMS We Meet Again (4:48)
  4. Thump (5:24)
  5. Long Swelling Wave (5:36)
Review: The UKG scene remains hugely buoyant this year and Breaks N Pieces has been one fo the labels making that the truth. There is plenty, and we mean plenty, of fun to be had on this slice of wax with Pepe Elle refereeing the old school while bring plenty of newness to the dance floor. 'Hype Dope' is a real monster with farting bass and rasping synths over a nice 2-step shuffle, then 'Unexcusable' drops it down into a dirty bassline and big, airy hits. 'CMS We Meet Again' is all gun fingers, rave sirens and malfunctioning drum machines while 'Thump' and 'Long Swelling Wave' keep the vibes alive on the flip.

  3. Myron
Review: Back in 1998 Groove Chronicles took on Myron's "We Can Get Down", delivering a hard-stepping breaks-y version which was dazzlingly fresh for the time, and still sounds effervescent now. DPR continue their incredible service to archival garage holy grails by digging this one out of the dust and offering up some newly aired versions to take you even deeper. This is the sweet and smoky side of the UKG scene, not least on the spacious and dubby "2step Re:re:refix" that kicks off the B-side. Mellow, moody and oh so smooth, but with bass pressure where it counts. Don't sleep on this one - it's guaranteed to fly out.

  3. Groove Elastic - "Vibe 2" (5:23)
  4. The Mpcs - "Always Around" (70% Shuffle) (5:51)
Review: You surely know the score now with Br Banaba. It is one of the most tasteful garage labels out there and each pressing sells like nobody's business. The 15th EP in their reissue series is limited to just 700 copies and each one is hand stamped with an insert. It is the back cat of Groove Elastic that's under the microscope here with three superb shufflers. 'Private Beat' is deep and lo-fi, with a US garage tint and soulful vocals. 'Ease Your Mind' breaks out a 2-step beat with vocal stabs pacing about the mix in retro fashion and 'Vibe 2' then sets off at a much quicker pace with breezy grooves and slick hits. Neon chords define the cuddly closer 'Always Around' from The MPCs.

  4. Ease Up George - "Criminal" (main Phase 1999 remix) (6:46)
Review: After the third volume back in January, the Practical Rhythm crew don't let up and come on strong with a fourth fine volume. his one opens with a super sweet roller from Herb LF that is packed with soul and cheekiness. K-Lone then packs in more kicks and driving grooves for the more energetic moments in the night and on the flip things take a more minimal and skeletal form with Ease Up George's menacing 'Criminal'. A second mix of this one layers in a naughty bassline that is deep and cavernous. All in all another handy garage EP.

Groovin' EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RNV 05. Rel: 14 Sep 20
  1. Groovin' (4:59)
  2. Not Because Of You (4:34)
  3. Teedra (6:37)
Review: Highrise continues to pile on the pressure through his breakout year in the buoyant UK garage scene, following up crucial spots on Plastik People and Shuffle 'n' Swing with more of that immaculately rendered 2-step tackle to get you shaking uncontrollably. 'Groovin' is steeped in soul and vibe, while 'Not Because Of You' gets even craftier with its organ chops and vocal slices. 'Teedra' on the B-side follows suit, displaying a razor sharp instinct for the funkiest slithers of sound to get bouncing around that deadly swing. If you need proof there's plenty of fresh garage being made these days, then cop yourself one of these before they're all snapped up.

  4. Bailey Ibbs - "Talk 2 Me" (Soul Mass Transit System remix) (4:51)
Review: The ongoing re-emergence of garage continues apace in 2020, despite the fact that none of us are actually able to knock out shapes in a club. Practical Rhythms builds on the success of its first release with another split, this time introducing High-rise on the a-side. 'Feedback' is a bumpy ride with 98-style 2-step and lush vocals that Sly then flips into something more down and dirty. Bailey Ibbs opens up the reverse with the more minimal and skeletal 'Talk To Me' with its glitchy sound and sub warmth. Soul Mass Transit System remix with a more bliss out and soulful late night house vibe, but at high speed and to great effect.
