  1. African Conga (6:12)
  2. Spotlight (6:41)
  3. Monster (6:41)
  4. Drifting Away (7:39)
Review: It's been a while since Durban heavyweights Audioboyz last laid down a Gqom sermon. And with four tracks they're making up for lost time. Clearly inspired by the more techno-fused side of their city's melting pot, each track teeters into so many styles while remaining on its own. There's a dubby almost progressive feel to "African Conga", "Spotlight" takes us deep into the townships with its aggy, steppy dynamic while "Monster" takes us even further down the Gqom rabbit hole with an array of twist bass textures and abyssal kick spaces. Finally "Drifting Away" hits with the type of bruk-busted rhythm you'd expect IG Culture or Dego to play. Rise up!

  1. EC (7:06)
  2. 1303 (6:05)
  3. Worm (6:14)
Review: The blink-and-miss Conch returns with another siren selection as Bash & T deliver three broken house cuts that delve deeper and deeper into the sub abyss with each track. "EC" ignites the smouldering sesh with piped chords and a swinging UK funky rhythm, "1303" is much more of a clipped synth, shuffle-drum Chi-town bump fest then finally we hit "Worm", a tunnelling oscillating acid stepper that entwines itself around your floor without them even realising. Get on blower.

  1. Check 4 U (3:52)
  2. Check 4 U (Metrodome UK Gee mix) (5:16)
Review: Seminal Manchester street soul from 96; Bovel's "Check 4 U" had anthem status in clubs and on pirates throughout the city at the time but suffered limited pressing and an OG copy has been known to be priced at L2000. Revitalised by Ruf Dug and Bovel herself, it now comes complete with a superb UKG update from Metrodome which maintains the feel of the era but with the pace and punch of the times. Limited to 1000 copies.

  3. Interlewd
  4. Creepin'
  5. G Groove
  6. Tales From The West
  7. Yes We Do
Review: Having sprung into action with the Sol Explorer EP on Girasole, William Caycedo is back with a new selection of jams on the ever-developing SlapFunk. As the label's remit for minimal house and techno broadens, we're treated to low slung leftfield beats on "Booty Call" before the peppier broken beat groove of "Ain't No Joke". "Creepin'" and "G Groove" head into more familiar territory for SlapFunk fans, but there's still space for the crisp, laid back funk of "Tales From The West" and the off-kilter jazzy vibes of "Yes We Do" thrown in for good measure.

Hypnagogia (12")
Cat: SMR 011. Rel: 09 Jul 12
  1. Hypnagogia
  2. Find Me (feat Victoria Klewin)
Review: With material from Hyetal, Bashmore, Headhunter, Joker and more in their discography, Soul Motive have established a reputation for seeking out the various strands of music blossoming both close by their Bristol HQ and far (Cosmin TRG has also featured on the label) Arriving at their eleventh release Soul Motive further indulge the sounds of local talent Coleco, a producer who contributed to one of the label's early, split releases and is now granted the full grip of a twelve inch. Lead track "Hypnagogia" takes it's cue from the loose percussive style of Shackleton, gradually weaving in a thumping half step groove and intoxicating layers of Eastern strings - accomplished stuff! On the flip Victoria Klewin adds her floating, slightly saturated vocal tones to the galloping mysticism of "Find Me."

Landscapes (12")
Cat: HDB 056. Rel: 06 Jan 12
  1. Landscapes (feat Simbad)
  2. It's Serious (feat Karizma)
Review: The promise of Cooly G's releases for Hyperdub et al turns into maddening anticipation as the first taste of her forthcoming album sneaks out months ahead of the game! First up it's "Landscapes", co-produced with Simbad, and utterly devastating in its use of simple elements for maximum effect. A broken beat ticks steadily away under glossy, undulating streams of pads while Cooly herself enchants with her Neneh Cherry style vocal delivery. "It's Serious" on the flipside sees Cooly linking up with certified house legend Karizma for a more chunky, beat-driven offering that will slay floors in the same way that Altered Natives' "Rass Out" did some years back.

  2. Gabriel (tamborine dub) (7:11)
  3. Gabriel (live garage) (7:25)
  4. Words To Give By (7:23)
Review: It would be fair to say that Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's "Gabriel" (originally written "Gabrielle" on early pressings) has become a timeless dance music classic - a track that both soulful house and UK garage DJs reach for in times of trouble. Should it not be in your collection already (and it should be), Large Music has decided to re-master and re-press the original 1996 12". It does, of course, contain the now ubiquitous "Live Garage" version - the groovy two-step, trumpet-laden mix that became popular with early UK garage DJs - plus a trio of lesser-known remixes. The Tambourine Dub, in particular, is something of a tough, warehouse-friendly deep house treat.

