Review: Noodles/Groove Chronicles has releases going back to the 90's and is recognised as one of UK garage music most influential producers, his recent works collaborating with follow producer Dubchild. The duo also work under the alias Nu Agenda creating their own style of hybrid house, and have support from various stations such as Rinse FM, 1xtra, SWU, NTS, Mode, Worldwide Radio and Reprezent. 'Midnight' opens up with deep, haunting chords and a lush reworked vocal laid over a smoky 2 step beat. Review: The Vivid label is yet another one from Burnski who also runs Constant Blanc and Instinct. He is s single handed garage hit making machine and he knows how to tap into the next gen, too. Here he calls upon Peaky Beats for a naughty and nasty three track affair that has retro feels but contemporary style. 'Can't Stop' opens up with a 2-step shuffle and steely hits, then 'Get Ready' gets more free and melodic with some boxing little melodic patterns and oscillating bass. Last of all is the most menacing and dark - 'Wildcat' flips into a dub wise swagger mid-way through that is going to blow up the clubs.

Review: Our second sound-clash instalment sees Panix lock heads with DJ Snowy Buffet. Based out of South London, Panix made a name for himself in the dubstep scene, before emerging as one of the most exciting producers of UKG and breaks. The A1, 'Premium Dubz' combines moody bass-lines with ravey stabs to make the ultimate 2-step dance floor killer. The A2, 'Hefty' does exactly what it says on the tin.. Review: Three slices of unashamedly old skool (two) stepping action from the Above Sound label and TwoStep2 aka DJ Relay and Jo Public, that'll transport you back to the Sunday scene and UKG's earliest days. On this EP's lead track 'Give Me Some Of That' the duo perfectly catch that intersection between rave elements - the wispy, eerie synths and pitch shifted vocals - and the sophisticated shuffle of American garage. 'Drop The Bass (2022 Remaster)' leans slightly more towards the hardcore flavour, its choppier beats more evocative of the inspired syncopations of breakstep, while 'What's Gonna Happen' is the trippiest and most optimistic sounding of the three while still packing plenty of rhythmic punch.

Review: The Craft Music label is back after a one year break with some fresh new cuts by resident Marco Lazovic. It's an EP inspired by the sound of the English club scene in the nineties and noughties, labels like Good Looking Records and artists such as Mike Millrain. Opener 'Losin Control' sure is a compelling mix of electro and breaks that soars on cosmic lines with euphoric vocals in the distance. 'Come To London' has a distinctly garage feel to it with its crisp broken beats and there is more high energy but melody-rich breakbeat action in 'Dark Gravity' while 'Space Jazzy' is s super sweet and deep jungle cruiser.

Review: Pure Garage was always one of the cornerstones of the early UKG scene. It's good to know they are still going strong, and so is garage - particularly so right now. This is probably why the label had deiced to strike while the iron is hot and drop this second volume of collectible cuts from across the years. And why would there be, because nothing gives you a pure shot of adrenaline and euphoria than a good garage tune. And here are four of them on the fledgling Enchanted Rhythms label. SPK Brings an edgy vibe with 'Morchang', B0n gets all tripped out with cyber funk cut 'Semenovich Vibe' while 'Green Is God' is a lush, stripped back and late night kicker. Review: It is now a full decade since the Disclosure boys burst not the world sated with their Settle album. Not only is the artwork iconic, but the tunes too ushered in a new era of chart-friendly sounds and showed artists they needn't be afraid of popping their heads above the so-called underground. This special new version comes with all the original tunes, many of which were big hits for the duo, as well as bonus tracks. A full decade on they all sound as good as ever with the Surrey boys' production prowess still standing out. This one got platinum certification and topped the UK charts in its first week.

Reggae, highlife, dancehall, UK bass and rave all meet in a world of fresh rhythm and melodic invention. 'Telephone No Wire' opens with a feel-good highlife sound on a 2-step beat with vocalist Adotey Johnson in fine form. 'Nyura' heads to the club with weighty bottom ends and enchanting melodies then things get darker on the flip with 'Try To Test' exploring another take on 2-step with hints of UKG and grime overlaid with catchy vocal hooks. 'Last Chance' pairs dancehall vocals with downtempo breaks for a superb conclusion.

Review: The Time Is Now label continues to lead the way in new school garage sound with a fresh platter that matters from Mass Transit System. As ever this is hefty, bass driven tackle with plenty of throwback sounds like the reversed bass and yelping vocals stabs on 'Need Someone' and it is absolutely irresistible. After that face melter is 'Hold U Tight' with its whirring bas sounds and dark grooves, the crispy 2-step naughtiness of 'Fever' and 'Tasty' with its badman lyrics, withering sci-fi synth sounds and gritty warehouse sounds all primed and ready for maximum impact.

Review: The Practical Rhythm crew are back with a third vital new release here. It's another trip back to the old school days of 90s garage but with a sufficiently stylish modern update. Sky Joose & DJ Perception are two of the scene's finest players and both come through here with a new single each. Sky Joose's 'Skin Teeth' is a dry, stripped back and minimal cut with darkened bass that becomes even more naughty with the Interplanetary Criminal SPZL remix. Perception then brings some light to the EP with his 'Oh Yes', a soulful cut with a magic lead and loose, tumbling drums. DJ Jason then flips it with some smeared, reversed bass and skeletal perc.

Review: Few other labels have been as instrumental in the garage revival as Time Is Now. Everything they do has hit a perfect sweet spot - never too nostalgic and reverential to the DOGs, and always with something fresh and future facing to enjoy. Yosh once again strikes that perfect balance on this handy four tracker. There is booming sub bass to sink into on the deep 2-stepper 'Show Me' then 'Principle' ups the pace with more percussive clatter, jungle breaks and rude boy bass stabs. 'Point Blank' pulls back again to a dark and atmospheric late night riddim and 'Take Down' is a nawty little number with sick neon chords.