Drive (12" + insert repress) (1 per customer)
Cat: RB 07. Rel: 08 Aug 18
  1. Drive (First mix) (5:13)
  2. Drive (Ambient mix) (3:52)
  3. Drive (DJ Sports club mix) (7:03)
Review: Thanks to the recent success of founder member DJ Sports, Denmark's Regelbau collective is currently riding the crest of a wave. Here, fellow Regelbau stalwart DJ Central gets a chance to showcase his wares on the crew's in-house label. The first mix of "Drive" is a wonderfully woozy, spacey and laidback affair - despite the presence of skittish, house-tempo hardcore breakbeats - with Erica Casier's sweet vocals rising above Central's deep and hazy backing track. Casier's wonderful vocal is given even more prominence on the deliciously horizontal Ambient Mix. Flip the record over for the real standout highlight: a bubbly, punchy, breezy and bass-heavy Club Mix from DJ Sports that recasts the track as a slipped, two-step garage shuffler full of rich sub-bass and ear-pleasing organ stabs.

  2. Dilemma (vocal original) (4:12)
  3. Dilemma (Garage mix) (5:16)
  4. Dilemma (Garage radio edit) (3:26)
Review: Following appearances on the interconnected Distant Hawaii and Lobster Theremin labels, DJ Sonikku (AKA British producer Tony Dowson) drops a mysterious, hand-stamped 12". It boasts contrasting versions of the previously unheard "Dilemma", a chiming and bouncy concoction that joins the dots between thrusting proto-house, Yellow Magic Orchestra and cheery '80s synth-pop. The latter influence is clearer on the 'Original Vocal' version, which makes great use of a relatively well-known acapella. On the flip, Dowson gives the track a radical overhaul, laying the ultra-positive original melodies over a sparse but weighty, two-step influenced groove. It's not garage in the traditional sense, and some may find it a little on the sickly-sweet side. There's no denying, though, that it sounds like a scene anthem in the making.

Volume One (2000 Tribute Mix) (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RNV 01. Rel: 11 Sep 17
  1. Soundbwoy Request
  2. Towards ‘99
  3. Next Millennium (2000 Tribute mix)
Review: Dubtraxx is new on the scene, as is their label Rhythm N Vibe, but don't let that lull you into a false sense of security - this is seriously heavyweight gear. "Soundbwoy Request" is especially dangerous, working plenty of dub, reggae and jungle motifs into a rugged garage structure and sounding utterly ruff in the process. "Towards '99" is no slouch either, albeit on a slightly housier tip than the raucous A-side. The "2000 Tribute Mix" of "Next Millenium" meanwhile sneaks out a few of the eerie tones you'd expect to hear around the time that dubstep first started to emerge.

Review: 2 B Real: an exciting new venture from Finn and Local Action. A chance for Finn to delve deeper into his influence and hone his raw, loopy physical style, this launch EP is a strong statement of intent. "Late At Night" is a jacking Detroit-minded jam that wouldn't go amiss deep in a DJ Bone selection while "Lightwork" captures Fox in suave Swing Ting mode. His bars rising the dreamy chords cascade, it's a fusion that refuses to be categorised. Do yourself a favour and keep 2 B Real on the radar.

Review: Anonymous Toulouse collective Folklore elevate their third missive to wax and it's sounding all the fatter for it. Freerange system focused jams we're treated to the full spectrum; the ricochet riddim and dreamy twinkles of the eastern jungle stepper "165 Jazz", the Claussell spiritual uplift of jacking gem "Kominike", the skank happy hot shuffle UK of "21' Speakers" and the deep oceanic submersion of the title track "Jungle Strut". 1. Last Forever
  2. Heaven Sent
Review: It's been at least a hot minute since the last heavyweight release from Swamp 81 dropped (and they don't get much heavier than a double pack of body music from Boddika). The wait has totally been worth it as Funkbias sees UKG legend Zed Bias team up with Rinse FM's excellently named Funk Butcher for two drops of typically forward thinking music. "Last Forever" burst uneasily out of the rumbling groove that opens the track into masterful concoction of vocal affectations, burning synth beams, snapping tribal drums and trademark Zed Bias bass. "Heaven Sent" does indeed begin like it was sent from above with gentle piano melodies lulling you in before being engulfed by a heavily pressurised flex of 808s and more crafty vocal dicing. The interplay between the soft and harsh elements is quite brilliant. Those who like a fine example of cover art will go weak at the knees over the Will Bankhead embossed design too.

The Rhythm EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PPR 16. Rel: 19 Mar 18
  1. Who Knows (4x4 dub)
  2. More Than Enough
  3. Take You Higher
  4. L.O.V.E. Dub
Review: This is the first outing for Herb Rhythm so no-one knows for sure what the sound of the 12" is going to be before the needle drops, but as it comes out on Plastik People you might well accurately guess that on-point garage house has something to do with it. Take your pick - all the tracks on this record brim with the funked up, swinging grooves of New Jersey with keys and plastic sax to match. "Who Knows (4x4 Dub)" is only a hairs breadth from UK garage, but it maintains that US deep house connection. "More Than Enough" is an uplifting piano house jam with vocals to match the sunburst keys, and then "Take You Higher" hits a peak of peppy club tackle to bust your best moves out to. Then "L.O.V.E. Dub" cools the EP out with a smooth, smoky instrumental jam as a perfect tonic to wash down all that garage heat.

The Message EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PPC 08. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. The Message
  2. Believe In Me
  3. Oh My Boy!
Review: Plastik People are unabashed about their love of UK garage, and they're at it once again with the pumped up swanging and banging of Ray Hurley. "The Message" even sports a charmingly British MC standing up for our right to party, freestyling over a hyped-up 4 x 4 beat and classic chord stabs. "Believe In Me" is a little housier but not at the expense of the garage heat that keeps this track bumping righteously. "Oh My Boy!" is the peak time belter on the record, keeping the stabs urgent and maximising on the Jamaican lilt of the MC to bring a ruffer end result to get the whole place shouting, "Oi!"

Review: NorthSouth hit their second release with a crisp selection of minimalist dancefloor gems from two rising talents. Christian Jay has been previously spotted on Idle Hands, and he delivers another example of his knack for sleek and skippy garage reductions with "Enclave" and "Faculties", matching icy textures with punchy bass honed for maximum dancefloor impact. Bilal meanwhile takes an electro approach on "Command Station" before twitching things up masterfully on "Ejecta" while maintaining the steely finish that binds this split 12" together.

Totally Dubs (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PPC 09. Rel: 14 May 18
  1. Feel The Rhythm
  2. Come On
  3. Music
Review: Plastik People is, as ever, your most trusted source of funking, bumping garage house. This time they've unearthed a real treat in the shape of Danny J Lewis, a secret weapon of the UK garage scene who flirted with success in the mid to late 90s, reaching the heights of Locked On and XL. Reportedly the tracks on this 12" were originally released on a supremely rare double pack, and now they've been mastered and repressed for die hard heads to sink their teeth into. "Feel The Rhythm" has a dash of darkside rave drama tipped into its sauce, but it's still an utterly funky swinger with all the hallmarks of the 90s. "Come On" is a boisterous party starter, and "Music" takes things in more of a deep house direction.

  4. True (feat Angelina Lucero)
Review: After a series of self-released tracks and remixes on labels such as Fool's Gold and Guns In The Sun, Jerome LOL jumps over to Friends Of Friends with this stunning four track EP. Expressing his most expansive soundset, each one of these tracks shows a whole new side to him. "Always" sounds like Disclosure performed by a full live band with Sara Z's lyrics hitting spots very few house records ever can. "True", meanwhile, is a cosmic, navel gazing slice of black soul that wouldn't go amiss on a Trentemoller record. Elsewhere we're slapped into slo-mo shuffle submission by "Deleted" and pummelled by industrial strength rhythms on "Fool". An exceptional EP, don't buy this for the LULZ, buy it for the LOL.

Review: US Garage is alive and well thanks to the sterling work of Plastik People, although in this case they've turned their attention to the South Eastern hemisphere and the impeccable work of Australian producer Meraki Soul. The vocal chops, swinging drums and cheery melodic flourishes on Scott Diaz's dub mixes of "Damn Sure" on the A side doff their cap to Todd Edwards with pride, and you can hear the Defected regular's studio prowess coming through at every angle of the mix. The original however is the one to dig into if you want a smoother ride, with Meraki Soul conjuring up the kind of warm, soul-inflected sound that could suit such a wide range of situations.

Review: Jack Michael inaugurates new imprint Orbital London with this killer four tracker. A concept from the big smoke, providing a platform for the natural and raw talent of Michael and associates. From the speed garage/2step influenced "Opposite Visions" with its roaring Reese bassline and familiar (risque!) vocal from a classic, it also gets a great remix by Dogmatik boss Alex Arnout - who is back after releases on top labels like Infuse, Decay and One Records. On the flip, we have two attitude driven darkroom dubs in the form of "Ghetto Trooper" and "Kult" respectively, which crossover into tech house with said UK underground flavours as heard on the A side.