Review: IRIS are also known as IRIS Soundsystem, made up of Eric H and DJ Joseph. They recorded a clutch of tunes back in 2000 and 2001 which capture the magic of the UK garage sound in a raw and ruff form, and now they've been unearthed and pressed up by the good folk at Bubblin Fresh. 'One Eye' is a skippy 2-stepper with a nu jazz undercurrent (just check that bassline), while 'Beabay' takes a more melancholic trip through minor Rhodes chords and minimal beats. 'Shastic' has a little more fun with the bass, getting properly wobbly underneath more of those atmospheric keys, and 'Myumax' locks into a spooky little shuffler which fans of El-B should absolutely take note of.

Review: Neat contemporary UKG taking after the classics. Ba Dum Tish once more welcomes producer Bob G for 15 minutes' worth of well-layered 2-step and 4x4, in the form of 'Happenings'. The buzzsaw on the front cover might echo the influence of Blow's 'Cutter' on the then contemporary sound of UKG in its original 90s heyday; meanwhile, sonically, the likes of 'Happenings' and 'Soothing' bring fruit-driven strings and sweet-attacked rims n' knocks to the table and 'Unclosed' and 'Off Switch' present further experiments in the realms of flat beats and speed garage, the former working in a restless acid line and the latter bringing in a touch of speed's essential laggard swing.

Review: UK's All My Thoughts label has built up a strong reputation the past half-decade. Fans of the label point to it alongside a few others as the perfect blend of house and techno music. Edmondson is equally as strong with a handful of releases that have also garnered high praise for. Vanarama houses four examples of deep house that bridge garage music and dance music to make them both futuristic, deep and fun. We really like the wide range of moods in this EP. All My Thoughts has another winner! Only 80 copies in total so be quick!

Review: It's been a while since we heard any convincing electro-garage or UK funky, but this new and extremely rough-round-the-edges EP from Sky Joose might just have persuaded us once more. Debuting for the anarchic UK label Renegade Season as their fourth white label slab, these bits are proving that people with an ear for the 'true' sonic spirit of garage are still out there and kicking it. Curious moods are conveyed on both light-hearted cuts like 'Runaway', not to mention the bubbly future world that is 'Ace', with its vocoders and back-alley spookiness, plus the rousingly melodic funky cut 'Shango Dub'.

Review: Young South London dance veteran Ben Hauke delivers a worthy full-length LP for Touching Bass, Club Cute, a self-described love letter to the city's club culture. Feeling outwards from his establishing, Rye Wax-adjacent EPs and 12"s - which sounded more rooted in 4x4 house, albeit with an unmistakably SE-tinged wonky bent - Hauke's latest here leans further into the broken beats and UK garages more befitting of a full-length dance record. Welcoming a star cast of vocal and production plus-ones to the party (Jadasea, Brother Portrait, Shy One, even Katy B (!)), the effortless feel of UK club culture, particularly the midnight moods endemic to quote-unquote 'SELDN' and its many nighttime haunts in centres like Peckham, Deptford, New Cross and Bermondsey, is felt lightheartedly - cutely - throughout.

Review: Marcel Vogel's Lumberjacks In Hell was first established in 2010 and since then has steadily peddled the hottest of sonic metals, either well-known or radar-evading. Centring on leftfield club music, their approach is to establish something of a home for artists, who regularly return to the label after periods of years. House artitsts Lu/Lu and Lyma prove no exception to this rule, returning to the label after two years with their newest record 'Hot Molten Lava'. Review: Bouman is looking to establish itself in the deep house world and made a fine start with its first EO, This second one is another head-turner that comes from Benx with a couple of sweet remixes. 'What You Want' (feat Colonel Red) opens up with some soul-drenched sounds and lively drum programming topped with a great original vocal. 'Beautiful' is more warm house with smoky chord work that calls to mind early Kerri Chandler. A DJ Crisps remix brings some real bass weight and garage percussion and last of all, Orlando Voorn remixes 'Let's Get Wild' into a bulky techno roller.

Review: In terms of popularity, Opus III's 'It's A Fine Day' is such an enduring song that its staying power only leaves us to wonder what the crux of its half-life is. We'd probably wager it had been packed with sonic allotropes of bismuth-209 if it weren't for a more simple explanation: its stratospheric breakbeat construction - packed with orchestral hits, scratchy drums, burbly basslines and echoic pianos - had nailed the genre form to a T, while also working in one of the most reassuring and catchy vocal hooks in rave history from vocalist Kirsty Hawkshaw. In turn a rave musical interpretation of the 1983 ballad It's A Fine Day by Mancunian poet, musician and all round eccentric legend Edward Barton, the lyrics therein capture the puce innocence of going about one's day. That a theme so quotidian should end up worked into an ultimately ecstatic, not-so-quotidian rave tune is welcomingly ironic. So too is it welcome that Opus III should still be releasing remixes and new versions of the song to this day. Here's a sick 'XXIV' version, alongside phat outta-bounds garage version from Shadow Child.

Review: Genre-defining garage label Instinct is back with another one of its lip-curling, rip-snorting and floor-destroying EPs, this time from Bullet Tooth. All the old school signifiers you need are present and correct in the opening cut 'Don't Look Back' with its naughty bass, shuffling drum loops and chopped vocals. 'Can You Hear Me Call' is a more crisp and lithe, 2-step leaning jam with a wobbly low end and late night urban menace. Last but not least is the speed-garage-inspired 'Next To U' with its pulsating bass and aching vocal hooks right up top. Brilliant tackle as ever.