  1. MMM - "MMM Meets Tshetsha Boys" (7:08)
  2. Old Apparatus - "Old Apparatus Meets Shangaan Electro" (4:00)
Review: Honest Jon's present the last twelve inch instalment of their impossibly varied Shangaan Shake remix project with the perma excellent MMM and Old Apparatus at the helm. Fiedel and Wiegand's take on the Tshetsha Boys is notable for two things: firstly it continues the duo's recent fascination with rhythms of a decidedly UK Funky nature (as executed with devastating effect on their recent Dex/Rio 12") and it further strengthens the impression Honest Jon's have given the commissioned artists a blank canvas to retain or toss as many elements of the source material as they deem fit. Thus recognisable snippets of the vocals remain alongside a brilliantly twisted treatment of the tinny melodics wrapped infinitely around butt slapping drum textures. Completely different in tone and execution, the elusive Old Apparatus invoke the spirit of Scratch Perry at his most intoxicatingly brilliant with a rusted, half stepping arrangement caked in all manner of feedback which serves to demonstrate how far reaching the project has been over the course of the 12" releases.

  1. We Go

  3. Smoking Circles
Review: While volume two of Dat Pressure's Rip N Run may have already hit the streets, now they're back-pedalling to volume one - OCD garage heads rejoice. As ever label boss Noodles is on hand with more essential wares from the vaults, this time enlisting the mighty Dub Child as a partner in crime. These jams veer towards the breakstep end of the garage spectrum, all boom bap drums and stuttered grooves, not least on the massive but spacious "We Go." "Zip It Up" packs in plenty of rootsy dub tones and soul vocal licks to match the skittering drums, and "Smoking Circles" gets into an almost techy strain of broken beat honed for serious dancefloor consumption. Just hold tight for the bass drop on that last one - it's a monster.

Review: Carsten Aermes, aka Phon O, made a name for himself via the 50 Weapons label in more recent years, and it's now time for him deliver the goods for Ellen Allien's BPitch Control, one of Berlin's finest house and techno stables. "Run" is more energetic and upbeat compared to a lot of other BPitch releases, bringing through a soaring melodic groove and a high-powered techno rattle into the mix, whereas "Booklyn Shuffle" is a futuristic sort of jungle abstraction featuring a 4/4 beat down in its underbelly. The title track "Fractions" goes for a more house-centric approach, but Phon O still manages to retain his distinctiveness thanks to a jam-packed groove full of bass exploration and subtle jungle infusions.

Review: Ukranian producer SE62 has been ducking in and out of the limelight since 2009, notching up impressive releases on labels like My Love Is Underground and Home Taping Is Killing Music. Now he returns to deliver the second release on Rhythm N Vibe, and does so in style. There's a tripped-out, heady atmosphere to "Secret Garden" that would sound incredible on a Sunday session at Panoramabar, while "Together" is a much rawer proposition. "Endorphins" is a curveball of a track, all uptempo stomp and off the wall samples, and "Insomnia" finishes the EP off with another switch up. The crafty breakstep flex of the drums and sparse atmosphere make for a cool and deadly variation to the rest of the EP.

  1. Spin Spin Sugar (Armands Dark Garage mix)
  2. Walking Zero (Tuff & Jam Unda-Vybe vocal)
  3. Walking Zero (Tuff & Jam Unda-Vybe dub instrumental)
Review: Re-press ahoy! And what a re-press... This standout garage double A from 97 gets a new life and both cuts stand the test of time impressively well. If you don't know Armand's Dark Garage mix then you need a schooling. One of the most influential records Van Helden's ever made, the deep sonorous bassline still carries the same weight and impact as it did all those years ago. Tuff & Jam's Unda-Vybe take on "Walking Zero" is equally as solid. Nowhere near as big as Armand's mix, but still huge in its time, this is a lesson in quintessential four/four garage with added vocal sexiness. Not feeling the vocal? Then flip for the instrumental. Keep spinning...

  2. Body Werk (Mike Millrain VIP dub)
  3. Hand's Together
  4. Hand's Together (Smokey Bubblin' B remix)
Review: Dmitry Meshcheryakov hails from Moscow but lives in Canada, where he's been busy pumping out classically informed garage house for over five years. Now Plastik People's new sublabel Rhythm People carries his first vinyl release, and he's stepped up with some surefire party starters. "Body Werk" is a bad ass swinger with a crafty bassline and all the right stabs and samples, while "Hands Together" gets into a more rolling peak time house flow. Mike Millrain drops a heavy remix of "Body Werk" that keeps the original ingredients intact and simply builds on them with subtle flourishes. Smokey Bubblin' B gets busy with "Hands Together," crafting a classic shuffling masterclass from the component parts.
